Creating Characters Based on Prescription Drug Names - A World Forge Overdose

Hello dear listeners and welcome back to another episode of World Forge!  This week we decided to just fully give up on being able to come up with names for characters ourselves and decided to build characters based on random names of prescription drugs, which all sound like made up fantasy words anyway.

This weeks rec room is to go and check out the Cuphead Show!  If you liked the game or are just looking for something short and easily digestible on netflix we definitely hope you take a look!

Home Brewed Writing Prompts Part 2 - Slugs in the Mist

Welcome back listeners to another episoede of World Forge!  This week Piper and I are continuing our discussion of the custom world building prompts we cooked up for each other.  We also may have accidentally included the first episode of our Hadestown fancast somewhere in the middle there.

This weeks rec room is once again Pipers new podcast Eyre Buds!  Each week Piper and friend of the podcast, Lillian Cotter, dissect a different adaptation of the classic novel Jane Eyre!  Some are great, some are terrifying, but all are fun!  Give them a follow HERE and wherever fine pods are cast!

We also have to recommend you go and listen to Hadestown if you haven't yet.  Not only is it one of our favorite pieces of media EVER but it also was clear inspiration for a lot of what we worked on in this episode!

Hello listeners and welcome back yet again!  We've taken a bit of an unexpected holiday hiatus but now we are back with a real humdinger of an episode.  This is part one of a 2 part series of episodes where Piper and I created prompts for each other to build upon.  This time Piper lays the foundation for a fascinating world of political intrigue and forbidden magic, next episode it's my turn!

We also have to recommend you go and check out Pipers new podcast Eyre Buds!  Each week Piper and friend of the podcast Lillian Cotter dissect a different adaptation of the classic novel Jane Eyre!  Some are great, some are terrifying, but all are fun!  Give them a follow HERE and wherever fine pods are cast!

Welcome back listeners to another episode of World Forge!  This week we're taking on TWO topics for the price of one!  First we spend some time talking about our experience creating episodic adventures and finding ways to accommodate players with inconsistent availability.  We also take on a listener topic from our dear friend Angus who asks us to explore the idea of civilizations that predate known history!  We had a lot of fun with these ones and we hope you will as well!

We also recommend you go and check out Arcane on Netflix it's...  just so good.

It's World Forge Revisited - You Don't Mess with the Mer-Mafia

Welcome back to another (rewind) episode of World Forge!  We're traveling this week and weren't able to get an episode out in time for release so we hope you enjoy this look back into another classic episode of the show.  This time we're talking about creating interesting evil lairs and bad guy hideouts.  The place you conduct your business out of says a lot about you as a supervillain, so we want to help make sure all you villains out there are fully equipped to carry out your dark deeds in style!

We talk about some of our favorite evil hideouts, and then go on to create some of our own including: a speakeasy for creatures of the night, and a magical baseball stadium/casino!

Thanks so much to @kerfliggle on twitter for honoring us with the privilege of mucking about in your world for ~an hour and a half!

And not to keep going on about it or anything but we've got episode 100 coming up holy cats!  We have a lot of exciting plans for that but mostly we want to be able to include your random prompts and questions live on air!  So if there's anything you've been dying to know about us, or anything you want us to cover, please send in your questions, comments, and prompts to us on twitter @worldforgepod, or via email at worldforgepod@gmail.com!  If you send us a short (~1 minute) clip we'll do our best to listen to it live on air and respond!  We're really excited to see all the awesome prompts you send our way, and can't wait to see what the future holds for World Forge :)

A World Forge Mother's Day Rerun - The Reign of the Iron Witch

A World Forge Mother's Day Rerun - The Reign of the Iron Witch

Hello listeners and welcome back to another World Forge rerun!  This week we were unfortunately unable to record, so we've decided to rerelease our mothers day episode from last year in the mean time.  Enjoy!

"This is an episode for all the moms out there listening!  Also everyone else...  ok so it's for everyone really but mostly it's for moms!  This week we take a look at some inspiring leading ladies from reality and fiction, and try to come up with our own fantasy matriarchs!  We cover a lot of cool examples and land on a badass coal momma that wants nothing more than to create a safe life for her daughter, and a spitfire airship captain out for revenge with a faithful squad of soldiers in tow!

We also had some really fun recommendations for you this week!  Above all we hope you gave your mom a call on mothers day, but besides that we recommend you go and listen to The Hazards of Love by the Decemberists!  It's an amazing indie rock opera about a baby rescued by a vengeful forest queen, and her struggle to hide him away from the human world.  We also want to thank @great_lawful on twitter this week for giving us a really kind shoutout.  Please go check them out if you're looking for more fun DnD content :)

A World Forge Moving Day Rerun - The Man Who is Just Snakes and Creating Stories Based on Real Places

Hey listeners!  In the midst of all the chaos in our lives right now we were unfortunately unable to get a new episode recorded this week, and honestly how could we possibly follow up on last weeks amazing guest episode?  Have we peaked?  Who's to say?!  But at the very least for this week that question will remain unanswered as we re-release another favorite past episode of ours about creating stories based on real world places we've traveled!  Thanks again for your patience, and we hope to be back again next week with another new episode!

Hello listeners and thanks for joining us again for another episode of World Forge!  We are freshly back from a much needed vacation and wanted to take some time talking about how to look out for inspiration in your daily lives (or travels!) and try to build some interesting stories and places based on some of our favorite places we've traveled to!

Our inspirations include our recent trip to Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a past trip to Washington State, the black sand beaches of Iceland, and a some other really exciting places we've been lucky enough to visit.  After that we take a moment to talk about a really wonderful charity event we're fans of: Games Done Quick!  This years Summer Games Done Quick event has just concluded, having raised over 2 million dollars for Doctor's Without Borders!  This is an event that we've been closely involved with for years that we definitely want you to check out.  Not only is it the largest fundraiser in the world for DWB, it's just a great time all around.  Check out their twitch stream at twitch.tv/gamesdonequick for their live events, or their youtube channel youtube.com/c/gamesdonequick for all of their past content.  And please consider donating to one of their several events that take place throughout the year!  As always, if you enjoyed this episode or want to share any feedback please consider reaching to us on on social media!  If you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations we want to hear them!  And if there's anything that YOU want us to help build please let us know!  We can be found on twitter @worldforgepod and via email at worldforgepod@gmail.com!  If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts or your podcasting app of choice!  Leaving us a review or sharing our show with a friend are the best ways to support this podcast completely for FREE, and really helps to get our show in front of new listeners!

Hello Listeners!  Welcome back to another episode of World Forge 2021!  Few and far between are the episodes where we actually create characters we intend to use in our DnD games but this week we are coming in hot with a character that will be deployed into a game Piper is putting together very soon!

Never before has the world seen such an effective and charming burglar of art!  We talk some of our thievious inspirations both real and imagined, as well as how to find ways to fit a thieving character into your DnD game and what kinds of shenanigans they can get up to with the rest of your party.

We also have a really great recommendation for you this week in the form of Studson Studios on youtube!  If you're interested in miniatures and terrain modeling, this is a great channel that is filled with not just helpful tips but a hearty helping of humor to boot.

Putting Unique Dragons in Dungeons - I Dream of Dragon

Putting Unique Dragons in Dungeons - I Dream of Dragon

Happy holidays listeners!  We're back again this week with another (vaguely) holiday themed episode!  It's holiday themed in that it's a gift we're giving to you, the gift of a Christmas dragon!  We had a blast with this topic last year so we've decided to make it a bit of a holiday tradition to do an episode where we create unique dragons to shove into your various dungeons!

And joining us to help in our quest this week are Mike and Joleen from
Dice Tower Theater!  Dice Tower Theater is an amazing audio drama based around a long running DnD campaign.  Not only is it a great show, but season 3 is premiering soon, and once again we are offering our voices to the cast!  Definitely go and check them out on twitter or anywhere your favorite pods are cast.

Mike and Joleen have some awesome and hilarious ideas about how to kill demons with math, turning a dragon into the ultimate fashion accessory, and what it would be like if Ben Kingsley were a dragon.

We also want to give shoutout to last years guest Josh from over at Arcane Forge!  Josh is an amazing artist who creates videos breaking down different DnD and mythological monsters over a speed painting he's done of that episodes monster!  December is all about dragons on his channel so go and check him out if you need more dragon-y goodness this holiday season!

Rogue AIs and Magical Constructs - The Rise of Robot Downey Jr.

Welcome back once again to another episode of World Forge!  This week we're creating some artificially intelligent heroes and villains based, as always, around random prompts!  We talk about what kinds of creations can come from science or magic gone too far, and how beings born of mans hubris can impact the world around them!

Then we hop into the rec room for a listener shared resource!  fantasynamegenerators.com!  Dale Ivarie thank you so much for sharing this most excellent of creative tools, as any long time listeners will know, we are terrible at coming up with names, and tools like this can be indispensable for any DM who is similarly cursed.

This week was a really fun episode, and if YOU have any other ideas for upcoming topics we definitely want to hear them!  Please consider reaching out to us on twitter @worldforgepod or via email at worldforgepod@gmail.com!  We also love to hear your feedback on our creations!  If you have any ideas on how to improve upon what we've built on air please send them our way!  If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts or your podcasting app of choice!  Leaving us a review or sharing our show with a friend are the best ways to support this podcast completely for FREE, and really helps to get our show in front of new listeners!

Creating Unique Monk Characters - Ninja Turtle Hands

Creating Unique Monk Characters - Ninja Turtle Hands

Welcome back listeners to another episode of World Forge!  This week we're tackling another user suggested topic from our dear friend Jarred over at Monsters and Multiclass!  Jarred recently shared with us that sometimes it can be difficult to create unique monk characters given their narrow definition in game, so we took it upon ourselves to try and explore some alternative approaches to the monk lifestyle!

Speaking of Monsters and Multiclass, why don't you go and check them out?!  They're a great group of friends and their show features a lot of great discussions about strange and unique combinations of DnD classes, and they've even had us on as guests!  Go give a listen to their Monk/Artificers episode where I try and explain why Santa Claus is the best example of both classes in question!

We also recommend you go and watch Any of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movies, and the Ron Howard classic Cinderella Man!  Both movies have excellent examples of characters we feel demonstrate the kind of discipline that's at the core of the monk class.

This week was a really fun episode, and if YOU have any other ideas for topics we want to hear them!

World Forge Jukebox I - There's Something Sus About This Demon

Welcome back listeners!  You've officially made it to the other side of our spooky Halloween month and into the first episode of what we hope will be a recurring series of episodes of the show: the World Forge Jukebox!  The way it works is we open our favorite Spotify playlist, press shuffle, then build a character based off of the song we get!  We've even created a playlist for YOU to listen to all the songs we discuss in the episode here!

World Forge Jukebox I Playlist

For this week's rec room we of course recommend all the lovely songs we base our characters off today, but we also wanted to share another great podcast full of inspiration and insight, A Couple of Characters!  If you're looking for more character ideas, prompts, and discussion, Alex and Quinn are full of great ideas!  Go check out their show, and give them a follow on twitter @ACoCPodcast!

This idea was sent to us by World Forge listener Angus on Twitter, and we couldn't be more pleased with how it came out!  Thanks Angus for the great idea!  If YOU have any ideas for episode topics we want to hear them!  Please consider reaching out to us on twitter @worldforgepod or via email at worldforgepod@gmail.com!  We also love to hear your feedback on our creations!  If you have any ideas on how to improve upon what we've created on air please send them our way!  If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts or your podcasting app of choice!  Leaving us a review or sharing our show with a friend are the best ways to support this podcast completely for FREE, and really helps to get our show in front of new listeners!

Building Adventures Based on Thanatophobia - Death and Taxes [Fright Forge 2020 Finale!]

Building Adventures Based on Thanatophobia - Death and Taxes [Fright Forge 2020 Finale!]

Hello dear listeners!  You've made it to the final week of Fright Forge 2020!  We're so proud of you for traversing the abyss with us and helping us to make this most spooky of seasons a little more fun.  This week we finish off our month of fun and frights by building an adventure based around the grand daddy of phobias, the fear of death itself!

We talk about our favorite personifications of death and provide some great ideas for how to build an intimidating aspect of the grave for your DnD games.  We also talk about some fun quests you could build around an interaction with such a character.  There's so much to this trope that we could have packed in 10 episodes worth of ideas, so I think this is something we may well revisit in the future.

We also take a moment to talk about a really fun sponsored supplement in the rec room!  This week we're talking about Galifax's Guide to Everything Evil!  This is an AMAZING DMsGuild supplement that focuses on how to get the most out of your evil characters.  It's packed full of evil archetypes and backgrounds to fit every class and playstyle, as well as evil themed items, monsters, and even some tips on how to maintain civility at a table full of baddies.  Honestly I think anything that helps encourage good communication between players is a good thing so for that alone we are more than happy to recommend this guide.

It just released this past friday and can be found on DMsGuild here!

If you buy please leave them a nice review and tell them we sent you!

As always, if you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations we want to hear them!  Do you have any stories about your own near death experiences?  And what kind of spooky adventures are you running this month?  If you have something to share or if ideas for future episode topics please let us know about them!

Creating an Adventure Based on Nosocomephobia: The Beneficial Benefactor [Fright Forge 2020 Part 3]

Welcome back to your favorite spoooooooky DnD podcast!  This week we're continuing our month of Halloween themed episodes by creating an adventure based on Nosocomephobia: the fear of the hospitals!  Some people hate needles, and some people can't stand the idea of being doctored up for any reason at all, this episode is for the latter.  We spend some time this week talking about spooky doctors and haunted hospitals (in the real world!) and build what we think is a really interesting multi session adventure for you to subject your players to!

We also have some extra spooky recommendations for you this week in
Ten Candles by Cavalry Games as well as Betrayal at House on the Hill and its excellent sequel Betrayal at Baldur's Gate!

As always, if you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations we want to hear them!  Do you have any stories about terrible hospital experiences?  And what kind of spooky adventures are you running this month?  If you have something to share or if there's anything that YOU want us to help build please let us know!

Creating an Adventure Based on Nyctophobia: What a Terrible Night for a Curse... [Fright Forge 2020 Part 2]

Creating an Adventure Based on Nyctophobia: What a Terrible Night for a Curse... [Fright Forge 2020 Part 2]

Welcome back and welcome to your favorite spoooooooky DnD podcast!  This week we're continuing our month of Halloween themed episodes by creating an adventure based on Nyctophobia: the fear of the dark!  Not only do we talk about some interesting shadowy evil doers, but we talk about ways to incorporate actual real life darkness into your players gaming experiences!  So dim the lights and grab a seat for Fright Forge part 2!

Our rec room recommendation this week is for the strategy board game Dead of Winter!  Dead of Winter is a semi cooperative survival strategy game that tasks you and your friends with collecting supplies to survive the winter while besieged by ravenous zombies.  There are something like 50 unique scenarios, and a variety of characters to play as all with their own interesting survival abilities.  We love it, and we think you will too!

As always, if you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations we want to hear them!  How have you overcome the prevalence of dark vision in your games?  And what kind of spooky adventures are you running this month?  If you have something to share or if there's anything that YOU want us to help build please let us know!

Creating an Adventure Based on Arachnophobia: Spiders in My Soul [Fright Forge 2020 Part 1]

Welcome back and welcome to the spookiest month of the year!  We are HUGE fans of October and Halloween here on World Forge, and so we've decided to celebrate by spending the month creating adventures based around phobias for you to use in your DnD games!  Our first venture is about arachnophobia and how to include interesting and terrifying spiders in your story.  We come up with some people, places, and things all woven into a terrifying tapestry of spider silk storytelling!  Look out over the rest of October for 3 more Dungeons and Dragons adventures based around other phobias!

We also have a very fun and spooky rec room recommendation this week in Limbo: a spooky monochromatic puzzle platformer that features a giant giant spider as one of it's primary enemies!

As always, if you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations we want to hear them!
