Episode 043 - Drum Mechanics: Enhancing Drumming Performance through Biomechanics and Ergonomics
Join me, Jon Manna, on a riveting journey into the world of drumming biomechanics and performance health, as I sit down with biomechanics specialist and fellow drummer, Brandon Green. Listen in as we tackle the challenges faced by drummers at all levels—from those who grace the church stage to the relentless tour veterans. Brandon's unique expertise and personal journey illuminate the critical role of resistance training and biomechanics in preventing injuries like the bulged disc I've grappled with. Our dialogue is a goldmine for any drummer eager to play pain-free, and it's not just for church drummers; it's for anyone with a passion for rhythm.
Discover the art of balancing sound quality with the ergonomics of drumming as we dissect the intricate relationship between a drummer's setup and their physical health. Drawing from conversations with the likes of Garrett Goodwin and Vincent Baynard, and examining Daru Jones's distinctive setup, we underscore the necessity for a personalized drum configuration. We address the biomechanical considerations that can enhance or impair a drummer's performance, providing invaluable insights for crafting a drum setup that serves both your body and your artistry. Plus, don't miss out on the importance of a stable and comfortable drum throne, as we discuss how your choice of seat can impact your posture and long-term health.
Wrap up your listening experience with an exploration of the cognitive and physical benefits of drumming, and how it can be a conduit for lifelong learning and personal growth. As we launch into the announcement of the Drum Mechanics website, an upcoming platform dedicated to the welfare of drummers, you'll want to be part of this revolutionary resource aimed at preserving the health and enhancing the performance of drummers everywhere. Stay tuned for the summer launch, and discover how you can secure an exclusive lifetime discount by joining the mailing list. This episode isn't just a conversation; it's an invitation to a healthier, more dynamic drumming career.

Episode 041 - Rhythm and Family: Striking a Balance with Jared Kneale and Javier Solis
NOTE: This interview was conducted live and in-person in July 2023.
Jon Manna had the pleasure of hanging out with Jared Kneale and Javier Solis at a custard shop in Lewiston, NY. Naturally, he asked them some questions. This is the audio version and you can watch the full video and concert vlog on YouTube.
Join us as we catch up with Jared Kneale and Javier Solis, the dynamic drummer and percussionist duo for Lauren Daigle, during their three-show run and just before the upcoming Kaleidoscope tour. They offer fascinating insights into their approach to rhythm, particularly how they explore different pockets and gaps in the rhythmic texture of the music. Both share the most challenging contexts they've faced and Jared has a hilarious story about a time he had to use a floor tom as his kick drum!
Next, Jared and Javier open up about their journey of learning the art of drumming and percussion. From their humble beginnings in cover bands to working in a drum store, and even a look into the Nashville number system and reading drum charts. They also talk about the song "I'll Always Take You With Me" and the thrill of playing it for Lauren Daigle.
In the final part of our chat, we explore the challenges of maintaining a balanced personal and professional life, especially when touring. Both musicians share their strategies, including staying present with their family while on tour, taking advantage of Nashville's style of touring, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Listen in for their invaluable advice for church musicians and worship drummers, emphasizing teamwork, support, and the concept that less is more.

“John Cooper really didn’t want me to try out.”
“The one thing I was sure of is that He would not be using me and my drumming because it was the thing that I felt the weakest at.”
“Even in my work with Skillet, It’s my weakness [drumming] - the one thing I thought He couldn’t use about me, that has become the very thing that He’s displayed His glory through!”
“It felt so clear to me that this has nothing to do with me and everything to do with Him lining things up.”
"If you’re faithful with the little/mundane, God can open and trust you with a lot."
"So many place their identity in drumming, music, and songwriting. We often mix up the calling of God with our own dreams and desires. But a healthy reminder is that those who lose their lives, find their lives."
“Music can be an idol for people - it can get mixed up because you can feel like your doing it for God.”
“I’m trying to be someone that has too much faith, rather than too little.”
“How do you do two bands at once? I don’t know, but God does!”

Episode 019 - Q&A With David Whitworth (Bethel Music)
Hey Worship Drummer Fam! I'm so excited to share with you the conversation I had with David Whitworth (Bethel). One of the questions we get asked a lot is, "How do you get that Bethel snare sound?" Then the follow up question is usually something like, "It sounds sooo good! Is it sampled?"
Well, today I am pleased to say that we have answers to all, or at least most, of your questions. We received just about 70 questions from our insta fam and in this episode we attempt to tackle them head-on.
Grab a coffee and hang on, this is gonna be a great one!

We tackle the topic in this episode by walking you through Payden's personal journey to Nashville, which was riddled with ups and downs. Listen to how he discovered and defines his true identity, and observe how it is not even tied to what he actually does as a drummer.

I’m scrubbing toilets right now, but You see me, and You love me!
“If I were here to scrub these toilets for the rest of my life, and that’s all I did, I could live in this moment and say thank You God that You love me and sent Your Son for me!”
Jesus came to die for you, and if He never did another thing for you, that is enough! Everything else is out of the goodness of His heart.
