WWRS: The Forge

Are your Metal intake levels below the RWL (Recommended Weekly Levels)? Then you've come to just the right place. Take a seat, set your Mosh buffers to maximum and get ready to experience pure, unadulterated Metal.

Don't be worried if your heart rate increases and your pupils dilate. That's perfectly normal, as is the sudden rhythmic twitching in your neck muscles. You are entering a musical zone in which it is safe to headbang.

Buckle up, buttercup.

WWRS: The Forge 2.13 - Unlucky For Some!
Unlucky for some?  It certainly was for this particular edition of The Forge.  Just as I was starting to pull the track listing together, the amount of new music that tickled my particular aural taste buds decreased to the point where it was a choice between pausing to stay with "all killer" or carry on with "filler". I obviously decided to keep to my personal standard of "all new killer, no filler" for my show. The unfortunate side effect was that you, my loyal listener, had to wait a few weeks for the next edition of the show. Hopefully you agree with me that the wait was worth it. The next one shouldn't take anywhere near as long. If you're enjoying the show, please pass the link on to anyone you know who you think might enjoy it too.  If you're in a band or know one that needs some extra attention, send me some music and if I like it, I'll play it on the show.  If you're able and want to help in a more concrete way, you can head over to patreon.com/metalscienceteacher and for the price of a coffee at Starbucks (other coffee chains are available), you can get yourself a mention on the show and access to the Patrons-only Discord, giving you direct influence on what happens in the show. Spread The Word.

WWRS: The Forge 2.12
Week 5 of the anti-virus lockdown and the world of Metal is still churning out quality music, even if no-one can get out on the road with it.  The big question, though, is "What have we got for you this week, then?"  Here's the answer: Nearly two hours of quality Hard Rock and Metal from all over the world. But this is WWRS: The Forge, so that's only to be expected, really, isn't it? As usual, if you like what you hear, you could help me out by heading over to patreon.com/metalscienceteacher and dropping me the price of a coffee or a beer. If you do, you'll get access to the WWRS: The Forge Discord server, you'll get access to the latest edition of The Forge before anyone else and the ability to request songs (and guarantee them being played), suggest subjects for WHO Knows and new Heavy Metal Science Teacher videos. Not bad for a couple of quid a month, is it?  Shall we?

WWRS: The Forge 2.11 - Getting A Bit Rant-y
Four weeks into lockdown and I think it's safe to say there's going to be a few people going a bit stir crazy.  Although most of the crazy seems to be coming from the American side of The Pond.  It would seem the old saying "You can't cure stupid" has got itself a new second half of the sentence.  I do have a little bit of a rant about that, so if you are a self-identifying "conservative", you might want to skip on, especially if you are of a more sensitive disposition. In terms of music, it's business as usual.  Loads of high quality Metal from all over the world, including Italy (what is it about Italy?  They're producing some excellent stuff and have been for a good few years now), Ukraine, the UK and plenty of other places from all around the planet.

WWRS: The Forge 2.5 - The One That Went Missing!
It's nearly the end of February and here's your latest almost regular dose of new quality Metal.  In this show, myself and my furry co-presenter (who only sticks around for the first link - typical cat) introduce you to a load of stuff you've never heard before.  In fact, if this edition of WWRS: The Forge DOESN'T introduce you to something you've never heard before, you can have your money back. And since I'm a Yorkshireman, that should help you understand how serious that I am about my commitment to new stuff. Plus we also celebrate 50 years of Heavy Metal with a bit of classic Sabbath.  Because Heavy Metal officially started on Friday 13th February 1970 with the release of Black Sabbath's debut, which means Pete Townsend's assertion that Heavy Metal was invented by The Who when they released Live At Leeds 16th May 1970 is a bit wide of the mark (it was recorded the day AFTER the Sabbath album was released, so it's possible THE WHO COPIED SABBATH). The cat has now met the pigeons....

WWRS: The Forge 2.10 - The One With The Very Long Songs
Don't panic... Empire Of The Clouds isn't one of the long songs in this week's edition of The Forge.  I do have SOME taste and discernment! Anyway, getting away from slagging off what is probably the worst song recorded by one of my favourite bands... Remember back in the old days of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show I used to have a bit of a weakness for playing very, very long songs? You will probably be glad to know I still have that weakness. There are a number of tracks in this week's show that last longer than 10 minutes. One even clocks in at over 20 minutes. As for the rest... well, really, all the songs bar the one I play out on are brand new, having arrived in my Inbox within the last week or so.  Give the show a listen and you will be treated to new songs by Old School Metal bands like Cirith Ungol, Nightblade and Thor and a selection of new up-and-comers like Sinisthra, Kult Of The Skull God and Deathless Legacy. Only the Helloween track, which was requested by one of our Patrons, Ms Steph Hewitt, has been on my main music hard drive for longer than a week. Anyway... Mosh buffers to maximum and play it loud!

WWRS: The Forge 2.9 - Quarantined... And Loving It!
Oops!  Have to admit I've surprised myself (but not necessarily in a pleasant way) in that this edition of The Forge has taken considerably longer to produce than I was expecting.  I'm going to blame the onset of a global pandemic of the coronavirus named COVID-19 for this one. Anyway, it's (as usual, if you don't mind me saying) a cracker of a show for you this time out.  There's new songs from Firewind, Testament, Jinjer and many others.  It just illustrates how global Metal truly is.  There are also contributions from Italy, the UK, Germany, Romania and quite a few other countries. Point your browsers over to patreon.com/metalscienceteacher and become a patron if you want to get the next one straight into your Inbox, exclusively early and help me improve audio quality. But let's stop beating around the bush. Mosh buffers to maximum! Thrash drives to full!

WWRS: The Forge 2.8 - Still Not Doing The Toxic Waltz
Thanks to some IT related shenanigans, this week's show is somewhat delayed. Basically, I attempted to trade in my laptop, but since the trade-in price was a massive drop from the estimate, I turned it down, so I've had to delay getting my new computer built. In other news, if you've ever thought, "Hmm... I'd really love to support Carl in making WWRS: The Forge, but have no idea how to do it", here's some ways: 1) This one specifically applies to bands, pluggers and labels: send me music so I can play it on the show. 2) Tip me off about bands I should be looking into. 3) Request songs. 4) Throw me some cash on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/metalscienceteacher) by either becoming a patron or just making an individual, one-off donation. 5) The most obvious one is to keep listening and telling your friends about WWRS: The Forge. As for the show itself, as usual, it's rammed full to bursting with new stuff. Again, the guarantee holds - if you don't hear something in this show that you've never heard before, I'll give you your money back. Do yourself a favour and turn it all the way up!

WWRS: The Forge 2.7 - How to not be Unclean!
Ahem... erm... this was meant to be coming out last weekend, but life got in the way. Anyway, here it is: episode 7 of season 2 of WWRS: The Forge.  If anyone is unfamiliar, The Forge is the sequel to The Wyrd Ways Rock Show, which I did for something like 10 years until a time when my mental health took a massive nosedive and I sacked it all off and seriously thought at jacking it in completely. The thing is, I started doing The Wyrd Ways Rock Show because of a total lack of Hard Rock and Metal radio that took the genre as a whole, rather than focussing on the sort of thing that was featured in the "hallowed" pages of Kerrap!  We now have Primordial Radio, so that should be the itch scratched, right?  As it turns out, wrong.  The itch came back when my mental health levelled off.  Especially when it became pretty obvious, my personal taste in music... that I base the show running orders on... are still not covered.  Despite the addition of new presenters, there are still niches not covered by Primordial or many other shows out there on the internet. So that's what The Forge is for.  The Forge shines light on the bands and music that other shows and stations don't know about. Anything else you need to know?  Not really.  Except that I guarantee you will hear music in this show that you've never heard before.  Just play it loud and tell your friends.

WWRS: The Forge 2.6 - It's Leap Day!
Any Manowar fans out there?  You're in for a bit of a treat, then.  Not only do we kick off with a bit of classic Manowar, we've also got a cover of another classic by a really rather excellent band (featuring a guest appearance) and something brand new from a certain Mr Friedman.  As usual, and probably more importantly, the commitment of The Forge to new music remains strong - new stuff from Jinjer, Five Finger Death Punch, Kaos Krew and Wishing Well amongst many others. As with the last show, I stand by the guarantee.  If you don't hear something you've never heard before in this edition of The Forge, I'll personally come round to your house and give you your money back! Mosh buffers to maximum, chums and let's do this!

WWRS: The Forge 2.4
This episode is brought to you by Aldi's Cookie Dough ice cream and the number.... erm.... 4?  Will that do the job?  I mean, it is the fourth 'cast of this Season 2 version of The Forge.  Anyway... loads and loads of new stuff plus some old stuff that's new, since it's never really been heard before.  Kind of makes you realize that Black Sabbath weren't the only ones ploughing the same furrow back in the late 60's and early 70's.  It's just that they got there first and they had something the others didn't that got them noticed. Anyway, here's the show for your delectation.  If you like it, tell your friends.  If you don't... well... take a long walk off a short pier.  I don't care.

WWR: The Forge 2.3
This one was supposed to come out last week. The problem is, the release schedules hadn't really kicked in enough that I could do a full show. OK, I could have filled up the rest of the airtime with old stuff, but that's not what The Forge is all about. The Forge is all about new stuff, so I delayed the release until it was all new stuff bar a couple of songs that I love. Since there's been a few more days of releases, the show is ready to roll out. So here it is. The first edition of The Forge of 2020. Now since we're now really officially in The Future, where's my f**king jetpack?!

WWRS: The Forge 2.2 - Falling from the top of Nakatomi Plaza
Hans Gruber has taken his fall off the top of the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles... so to quote Noddy Holder, "Iiiiiit's Chriiiiiistmaaaaaaas!" I don't normally do Christmas shows, but since this hasn't been a normal year, I thought I'd try and break my speed record for recording, mixing and publishing, and what you've got here is the result: A somewhat half-baked edtion of The Forge. It's even more random than usual, since the links were literally right off the top of my head and done as quickly as possible. Right then. Happy Christmas.  I'm off to bed.

WWRS: The Forge 2.1
Let's give this another try then, shall we? One of these days I'll hit a formula that works for me and you'll get yourself exposed to some of the best Metal you've ever heard. Yes, there'll be old stuff. There'll also be a lot of new stuff, since the mission here at The Forge is to help get some new stuff into your ears. Let's do this.

WWRS: The Forge 2.0 - Upping The Heaviosity!
When I started The Wyrd Ways Rock Show, there was really nothing on the radio or TV covering Hard Rock and Metal.  Since then, things have improved. with Primordial Radio (so good I bought part of the company!) getting the balance mostly right. That said, they don't really do much with the Heavier end.  Which is fair enough when you consider that Pete, their music co-ordinator isn't really into the PROPER Heavy stuff, and based on that, he doesn't really have the industry contacts in that area.  Neither do Moose or Dewsbury, for the same reason.  Shorty seems to be more into Pop Punk, so... you get the picture. That's not a negative criticism, by the way, it's just the way things are.  Plus, there's only so many hours in the day, so even if he was as immersed in this stuff as he would need to be, he wouldn't have the time. Obviously Primordial isn't the only Rock/Metal radio station, but it is the one with the least amount of Old Man Balls being played (you know what I mean - pretty much anything played on Planet Rock or Absolute Classic Rock).  So since they've got a lot of the Rock and Mainstream stuff covered, I'm going heavier. Basically, compare Download to Bloodstock.  If they're going to be Download, I'll be Bloodstock. So let's do it!

WWRS: The Forge 1.5 - Once More... With Feeling! (17/08/2019)
Let's try this again, shall we?  Now the old mental health is not so bad (even though I am still... erm... unbusy, so if anyone's got any jobs going, let me know!), I thought it was time to resurrect this whole podcast thing.  Believe it or not, this one's been brewing since March, so with a few tweaks, it's now ready. Let's light 'em up.

WWRS: The Forge 1.4 - 26/02/2019
The best laid plans, eh? Wasn't that Shakespeare himself who came up with that one?Anyway. Let's get back into The Forge. This one was supposed to come out last weekend, but I forgot to take my laptop with me when we went on a family trip to Edinburgh.Which is an excellent place, by the way. Didn't get to go in, but there's a club there by the name of Opium that definitely appears to have the right attitude, going by it's poster.Let's have some Metal...

WWRS: The Forge 1.3 - 23/01/2019
The first show of 2019, featuring some PROPER Heavy Metal, following in the footsteps of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show. With a few names dropping off during my lay off, I realized it was time to get this thing going again properly. Accept no substitute. The Forge prevails.

WWRS: The Forge 1.2 - An Entry for The Olympic Waffling Competition in 2020
Prepare for a dangerous journey through the brain of a tired presenter, late at night after being on his own at home all day with no one to talk to.  Except for the cats.  Obviously there's some cracking tunage, as there always is on The Forge, but... oh I don't half ramble on!Honestly, I just talked about whatever came into my head between songs.  That's what podcasts are supposed to be, aren't they?  If you just wanted music, you could have listened to Sp**ify (Don't do that!  They screw over the artists!  Do you realize how many plays someone needs to get a single penny?!).Listen, enjoy and don't be put off by the stream of consciousness!
