Since the holiday season for us with Asian heritage continues until the Lunar New Year season, we count ourselves as the lucky ones that we get to celebrate so much for so long!

Today, we are thrilled to have Laura back as our guest. Do you remember? Her voice is unforgettable, and we talked about Christmas traditions last year.

This year, we continue our holiday conversations - this time, about new year, new beginnings, and new year traditions. 今年，我們繼續我們的節日對話: 這一次，關於新年、新的開始和新年傳統。

In particular, we mentioned a very sweet tradition she shares with her friends - and parents. 我們特別提到了她與朋友和父母分享的一個非常甜蜜的傳統。

Today, we continue talking about a tradition she shares with her parents --- as a way to recap the best moments of the year, and a push for happiness. 今天，我們繼續談論她與她父母分享的傳統——以回顧一年中最美好幸福的時刻。

A Very Special New Year Tradition:

I think it’s really important to tell people if you love them that you love them. The best way to tell them is on new year’s, because you start a new chapter, and you ended one, so you want to appreciate them and so I always give my friends letters and tell them all the things I adore about them, all the hard things we’ve been through, on new years and that they should keep going and I love that, because my friends, we always keep the letters, and when we need some motivation, we re-read them, and we’ve done it for like years. My best friend and I we’ve been friends since we were one and a half, so we’ve been doing that since we were ten, and I do that with my new friends, it’s really emotional because it’s a recap of what had happened, and a year is a long time, it’s 365 days, that’s a lot of hours, it’s being grateful for friends, I love that.

Letters like these express full appreciation because not enough people do that and it’s so sad, and for them to say something from the heart and the level of depth is so nice. And I think I will do it my whole life. I’ve been doing it with my parents, we write down each thing that is important on a sticky note and put it in a glass, and at the end of the year, we pick it out and talk about how beautiful it is. You forget the little things that happen, and when you’re so much in the moment, you forget the feeling of happiness doesn't last forever, so we always put a date on it, it’s a push for happiness. Because you know, the harder things keep us down and the harder things somehow stick with us longer. And my best friend always picks out the best moments and she makes a book. You forget how happiness doesn’t last forever, but you’ll remember the feelings of happiness.

Today, we dive into the cultural differences between how we present ourselves on applications in the West.

• Marks aren't everything 在西方，分數並不代表一切。
• In the west, they want to see a well-rounded person, which means a full life beyond academics - extra-curricular activities, community involvement, etc. 他們希望看到一個 "well-rounded" 全面發展的人，這意味著學術之外的充實生活: 課外活動、社區參與等。
• When we see things differently, we end up putting emphasis on different things, this doesn't help us. 當我們以不同的方式看待事物時，我們最終會專注於不同的重點，這對我們沒有幫助。

This is a mindset difference, which can either limit our language or expand our world. 這是一種思考方式的差異，它可以限制我們的語言，要也可以擴展我們的世界。

We also talked about the importance of having a point of view - this is particularly true of life in the West.

在西方，我們必須有自己的觀點, 自己的POV, point of view.

Often for those of us with Asian heritage, we don't express our POV because we are afraid that we might say something wrong. However, in the West, we are educated to think that there is no "wrong point of view", to encourage us to think critically and creatively.

通常，對於我們這些有亞裔血統的人來說，我們不表達自己的觀點是因為我們擔心自己會說錯話。 然而，在西方，我們的老師告訴我們沒有“錯誤的觀點”，鼓勵我們批判性和創造性地思考。

• Down to earth = unpretentious, easy-going. 「Down to earth」 是一個含有褒義的片語，用來描述一個人性格謙遜、為人友善、踏實務實, 也很常拿來形容不擺架子, 接地氣, 好相處的人。
• "Earth" in North America, beyond the planet, also means 「泥土」。
• Down to earth: 3個字，不能多也不能少!

Today, we focus on some popular white wines:

• 廣受歡迎的長相思（Sauvignon Blanc）是釀製有獨特香味的白葡萄酒的葡萄品種。
• "Sauvignon" 在法文的意思為「野生」，而“Blanc”就是白的意思，即「野生的白葡萄」。 Sauvignon Blanc源自法國，在不同的產地更可培養出不同的風格。

• Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris 灰皮諾
• 法文叫Pinot Gris (s不發音)，義大利文叫Pinot Grigio。 酒體通常為輕或中等，有果香，喝起來順口，價格也比較親民。 之所以叫「灰」皮諾，是因為葡萄的外皮帶灰色。 釀酒的時候，葡萄皮的灰色就留在酒裡了。

• Muskateller: 莫斯卡托 (Moscato) 又稱麝香葡萄，是一種歷史悠久且分至眾多的白葡萄品種。

• Riesling: 作為芳香葡萄品種，雷司令（Riesling）釀造的葡萄酒香氣四溢，帶有高酸，既有甜型也有乾型，彷彿為夏日所生，必能解一份炎熱。人們通常認為雷司令是一種甜酒，因為在20世紀的大部分時間，德國的主要葡萄酒是各種甜度的雷司令。 但如今，德國的葡萄酒飲用者大多更喜歡雷司令乾白，其中許多較好的種類現在出口到了美國。在商標上尋找“Trocken”字樣，它的意思是 dry 乾葡萄酒。

What is the PSL?

PSL 是一種拿鐵咖啡!

• Pumpkin Spice Latte = 南瓜香料拿鐵

【注意所使用的動詞!】

我們去喝一杯吧！

• Let's grab a drink!
• Let's have a drink!
• Let's get a drink!
• But, we don't say, let's *drink* a drink! ❌

Normally, a PSL doesn't have alcohol, but a spiked one would!

A spiked drink = a drink that has alcohol in it, such as Irish coffee. 含有酒精的飲料，例如愛爾蘭咖啡。

• Spike can mean many things, but in the context of a drink, it means a drink with alcohol. 有很多含義，但在飲料中，它指的是含酒精的飲料。

Want to spike your coffee or latte? Try these:

• Kahlua
• Baileys
• Rum

Spiked PSL sometimes calls for:

• Vanilla vodka 香草伏特加

What is the PSL?

PSL 是一種拿鐵咖啡!

• Pumpkin Spice Latte = 南瓜香料拿鐵

• Spice = 香料

• Latte, sounds like [LAH-teh].

But… is there pumpkin in it?

I hate to break it to you, but there’s no pumpkin in PSL, PSL 中沒有南瓜，有的只是大量的糖。 What there is, is a lot of sugar. Because the pumpkin spice is often a syrup or a sugary powder. 因為南瓜香料通常是糖漿或糖粉。if you want to make it not such a sugar heavy drink you can do what I do, which is to say, “half syrup”. 如果你不想喝太多醣，你可以按照我的做法，也就是說，「半糖漿」。

• Half-syrup: 半糖

Today, we answer a listener's question. This listener ordered something online, and when he picked the regular shipping option, a message popped up that had the word, "hate" in the sentence.

今天，我們回答一位聽眾的問題。 這位聽眾在網路上訂購了一些東西，當他選擇常規運送選項時，賣家彈出一條訊息，句子中含有「hate」一詞。

To hate for someone to do something = to not want someone to do something.

I'd hate for you to go = I don't want you to go! 我不想讓你走！

I'd hate for you to miss out = I don't want you to miss out! 我不想讓你錯過機會！

We'd hate for you to miss out on free and fast delivery = 我們不想讓您錯過免費快速的送貨服務!

I'd hate for you to get sick = I don't want you to get sick! 我可不想讓你生病！

• Today, we go through a scene between Leo and Jacky, where Leo says to Jacky, "I've looked into it". 今天，我們回顧 Leo 和 Jacky 之間的場景，Leo 對 Jacky 說：「我已經調查過了」。
• I've looked into it = I did my research, I checked on it.
• To look into it = to understand something better, 更好地理解某事。

Another parent-child scene is between Jacky and Ruby, where Ruby says, "don't put this on me." 另一個親子場景是在Jacky和Ruby之間，Ruby說，“don't put this on me.”

• Don't put this on me = 別怪我, don't blame me, don't put the fault on me.
• Continuing the mother-daughter scene, this one happens on page 65, where Jacky says to Ruby, "I thought I would fail you."
• I thought I would fail you = I thought I would disappoint you, to let you down.
• To fail someone = to let someone down, to disappoint someone. 讓某人失望。

In casual conversation, much of the vocabulary used is very simple. Do you notice phrases with simple words but are used in a way you don't quite understand? 在日常對話中，許多詞彙都非常簡單。 您是否注意到一些單字簡單但使用方式您不太理解的短語？

Today's scene brings us back to Ruby's high school, in the classroom where choir practice is held.

Bernardo, the choir director, seeing all the students seated, said, "I did not tell you to sit. On your feet, my friends, up! Up!"

• On your feet = 站起來 stand up

In our last session, we talked about the scene where Ruby meets her parents in the car, when they were blasting music. We mentioned that:

• Blasting (很吵) = playing (music) at a very high volume.
• If music is blasting, perhaps you would want to ask that they "turn it down". 如果音樂很吵，也許你會想要求他們「把它關小」。It is NOT "can you be quiet"

In our every day life, this could come in handy, because if the music/volume is too loud, then there are several ways to ask for the sound to be lower, but we never use the word, "small". 如果音樂太大聲，有幾種方法可以要求聲音小一些, 但我們從來不使用“小 small”這個詞。

【關鍵字】

• Turn it down
• Make it softer
• Turn the volume lower

相反，如果音樂/聲音太小，我們會要求增加音量/聲音。Conversely, if the music/sound is too soft, we would ask to increase the volume/sound:

• to make it louder,
• to turn it up,
• 不是 NOT "higher" the volume, or "bigger".

To turn it up = 調高音量 = to increase the volume, to make it louder. 增加音量，使聲音更大。

【Attention 注意】

• Everything but 不是“但是”!
• Everything but = everything except for = 它的意思是"除了"
• i.e. Every day but Sunday = all the days except for Sunday
• i.e. Everything but onions = all the toppings except for onions

• Pull up: when a car pulls up, it means that it stopped.

When a car is stopping 當汽車停下來時：

• If you are outside the car 如果你在車外, the car is pulling up.
• If you are inside the car 如果您在車內, the car is pulling over.

【關鍵字】

• Mortified = embarrassed and shocked, in an awkward way.
• Blasting (很吵) = playing (music) at a very high volume.
• If music is blasting, perhaps you would want to ask that they "turn it down". 如果音樂很吵，也許你會想要求他們「把它關小」。It is NOT "can you be quiet"
• To turn it down = to lower the volume 把它關小, 降低音量
• To turn it up = 調高音量 = to increase the volume, to make it louder. 增加音量，使聲音更大。

Today, we continue to touch upon some colloquialism!

* colloquialism = 俗話

Last time, we talked about the phrase, "to put up with someone", which means, to deal with someone - usually annoying/frustrating. 上次，我們談到了這個短語，"to put up with someone" - 忍受某某。

In this scene, Constance asks the President, how he puts up with someone, to which he responds, " He used to run NASA. He knows where all the bones are buried. Comes in handy." 在這一幕中，康斯坦斯問總統，他如何忍受某某，他回答說：“他曾經管理過美國宇航局。他知道所有骨頭都埋在哪裡。非常有用。”

• To run a place = to be the boss of the place. To call the shots. If someone runs this place, it means he/she is 老闆。
• To know where all the bones are buried = to know where the skeletons are = to know everything, especially where all the bad things are. 知道一切。
• Comes in handy = very useful! 派上用場, 非常有用！
• I'll bet = for sure = 當然

A repeated phrase by Will Smith's character, is "not until the fat lady sings!" 威爾·史密斯飾演的角色重複說過一句話：“直到胖女士唱歌！”

• This phrase has nothing to do with fat people! It means, "it's not over until the very end". 這句話跟胖子無關！It means, “不到最後一刻，事情還沒有結束”。
• This phrase comes from opera~ a Wagner opera, in particular, where usually, a "fat lady" sings at the very end. So, it means the very end, the final act. 這句話出自歌劇~尤其是瓦格納的歌劇，通常在最後由一位胖女人演唱。 所以，它意味著最後的一幕。

今天給大家介紹一些吐嘈抱怨的短語!

One scene involves Boomer (the dog), Jasmine, and Steve.

Steve is Will Smith's character. Jasmine is Steve's girlfriend. In this scene, Boomer does something really cute, and Jasmine says to Steve, "he's trying to impress you."

• "He's trying to impress you" means he wants you to think he's really amazing.
• The word "impress" is often mis-translated, 這個 "impress" 不是留下深刻印象!
• To be tired of something 不是感到厭倦! It means to have had enough of something = 受夠了

In another scene, Constance says to the President, "I don't know how you put up with him!" 我不知道你是怎麼忍受他的！

• To put up with someone = to deal with someone, to be with someone = 忍受某人, 不是把某某放在哪裡!

生活並不總是美好的，所以我希望今天的短語能幫助你更好地應對每一天!

Today, we continue to touch upon some colloquialism!

* colloquialism = 俗話

In our last session, we talked about "let's not jump the gun". To jump the gun = 操之過急, which has its origins from sports. 這句話來自於體育運動。Some translation tools will translate this into, "one step ahead", but they don't exactly mean the same thing. 一些翻譯程序會將其翻譯為“領先一步”，但它們的含義並不完全相同。

The origin of the idiom "jump the gun" traces back to early 1900s track and field races, where a gun is fired to signal the start of a race. A runner who begins running before the race has been started has "jumped the gun". "To jump the gun" 的起源可以追溯到 1900 年代早期的田徑比賽，鳴槍表示比賽開始。在比賽開始之前就開始跑步的跑步者“操之過急”。

On a note relevant to "running", we also talk about "to run a story".

• To run a story = to publish a story, to cover a story, 發布一個故事.
• To cover up = 掩蓋
• "Cover up" as a noun, means an article of clothing that covers the bathing suit. 作為名詞，意思是覆蓋泳衣的衣服。

Another common expression in casual conversation that school will not teach us 一句學校不會教的話:

• to be up someone's *ss = 惹惱某人

Incidentally, if you combine the 2 points above, you get another common phrase. Do you know which one?

Out of the loop + in the loop

• Out of the loop = 圈外 = those who don't know/don't have access to information
• in the loop = 圈內 = those in the know

Today, we touch upon some colloquialism!

• colloquialism = 俗話

“Let’s not jump the gun” = 我們不要操之過急

= Let’s not put the cart before the horse = 我們不要本末倒置。

* Always pay attention to our verbs and adjectives when we are translating.

* Most of the miscommunications come from different choices in verbs and adjectives 大部分的溝通錯誤來自於動詞和形容詞的不同選擇。這不僅僅是詞彙的問題, 這是一種不同的思維方式。


Run, as a verb, depending on context, can have many meanings. Run, 作為動詞, 取決於上下文有多種含義：

To run a test, or to run something, means to do a test, to do something.

Run = 運行

• Gourmet, sounds like [ goor'MAY ], it basically describes food that is fancy (高檔食品), or someone who enjoys fancy food/drinks (講究飲食的人).
• Munching = 咀嚼
• Take a bite = 嚐一嘗, 如果你想讓別人嚐嚐(食物)，你可以說 “Take a bite”，而不是說“Eat”.
• Chew it slowly = 慢慢吃
