SUMMARY: It was six degrees of Kevin Bacon Pittsburgh style! The Cheese Queen, whose family cornered the grocery market with the McGinnis name, is doing the same for cheese and charcuterie, and she just may be adding some new fall honey to her boards. Ryan Rust, who is also premiering his documentary, Hive, at the Lindsay Theater on Feb.4 brought quite the sampling. The writer behind On The Rocks, Maria Palmer, reminds us of the Primadonna Restaurant’s rise and fall, and adds some ricotta cheese stories that made the queen herself make some room on her charcuterie tray.

Growing up, Meg McGinnis’ family owned a multi-generational grocery market that dated back to 1946. Meg learned her love of Charcuterie from her grandmother and would go on to work in the specialty meats and cheese section of that family business, where her expertise grew even further as she experimented with different pairings. Located in Mt. Oliver, The Cheese Queen was born serving up charcuterie boards, grazing tables, and much more.

Ryan M. Rust is a filmmaker & colorist based in Pittsburgh. Over the last several years he has worked with multiple production companies and storytellers throughout the U.S., including regional and national advertisements for Guardian Protection and GNC. His most recent documentary short film, Hive, follows the story of Hank B., a local beekeeper and skilled carpenter whose passion for honeybees extends far beyond conventional beekeeping.  Catch his film at the Lindsay Theater on Feb. 4.

Maria Palmer stopped to see the jags again after visiting multiple US cities to talk about the success of her book On The Rocks, the story about the rise and fall of her family’s restaurant, The Primadonna. Who knew that writing with her high school teacher would create such a media frenzy that led to cook and book events?

*Channing Powell of Made in Pgh helped us get through Dry January with some great mocktail suggestions.

What is your go-to cold weather comfort food?

Joanne Harrop: Fashion and features come easy to JoAnne, who has been a reporter for the Trib for more than 25 years. A graduate of Penn State University, she has received numerous awards for her work, most recently the story of her days in lockdown with her mother and received a National Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in feature reporting. Now it is a relatable book birthed right here in the 412.

Her goal is to bring the world of wine to your table and for everyone to feel welcome.

Angie and Jeremy of Discover the Burgh were live in studio and since it is dry January, they hit us up with some new places to simply nosh.

Brandon Payne: Brandon started playing percussion in high school but put down the sticks and focused on his guitar playing. He plays both cover songs and original music, and is often compared to Zach Bryan, and can be found most often at Helltown in the Strip District.

Kenny Pickett: John and Rach created a makeshift decisionmaker called Kenny Pickett-which is KP on a stick. Our musicians decide their favorite, this or that.

Stacy Stec of LOL Entertainment is responsible for bringing the Museum of Illusions Pittsburgh to the North Shore.  After 12 years of teaching, Stacy laid eyes on MOI (Museum of Illusions) and knew it was the next intriguing perception-style establishment to reside in major cities.  She picked Pittsburgh just from riding through our Fort Pitt tunnels, and although from Chicago, she nods to Pittsburgh for originating the jagoff term of endearment.

Alanna & Dara add they’re a big advocate of finding your tribe. “Finding the unlikely people who will help you out of the muck because no one really understands until you’re in it.” www.act.alz.org/pittsburghrivalz
