Marc Miller Chat’s about his book “Repurpose Your Career - A practical Guide for Baby Boomers
If Marc Miller could have seen the future when he wrote his first book: Repurpose Your Career, A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers, he might have called it Life As You Know It Is About to Change…A Lot. Since the 2008 economic downtown left many Baby Boomers unable to retire, Marc decided to use his own experiences to help others pivot to a career that would fulfill them for the next 20 years. In his second book, *Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the Second Half of Life* he addressed the fact that the people seeking him out weren’t all Baby Boomers. Many in Generation X were also either dissatisfied with their careers or were being displaced by ongoing technological and social disruption. *Repurpose Your Career third edition* responds to another huge shift in work: In this age of disruption, digitization, and the gig economy, people need a new mindset and strategies to become continual learners, create their own flexible careers, and cope with ageism. This book helps them do it. Miller’s Career Pivot.com has been listed as a top career site by organizations including Forbes and Career Sherpa, and his strategies for a career transition have been featured on Mashable, Life Hacker, Money, Flexjobs and Sixty & Me. His second book was listed as one of the best career books of all time by Book Authority. A “recovering engineer,” who spent years working at IBM, Miller’s own career journey started when his bicycle collided with a car, nearly ending his life. The experience changed his perspective on what he was doing with his time and launched him on a search for career fulfillment, leading him to jobs including teaching in the inner city, fundraising for a non-profit, and working for startups. He decided to parlay his experiences—and his engineer’s expertise at breaking big tasks into manageable steps—into helping others find long-lasting career fulfillment. Today, though unemployment is at record lows for all age groups, employee satisfaction numbers have remained low. Everyone wants a job that’s meaningful and fulfilling to them as individuals, but few know how to evaluate an opportunity for those criteria. Instead, they focus on things like money and location, not realizing that more impactful factors to their happiness might include how much time they interact with others, whether the role requires multitasking or single focus, and what level of emotional support they need. Complicating matters is the fact that entire industries can virtually disappear overnight and that many people will wind up doing a series of jobs and side gigs rather than having one long-term role with a single employer. Every worker—regardless of age—needs to avail themselves of every opportunity to learn and grow rather than expecting someone to train them. And they to look not for a role to fill but a problem to solve. Written with professional writer Susan Lahey, Repurpose Your Career, the third edition is not only an easy read but packed with practical information and specific action steps. It’s the guidebook people in their 40 and beyond need to carry them into the next phase of life. That’s it for us. Stay tuned for the all-new Yak About Today when season 6 begins.

Mark Belt M.D Speaks To David Yakir About His New Program - The ABC’s of Well-Being
Dr. Belt has developed a program that reprograms the subconscious mind from negative to positive at any age.  It is recommended for ages 12 and older.  There is no maximum age limit. -The entire ABCs of Well-being program is based on math and science.  Why is it based on math? Math is the universal language of creation and works 100 % of the time.  Each step of the ABCs is based on clinical studies that increase the number of neurotransmitters in your brain and body.  This helps to fortify the mind-body connection and fertilize the growth of the new subconscious mind. -The ABCs online course includes 12 Lessons with a total of 2-1/2 hours of teaching.  Each lesson is named for a letter of the alphabet and has been scientifically researched to increase neurotransmitters (nerve chemicals) throughout the body so they are available to fortify the mind-body connection.  Just as we learned the alphabet by our subconscious mind, we will use it to reprogram our subconscious mind. -There are two parts to the ABCs program.  The first section includes background and teaching on well-being and the subconscious mind.  The second part of the program includes the application of ABCs to reprogram the subconscious mind and make an easy, efficient and lasting transformation.  Each action helps the mind and body to communicate and provide a supply of chemicals to enhance the reprogramming of the subconscious mind. -After completing the course, the participant will have tools to begin their life using their mind and body in the way it was designed.  They will be able to use their mind for them instead of against them.  The ABCs of Well-being course will help anyone go from mental chaos and disconnection from life to conscious awareness, transformation and creation of the life that they want. --------------------------------- “YOU CAN'T GO BACK AND CHANGE THE BEGINNING, BUT YOU CAN START WHERE YOU ARE AND CHANGE THE ENDING. Didn’t We Used to Rule The World - What Happened? - Jeff Ginsberg and David Yakir Try to Figure it Out!
Thanks for listening. So I’ve been thinking about an on-line conversation I was having with my friend and former colleague Jeffrey Ginsberg. It was one of those reflective conversations where we spoke about our heyday in the advertising business - where we held a place at the top of an industry. We congratulated one another on our brilliance and our success - and then the conversation paused - we looked at one another - our faces were not the faces of the 45-year-olds who ruled. And then we became circumspect. Jeff and I shared a lot of experiences in our industry. And although we came up through the ranks differently, there was a kinship there. You see, Jeff worked his way up from the bottom, beginning as a messenger for an advertising agency and then steadily moving up the ranks to improbably reach the corner office. He made his reputation on his stewardship of likes of Samsung Motorola, Brother International, and AT&T just to name a few. He would eventually launch his own agency called Badalato-Ginsberg, and then life happened. So that’s what we’ll yak about today ---------------------------------------- # SOCIAL MEDIA STUFF #yakabouttoday/SOCIAL Social Media Attachment for all publications “YOU CAN'T GO BACK AND CHANGE THE BEGINNING BUT YOU CAN START WHERE YOU ARE AND CHANGE THE ENDING. When did I get old -- May 20 2019
Hey thanks for listening. David here and I’ve been thinking about the conversation we had last night at dinner. And while i’m at it, The dinner consisted of a garlic and balsamic marinated skirt steak on the grill with grilled summer squash, zucchini, onions. A great butter leaf salad and a double chocolate cake that bill made for desert. Once again we found ourselves telling stories about getting older and of course the question keeps coming up “at what point did we realize we were old.

What is Empathy and Where has it gone? Yakir Speaks with Minter Dial about his book Heartificial Empathy
Welcome to yak about today, I’m david yakir and i’ve been thinking. I’ve been thinking about empathy. Theres been a great deal of talk about how the current occupier of the white house lacks empathy. I’m not sure many people know what that means. When Bill Clinton said “I feel your pain” was that an example of empathy. There are many definitions of empathy that encompass a broad range of emotional states, but basically it is our capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing. What role does empathy play in today’s modern society? What is the role of empathy in business. I’ve invited Minter dial, whose new book Heartificial Empathy answers many of those questions. So that’s what we’ll yak about today. Heartificial Empathy: Now on Amazon #empathy, #emotion, #yakabouttoday

188 I’ve Been Thinking About The New Year and WHAT Yak About Today Should Be – A SOLO SHOW
Thanks for joining us. I’m David yakir and you are listening to yak about today. And as always – I’ve been thinkin. So, that’s what we’ll yak about today. So my friends you must have noticed that at the beginning of the show I didn’t say i’ve been thinking about a particular topic or we had a guest interview. Nope, I’ve just been thinking. You see, every year or so – usually around New Years, I re-evaluate the show. try to find ways to improve the show. Get the feedback. Look at the shows that work – and those that don’t. Also, I look at the emails and tweets that have recommendations. And by the way, I enjoy the emails, tweets that are complimentary. The criticisms – well not so much – but they are teaching moments I guess. and as you all know much of the communications that we in the media receive these days are over the top and extreme at times. The compliments can almost make you feel godly. And some of the criticisms are either borderline hate mail or somewhat threatening. It used to be that the majority of the hate mail was gay related. That has been surpassed by some very strong opinions about politics. But as most of you know, This show has been always dedicated to the wiser and more mature of us, covering topic that may be helpful as we age, From technology to health and nutrition – finances, employment opportunities – learning to be an entrepreneur or even how to improve your memory. And at times the arts. And as you know and hear every week at the beginning of the show, we say if you are familiar with the years 46 to 64 than this is the place you want to be. But that only works if we are covering the topics that are important to you or have conversations that you relate to. I always ask this time of year for you to email me or tweet me with your suggestions for topics and conversations that you’re interested in. The more i receive the better the show is. Sending in your thoughts and ideas allows me to book guests that would be of interest to you. So, why not take a stab at writing me at yakabouttoday@gmail.com or tweet me at yakabouttoday. And tell me how i can make this show better for you. So what do we have planned for this season. Number one, later this season we will be using using a new platform called Spreaker which will allow us to broadcast live over several of the social media platforms. In addition we are setting up a system where we can take live phone calls live on air. In addition, when appropriate we will broadcast the show with video when we think the show will benefit more when you can see it. (and of course that will allow you to see my pretty face.) ——- Over the next few months, the team will be developing a new podcast tentatively titled Yak’s Tales. A biographical podcast where everyone will get to tell the stories that made them who they are today. We will tell you more as we develop the concept. # Topics #yakabouttoday/020419 Ok, since we don’t have any quests lined up for today, why don’t we rifle through our notes and see if we can find anything of interest for you. And even though I didn’t schedule a question and answer session today. Something came across my desk yesterday that i thought was interesting enough to chat about. A listener from Scotland, who is one of my favorite podcasters asked a question – well not so much a question as a statement. He said – you should have more mental health professionals – some shrinks, therapists – psychiatrists on your show. Maybe you’ll get more insight into what’s going on with – as you say – the wiser and more mature of us. Well – here’s my story that I’ll share with you. # How Exercise May Help Keep Our Memory January 16, 2019 04:00 AM

187 From Quito Ecuador, Marcel Perkins Takes us on a Tour of Peru and Equador
Marcel likes to highlight companies doing a superlative job in Latin America for upscale travelers. Sometimes you may not have heard of these companies because they’re “inbound” tour companies. You contact someone to book a Galapagos tour, for instance, and a company like Latin Trails is the one actually taking care of you on the ground the whole time. We hit up experienced tour planner Marcel Perkins, who is general manager of that company, for advice on traveling in South America. How did Latin Trails get its start and where do you operate tours in South America? Latin Trails started as an extension of a lifelong passion of traveling throughout Latin America. My first trip to Ecuador took place when I was less than a year old. Eventually my parents decided to move from New Jersey (USA) to Quito when I was 7. We kept our U.S. ties but Latin America turned out to be our playground. We traveled the entire continent several times and helped hundreds of visitors organize their trips, and sometimes we led them as well. I decided to give the business a formal turn in 2002 and Latin Trails started as an Ecuador based destination management company. Today we offer custom trips throughout Ecuador and Peru for travelers who search for private services, customized itineraries, and a 24/7 concierge service for a worry-free trip. To compliment these services we operate 2two boutique yachts in the Galapagos Islands: The Galapagos Sea Star Journey and The Galapagos Seaman Journey. We also run trips on an Amazon riverboat out of Iquitos: The Cattleya for eight passengers. We’ll soon be adding another ship there, Spondias. In Ecuador we will be adding a luxury boutique hotel in Quito for 2017.

186 I Always Wanted to be a Fireman – So I went to Melbourne Australia to find Brent Clayton to Show me How
Thanks for listening, I’m David yakir and you know I’ve been thinking about the time when I was young and wanted to be a fireman. It followed me one way or another throughout my life. Those stories later. But now I had a chance to speak to a real fireman albeit from Melbourne Australia and how he’s used his experience to coach others. Warning: For the USA audience, listen carefully – accent coming your way. So that’s what we’ll yak about today. About The Career Project At The Career Project, we believe that choosing a career or changing career is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. And we know from experience that you can’t figure it out by sitting at home researching careers online and trawling job search sites. To make an informed career decision we believe you should get out of the house and experience it in the real world!  This means talking to industry insiders face-to-face so you can really begin to understand whether your career idea is aligned with your personality, strengths and values.  Industry insiders are also vital to providing you with accurate and timely information in regard to how easy or difficult it is to secure employment in that field, and what you can do to increase your opportunities. The Career Project will help you identify an Industry Mentor in your area of interest who is willing to share their knowledge at an Informational Interview or Job Shadow Opportunity. Our mentors are committed to helping you make a better career decision by providing you with insights into the role, the industry and the work environment.  This is important information that simply cannot be obtained via online research or by attending University Open Days and Career Expos. The experience with a mentor will validate and test your ideas to see whether your potential career choice is going to suit YOU. This will potentially save you unnecessary expenses such as study fees, business set-up costs and much more if you choose a career that isn’t the right fit.

Welcome to The Active Life Education, honesty, and integrity are cornerstones of our patient care approach. When you understand your condition you become an intricate piece in the puzzle to resolve it. Unprecedented access to doctors – Hands on care – Measurable results – Systemized approach Inspiring for Active People The Active Life Chiropractic and Soft Tissue is comfortably located in Island Park, New York just a quarter mile north of Long Beach, New York and a mile South of Oceanside. It is very easily accessible from Rockville Centre and most towns on Long Island and Queens. It is commonly understood that when you visit a chiropractor you can expect relief from conditions like lower back pain, back pain, and neck pain, but because we specialize in the treatment of sports injuries at The Active Life, we treat injuries related to knee pain, elbow pain, ankle pain and shoulder pain just as effectively every day. If you have pain caused by a spinal disc injury, muscle, ligament, tendon, or joint and you are not in need of surgery, The Active Life is the office for you. Our office blends the traditional treatment methods used by a chiropractor with those used in physical therapy at the highest level to treat sports injuries more effectively than any other office in the world. The best news, we are right here in Island Park, New York, just a quarter mile north of the Long Beach Bridge. CrossFit Athletes especially enjoy working with us here at The Active Life. With the top CrossFit athletes in the world flying out regularly from all over the world for their evaluations, treatments, and continuing exercise protocols the CrossFit population has taken an especially deep interest in The Active Life. One of the reasons The Active Life has become so popular with CrossFitters (besides the quality of care) is that our office is directly attached to CrossFit Island Park (formerly CrossFit King of the Beach in Long Beach New York) which is a gym that has been recognized on the biggest stage in the CrossFit world at the CrossFit Games. Whether you are an athlete with a sports injury or an individual who just wants to have less pain doing the laundry or working in the garden, your treatment is likely to eventually land you in our gym to learn how you can best work to improve your strength and mobility wherever you currently work out. We understand that when you are looking for a Chiropractor or Physical Therapy that our office is unique in our approach and might not be what you thought you were looking for. We also understand that if you are dealing with sports injuries, back pain, neck pain, lower back pain, knee pain, elbow pain, shoulder pain, or any musculoskeletal dysfunction, there is nowhere better in the world for you to go for care. If you live in Long Beach, Island Park, Oceanside, or Rockville Centre we are less than 15 minutes away. With patients flying in from all over the world for treatment at The Active Life, we strongly recommend you make the drive.

Yak About Today with David Yakir
The Maura Sweeney Story Between 1974 and the present, my transformation from the inside out! Over the years, I’ve come a long way. When I was a youth and a pre-teen, my grandmother called me “Waterworks” because I could cry at the drop of a hat. Growing up, I felt powerless, isolated, restricted and most of all groomed. In my case, the “grooming” was focused on all my outside accomplishments and attributes rather than from a nurturing of my true self.  We’ve all got some kind of outer expectations, parental training and other social messaging that can cause us to go astray from our true self by following what’s outside rather than waiting to bloom from our inner soul.  If pictures could tell a thousand words, then the above series of photos should do just that. They demonstrate how, by choosing to live happy and authentically from my inner thoughts, intentions and choices, I’ve emerged as a brighter and more confident person. Most people remark that I looked lonely and bereft and heavy-laden (even without the suitcases!) in that first image above, yet I was only 15 years old! In the second image, I’m 23 and mid-way through law school studies. About a month later, I couldn’t get up from my own chair to drive myself to class. When I tried to speak, no audible words came out of my mouth. I was unable to express myself! Many people reach their “Waterloo” moment, but this was mine.  Unable to continue in a future 40 year law career and an identity I never wanted, I exited law school and my family’s long held expectations to follow my own path. I needed to feel the light within me reignite and, while I had no idea as to what my next act would be or how I’d proceed forward, I set out on my own journey.  You can read more about my life afterward in several of my blogs and books, but toward career purpose) to today.

Am I Too Old? Ask Mac Prichard
I’m lucky enough to think young, act young and keep myself physically young. BUT, am i really too old to go back into the workforce.  I asked my new friend Mac Prichard to help me out here. When Mac’s List began, it didn’t have a name. It wasn’t a company. It was just one person who wanted to serve his professional network and help people find work that mattered to them. Back in 2001, Mac Prichard started emailing job openings to a few dozen friends and colleagues. He wanted to keep in touch and share great work opportunities that he had found. Today, Mac’s List has grown to an online community of over 45,000 people. But our goals remain the same: to help people discover meaningful work opportunities in Portland, Oregon, and beyond.   Mac’s List is more than a regional job board. We’re the premier resource for helping passionate, creative professionals learn how to find meaningful and rewarding work in Portland, Oregon, and Washington. Besides our job listings, Mac’s List also shares job search advice and resources through our books, podcast, and online courses. And as a Certified B Corporation, we’re part of a global movement to use business as a force for social good. Whether you’re looking for your first job, hoping to find a better job or just need tools to manage the direction of your career, the Mac’s List team is here to help.   Yak About Today is your GPS guide for #technology, #fitness, #automotive, #finance #entrepreneurship, #entrepreneurship & all things that mean anything to you. 181 Doc Glenn Livingston knows how to stop Binge Eating - Now listen and STOP IT!
Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company’s)  previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page.  You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV.    Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.  Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

181 Thom King takes us on a Keto Journey – Yak About Today Summer Series Continues
I woke up that morning in a suite at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. I felt terrible. I was in town for a trade show and the night before a client had taken me to dinner. We ordered these massive, hundred-dollar steaks, drank several glasses of wine, and gorged ourselves on ice cream and desserts. I’d brought the leftovers back to the room and they were still sitting on the counter. I glanced around the room. Although they had upgraded my room to a suite, the place was run down and sad. There was a Jacuzzi in the middle of the room and the place reeked of alcohol a previous guest had spilled. I got out of bed and looked at myself in the full-length mirror. I was six-foot-two and I weighed 235 pounds I carried it well, but, not well enough. I felt sick. I was flabby and tired and filled with regret and remorse. I was going through my second divorce, I was in a lawsuit with my first wife, and my blood pressure was so high that my doctor had put me on medicine to control it. Vegas baby! As I stood in front of the mirror, I asked myself, “How the hell did I get here?” Part CEO, part personal development wonk, and part biohacker info geek, King is a self-confessed serial entrepreneur. While his favorite book list contains many success-oriented and personal-development classics, the classic definition of achieving success (e.g. make a lot of money) is not what inspires or motivates King. He follows more of a “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good” line of thinking. King’s company has been built around the simple principle of “do the right thing.” Founded by King in 1999, Stevia Brands Inc. is one of the largest importers, manufacturers and distributors of clean-label sweetening systems and natural sweeteners. Emulating such renowned entrepreneurs such as the Wright Brothers and Steve Jobs, King started his company by first asking the critical question, “Why?” Based on the understanding that it’s only by determining the “why” of what you want to do that you can achieve lasting success, King’s business isn’t simply something he does for a living. It stands as a testament to who he is, what he does and how he lives his life. King’s “why” is simple. A bit of a foodie and health nut, food has always been a passion for King — particularly high-quality food that makes the planet a healthier place and maintains a level of sustainability. He founded Steviva as a way to effectively help combat metabolic disease and the “diabesity” (his self-coined term) epidemic in this country by offering clean-label sweetening systems to replace sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup.

128 My young porn story, Cheers to Local Radio and a Wall Street Journal tory that pissed me off
[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget] 128 My young porn story, Cheers to Local Radio and a Wall Street Journal tory that pissed me off So I’ve been thinking about the new laws being proposed in the UK. You see, you now have to be 18 years old and get a pass with a code to get online and watch Porn. It reminded me of the how I bought porn when I was young. Imagine how different today is. Porn is just an accepted part of being a teenager. Also, I go on a Wall Street Journal rant about how the more senior of should behave and change our appearance to keep our job. And a shout out to local radio. @import url(https://yakirgroup.com/wp-content/plugins/siteorigin-panels/css/front-flex.min.css); #pgc-3181-0-0 , #pgc-3181-0-1 { width:50%;width:calc(50% - ( 0.5 * 30px ) ) } #pl-3181 #panel-3181-0-0-0 , #pl-3181 #panel-3181-0-1-0 { } #pl-3181 .so-panel { margin-bottom:30px } #pl-3181 .so-panel:last-child { margin-bottom:0px } #pg-3181-0.panel-no-style, #pg-3181-0.panel-has-style > .panel-row-style { -webkit-align-items:flex-start;align-items:flex-start } #panel-3181-0-0-0> .panel-widget-style { background-color:#2b3b85;border:1px solid #bcbcbc } @media (max-width:780px){ #pg-3181-0.panel-no-style, #pg-3181-0.panel-has-style > .panel-row-style { -webkit-flex-direction:column;-ms-flex-direction:column;flex-direction:column } #pg-3181-0 .panel-grid-cell { margin-right:0 } #pg-3181-0 .panel-grid-cell { width:100% } #pgc-3181-0-0 { margin-bottom:30px } #pl-3181 .panel-grid-cell { padding:0 } #pl-3181 .panel-grid .panel-grid-cell-empty { display:none } #pl-3181 .panel-grid .panel-grid-cell-mobile-last { margin-bottom:0px } }

127 or 167 I’ve Been Thinking About Mother’s Day and Introducing #Podbean Not sure why this past mother’s day caught me by surprise. Bill’s mom and my mom are long gone now. We celebrated with one of our close friends Miriam. Bill is Miriam’s personal chef. We decided to go to one of the more exclusive clubs in Florida (not Miramar ugh!). From the environment to the peeps at the table, it was nothing but fascinating. So I go on a long form stream of consciousness rant about it. Easier to turn off here than it is if you are listening to the radio broadcast. Also, we have finally pulled Yak About Today out of this site and moved it to #podbean as its new hosting platform. It is one of global greats, handling many of the great ones.  We also make it easy to find. Just type #yakabouttoday.com. See below our showpage graphic

On top of that, the app checks your credit score regularly, sends alerts about bill payments, and provides extensive budgeting options that let you set spending goals and check your progress. Going beyond some of the standard money-management apps, Mint will also warn you about any unusual charges on your bank account and give you personalized spending tips. And it performs all these tasks without requiring much maintenance on your end. Just check that Mint is compatible with your bank account so you can take advantage of its useful automatic-sync feature. Mint offers both mobile and web apps, and it is completely free to use. We Forget things as we age. What is Normal and What should drive you to see the Doc Odds are, you won’t be as flexible at age 60 as you were at 20. Or as fast. Or strong. Time affects your body, and your brain comes right along for the ride. Connections between brain cells that make and pull up memories change as we age. And the proteins and hormones that do upkeep in our brains don’t work as well. As we get older, it’s good to know the difference between typical forgetfulness and something you probably should mention to your doctor. Listen and feel better, you are no different than anyone else. Also, we thought it would be fun to play with a cohost. Shooting the Shit with Wayne; Companies hiring 65+; Are Smart Phones making us Dumber?
Shooting the Shit with Wayne; Companies hiring 65+; Are Smart Phones making us Dumber? COMPANIES ARE HIRING THE OVER 70 CROWD. Of course, there are obvious downsides of the geriatric demographic: They may be luddites, fossilized in their ways, or burnt out or lethargic, and—it’s true—the clock is ticking. But researchers are discovering that some cognitive abilities don’t peak until later in life. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology last year measured mental abilities among executive job applicants across the age spectrum. Generally, older executives scored modestly lower than younger ones, with the largest drop-offs for subjects older than 60, which is why positions like air-traffic controllers have a mandatory retirement age of 56. Yet age has a positive correlation with higher crystallized intelligence, which measures experience-based knowledge such as verbal capability and emotional IQ. Widespread cognitive-ability tests used for narrowing candidate pools often don’t measure these attributes. ——— RADIO IS MORE POPULAR IN THE US THAN YOU THINK The common assumption in the tech world is that old media platforms are dying a slow death. As smart devices become more and more ubiquitous, the need for traditional platforms like linear cable TV seems to only lessen with each passing year. But while there’s no denying the changes new technologies have brought, it might be unwise to discount just how influential those older platforms remain. For instance, radio, not smartphones or PCs, reaches more Americans each week than any other media platform, according to a recent Nielsen report charted for us by Statista. Roughly 228 million adults in the US listened to some form of radio at least once a week in the fourth quarter of 2016, the report said. That’s good for 93% of the US adult population, and the figure is growing. TV had the second-farthest reach at 89%, followed by smartphones at 83%. The PC and tablet were well behind, at 50% and 37%, respectively. ——- OUR SMART PHONES ARE MAKING US DUMBER   Though our phones are getting smarter, new research suggests they’re actually making us dumber. A team of researchers at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin set out to test the “brain drain” hypothesis: the theory that simply having your smartphone near you could impact your available cognitive capacity. The study featured 800 participants who were required to take a test on a computer that required their undivided attention. The participants were divided into three groups that each received different instructions: one group was instructed to place their phones face down on the table next to the computer they were using, another was instructed to leave their phones nearby but out-of-sight, such as in a pocket or bag, and the third group was told to leave their phones in another room. Prior to the start of the test, all three groups were instructed to turn off all notifications on their phones. The researchers found that individuals who left their phones in the other room scored higher on a test than those who had their phones nearby, despite the latter group saying they had not been thinking about their phones. Participants in all three groups self-reported thoughts about their smartphones at the same frequency. The results suggest that the mere presence of one’s smartphone has a measurable impact on an individual’s available cognitive capacity, regardless of if they feel distracted or not. And so, next time you find yourself really needing to concentrate on something, it might be best to get as far away from your phone as you can. —— BUY OF THE WEEK – ACTION CAMERA LIKE A GOPRO We first shared news of a sweet sale on the FITFORT Waterproof 4K Action Camera a c...

Republican Healthcare Act 2017 for Seniors? Amazon Fashion! ATT Charges you to PROTECT YOU!
Republican Healthcare Act 2017 for Seniors? Amazon Fashion! ATT Charges you to PROTECT YOU! The Senate bill that guts the Affordable Care Act would increase the number of uninsured Americans by 22 million by 2026, according to the analysis of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released Monday. Fifteen million more people would be uninsured next year, and the total number of uninsured would swell to 49 million in a decade, the CBO found. Some of the worst effects of the bill, the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 (BCRA), would fall upon older, low-income individuals. This is the part that should concern older Americans. “The increase would be disproportionately larger among older people with lower income,” the 49-page CBO analysis said, “particularly people between 50 and 64 years old with income of less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level.” Right now Current law bars insurers from charging older adults more than three times as much for premiums as they charge younger people for the same coverage. The Senate bill would allow what AARP has called an Age Tax, allowing insurers to charge older adults five times as much, and states could receive waivers to charge them even more. The Senate bill also would diminish premium tax credits available under current law. The tax credits would decrease — or disappear entirely — as a person ages, thereby raising their premiums. “Premiums for older people ineligible for subsidies would be much higher under this legislation,” The Senate bill would cost older Americans much more for the same coverage they have now. Here it is. According to the CBO, in 2026 a 64-year-old with an income of $56,800 would pay $20,500 for a silver- level plan. Under current law, that same plan would cost the senior $6,800. Please, whether you pull R or D at the voting booth, call your representative and tell them NO. Now for our yak about tech. I’ve discussed privacy before on this show, but here is something you might find disconcerting. This one from Chris Smith at BGR. So a guy walks into your home and says“Nice internet privacy you’ve got there! It’d be a shame if something bad were to happen to it.” That’s the kind of line you’d expect in a mob movie from a thug looking for his weekly fee for protecting your privacy. In real life, AT&T can’t be quite so conspicuous, but that’s basically what the mobile carrier is considering doing, based on a recent interview with one of the executives on C-SPAN. In an interview on C-SPAN last week, AT&T Senior Vice President Robert Quinn suggested that AT&T might charge users in the future to protect their privacy. The company tried this scheme in the past, DSLReports explains, asking users in 2016 to fork over between $531 to $800 more per year to opt out of its Internet Preferences program. The move was heavily criticized at the time, and AT&T soon dropped it to prevent it from jeopardizing its Time Warner deal. However, AT&T is now reconsidering it. Yak About . Today “We got an enormous amount of criticism from privacy advocates when we rolled out, in Austin, Texas, an ad- supported Internet service […] Privacy advocates screamed about that,” Quinn said. He then added that AT&T might revisit a product similar to that, but sell it as an ad-based internet service that will give the user “more control” for a tax. “As the privacy revolution evolves, I think people are going to want more control, and maybe that’s the pricing model that’s ultimately what consumers want,” Quinn said. It’s unclear at this time what that means, and whether AT&T will indeed go forward with it. However, as DSLReports says,

Aging Doesn’t Always come Naturally. Classes are teaching boomers how. And Net Neutrality?
Aging Doesn’t Always come Naturally. Classes are teaching boomers how. by Fredrick Kunkle, washingtonpost.com May 29, 2015 There are classes now being developed around the country that are teaching the boomers how to age. Senior co-housing, and all its complications and rewards, was one of the bigger draws at what amounts to a college on how to age successfully. Its based on the fact that no-one is going to take care of you the way people will that know you. The four- to eight-week courses, presented by nonprofit organization Iona, were designed especially with baby boomers in mind. Since 2011, a generation that has almost continually reinvented itself also has been hitting retirement age. Net neutrality: Amazon among top internet firms planning day of action by Dominic Rushe in New York, theguardian.comJune 6, 2017 Exclusive: Etsy, Kickstarter and other leading companies to fight FCC plans to neuter 2015 rules in July protest backed by ACLU, Greenpeace and more Exclusive: Etsy, Kickstarter and other leading companies to fight FCC plans to neuter 2015 rules in July protest backed by ACLU, Greenpeace and more Some of the world’s largest internet companies are planning a day of action in defense of open internet rules now under attack by the Trump administration. Amazon, Etsy, Kickstarter, Mozilla, Etsy and Vimeo all intend to hold a day of protest on 12 July in opposition to plans by Donald Trump’s newly appointed telecoms regulator to neuter tough 2015 rules meant to protect “net neutrality” – the concept that all traffic should be equal online. Ajit Pai, new head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), pledged last year to take a “weed whacker” to rules that regulate the internet like any other utility like water or electricity, arguing they were too onerous on cable companies and stifled innovation. The potential rollback of the regulations has already sparked huge online protest and more organisations and companies are likely to join the day of action in the coming days. Evan Greer, campaign director of Fight for the Future, said: “The internet has given more people a voice than ever before, and we’re not going to let the FCC take that power away from us. Massive online mobilization got us the strong net neutrality protections that we have now, and we intend to fight tooth and nail to defend them.” *********************************************** ************************************************ Hosted by David Yakir and available on iHeartRadio, Yak About and Yak About Tech is your GPS guide to the baby boomer generation and the 4664’s ************************************************ For more info on the Marketing, Business and branding Podcast including: requesting a topic, recommending a guest, joining the show as a guest, sponsorship spots, advertising options as well as listening to older episodes and links to each shows supplemental materials, visit: http://yakabout.today ************************************************ For more on the David Yakir Group and David Yakir HOME – boomer agency, social media, content, conversation, marketing, creative agency

Lies you tell your Doctor; Virtual Reality is Real; Do you self medicate like a chimpanzee? That’s what we Yak About Today We’d heard that Major League Baseball had virtual reality streaming aspirations, and a partnership with Intel is making them a reality. The two have reached a three-year deal for the Intel True VR Game of the Week, a Tuesday broadcast (blacked out in local markets) that will live stream via Intel’s True VR app. Currently only available via the Oculus store for Samsung Gear VR headsets, it will give fans a look at the game via a fully produced VR broadcast, or the ability to hop around through different viewing locations — captured by 4K resolution cameras — with optional stat overlays. Airports are where hopes and dreams go to die. But JetBlue thinks that one method of how people typically pass the time could be used to speed up the boarding process. For some passengers, a taken-at-the-gate photo will suffice to get them to their sky-chair. It’s part of a collaboration between the airline and the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office, Jetblue announced today. “Customers who opt in during the boarding process can put away their boarding passes and devices and simply step up to the camera for a quick photo. The custom-designed camera station will connect to CBP to instantly match the image to passport, visa or immigration photos in the CBP database and verify flight details. ******************************** The Yak About broadcasts deliver on air and online conversations, interviews and stories engaging the Baby Boomer Generation and beyond with discussions, tips and information. What Health Screenings Do We Really Need? Phone Addiction? What is the World Wide Web?
What Health Screenings Do We Really Need? Phone Addiction? What is the World Wide Web?   History of the World Wide Web   The World Wide Web (WWW, W3) is an information system of interlinked hypertext documents that are accessed via the Internet. It has also commonly become known simply as the Web. Individual document pages on the World Wide Web are called web pages and are accessed with a software application running on the user’s computer, commonly called a web browser. Web pages may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia components, as well as web navigation features consisting of hyperlinks. Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist and former CERN employee, is considered the inventor of the Web. On 12 March 1989, Berners-Lee wrote a proposal for what would eventually become the World Wide Web. The 1989 proposal was meant for a more effective CERN communication system but Berners-Lee eventually realised the concept could be implemented throughout the world. Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed in 1990 to use hypertext “to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will”, and Berners-Lee finished the first website in December of that year. The first test was completed around 20 December 1990 and Berners-Lee reported about the project on the newsgroup alt.hypertext on 7 August 1991. On 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to anyone, with no fees due.

Apple wants its Apple Watch to be a must for Diabetics and is Poor Sleep Killing YOU! That’s what we Yak About . Today
Apple wants its Apple Watch to be a must for Diabetics and is Poor Sleep Killing YOU! And: Apple the eco-community friendly Business The next time you tell yourself that you’ll sleep when you’re dead, realize that you’re making a decision that can make that day come much sooner. Pushing late into the night is a health and productivity killer. the Division of Sleep Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, the short-term productivity gains from skipping sleep to work are quickly washed away by the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on your mood, ability to focus, and access to higher-level brain functions for days to come. The negative effects of sleep deprivation are so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep. For more info: Read on. # CNBC : Apple wants its watch to be essential for Diabetics     by Daniel Cooper, engadget.comApril 13, 2017 Apple is quietly developing a sensor that can monitor a person’s blood sugar levels continuously and non-invasively. If successful, the technology will be integrated into a future version of the Apple Watch to help people with diabetes manage their condition. the project was set up by Steve Jobs before his death. According to the report, Apple has quietly hired engineers to work in secret. It’s believed that the company has been so successful it is already running trials of the sensors at “clinical sites” in San Francisco’s Bay Area. In fact, progress has been so encouraging that Apple has already hired consultants to help it navigate the torturous process of getting FDA approval. There are a number of practical issues to overcome, including the fact that using optical sensors to read blood glucose is /hard/. The world is littered with companies that have tried — and failed — to use noninvasive monitoring for this particular issue. Right now, the only effective way to continuously monitor someone’s blood glucose level is with implants or other invasive tech. Continuous glucose monitors often use a stomach-based implant that connects with a transmitter that’s held on the outside of your stomach. Even new wearables like KTrack use tiny needles that burrow into the skin in order to work. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, there were 422 million people living with diabetes in 2014. That’s up from 108 million in 1980, a staggering increase for a disease that is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, stroke and heart attacks. In addition, the better part of four million deaths per year can be directly attributed to diabetes-related conditions. If Apple can, somehow, innovate where so many others have not, then it will make the number of people who have reason to purchase a Watch increase exponentially. #Yakabout/50117 # Apple’s new Danish data center will supply heat to nearby homes, fertilizer to farmers Apple’s commitment to [environmental sustainability](https://9to5mac.com/guides/environment/) is well established, but the company is going one step further in its new Danish data center. In addition to powering the center entirely from renewable energy, the company is capturing the waste heat generated and feeding it into a district heating system, to warm local homes … > The data center in the Jutland region will be partly powered by recycling waste products from farms. Apple is working with Aarhus University on a system that passes agricultural waste through a digester to generate methane, which is then used to help power the data center. The digester reaction turns some of the waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, which Apple returns to local farmers to use on their fields.

How Many Pills Are Too Many? How to Get Those Pills on the Cheap. And Oh Nuts! – That’s what we Yak About Today.
How Many Pills Are Too Many? How to Get Those Pills on the Cheap. And Oh Nuts! – That’s what we Yak About Today. By Scott Gelber Popping Pills The point of prescription drugs is to help us get or feel well. Yet Americans are taking so many medications that doctors are being encouraged to pause before prescribing and think about   as well. Yet an increasing number of Americans — typically older ones with multiple chronic conditions — are taking drugs and supplements they don’t need, or so many of them that those substances are [interacting] Though many prescription drugs are highly valuable, taking them can also be dangerous, particularly taking a lot of them at once. The vast majority of higher-quality studies summarized in [a systematic review] Listen to Yak About. Today for the complete story. Blink Health Blink Health scours the Internet to find out what people are actually paying for their prescriptions. Then, in the case of generic medications, Blink Health negotiates with the pharmacy to get a certain price.** Say you need to pick up a prescription for your medication, but you have a high deductible plan that requires you to pay $3,000 out of your own pocket before your insurance starts picking up the rest of the tab. Instead of going to the pharmacy and accepting whatever price they offer (which can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy), you could download the Blink Health app, or go to the company’s website. In the app, you can find your prescription and purchase it directly through the app. Then, when you get to the pharmacy counter, you show your phone to the pharmacist who rings it up instead. There are other prescription services that can show you different retail prices, such as GoodRx. One of the biggest differences between Blink Health and those sites are that instead of possibly having to choose a different pharmacy from the one you usually go to, Blink Health users can still go to their regular pharmacy, so long as it accepts Blink Health, which more than 57,000 do. Oh Nuts! But what /exactly/ are you getting from your afternoon snack of nuts? I’ve got a few nuts for you and I’ll tell you what they do We found all that important information in an easy-to-read infographic. It breaks down the health benefits found in some of the most popular snacking nuts. Check it out:

Is Cancer a matter of Bad Luck? Walk, Stretch or Dance? Which is Better for the Brain. We Yak About this and more.
Is Cancer a matter of Bad Luck? Walk, Stretch or Dance? Which is Better for the Brain. We Yak About this and more.   Without a cure in sight, cancer has become one of society’s biggest concerns. The fear of getting it is enough for many people to change their lifestyles in dramatic and meaningful ways, and even though it’s increasingly possible to beat the disease, it remains one of the biggest universal health worries. As it turns out, all that anxiety may be for nothing, as new research suggests that getting cancer is more about bad luck than lifestyle factors, though it’s still possible to lessen your overall chances. As it turns out, all that anxiety may be for nothing, as new research suggests that getting cancer is more about bad luck than lifestyle factors, though it’s still possible to lessen your overall chances. Usually Science has historically kept its distance when it comes to estimating the number of cancers that are caused by any particular factor, and what cases of the disease would have happened regardless of outside influence. Johns Hopkins University scientists published a new study in the journal Science that does exactly what researchers have avoided doing for ages, and the figures may come as a bit of a surprise. The team sought to pinpoint the cause of the genetic mutations that cause cancer, and determine what influenced the outcome. Shockingly, the data suggests that a full 66% of the mutations that eventually result in cancer are completely random errors in the DNA, with no direct cause. Environmental factors — like smoking, pollution, and all the other things we think of as being triggers for the disease — account for about 29% of cancers. The last 5% are thought to be inherited. The scientists explain that DNA mutations normally don’t occur in genes with cancer-causing ability, and therefor don’t have any negative consequences. When mutations randomly occur in certain genes, however, cancer may result, and most of the time it’s simply “bad luck.” Walk, Stretch or Dance? Dancing May Be Best for the Brain by GRETCHEN REYNOLDS, nytimes.com April 5, 2017 Could learning to dance the minuet or fandango help to protect our brains from aging? A new study that compared the neurological effects of country dancing with those of walking and other activities suggests that there may be something unique about learning a social dance. The demands it places on the mind and body could make it unusually potent at slowing some of the changes inside our skulls that seem otherwise inevitable with aging. Neuroscientists and those in middle age or beyond know that brains alter and slow as we grow older. Processing speed, which is a measure of how rapidly our brains can absorb, assess and respond to new information, seems to be particularly hard hit. Most people who are older than about 40 perform worse on tests of processing speed than those who are younger, with the effects accelerating as the decades pass. Scientists suspect that this decline is due in large part to a concomitant fraying of our brain’s white matter, which is its wiring. White matter consists of specialized cells and their offshoots that pass messages between neurons and from one part of the brain to another. In young brains, these messages whip from neuron to neuron with boggling speed. But in older people, brain scans show, the white matter can be skimpier and less efficient. Messages stutter and slow. Whether this age-related decline in white matter is inexorable, however, or might instead be changeable has been unclear. So for the new study, which was published this month in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, researchers from the University of Illinois in Urbana an...

Yak About Privacy! What was Congress Thinking?
Yak About Privacy! What was Congress Thinking? Trying to alert my mostly Republican audience in the 8th Congressional district on the nature of internet privacy and how their delegates they just elected voted to allow all ISP providers to sell and share any information they gather to the highest bidders. The following article should give you a sense of what you voted for.   Congress just gave ISPs the green light to sell your browsing history to strangers appy-geek.com March 28, 2017 04:23 PM In a vote today, House Republicans passed a bill that would undo FCC privacy rules surrounding how internet service providers can collect and use customers’ data. In essence, it gives a green light for ISPs like Comcast and Time Warner to collect all kinds of data from your internet browsing, analyze it, use it to target ads, or just sell it to the highest bidder. The vote today in Congress follows a similar vote last week in the Senate, and was the last major obstacle for the bill. The President still has to sign the bill, but the White House has already voiced strong support for removing the privacy rules. The bill strikes down privacy rules passed by the Federal Communications Commission, the government agency charged with regulating the telecoms industry, in October last year. Those rules would have prevented ISPs from collecting and selling customer data without explicit customer consent, in much the same way that Facebook and Google do currently. The difference is that your ISP is harder to avoid, and knows much more. Whereas you can easily enough avoid Google and Facebook and still be a full user of the internet, it’s much harder (thanks to the monopoly over internet service in large parts of this country) to avoid an ISP that wants to sell your data. The information that ISPs collect is also far more invasive. Your browsing data might not sound like much, but for many people, it’s an intimate snapshot of your financial, medical, relationship, and lifestyle information — details you probably don’t share with your closest friends, let alone an anonymous highest bidder. Internet providers, scrambling to enter the multi-billion-dollar world of online advertising, argue that the FCC regulations would have been unnecessarily intrusive and that existing privacy policies were enough. But thanks to the ISP’s classification as a “common carrier” (the same as airlines or railways), they are exempt from the Federal Trade Commission’s privacy rules, which apply to most other industries. Without privacy restrictions from either the FCC or FTC, ISPs are left basically promising that they’ll be good, with no teeth to enforce any standards. It’s not just your privacy you should be concerned with, either. The FTC privacy rules would also have governed the standards by which ISPs would have to store your data, and protect it from hacking. Given that leaks of customer information are near-daily affairs these days, rules that enforced strong encryption and careful storage would have gone a long way to protecting sensitive information from the wrong eyes. Sadly, customer privacy and data security aren’t good arguments in the face of multi-million-dollar campaign contributions from the telecoms industry.

Yak About Health Featuring “How to Talk to your Doctor” and Alexa Becomes a Virtual Doctor
Yak About Health Featuring “How to Talk to your Doctor” How To Talk To Your Doctor We thank We thank Amy Paturel, over at aarp.org If you’ve ever felt like your doctor isn’t listening to you, it may be true. Studies have found that doctors let patients speak for only 23 seconds on average before cutting them off; in one University of South Carolina study, primary care patients were interrupted just 12 seconds after the physician entered the exam room. When there’s less doctor-patient dialogue, patients are not only more likely to leave the office frustrated, but they’re also at greater risk of being misdiagnosed. WEVE GOT A FEW STRATEGIES YOU CAN TRY to maximize your office visit and talk so your doctor will listen. Make a human connection Neuendorf, M.D., medical director for the Center of Excellence in Health Care Communication at the Cleveland Clinic suggests. Before you dive into your concerns, break the ice with a greeting or even a joke. “Doctors are people first, and were much more receptive when a patient begins a conversation with a simple, ‘How’s your day going?’ Stay on message Most doctor visits last 13 to 16 minutes, according to Medscape’s 2016 “Physician Compensation Report,” so after your greeting, get to the point. “Oversharing information unrelated to your medical concerns takes time away from tailoring a treatment plan,” Neuendorf says. Tell the whole truth You can’t expect a doctor to listen to your complaints, or adequately resolve them, if you’re not forthright. Tell your doctor about your fear of falling, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction or changes in sleep patterns. *Rehearse OR WRITE IT DOWN before you go If you’re uncomfortable discussing embarrassing topics, write a script and rehearse it in front of a mirror. Use words like incontinent, bowel movements and diarrhea so that when you’re talking to the doctor, you’ll be more comfortable saying them aloud. Don’t accept ‘it’s just aging’ If you have a symptom that has come on suddenly, keeps you up at night or interferes with your daily life, be specific about the changes you’ve noticed. “For example, you could say, ‘I’ve always been on time for appointments, but lately I’m forgetting them entirely. Is there a test you can do to rule out a more serious cognitive issue?’ ” says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale Medical School. Don’t save questions for the end Minkin suggests. Once your doctor is halfway out the door, he or she is already thinking about the next patient. Instead, come with a list of concerns and address them within the first few minutes of your visit, Explain what you can afford Most doctors don’t have a clue about patients’ out-of-pocket costs. Some aren’t even sure which procedures, prescriptions and lab tests are covered by insurance or Medicare. “But that doesn’t mean they’re not willing to work with you to lower costs,” Neuendorf says. If you can’t afford a prescription, ask your doctor for an alternative, or ask him or her to help you prioritize your medications, so you know which ones you can skip and which ones are nonnegotiable. Have that end-of-life discussion Talk to your family about what you want done when you are n...
