Building Bridges

By Building Bridges

Building Bridges aims to create peer-to-peer conversations and shared learning experiences between Canadians and refugees. Inspired by the New York Times 36 questions that lead to love, our set of questions is intended to build connections between participants as well as our listeners. We hope to convey how we are all more alike than different.

This project has been developed solely in the participants' individual capacity as youth advocates and leaders, as part of the Youth Advocacy Network for Social Cohesion 2020 program, a partnership between UNHCR and Culturelink.

Here are a few of the myths we bust:

1. MYTH: Refugees are not our responsibility and Canada is overburdened by a refugee crisis.
FACT: Canada shares the global responsibility to provide refuge for those fleeing war and persecution.

2. MYTH: Refugees unfairly take jobs and opportunities from Canadians.
FACT: Refugees possess many talents, skills and competencies and help contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of the domestic economy.

3.MYTH: Refugees unfairly skip ahead of immigrants.
FACT: The number of refugees accommodated does not affect the ability of immigrants to enter Canada.

4.MYTH: Canada’s refugee system is filled with “bogus” refugee claimants who abuse the system.
FACT: Refugees legitimately come to Canada to escape violence and persecution. Those applying for refugee status in Canada are required to pass several layers of screening and approval.
