#31: Longevity, Reproductive Health, The Tech Age

Welcome to the first episode of season 4! I hope you enjoy the podcast's fresh new look as I kick off my 4th year. There's no better way to start this season than with a thought-provoking conversation with one of my closest friends, Carol Magalhaes! She is a Junior at Northwestern University who studies molecular biology, while researching ovarian aging at the Duncan lab. Prior to her current lab, Carol spent six months doing aging research at the legendary Church Lab in Harvard Medical School. She is interested in developing methods to increase female healthspan and reproductive longevity. Outside of research, Carol also co-founded the Nucleate Dojo House, a summer fellowship for young ambitious biotech undergraduates. We hope you enjoy this episode and feel free to contact Carol on Twitter for any followup conversations or catch one of her synthetic biology talks :D If you would like to provide feedback for the podcast and which directions it can go, please let me know @thestudentspotlight on Instagram or Twitter. See you in the next episode, Spotlights!

#9: Bad Grades, Pep Talks, No Regrets

Bad grades, we all get them as students so it makes sense to talk about them. Why? Because too many of us get bogged down by a subpar number and treat it as a taboo. But so what? We’re just students in the Game of Academia. So like every game, let’s come up with a game plan! I really hope that students, after this EP, will be open to discussing their academic “failures” and help create a non-judgemental ecosystem that makes education truly as fun as it actually is for all of us. Enjoy!

#5: Academic Empathy, Student Archetypes, The Supramarginal Gyrus

As you may or may not know, the entire world is currently under siege by a microscopic enemy, called the novel coronavirus, aka COVID-19. Virtually the entire world has been under quarantine and self-isolation to help do their part in saving the human species from extinction. It’s a tough time. For all of us. A lot of people are suffering and that pain takes a collective toll on the human race more than you’d think. But that being said, something more dangerous has reared its ugly head and that is racism, stereotyping, as well as systematic discrimination. With that social caveat in mind, the current world’s quarantine state has given us all a chance to self-introspect in this hectic time. And as you may or may not know, self-reflection and existential thought is my middle name so I thought I’d share my two cents in this episode. So, here’s some food for thought on something very important in this weird time in history and that is, empathy. So maybe settle down and get some tea and let’s start with a story to highlight EMPATHY!
