Pretty Thoughts

By Yasmine Adams

What's up, Pretty Thinkers? I'm Yasmine, and welcome to my podcast! Pretty Thoughts is a podcast centered around life. It's also a play on words—many of my thoughts aren't always "pretty." Here, emotions run wild. This is a space to have difficult, nuanced conversations. A space of self-expression and intentional vulnerability. Welcome to my mind! While I intend this to be a platform to get my thoughts and ideas across in a poetic way, this podcast is about imperfection and growth. Hopefully, you all enjoy the journey as much as I plan to, and remember, keep those thoughts pretty!

Anthropology's Racist! What's New?

Anthropology's Racist! What's New?

It's that time of year again when I upload and act like I have been here the entire time! In today's episode, I am joined by my classmate, Bella, to discuss the development of race and culture throughout anthropology's history. Not only do we discuss the key contributors to the development of the anthropology we know today, but we also discuss the voices on the margins and question why they were put there in the first place. Today's episode ends with us asking, "How do we decolonize anthropology?"

*I promise this is more entertaining than it sounds*

Why Can't My Hair Just Be...Hair?!

In this episode, I decided to rant about natural hair. I talk about how I have been feeling about my hair lately and comment on a "scandal" that recently plagued the Black community online and some of the conversations surrounding it.

We Learned Violence From You

We Learned Violence From You

Welcome to 2021! On Wednesday, we watched as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, an act of domestic terrorism. We watched as the rhetoric changed to make their actions more palatable, a privilege not given to the many BLM protests that happened over the summer. So, consider this an open letter to everyone who has finally grasped the meaning of empathy! In this episode, I talk about violent resistance and America's favorite teacher, white people!

This is What Performative Activism Gets Us

This is What Performative Activism Gets Us

I think the title of this episode speaks for itself. Rest in peace Breonna; you deserved more, and we failed you. Breonna, you were worth more, you deserved more, you needed more, and we failed you. This is what performative activism gets us, nothing. Breonna never had a chance, but that doesn’t make it hurt less. I am not safe here, Breonna was not safe here, black women are not safe here. My heart aches; I’m so sorry we failed you.

#SayHerName Part 2: Strong Isn’t A Compliment

#SayHerName Part 2: Strong Isn’t A Compliment

I had a hard time trying to decide if I wanted to upload this or not because it felt out of place with everything going on. However, I still felt some of the things said needed to be heard. With Toyin's birthday recently passing, Jacob Blake being shot in the back 7 times, and now Chadwick Boseman's passing, so many of us are drained even more than before. Displaying strength is probably the last thing on our minds at this point. regardless here is the second and final part to the #SayHerName mini-series. Before I officially get into the episode I talk about some of the recent events and their effect on me. Spoiler alert! I'm hurting, badly.

This Week’s Question: How are you caring for yourself?

This Week’s Quote: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and this is an act of political warfare.”

- Audre Lorde

#SayHerName Part 1: Black Women Aren't Protected

#SayHerName Part 1: Black Women Aren't Protected

In this week's episode, I bring you Part 1 on the #SayHerName "series" it's a two-parter. In Part 1 I speak about how unprotected black women feel and how intersectionality plays into it. This episode is mostly directed at black men because we want them to speak up for us more. In most cases, they have dropped the ball, and it's time to start holding them accountable for their actions, or their inability to act. There isn't a question or a quote this week, just names of some of the black women who haven't gotten their justice.

Rest In Power:

Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Aiyanna Jones, Natasha Mckenna, Michelle Cusseaux, Dominque “Rem’mie” Fells, Riah Milton, and Atatiana Jefferson.

Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

Hey everyone, this week's episode was coming sooner or later, but I talk about everything going on right now regarding black lives. Between police brutality, systemic racism, and COVID-19, black people are being attacked from all sides, and have been for a long time. Hug a black person, check up on your black friends,  sign a petition, go to a protest, donate. Do something, help the movement. We need it, change is happening, don't let the momentum die.  BLACK LIVES MATTER!

Today’s Question: What are you fighting for?

Accountability is(n't) Hard

Accountability is(n't) Hard

In this week's episode, I talk about accountability and what that looks like. Using the Doja Cat situation as an example, I talk about how I feel people don't take time to analyze and look at a situation before jumping to conclusions. By no means am I making excuses for her, but it's somewhat of a different take. We are all accountable for our actions, but that doesn't mean we can't hold each other accountable too. That also doesn't mean we can't make mistakes and learn from them.

Today’s Question: Does cancel culture actually hold people accountable?

Today’s Quote: “We are all responsible and accountable for what we do or say even if those behaviors occur in stressful times.” - Byron Pulsifer

I'm Tired

I'm Tired

I recorded this episode right around the time I found out about Ahmaud Arbery. This was only going to be a draft, and I had intended on re-recording it so that my thoughts were clearer, and nothing could be taken the wrong way. However, after having a few conversations with people close to me, I realized that it's important for you all to see this side of me as well. The side that is defeated, the tired side, the side that has no idea what to do. This episode is me saying everything I felt at that moment. This is how I feel about being black in America.

P.S. I apologize for the change in sound quality after the disclaimer, I did the best I could.

He Unfollowed Me?!

He Unfollowed Me?!

Hi everyone, I know that it has been a while since my last upload, and I would like to apologize for that. However, 2020 has been something. As I stated in my Instagram post, this week's episode isn't a true representation of everything on my mind at this point. I've had this episode for a while and am uploading it to get things going. Anyway, in this week's episode, I recount an experience I had a little over a month ago after someone unfollowed me, as the title suggests. I think we all have been in this predicament before when we think we're over someone and realize we aren't after they do something unexpected. So this one is for all of you who are tempted to text that ex, or are conflicted about a situation right now. Enjoy!

Today's Quote: “Bro or sis, it’s time to move on, they don’t care about you anymore, they aren’t checking on you anymore. They haven’t read your post, you haven’t crossed their mind, and as harsh as this may sound, they don’t want you in the way that you might still want them. It’s time to move on officially. It’s time to take care of you.” – Me

Today's Question: “Is there someone in your life that you’re claiming to be over, but aren’t? In what ways are you still allowing this person to have control over you? How are you taking the necessary steps towards forgetting them completely?”
