Ep 62 - 50 Years of Close to the Edge
Join us as we celebrate and discuss the 50-year-old Yes album Close to the Edge! Chime in with any memories of how you discovered the music on this album or saw them play any of the songs live! The album line-up consisted of Jon Anderson, Jon Anderson – lead vocals, Steve Howe – guitars, electric sitar, steel guitar, backing vocals, Chris Squire – bass, backing vocals, Rick Wakeman – keyboards, Bill Bruford – drums, percussion.  After recording this alum, Bill Bruford found the album particularly laborious to make, which culminated in his decision to quit the band after it was recorded, to join King Crimson. He said he would wit until they found his replacement for the tour, and Alan joined with just days to learn and rehearse the entire show. Bill would not play CTTE or “And You And I" until the ABWH tour in 1989 and never performed "Siberian Khatru.” Whether studio or live, this music is amazing and raised the bar for all things prog rock and is still known to most as the highest benchmark. BONUS: Drum Talk TV's Tribute to the Tributes: Total Mass Retain w/ Drummer Joe Cass
Here's another bonus episode from Drum Talk TV! Dan Shinder and Jason Gianni welcome drummer Joe Cass from Total Mass Retain, an awesome YES tribute band, on Tribute to the Tributes! What makes a great band? Well, they have to sound great, right? What makes a great tribute band? They have to sound great and sound as close to the real thing as possible, right? Dan and Jason introduce you to extraordinary tribute bands who absolutely NAIL IT! The takeaway? As a cover band, a lot can be learned from great tribute bands. Ever hear a cover band play songs from different bands, and they all sound like the same cover band, and none like the bands they are putting little effort into emulating? It’s not just about playing the math and putting the notes where they go, it’s the nuances of each musician that often get left behind. Don’t be that offender! Ep 44 - Billy Sherwood Interview
Billy Sherwood joined us May 18 for this Yesshift interview! We started off with little updates on recent stuff like RoSFest, Cruise to the Edge, and Arc of Life. But the majority of this amazing conversation is Billy taking us through his chronological journey in the world of Yes, touching upon bands he's been part of before and in between, and providing anecdotes of how he reacted to duties that were asked of him by Chris Squire and Yes at various points. An honest, open, and emotional story that is well worth hearing from start to finish.

Video viewable on Spotify. On this last Yesshift episode for the year, we get festive by talking about Christmas solo albums by Yes members. We begin by reviewing Rick Wakeman's Christmas Variations (2000) and Christmas Portraits (2019). The album cover of the former has, fittingly, had variations over the years. We also touch upon the "I Saw Three Ships" cover that Oliver Wakeman performed on with Jeff Scheetz, John Payne, Oliver Wakeman, Pete Coleman, Bob Catley, and Rodney Matthews. Then we talk about Chris Squire's Swiss Choir (2007), followed by Jon Anderson's 3 Ships (1985), including the 2007 bonus tracks. Ep 18 - Yessons Rapping and Remixing
On this episode, we peek at Yes-inspired projects within genres that are beyond what we tend to gravitate toward. Jon Anderson's son Damion Anderson released a rap single titled "Close to the Hype" in 1992, and Steve Howe's son Virgil Howe, who did some DJ sets and a couple other remix projects in his life, released the techno album Yes Remixes in 2003. We go over our impressions of both of these releases. Ep 17 - Review of Tony Kaye's End of Innocence
On this episode, we provide our overall thoughts on original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye's recently released solo album End of Innocence. An album 20 years in the making about the tragic events of 9/11 and the search for hope that followed, the album version has expanded to 77 minutes from its original 46-minute runtime back when it was a YouTube video posted 10 years ago. We talk about what our expectations were before listening to either version, what the music sounds a bit similar to, and what we think of the CD booklet. Also, you can check out Steven's track-by-track review of the album here: https://vocal.media/beat/tony-kaye-end-of-innocence-review You can follow our podcast series at https://anchor.fm/yesshift, which includes an audio version of this episode if you prefer not to look at us. Ep 16 - Tribute To Roger Newell
With the recent passing of bassist Roger Newell, we spend an episode talking about his work in the music world. After working with the band Rainbow Ffolly, he joined Rick Wakeman's English Rock Ensemble, performing on Rick's solo albums Journey to the Centre of the Earth, The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and No Earthly Connection. Following this, he joined a band called The Wildcats. We read tributes to Roger Newell that were posted by each of the aforementioned artists, talk about his use of the triple neck bass that became heavily associated with Chris Squire, and go over our impressions of Roger's work on Rick's solo albums. Ep 15 - Magnification 20 Years Later
The Yes album Magnification was originally released September 10, 2001 in the UK. What set this album apart from other Yes albums is that it featured a four-member lineup relying on an orchestra (conducted by Larry Groupé) in place of a keyboardist. To honor the 20th anniversary of this album, we discuss how we feel about it, talking about each track that is included, and go over the lasting impact of this album, which was for 10 years essentially the "last" Yes studio album until the release of Fly from Here in 2011, and remains the last Yes studio album to feature Jon Anderson. Ep 13 - Roger Dean Tribute
Hi, it’s Dan! We had a lot of fun on this episode exploring the vast catalog of Roger Dean’s work. I personally have been a fan since the early ‘70s. We talk about much more than just his work with Yes, and we read LOTS of comments from those who answered the question to our post: What are your top three works by Roger Dean? We will be publishing a video version of this so you can see all the artwork we discuss, but that may be about a week from this post (or more). Hi, it's Steven! Same sentiments, but much later than the '70s, as I wasn't around then. Still, Roger Dean (born August 31, 1944) is probably my favorite illustrator. And we knew that this episode would be a long one, but it's worth it! (And yes, we know there's a new Yes song called "Dare to Know," but we'll get to that in a different episode!) Ep 12 - A Trip Downes Memory Lane
Keyboardist Geoff Downes' birthday happened recently. So we decided to dedicate an episode to highlights from his career. But first, we touch upon the passing of Charlie Watts and read Alan White's tribute to The Rolling Stones drummer. Afterward, we talk about Geoffrey Mason's video of Downes performing "White Car" in 2015 and then touch upon Downes' work across different eras, including musical activities related to The Buggles, Yes, Asia, Greg Lake, Downes Braide Association, and even solo. Give this episode a listen, and you may find that there are albums you should check out! Ep 11 - Was Benoît David Erased From Yes?
On this episode, which we recorded earlier this summer, we ponder the question of whether or not Benoît David was erased from Yes. This was suggested when Fly from Here – Return Trip was released in 2018 with Trevor Horn recording over David's vocals, and it has also been pointed out that this version is the only one available on Spotify and Yes' official YouTube channel. As fans of both versions, we look at this question from different angles, thinking about the people who follow Yes and know the history, and also taking From a Page into account when thinking about David's contributions. Listen to us as we ponder the question and provide other examples of revisionism. Ep 10 - What If Yes West Went On Without Jon Anderson?
When Jon Anderson went off to do ABWH, Yes members Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White were left to ponder what to do next. They considered continuing as a quartet, and then considered replacing Anderson with Billy Sherwood, Steve Walsh, or Roger Hodgson. On this episode, we discuss what it might have been like had Yes West gone on without Anderson. Dan recalls when Alan told him about the touring plans with Supertramp before the whole Union thing came together, and we go over the tracks that Yes West worked on around that period, ending with each of us saying what we think the ideal track list for such an album would have been. Ep 9 - When Dylan Howe Toured with Yes
This past week saw the birthday of drummer Dylan Howe, son of Yes guitarist Steve Howe. So for this episode, we talk about Dylan's time playing with Yes on the 2017 Yestival tour! Dan recalls his thoughts on the Phoenix show he attended on that tour, and we even included a clip of "Yours Is No Disgrace" from that show and read a few comments about the video. There is also a little bit of Dylan Howe trivia that may surprise you. Plus, an email with a neat idea we want to try in the future! Ep 8 - The Keys to Yes
On August 3, 1968, Yes played their first gig at East Mersea Youth Camp. Since then, there have been many lineup changes, and the slot that has changed the most is the keyboardist slot. So what better day to release an episode about the many keyboard players? Listen to us talk about the various Yes keyboardists and their contributions that stand out to us! And be sure to let us know what you think of any of them! Ep 7 - Video Stars
40 years ago, on August 1, 1981, MTV launched with The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" (viewable here: https://youtu.be/PJtiPRDIqtI) To commemorate the occasion, we talk not only about the music videos for that song, but also other music videos by The Buggles as well as Yes music videos that probably aired on MTV. We even talk a bit about Asia, ABWH, and Trevor Rabin's "Something to Hold Onto" music video. But before all that, we touch upon the 49th anniversary of Alan White's first Yes gig (7/30/1972), comments about the song "Mystery Tour" which will be on The Quest, a very brief update on the Monkman situation (you may have already heard), and a Tom Brislin post with a clever Yes reference. Ep 6 - Jon Anderson Kicking It Old School
On this episode of Yesshift, we begin with a little bit of feedback regarding the first Yes album, which turned 52 on July 25! Then we focus on Jon Anderson's activities, talking about the upcoming re-release of his 1994 solo album Change We Must, last week's "Heart of the Sunrise" video that he did with Paul Green Rock Academy (found here: https://youtu.be/SPdy9VRHeAA), his upcoming tour with them, and some 2007/2008 performances of Yes songs he did with Paul Green School of Rock (playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zfytc_8IKE...)! (Note: During the episode, we thought Paul Green Rock Academy and Paul Green School of Rock were one and the same, but we later found out Paul Green's agreement with the School of Rock expired in 2013 and he later started his Rock Academy.) Yesterday, Francis Monkman's response to Yes fan Dan Roth regarding the similarities between "The Ice Bridge" and his own song "The Dawn of an Era" made the rounds. After responding to a listener's email, we discussed our thoughts about Monkman's response and the resolution to the whole situation. Ep 4 - Our Review of "The Ice Bridge"
A new Yes song titled "The Ice Bridge" dropped on Friday! On this episode of Yesshift, we talk about our initial reactions to the song, read quotes from the band members about the song, and read off a few fan reactions. After all that, we address the weirdness that has been pointed out regarding similarities to "The Dawn of an Era," which appeared on Francis Monkman's album Energism. We do not have a firm stance, but we go over the confusion and the info that is out there that may potentially shed a bit of light on what's going on. As we say, more info needs to come out to clear stuff up, and this is just our reporting of what's out there and our reactions to it all on Saturday.
