The Magic Serpent (1966) Review + Toy Pick-Ups!

Ninjas. Wizards. Giant Frogs. Yes, 1966's The Magic Serpent from Toei has them all - and a lot more! This film is said to have inspired George Lucas' Star Wars - and you actually can see why - but at the end up the day, it's just bonkers.

Aside from this fun romp of a film, Jake and Jay have a litany of fun pick-ups, including items from Bandai, Yamakichi, Marmit, Max Toy, and more! Oh yeah, Jay also gets a "collection-defining" item...tune in to see!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Review + Godzilla & Oscar Talk?

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Review + Godzilla & Oscar Talk?

Kurt Russell, Apple, and Godzilla are an unlikely trio - but can they work together to produce a compelling MonsterVerse entry? Jake and Jay go through their overall thoughts on the series - was it necessary? Did the kaiju deliver? Would they watch a second season?

In addition, the big news in G-dom is that Godzilla is up for an Oscar!!! It only took 70 years - but Toho's money-making monster has a chance to bring home the gold (and totally should!). But, was he snubbed for other major awards?

Jake has a few pickup and the duo go over some funky new releases and news from Anraku Ansaku, Titan Publishing, and Titanic Creations.

The Whale God (1962) Review + Super Festival 87 Reveals

The Whale God (1962) Review + Super Festival 87 Reveals

Happy 2024! Jake and Jay are back reviewing Daiei's 1962 film, THE WHALE GOD, which was brought to North America for the first time (this year, by the way!) by SRS Cinema. We all know that the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" is an expert on "killer animal" films - but where does this Kojiro Hongo and Takashi Shimura-led entry land on his spectrum: is it more Jaws? Or more Orca?

Also, M1, Marusan, and U.S.Toys were active at Super Festival 87 in Japan - what gems did they unveil to the sofubi-crazed collecting community?

And did Jake already knock off something from his Top 10 Wishlist? And did Jay have his best single pick-up of the 2023 right before the holidays?

Enjoy this episode of YHS on Monster Island!

In this installment of YHS on Monster Island, Jacob Walsh and Jay Key talk give their thoughts on the first three episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and if the more grounded approach that we saw in Godzilla (2014) is effective after so many of the subsequent issues went in a different direction? Which of the timelines has been most compelling? And what about those new kaiju?

However, beyond the media, fans in Japan are getting ready for Tsuburaya Con 2023 at the Tokyo Dome this weekend - and all of the heavy hitters in the world of vinyl toys and other kaiju goodies will be there. Jay showcases some of the most anticipated drops from the world of ultra kaiju!

After a long slumber, Gamera is back in the all-new Netflix anime series, GAMERA: REBIRTH. Our beloved hosts, Jacob Walsh and Jay Key, break down the series and grade some of the major components of the show - visuals/animation, kaiju design, characters, etc. It's more art than science - but the big question is: did they like it?

In addition to Rebirth, Jake and Jay both weigh in on the trailers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and (a bit belated) Godzilla: Minus One. Also, they highlight some recent and upcoming toy drops from Anraku Ansaku, Marusan, and X-Plus.

Have fun on the island!

The Ministry of Silly Kaiju Toys

The Ministry of Silly Kaiju Toys

In this episode of YHS on Monster Island, Jake and Jay highlight some of their favorite toys that would fall into the zany category, leaving us asking the same question over and over - "Why'd they make this?".

But it's not all silly toys, as our favorite tandem of tokusatsu talkers dish out some recent toy news from Marusan and Medicom/Anraku Ansaku, discuss Jake's budding author career, and debate if Mondo's SpaceGodzilla ("Trendy" variant) is worthy of "Kaiju Toy of the Year" consideration.

All this and a whole lot more on YHS on Monster Island!

The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous of LATITUDE ZERO: How Did This Film Flop? + Godzilla/Kaiju Toy News!

The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous of LATITUDE ZERO: How Did This Film Flop? + Godzilla/Kaiju Toy News!

Toho's "A" Team. Check. Two bonafide stars of film and television. Check. Trampolines. Super check. On paper, everything looks (blood) rock solid for 1969's US-Japan co-production of LATITUDE ZERO - but, it was definitely a paper tiger (errr...gryphon?)...because it was one of the studio's biggest flops. Our YHS on Monster Island hosts, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, share their thoughts on this unique entry from Toho's cinematic roster - and why it may not be remembered in the same manner as other tokusatsu films. Everything from Joseph Cotten's multiple costume changes to "The Joker" and his "Batmen" to the (in)famous gryphon kaiju that is, well, it's something - nothing is off limits for our duo of daikiaju devotees.

But wait! That's not all! The tandem also discusses a ton of toy news from Mondo and Max Toy Co. (among others), their own weekly pick-ups which include some great Godzilland finds and Jay's return to X-Plus, and Jake's recent viewing of The Black Demon (2023).

It's always a fun trip to YHS on Monster Island - your home for kaiju films, fandom, television, and toys!

Circuses Bad, Gorgo Good: A Review of Gorgo (1961) + Super Festival 85, Gamera: Rebirth News

What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a film about the greatest monster mama of them all?

This installment of YHS on Monster Island is jam-packed with kaiju goodness, including a full review of the 1961 British-Irish-American co-production, Gorgo. Jake and Jay discuss suit design, who is actually the real protagonist, and if this movie had the most powerful net in the history of cinema! On top of reviewing the "Big G" - okay, the other "Big G" - okay, the third "Big G", the duo talk pick-ups including some Harryhausen awesomeness and more BioGojis, Jay's recent obscure tokusatsu binge into the worlds of Fireman, Mirrorman, and Spectreman, why it's hard to rank Ultra Q episodes, a host of toy reveals from Super Festival 85 and the 6th Mandarake Creative Sofubi Rally, Gamera: Rebirth giving us a tentative release date and a teaser image of Zigra, animal rights, and the first (and only) edition of Gorgo Movie Posters from Around the World!

It's a wild and chaotic episode, no doubt...so enjoy!

Space Monster Wangwagmi: Should It Have Remained "Lost"?

Space Monster Wangwagmi: Should It Have Remained "Lost"?

YHS on Monster Island returns to review the recently acquired South Korean film, Space Monster Wangmagwi…and it’s a doozy! Not only do we get a creepy monster (and not in the horror film “creepy” way), we witness the kaiju genre’s first inner ear canal urination scene, terrible paper mâché monster feet, and the very best in retro sci-fi costuming! Can Jay’s compliment sandwich do enough to salvage Wangmagwi’s reputation or will Jake toss it back into the lost and (not) found drawer in the Korean film archive?

But it’s not just the review on this week’s episode, the duo goes over recently pick-ups ranging from Marmit to Marusan to Trendmasters - and includes a Top 10 Wishlist acquisition! Other quick hitters include Jay’s hatred for Gyaos, the greatness of Sinbad, and the struggle of making a top 10 episode list for Ultra Q.

It’s a fun one on the Island…so join us!

Godzilla: Final Wars - Ranking the Kaiju Designs

Godzilla: Final Wars - Ranking the Kaiju Designs

YHS on Monster Island returns and takes a look at the polarizing 2004 entry and finale of the Millennium series, Godzilla: Final Wars...and what better way to do that than have "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh reveal his Top 10 kaiju designs (or, more accurately, re-designs)? Our host minces no words as he discusses what went right, wrong...and very wrong...with the likes of Keizer Ghidorah, Anguirus, Monster X, and the entire Final Wars kaiju roster.

On top of reviewing the film, Jacob and Jay touch on some recent toy news from Marusan, Star Ace/X-Plus, and compare the upcoming wacky Hedorah releases from Medicom Toy x Akashic Records and Swimmy Design Lab. Jay also provides a recap of Toku Toy Town's weekend at Retro Expo and his run-in with a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer! Of course, it wouldn't be YHS on Monster Island without weekly pick-ups...and though it's a light week on that front, it doesn't stop our dynamic duo of daikaiju devotees from detouring on topics such as Jay's fear of Harryhausen collecting and Super Mario Bros. toys.

As always, please leave us a rating and review...and subscribe to the channel to get your latest on kaiju films, fandom, television, and toys!

12 INSANE Cancelled Godzilla Films...and How Would We Save Them?

What if the “Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh was the head honcho at Toho Studios and was tasked with bringing back the most insane and outlandish cancelled Godzilla film concepts…what would he do? Our duo of daikaiju devotees, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, return to bash the 1957 Toho sci-fi classic, The Mysterians, with a hatred not seen since War of the God Monsters. Maybe they just don't share that same love of primary colors, large underwear, and repetitive explosions? But, in an effort to save the episode, the tandem go through Jay's DesignerCon Top 10 and highlight the efforts from some of our favorites: Rocom Toys, Max Toy Co, Mondo, and many more.

But that's not all! They tackle recent kaiju collectibles news from Star Ace, Mezco, Medicom Toy, and others...plus, weekly pick-ups!

Go ahead and head on over the YHS on Monster Island...which also happens to be 3 kilometers!

Kamen At You: Jake Watches Kamen Rider (1971) + More Godzilla & Kaiju Goodness!

Kamen At You: Jake Watches Kamen Rider (1971) + More Godzilla & Kaiju Goodness!

Yes, we are the idiots that podcasted the night BEFORE Godzilla Day - so you don't get to hear us freak out over the BIG news or even a majority of the releases! But, fear not, we will be back to dive deep into all of the goings on around November 3rd during our next installment.

But what do we talk about then? How about Jake's introduction to Kamen Rider (1971) - his thoughts on human bats, scarves, Rider Kicks!, and cyborg babes in fishnet stockings! But no, that's not all - we discuss our anticipation for Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex and Godzilla Fest 3: Attack on Gigan, what we think may or may not happen on Godzilla Day (spoiler: we are idiots), recent Bandai Movie Monster Series news, Fantazzzy's latest release, and a flurry of weekly pick-ups that include a certain autographed egg that makes Jay a more complete human.

Go ahead and prep the Moonlight SY-3 and head on over to YHS on Monster Island!

Celebrating 50 Years of Daigoro vs. Goliath

Celebrating 50 Years of Daigoro vs. Goliath

It's not fair that Godzilla vs. Gigan gets ALL of the 50th anniversary love! There was another little Toho project that came out in 1972 - a co-production with Tsuburaya - that deserves some respect: Daigoro vs. Goliath! Okay, maybe deserving respect might be too much for this film - but hey, it...uh...exists. And "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and his co-conspirator, Jay Key, are here to discuss this oft forgotten kaiju gem. From monster-sized toilets to excessive alcohol consumption to domestic violence, it has everything one expects in a kids' movie! However, the most compelling thing about Daigoro vs. Goliath is what it COULD have been!

In addition to the film, Jake and Jay discuss Kurt Russell in the Monsterverse, weekly pick-ups, Shin Ultraman's international release news, and some new reveals by Marusan for the Godzilla Store.  Please leave a positive review wherever you choose to consume YHS on Monster Island!

G-Fest XXVII vs. San Diego Comic-Con 2022 (Plus, Wonderfest and Tokusatsu DNA Reveals!)

G-Fest XXVII vs. San Diego Comic-Con 2022 (Plus, Wonderfest and Tokusatsu DNA Reveals!)

It’s G-Fest versus San Diego Comic-Con. Monsters in the Midwest versus SoCal Kaiju. G-Fans versus sun tans. Our hosts discuss their recent trips to these beloved events and compare notes on all facets of the convention experience. “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh headed westward to try and tackle the biggest beast in the battle, the mecca of media news and the pinnacle of pop culture and celebrity – San Diego Comic-Con. He talks about his experience as press and thoughts on all of the huge news, reveals, and teases from Mondo, Super7, Mezco, Toho, and more. “The Mayor of Toku Toy Town” left the comforts of his soft vinyl home and ventured back to his old stomping grounds – Chicago – for a weekend of rubber suited madness! Jay enlightens us on his top moments from G-Fest – from the panels to the vendor hall, from meeting friends to meeting tokusatsu celebrities.  Both provide a nice glimpse into what each of these gatherings are like – warts and all!

But those weren’t the only two major events over the past few weeks…Tokusatsu DNA 2022 and Wonder Festival 2022 Summer both happened in Japan and produced a kaiju-sized quantity of new toy reveals from X-Plus, Sarujirushi, PassionTank, M1, U.S.TOYS, Marusan, and many more!
