Lifehacks On Relationships Series: Let's Talk Romantic Relationships!
This is the last episode of a this series on Lifehacks on Relationships: Family, Friends, and Romantic.
1. This is the final episode of this relationships series --whether we want to believe it or not, everything goes back to how we related to our caregivers as children. If you are just tuning in, go back and listen to that podcast here.
- Humans are wired for relationships and the foundation for any good relationship is connection. Connection is the magical warmth of being seen and heard, and it can feel incredibly vulnerable.
- We learn about relationships and connection from our earliest years of development, so our patterns of behavior in relationships directly correlate to how we experienced or understood connection as a child.
- We dive into how we experience our romantic relationships based on how we experienced our childhood with our first caretakers. I introduce you to the concepts of attachment theory along the way.
2. Click here to access the presentation as I mentioned in the podcast.
Click here to access the Writing Prompts for today's episode. These are where the work begins and can be tremendously helpful in self-awareness.
3. In the previous episode, I shared about the following:
- A podcast episode from Brene Brown's "Unlocking Us" where she and her sisters debrief on the book "The Love Prescription"--so good. (There are three parts to this series--I highly recommend listening to all!) Click here to listen!
- Here's details on the book "The Love Prescription" by John M. Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman, PhD.

The next three episodes I am sharing some Lifehacks on Relationships: Family, Friends, and Romantic.
1. This episode will kickstart this series as we dive into why I'm starting with "family" and not "romantic"--whether we want to believe it or not, everything goes back to how we related to our caregivers as children.

The next three weeks I am focusing on the three aspects of feeling good: Body, Mind, and Heart. This is all in preparation for the free Five Day Feel Good Challenge starting October 3 and sign-ups are open!
1. In this final Episode to wrap up the preview of the challenge, I'm talking about Feeling Good in the Heart!
- Heart is where all roads lead to how we practice feeling good, even when life doesn't.
- In conjunction with the body & the mind, the heart holds the key to understanding how situations/challenges activate us emotionally.
- Emotional health is often set aside when compared to mental and physical health. The truth is ALL THREE are EQUAL in their importance.

Let's Talk: Feeling Good in the Mind! (Get Ready for 5 Day Challenge!)
The next three weeks I am focusing on the three aspects of feeling good: Body, Mind, and Heart. This is all in preparation for the free Five Day Feel Good Challenge starting October 3 (Sign up opening up on September 28!)
1. This Episode I'm talking about Feeling Good in the Mind!
- The mind (brain) is deeply connected to our bodies.
- In conjunction with the body, it's first response to "perceived" danger is immediate & powerful
- The brain's design is one of survival & releases powerful, effective hormones and chemicals to help us do just that.
2. Links for the Feel Good Challenge will be out next week when I talk about Feeling Good in the Heart :)

Let's Talk: Feeling Good in the Body! (Get Ready for 5 Day Challenge!)
The next three weeks I am focusing on the three aspects of feeling good: Body, Mind, and Heart. This is all in preparation for the free Five Day Feel Good Challenge starting October 3 (Sign up opening up on September 16!)
1. This Episode I'm talking about Feeling Good in the Body!
- The body is a live antenna.
- In conjunction with the brain, it is the first to send up a red flag 🚩 when things get hard
- It will send out an army of powerful, effective hormones and chemicals to “save us”
- The problem is the body doesn’t always know when it’s safe again. So we have to help our bodies regulate and return to "homeostatis" (aka feeling good again!)
2. In this podcast, I mention a book titled, "Burnout" by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. They also were on Brene Brown's podcast back in 2020, and you can listen to that here. It's packed with insightful information. Here's a quote from the Brene's podcast link above:
"Burnout. We’re all experiencing it and we’re all desperate for a way through it. In this episode, I talk to Drs. Emily and Amelia Nagoski about what causes burnout, what it does to our bodies, and how we can move through the emotional exhaustion. This has been a game-changer for me and for my family!"

Let's Talk: How We Are All Grieving (Still...)
This episode was recorded in August 2020 right in the thick of the beginning months of the pandemic. It resonates still--even as we still are navigating how the world has changed since it began. Learning how to accept the rather nebulous nature of grief is challenging. What matters is being able to name and feel our emotions in the safe witness of another human being who is comfortable enough to be with us in our grief. What may be helpful is understanding:
1. Humans are hardwired to connect; when experiencing disconnection (for any reason--death, divorce, moving away, leaving a job, etc) from situations, environments, or people, we feel emotional pain. This emotional pain may be described in different ways.
2. Grief is not just regarding the death of someone we love. We can grieve the loss of a friendship or the end of a dream career. There are complex layers to grieving.
3. Loss is loss. It doesn't matter the intensity or how traumatic it was. If you feel it, it is valid.
4. Grief may present in a variety of different ways--anger, irritation, lack of energy, or anxiety. There is no "right way" to grieving. It is as unique as each of our fingerprints.
5. In this podcast, I mention David Kessler, a long-time colleague and co-author with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross of the book On Grief and Grieving about the five stages of grief. Mr. Kessler has written a new book on grief, adding a new stage--finding meaning--to the classic five stages of grief, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief.
6. Here's the podcast with Brene Brown talking with David Kessler. In addition, David has a brand new podcast, Finding Healing, that is packed with FANTASTIC information.
7. Here's all a link to a Feeling Wheel (I call it an "emotional wheel" in the podcast). Great tool to help "name" our emotions.

- As a recovering codependent, control is a BIG rock for me.
- Hopefully today's episode will help you understand your attachments to control--healthy & not so healthy.

Let's Talk: Hacking Happy
As an emotional and spiritual health coach, my passion is to help people unlock their feel good. Feel good isn't "happy all the time" utopia; instead, I create opportunities for you to find out what your unique "feel good" blueprint is and strategically work toward integrating it into your life. Life is GOING to happen--I help you be ready for it when it does. In this episode, we talk about how we can hack happy--by leveraging something that we all have--it's called "hedonic adaptation". It's how we get "used to things"--bad or good.
I heard this term from a great podcast by Dr. Laurie Santos, "The Happiness Lab". Definitely follow it--it's incredible! I also shared some great words from David Kessler, an author and grief research/educator, and he just started a podcast called "Healing".
There is alot to uncover in what comes up with that language. As Brene Brown has shared recently in her book, "Atlas of the Heart", words MATTER. Alot. 1. External cues are part of being relationship with other humans.
2. Some external cues are used to control you
3. Reframe external cues to honor your needs & emotional health
Bottom line is this: Learning to trust ourselves, instead of relying on external cues to tell us "what" or "how" we feel, is the real work.

Let's Talk Trying New Things
As an emotional and spiritual health coach, my passion is to help people unlock their feel good. Feel good isn't "happy all the time", utopia; instead, I create opportunities for you to find out what your unique "feel good" blueprint is and strategically work toward integrating it into your life. Life is GOING to happen--I can help you be ready for it without losing your feel good. In this episode, I take on the importance of trying new things--and a warning:
1. Trying new things is vulnerable--there WILL be roadblocks. Be prepared.
2. Recall your SUPERPOWER
3. Engage your inner REBEL
Bottom line is this: Trying new things can feel really HARD as adults. It can feel vulnerable and bring up all kinds of icky feelings--past rejection, shame, embarrassment, insecurity and the worst, comparisons! Still, trying new things is an important muscle to USE because it's where our magic lives (the unique thing you do that ONLY you can bring to the world) When tough days hit, it's 100% necessary to have a map out of the wilderness of our emotional pain. When we practice, we get better at accepting our emotions as they are which enables us to demystify what's impacting our "feel good".

Let's Talk Untangling Conflict
As an emotional and spiritual health coach, my passion is to help people unlock their feel good. Feel good isn't "happy all the time", utopia; instead, I create opportunities for you to find out what your unique "feel good" blueprint is and strategically work toward integrating it into your life. Life is GOING to happen--I can help you be ready for it without losing your feel good. In this episode, I take on CONFLICT--specifically UNTANGLING ourselves from it. Here's some key takeaways:
1. Conflict is. It is part of all relationships. At some point, we will experience disagreement with those we love. And we can get stuck and tangled up in the pain of conflict.
2. Humans are wired for connection. We long for and desire connection, but our earliest relationships with our caretakers (parents, guardians, etc) inform how we show up in our relationships. We learn early on that relationships can hurt (experiencing disconnection), so we adapt behaviorally(coping mechanisms) to STOP THE PAIN
3. We can re-learn new ways of being to understand that conflict isn't wrong or bad--it's often how we "do" conflict that impacts our relationships the most & how we approach our emotional pain. Once we understand the how we do conflict, it will help us self-regulate when conflict happens with those we love the most.
Bottom line is this: Conflict is. What matters is getting to the root of how we "do" conflict to transform it. When tough days hit, it's 100% necessary to have a map out of the wilderness of our emotional pain. When we practice, we get better at accepting our emotions as they are which enables us to demystify what's impacting our "feel good".

Let's Talk Relationships + The Importance of Connection
In this episode, I talk about relationships + the importance of connection. Here's some key takeaways:
1. Humans are wired for connection with other humans beings. We call that relationships.
2. Our earliest relationships with our caretakers (parents, guardians, etc) inform how we "do" relationships, behaviorally
3. We learn early on that relationships can hurt (experienced disconnection), so we adapt behaviorally to avoid/repress/deny (coping mechanisms)
Bottom line is this: We have a patterned way of being in our relationships. When tough days hit, it's 100% necessary to have a map out of the wilderness of our emotional pain. When we practice, we can become better at accepting our emotions as they are (and reality too!).

Let's Talk Owning Our Pain
In this episode, I tackle the tough topic of pain--specifically owning our pain. Even when someone else has hurt us, mistreated us, betrayed us, or abused us--our pain from those wounds is 100% ours to deal with. It is our responsibility to figure out what to do with our pain so we don't:
1. Feel stuck in our pain--while pain happily drives us off the proverbial cliff>>>>The Three C's (we didn't cause, we can't control it, and we can't change it)
2. Unconsciously pass it on to those we love the most through our behavior>>>>Coping Mechanisms are normal & how our body keeps us safe
3. Avoid, deny, repress our pain through coping mechanisms that no longer serve us>>>>We all heal differently but healing DOES happen
Bottom line is this: If we don't own our pain, our pain will own us. When tough days hit, it's 100% necessary to have a map out of the wilderness of our emotional pain. When we practice, we can become better at accepting our emotions as they are (and reality too!).

Let's Talk Three Ways To Feel Good Now
This podcast is all about learning to FEEL GOOD, even when life DOESN'T. My first live video back after a month away felt great (even though the audio isn't that great--sorry!). The topic today is 3 Ways to Feel Good Now. When tough days hit, it's nice to know the way through, right? Having a map makes all the difference--because we understand what we need to do. We feel more confident at mastering tough emotions.
1. Content--Click here to follow along with the presentation. Writing prompts help us get the murky, hazy emotions OUT of our head & ON paper. Recalling traumatic or high emotion situations, our brain literally shuts down the "words" part of our brain--so when we say, "I can't find the words." We really mean it! Read more at The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma (a favorite that transformed how I understood the brain's response to trauma & correlating my own experience with emotional/mental trauma)
2. Writing Prompts for this episode will help you begin to journey through what brings you joy and life, always with an eye on curiosity!

Let's Talk Owning Our Stories
This podcast is all about learning to FEEL GOOD, even when life DOESN'T. Today, we're going back into the vault again to December 2020, where we talked about "owning our stories".
A few things I mentioned in this episode definitely worth following up on:
1. Content--Writing prompts help us get the murky, hazy emotions OUT of our head & ON paper.
2. Writing Prompts for this episode will help you begin to inventory some of the stories that show up for you:
(20:26) A recent situation where I felt ashamed was...
(20:45) It reminds me of a time growing up when...
(21:33) Shame told me...
3. Shame's Kryptonite is the Light. When you say shame out loud, it cannot survive (paraphrase from Brene Brown).

Heather + Rev. Ivan Gonzalez: Clinical Therapy, Coaching, and Permission to Feel Good
This episode is one you won't want to miss so bookmark this for later, ok?!
I had the best time sitting down to have the best conversation about clinical therapy, coaching, and permission to feel good with my dear friend, Rev. Iván Gonzalez. Iván is a pastor in downtown Orlando and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in private practice in central Florida. Clinically, Iván specializes in working with men, addictions, spirituality, relationships, and multi-cultural expressions of healing. Iván has made it his life's work to walk alongside people and communities in order to co-create holistically transformative experiences, anchored in the truth that all people deserve to feel well.
Some of Ivan's feel good activities include playing anything Mario with his four year old, singing love ballads as a karaoke superstar, and convincing his wife to eat at Mexican restaurants as much as possible.
A few things I mentioned in this episode definitely worth following up on:
1. You can find Iván at the following social media platforms:
https://www.facebook.com/holisticounseling
https://www.instagram.com/holisticbilingualcounseling/
https://twitter.com/holisticcounse?lang=en
2. A few topics we discussed worth looking into:
Hayden Dawes--Truly a wonderful voice on accessing the permission we need to live life fully, compassionately, and abundantly
The 12 Steps--12 Step recovery work (AA, Al-Anon, etc.) is a powerful process that invites us all to pursue and discover healing for ourselves and our relationships
The Feeling Wheel--I referenced the Feeling Wheel again in this episode. It's a great tool to begin to explore emotional health and awareness to help you practice feeling good
3. And ya'll, SUPER exciting news. One of my favorite authors/storytellers/real deal people, Glennon Doyle, just dropped her first episode on her new podcast, "We Can Do Hard Things".

This podcast is all about learning to FEEL GOOD, even when life DOESN'T. Today, we're going back into the vault again to December 2020, where we talked about "changing narratives".
A few things I mentioned in this episode definitely worth following up on:
1. Maria Forleo--This lady truly embodies multi-passionate coaching. I love her book, Everything is Figureoutable.
2. Content--Here are the slides from today's presentation, including the writing prompts. Writing prompts help us get the murky, hazy emotions OUT of our head & ON paper. Let's Talk Identity
Hey ya'll! This podcast is all about learning to FEEL GOOD, even when life DOESN'T. Today, I'm going back in the vault from 2020, where we are talking about IDENTITY. In the midst of life's challenges and business of life, it's easy to become so immersed in what we do and whom we love that we lose ourselves in the process. When we are busy, it's easy to forget that we have needs, dreams, and wants for our own lives. Listen in!
