Ep. 36: The Universe Cleared My Plate - Melanie Frome

Ep. 36: The Universe Cleared My Plate - Melanie Frome

Melanie is a multitude of things! Her passions include movement, writing, speaking, and mentoring others on their journeys.

This multi-passionate career wasn’t her starting point, however. Melanie spent over 15 years climbing the corporate ladder. A few months after high school she entered the workforce as a young single mother. As part of a career program, she got an office job and was off and running. Along the way she attended night school to get her college degree.

Long hours at work, staying up late to study for her college courses, and being the best parent she could be were draining. At some point, Melanie believes she lost sight of not only who she was, but also who it was possible for her to be. There wasn’t a lot space for conversations or thoughts about what she “wanted”. Instead, each day was jam packed and left little room for contemplation.

Melanie believes that now, at age 41, she’s finally had the chance to pause and consider what she wants to be when she “grows up”. In a way, this was thrust upon her - she was working 40 hours a week at a corporate job, while also running a yoga studio on the side. She was struggling to make it all financially feasible, and then within a few months, she closed the yoga studio, which is also where she had been living, and unexpectedly lost her job.

She feels the universe cleared EVERYTHING off her plate and effectively helped her hit reset. With a clean slate, Melanie took a good long look around and started making changes.

This catapulted her into an international move and the space to finally complete her book, which was sitting with a publisher at the time of this recording and is now available on Amazon!

Even though these changes were difficult, Melanie has nothing but gratitude for the changes she experienced during this time. She was good at her job, but she’s glad she left. She feels that, like many humans, she was stuck in her routines and habits. The gift of actually contemplating (and then acting on) your desires is amazing! Melanie knows that if she hadn’t been let go by her job, it would have taken her much longer to ever leave.

What part of you feels “stuck” in a certain position or way of being? How can you start moving towards freedom today?

Who you are as so many layers, and Melanie hopes to help others discover (or rediscover) who they really are.

Ep. 35: The World's Worst Diabetes Mom - Guest Stacey Simms

Ep. 35: The World's Worst Diabetes Mom - Guest Stacey Simms

During this interview, Stacey shares openly about many of the stages in her own journey. These included raising a son with a chronic illness,  working her way into her dream career position, and ultimately leaving that role to protect her own health. You can learn about self-care, dealing with the pressure to be perfect, and navigating career change in this informative episode.

I appreciate her candor, her positive outlook, and the twists and turns her journey took!

[Quick Note: If you’re specifically interested in Type 1, Type 2, Type 1.5, or double diabetes (yes, these are all real!), you’ll want to tune in at minute 21 for Stacey’s quick PSA on diabetes diagnosis and types. Crazy interesting!]

Stacey Simms’ new book is called The World’s Worst Diabetes Mom. She has a podcast and blog that inform, educate, and connect families that have children with diabetes. Ultimately, she shares that connections are what she is most passionate about.

Why “world’s worst” as part of her book title?

Stacey has noticed that parenting in general comes with a HUGE amount of pressure — everything from what schools your kids get into, to what you pack in your kid’s lunch (and how it looks, of course). And when your child has a diabetic diagnosis, you’re measuring so many additional variables on a daily basis, which adds a whole other level of striving for perfection.

While in an internet “discussion” with a women who strongly disagreed with parenting choice she had made, Stacey fired back with “Well, I guess I’m the world’s worst diabetes mom!”. After the heat of the moment cooled, she realized there was something in that statement that resonated.

The philosophy she devised? Give up the fight for perfect parenting!

Stacey shares that her son’s diagnosis occurred in 2006. The iPhone didn’t exist, and Facebook was only for college students. There weren’t all these “voices” sharing tips and advice…or condemnation and criticism. Once social media became accessible, she appreciated the opportunities for getting new ideas, helpful tips, and the support of people who were in the journey with her was amazing. On the flip side…getting judged by strangers on the internet who disagreed with her choices and were quick to share all about it was a new struggle.

Stacey realized that pre-internet she didn’t know she was “supposed” to feel guilt about some of her parenting decisions, so she didn’t. She also realized that giving her son independence and some level of “normalcy” was really important to her.

During these early stages of being a parent and having a young child with a diabetes diagnosis, Stacey had her dream job. She absolutely LOVED it. She also realized that it was draining her, and wasn’t going to be sustainable in the long run. The straw that broke the camel’s back was her own diagnosis with ulcerative colitis.

Her solution? Ultimately, she left. Even though it was a hard decision, she absolutely new it was the right thing to do. While talking about the transition from her full time position, I really appreciated that Stacey acknowledges the privilege that allowed her to make these transition choices. Everyone’s journey looks different, and the choices available to every individual are going to be different.

To learn more about how Stacey navigates change and implements self-care, listen in to the full episode.

Ep. 30: The Self-Love Challenge - Guest Brandy Wilson

Ep. 30: The Self-Love Challenge - Guest Brandy Wilson

Brandy is practicing law full time as she grows her speaking & coaching business.

She attributes her own personal self-love journey to the discovery of her calling and passion, and is excited to empower other women in the same way.

I love her honesty as she shared about the reality of being in the beginning stages of leaving a stable career with solid benefits. (Especially when your education and life have all been geared towards achieving your current role!) If you’re wading through the transition yourself, you’ll appreciate her encouragement. You don’t need to have every step figured out, but you do need to create a plan and start taking action. Following your purpose and calling DOES pay off.

Nothing is a wasted experience, especially when it involved educating yourself. Don’t stress about the time, energy, or finances you put in to a certain degree program or certification. Everything you know can be applied, and it will serve you! Don’t hold yourself back from a pivot just because your new dreams don’t utilize your old degree.

If you’re not building your dream…you’re building someone else’s.

Brandy’s site and business is built around the concept of the “self-love challenge”. She believes that you can accept and love yourself even while you’re working on transforming into your best self. She attributes her own yoga experience, and it’s emphasis on slowing down and appreciating your full self, with the start of her growth. In addition, she was reading personal development and self-help books. As her mindset began to shift, she started actually implementing what she was learning.

The Self-Love Challenge was born as the culmination of all of these personal transformations! (And it started as a squat challenge!)

When you commit to loving yourself wherever you’re at, your self-love will only continue to grow.

Ep. 29: Do it Anyways - Guest Hailey Rowe

Ep. 29: Do it Anyways - Guest Hailey Rowe

Hailey is a business coach for coaches who want to book more clients and hit their first 5-10k months.

She is passionate about working with coaches who struggle with limiting mindsets, as well as addressing the thought patterns that are holding them back from living out their full potential. She also believes that many certification programs don’t always provide the business foundation necessary for success. Her own background in business development and marketing helped her when she kicked off her coaching business, and she loves to help other coaches develop systems and foundations as well.

Hailey left her own coaching business to pursue her dream job…and 8 months later was let go, along with her entire team. As she rebuilt her business, she recommitted to never giving up on having something of her own again.

Wondering about getting certified?

Hailey shares that it isn’t technically “required”, but advises that it can certainly be helpful and increase your own confidence. She cautions that you shouldn’t put every dime you have into the certificate portion however; remember to budget for actual business needs and development too! There’s more to becoming an actual coach than just getting certified as one.

It’s selfish to keep your message to yourself. People need that! Rather than getting caught up in your head and stressing about what people are thinking — show up!

Create a mission that is bigger than the mess-ups and mistakes. Stop trying to be perfect, and put your ideas out into the world! Get comfortable with B+ work that is actually in the world (that’s way better than A+ work that only exists in your brain).

If you’re trying to start building your confidence, Hailey believes in taking action. The more you do, the braver you get! If you’re at least 40% sure that you could get a positive result by giving something a try — then DO it! As an entrepreneur, you have to become decisive. Give yourself permission to go for it, and quit waiting for someone else to tell you you’re “allowed”.

Really hung up on a negative message? Ask yourself, “What else is true?” Look for all the evidence as to why you CAN succeed, you CAN be confident, you CAN move forward with courage. (She knows saying it is easier than doing it…but you have to do it if you want it to work!)

Hailey does NOT believe in balance! (Listen in to the interview to hear about her philosophy on this!)

My favorite advice - don’t wait! The best time to start building new habits and changing your life is NOW!

Ep. 28: Be Honest with Yourself - Guest Danielle Desir

Ep. 28: Be Honest with Yourself - Guest Danielle Desir

Danielle is the founder of The Thought Card, which is all about affording travel, paying off debt, and building wealth. Who doesn’t need a little help in one of those areas?

The focus of her site and podcast are all about sharing financial tips and tricks (plus real life examples and transparency) in order to help people make better decisions. She got her start by ripping off the Bandaid and sharing openly about her experience with debt, starting with student loans ($63,000…the struggle is real!). Rather than pretending them away, she opened up and found an audience who identified with the struggle.

Once she realized her actual student loan dollar amount, plus the per-day interest she was paying back, Danielle got motivated to pay her debt down and STOP the vicious cycle. A huge part of this? Learning to be honest with yourself.

Rather than burying your head in the sand, or trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing, Danielle recommends facing your reality and making the hard decisions. For her, that meant choosing to live with her mom instead of in a more fun (and spendy) downtown apartment. It wasn’t permanent, but it was a sacrifice that helped her make up huge ground with her debt repayment.

Another great idea - in the midst of debt payoff, think about what’s going to happen beyond the debt. Danielle wanted to become a home owner, so she paired a savings program along with her debt repayment goals. This helped her build on her short term goals, make huge headway on debt payoffs, AND be ready to start house hunting once her loans were paid off. That’s huge!

Don’t forget to celebrate your wins and notice your progress - it may feel like a slow journey, but you’re making progress every day!

Listen in to learn more Danielle, The Thought Card, and her great financial advice!

You can find Danielle on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Check out her book, an amazing Iceland travel guide.

Ep. 26: Motivation, Gratitude, Life - Guest Angelina Anzelone

Ep. 26: Motivation, Gratitude, Life - Guest Angelina Anzelone

Angelina’s passion is to help others grow as they work through struggles that they’re experiencing. Having experienced a great deal of pain in her own life, she’s filled with empathy and provides a listening ear to those who simply need to be heard.

Angelina has struggled with diagnosed anorexia and bulimia, and has had a long struggle with feeling inadequate and “less than”. She dealt with depression, which worsened after discovering she was both pregnant and miscarrying in the same day.

As she’s worked through her own hurts, pains, and losses, she’s been inspired to help others do the same.

She recognizes that unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as drinking excess alcohol, were hurting her. Once this sank in, she took action to start creating change within herself. Rather than focus solely on external factors, she dug deep and recognized the power she has to control her own thoughts and feelings.

I love what she shares about reading books by people she wanted to emulate, and trying out the practices they were implementing in their own life. She found that journaling and gratitude were powerful tools in her own life, and has continued to use them in ways that work in her own life.

Reminder: you shouldn’t have to force it. If someone’s practices don’t make sense for who you are as a person, move on!

Mindfulness and self-awareness are powerful ways Angelina makes sure she is putting her time and energy into using tools that empower and encourage her!

At the end of the day, she reminds us that we are responsible for our own happiness.

Don’t be afraid to take charge of your life and STOP stagnating!

Ep. 24: Mindset is Everything - Guest Justina Ford

Ep. 24: Mindset is Everything - Guest Justina Ford

Justina Ford, identifies herself as a Jesus lover, veteran spouse, and homeschool mom. She is also a Christian Energy Healer and Intuitive Business Coach who helps multi-passionate momprenuers clear limiting beliefs and walk fully in their calling to create.

On a practical level, that looks like helping these entrepreneurs with their brand message, structure of their services, and content creation.

Justina left a master’s program to follow her makeup industry passion, which paved the way for her entrance into coaching. She found that doing hair and makeup really provided her an inroad to connecting with women - she loved building their confidence and transforming them outwardly, but also saw the opportunity for more inner work and growth.

After becoming successful in the makeup industry, Justina started coaching women who specifically wanted to join the industry. It didn’t take long before she realized that what she was teaching would apply to many women and many fields. She started branching out and teaching on a wider scale.

The intuitive part of her coaching is a way of bringing in a deeper spiritual aspect, as well as to ensure that her clients aren’t just following the business or entrepreneurial path they think they are “supposed” to be on.

Justina believes in getting to the root of issues; rather than trying to slap a strategy on or try to push past issues, she encourages women to slow down and really deal with their internal struggles and the actual root of the issue. She uses energy clearing and EFT tapping, among other tools.

As her Christian faith is an important part of her life and work, Justina has worked through how she can incorporate various faith elements and healing elements in a way that feels authentic and holistic. If you’ve struggled with how your faith connects with your work, you’ll appreciate her thoughts here!

As a wife, mom, homeschooling teacher, and entrepreneurs, Justina shares that she chooses to put her faith and family ahead of her business. She’s never wanted to feel she has to prioritize work over the things she considers most important in life, especially now that she is her own boss. Having worked in the public sector, she understands the guilt and shame that can come from having to prioritize family over coworkers and job duties. She did not want to go back to that!

Her final advice? Your thoughts can lead you to either success or failure. Mindset really is everything!

During the interview, Justina suggests checking out www.splankna.com. You can also find her on Facebook.

Ep. 23: No More Mind Chatter - Guest Julie Shapiro

Ep. 23: No More Mind Chatter - Guest Julie Shapiro

Julie is an amazing, certified yoga teacher and mother of two. She got her start in the brick and mortar world of gyms, and slowly transitioned to the online world of training and teaching.

She enjoys yoga (of course!), as well as tennis and reading.

Julie has experienced anxiety, weight loss, and mindset shifts on her journey. She shares that in her life, anxiety and weight have gone hand in hand. Ever since her early teens, Julie has dealt with anxiety. She explains that it felt like a light switch flipped and everything was suddenly “heightened”. This feels like such an accurate description to me!

It took years to piece together the connection between eating, anxiety, and everything else going on. Julie attributes therapy, mediation, and yoga as having had a huge healing effect in her life.

In fact, it was after her first yoga class that she finally experienced a quiet mind - no more mind chatter!

It was as if the elephant on her chest was gone, and she experienced the first taste of what it could be to have her anxiety lift.
This is also when she started to see her true self, with so much less negativity and judgment.

Although yoga was initially something she pursue primarily for physical fitness, it didn’t take long for her to realize that yoga was about so much more than just exertion. The feeling she had after completing an aerobic class was really different than the feeling she had after completing a yoga class.

As an entrepreneur, Julie shares a bit about her journey with undercharging and over-giving, as well as the burn out that results from that.

Learning to value her skills, education, and talent allowed her to begin charging in a way that honored both herself and her clients. She reminds us to value ourselves and our gifts - balance is vital when it comes to business and life!

Another note: self-care doesn’t have to be about hours in the spa. Waking up and doing 5 minutes of yoga, or taking some deep breaths and setting an intention for your day, can be powerful acts of self-care too. If you feel like you’re constantly running on a treadmill -- try slowing down. You can choose to do that!

Hit the slow down button, recenter yourself, and give yourself some space to breathe and check in. It only takes a few glimpses to realize that you NEED those moments for yourself.

Share also shares that the more she uses her strengths and gets to know who she is, the closer the gets to who she really is. I love the idea of moving TOWARDS yourself on your journey to growth, rather than trying to reinvent a bigger, better version of yourself. Instead of escaping yourself, you’re becoming yourself. It’s a beautiful thing!

FUN THING: Julie is providing a guided meditation and worksheet for a course I’ll be launching next month, called In The Midst! If you enjoy writing, want to tap into your story, and think Julie is pretty amazing — come check it out!

Ep. 22: Rewrite Your Story - Guest Molika Gupta

Ep. 22: Rewrite Your Story - Guest Molika Gupta

Molika shares about her journey from India to Chicago as an immigrant and spouse.

She considers the process to have been a journey of leaving behind the old and walking into the new, which she describes as a transformation.

After her marriage, she left a thriving career as a patent licensing associate in India to accompany her husband to the US. Once here, she gained her second masters degree and re-entered the field of patenting. In addition, she started a support group specifically for immigrant spouses.

The support group came about as Molika was writing a memoir. She found she kept meeting other immigrant spouses, and she wanted to find a way to serve them. In the course of considering how she could stay connected with and support these women, she asked herself:

  • How can I do something bigger than me?
  • How can I leave a legacy?

As a result, her online group was born!

She addresses feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and more - all of which she says are quite common ways for accompanying spouses to feel. Due to visa constraints (or even just feelings of failure), many spouses find themselves unable to work in their previous career fields. Living in the shadow of their pasts with no clear picture of the future, it can become overwhelming to create a new path.

Immigration opens up new worlds...but it can also shatter confidence and self-concepts.

Immigrants should see themselves as brave warriors, heroes exploring new frontiers. Too often, however, they shrink back out of worry and fear. Molika encourages these women to use their immigration as a catalyst for growth and transformation.

Molika has started incorporating gratitude, affirmations, and journaling into her daily life. She reports that even these small practices can lead to great changes in your daily life and future.

She urges us to remember the humanity of everyone, and to respond to one another with empathy and compassion.

You can find Molika's Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/ImmigrantSpousesRewriteYourStory/

Ep. 20: Courageous Living - Guest Heather Brizzi

Ep. 20: Courageous Living - Guest Heather Brizzi

Heather shares that when things get crazy, she often has a desire to control things (don’t we all!). Like many of us, she’s worked to end those patterns of control in her life.

Part of Heather’s journey involved the inward process of moving from a victim mindset towards a courageous, empowered mindset. She dealt with a lot of anger and impulsivity as a young child, and felt she was “set apart” in a negative way. As a result, she walked around with a chip on her shoulder, carrying a burden of angst and frustration with her.

Rejection, abandonment, ridicule, and pain felt normal.

Transformation came in a variety of ways - joining the Navy, breaking free from the constraints of other people’s expectations, and having the the freedom of a new identity all helped.

They also created a new issue: striving. Heather might have been able to drop the chip, but ended up picking up the need to prove her worth to others

Eventually, she’s processed through that too. Life is always a journey, and not all of her growth as been achieved gracefully. Peeling through layers of hurt, pain, and past issues took time and effort. Being willing to face into what had been and choosing to work forward through those issues was instrumental in resolving and redeeming the past. It also required her to engage with other’s in her life, sharing her story and also learning more about their own perspectives and roles.

She identifies her ability to start TALKINg as something hugely essential in her journey. Processing through things and shedding light on them was so important, as opposed to hiding in the shadows or silencing her voice.

As emotional beings, we sometimes struggle to move from our current reality into something new or different. By choosing to live courageously, we can start to experience more freedom in our lives.

Rather than finding ways to blame others for our pain or pasts, there are ways to reenter the experience, settle what you can settle, and move on to healing and wholeness.

Remember - you’re not alone in this!

You can find Heather on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and on her website.

Ep. 19: Self-Care NOW - Guest Karen Salinas

Ep. 19: Self-Care NOW - Guest Karen Salinas

Karen is a National Board Certified Health Coach and founder of Rebalanced Wellbeing, where she works with busy women who risk chronic health conditions by putting their own needs last.

She believes we all deserve to have time and energy to dedicate towards our own needs, passions, and desires.

The big idea? You can have a family and career without sacrificing your own wellbeing and health.

If you know what it’s like to just push through, make it happen, and not provide self-care, then this is for you!

Karen calls herself a “thriver of divorce”, is a mom and step-mom, and is also a survivor of Lyme disease. Stress, fatigue, and overwhelm are no strangers in her life!

Part of her journey involves the realization that she was doing everything for everyone, and that she wasn’t good at asking for help. She came to see that serving her family was how she showed her love, but that it had turned into an unhealthy situation because she couldn’t show herself love or care when she was doing so much for everyone else.

Karen shares that she seeks to find a balance between mental, physical, and emotional energy. Her mental energy tends to be highest, and is a tremendous asset, while her physical energy needs the most TLC to stay charged up. She advocates for self-awareness, and recommends honoring your need to stop, to rest, and to communicate with your family and loved ones about tuning in to your own body and being honest about your limitations.

Asking for help is necessary, and trusting that it will be provided help you truly rest.

It’s okay to realize that you’re doing the best you can, and you can allow that to be enough. It may not be what you imagined, it may not be what you expected, but if it’s your best - it is enough.

You can find Karen at her website, rebalancewellbeing.com.

Ep. 18: Toxic Positivity - Guest Madeline Adamson

Ep. 18: Toxic Positivity - Guest Madeline Adamson

Madeline is an amazing Virtual Assistant who primarily works with spiritual coaches. She manages social media, writes content, creates graphics, and is all around incredible.

She shares how she’s always been interested in the power of our thoughts, specifically positive thoughts! Her parents gave her a copy of The Secret in high school, and she dove right in!

Looking back, she realizes that had a bit of a misunderstanding - she had felt she needed to use positive thinking to cover over “bad” situations or circumstances - when in reality, she’s come to find that any circumstance is neutral in and of itself, while her own responses and reactions are really up to her.

Madeline explains that toxic positivity is when you ignore reality and put a “happy face” on everything. I resonate so much! I think I’ve created a plethora of issues for myself in the past by faking positivity and then feeling that I had to protect what was, essentially, a lie. Having a positive mindset is NOT meant to be a band aid solution that sinks you into denial and deception.

She suggests looking for cues in your thinking. When you experience an emotion, you can start by NAMING that emotion. Just noticing, naming, and speaking over what you feel can help you start to interact with yourself in a healthier manner.

Be honest, and allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling.

Once you’ve named it and felt it, you can ask yourself what stories you have about the situation or feeling.

The reality is, there are stories who serve us and stories who don’t. Nothing to feel guilty about, nothing to label as good/bad, positive/negative. You’ll experience all sorts of things, and the way you choose to process them and weave them into your narrative will change the way you live your life.

Another way to release some of the stress around this topic? Understand that you are human, and you should be experiencing ALL the things life has to offer. So feeling sad, angry, upset, disappointed - those aren’t signs that you’re failing or “less than”. They are signs that everything is perfectly normal. You don’t need to pretend they don’t exist, or put a “happy face” on any of it!

This interview was so fun, and I’m not doing it justice here - be sure to listen in!

Ep. 17: Cooking for One - Guest Rebecca Clyde

Ep. 17: Cooking for One - Guest Rebecca Clyde

Rebecca is a dietician joining us from Salt Lake, Utah. She is a podcast host, and also curates a blog all about Cooking for One!

She shares about the chance conversation she had with a convenience store clerk that put her on to the field of dietetics, and a bit about the journey she’s taken to get to where she is now.

Her thesis was on body image, and I loved her thoughts on how our preoccupation with body image and appearance can take over our head space and zap our energy and confidence. Even when you get to a point of personally loving your body, there are so many messages from society that bombard you with other messaging - sadly, our modern lives are not always that conducive to maintaining self-love and body confidence!

Sometimes even the medical system creates insecurities and doubts about your own body. Our perceptions of ourselves, our weight, and our health can be so difficult to sort through, and one-size-fits-all answers (which Western medicine tends to prefer) don’t always fit us very well. As someone with PCOS, I definitely resonate with this!

Also: ideal body weight? That’s based off a terrible measurement system that doesn’t really take your actually body into account either. The problem seems to be systemic, and the system needs to change!

(The book I recommended was Physical Disobedience, and you can find it here: https://amzn.to/31m1E2Z.The dietician Rebecca mentioned is Julie Duffy Dillon - you can find a really neat interview she recently did with my friend Caitlin here.)

Rebecca’s podcast is called Cooking for One, and she shares that cooking for yourself is something small, but profound, that you can provide self-care and nurturing for yourself. My favorite tip? Make it fun!

She talks about how you can make cooking for yourself an experience - play your favorite music, find a new podcast, enjoy some wine, experiment with new flavors or textures, light candles - make it something you look forward to. I realized that one of my favorite years in my “food life” was the year I lived alone in my own apartment. I was able to eat so intuitively - everything from what I ate, when I ate, and how often I ate was based on my own needs and desires. It was kind of amazing!

Ep. 16: This is MY Moment - Guest Cristina Frosello

Ep. 16: This is MY Moment - Guest Cristina Frosello

Cristina brings so much energy to this interview!

She shares about her “now or never” chance to commit to becoming an entrepreneur, and the opening of a new book in her life (not a new chapter...a whole new book!). As someone transitioning from a corporate career, Cristina knows what it’s like to go from the stability and expectations of a traditional job to the freedom and responsibility of running your own business.

She talks about the necessary commitment to your journey, as well as the balance tha

One of her tips: sit down once a week (she uses Sunday) and plan out your next week. I love the visual of using Post-It notes to help yourself visualize where your time is going.

“Your mindset is the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur.”

When you’re an entrepreneur, you need to be extremely clear with yourself about you’re trying to achieve. The results you want to achieve are going to be your guide - once you know what you want, you need to determine HOW it’s going to happen.

The key to actually implementing your how and claiming your what?

MINDSET!

Working with a coach to improve your mindset and develop your business goals is a little like having a personal trainer. They’ll push you to your limits, encourage you, and keep you accountable for showing up and making it happen!

Cristina shares she is NOT a “victim of second guessing” - she is willing to just JUMP! As someone who does tend to struggle with that myself, I find that my strategy has been to make decisions and move on. Don’t obsess, don’t circle back, just make the decision and move forward to the next thing. In other words - trusting myself to take imperfect action.

Finally, Cristina reminds us to celebrate our successes! By noticing your achievements and having a mindset of continual encouragement towards yourself, you can create confidence and build excitement about continuing to achieve your goals. (I loved her version of self talk when she says, “Oh look at you!” and names her accomplishments.)

Not every moment is forever.

Don’t be too hard on yourself, and celebrate everything you’re doing because it’s getting you somewhere!

Ep. 15: Growth Mindset - Guest Barbara Mascareno

Ep. 15: Growth Mindset - Guest Barbara Mascareno

Barbara transitioned from a career as a scientist into a career as a teacher after seeing the academic language needs of English Language Learners.

We talk about growth mindset, perseverance, and the need to stay open to learning new things, even when it’s hard. Barbara’s ideas about accommodating student needs in order to enable them to be successful are applicable to anyone - we’ve all known what it’s like to be overwhelmed by something that feels difficult, “too hard”, or beyond our reach.

Breaking difficult work into chunks, and working towards goals one step at at time, enable students (or anyone!) to work towards what they want to achieve in a manageable way.

You probably can’t run a marathon tomorrow...but if you started by running a mile today and training every day for the next year...you could do it! Succeeding in school, business, or life is the same thing.

Whatever you WANT to be able to achieve - stop telling yourself that you can’t and figure out something that you CAN do right now, today, to start moving towards what you want.

Time, organization, and planning are essential to the process!

Set aside the time you need to make an initial plan, and then schedule in time you’ll need to actually pursue your plan, one small step at a time.

Get organized by determining what tools you need, who you need to connect with, and what kind of scheduling barriers might come up. Order any resources you may need, or apply to a training or educational program.

Plan to succeed - when will you work on your goal, why does your goal to matter to you, how will you know you’ve achieved your goal?

Also - you are much more likely to passionately pursue your goal (even when the initial fun wears off!) if you actually CARE about your goals. If you aren’t personally invested, you’re not going to be able to stick with it yourself!

Ep. 14: Life on Your Terms - Guest Margarita Price

Ep. 14: Life on Your Terms - Guest Margarita Price

“We were not put on this earth to just exist and do what we are told to do.”

Today I was joined by Margarita Price, a Life and Career Change coach who is dedicated to helping women live life on their own terms.

We discussed signs that you’re ready for change, as well as some of the stress that can come from choosing to break the mold and do things differently than your family or friends. Margarita suggests taking an honest look at your life and answering this question:

If my life looks this way in 5 years, will I be satisfied?

If the answer is no, start taking steps to change it!

Speaking of taking steps...it’s not enough to be dissatisfied and envision living some sort of “different” life. If all you do is think about (or mentally plan for how amazing it could be), you’ll never realize it! You absolutely have to start taking action. Margarita suggests planning for (and then TAKING) small steps that can fit into your current life. You don’t have to suddenly dedicate 5 hours a day - we’re all busy, and that isn’t realistic. You do have to DO something though; action is what makes change real.

Stuck on exactly WHAT actions to take?

Margarita starts her clients with exercises to determine core beliefs and values. Once you know what your values are, you can make decisions from a place of confidence in who you are and what you are all about.

Ep. 13: Full Time Remote - Guest Carly Merryweather

Ep. 13: Full Time Remote - Guest Carly Merryweather

Carly joined us today to share about her journey of becoming a VA and going fully remote. As a fellow member of the Laptop Freedom Program, Carly shares how her own self-confidence and belief in herself have been transformed in the last year.

She had been working two minimum wage jobs and didn’t see her dreams (starting a blog and launching her own YouTube channel) as being attainable. And when we have limiting beliefs about ourselves and our abilities, it’s so easy to slip into the trap of just doing what we see everyone else doing.

An encounter with her uncle made her realize she had nothing she was really working towards. His encouragement to make a plan (and be flexible about the idea that things can always change), really got Carly thinking about what she was moving towards. Since then, she invested in the Laptop Freedom Program, moved to a new house, started a temporary part time job, and is about to go full time as a remote VA!

She credits support from both her fiancee and the group of women from the Laptop Freedom Program as being the reasons she was able to step out, take a leap of faith, and begin the first steps towards whole new realities.

As exciting as working for yourself from home can be, we also discuss its inherent challenges: staying motivated, not getting sucked into the black hole of the internet, and prioritizing “billable hours” over all the other stuff we can so easily get distracted by. Carly shares that getting up early, getting dressed and ready for the day, and getting a solid chunk of work done in the morning helps her make progress and stay on track with her online clients.

Join us to learn more about the power of investing in yourself, believing in your dreams, and taking action steps towards actually achieving them.

Ep. 12: Personal Empowerment - Guest Stacey Andon

Ep. 12: Personal Empowerment - Guest Stacey Andon

Stacey shares about living in a state of victimhood, where everything that happened was being done “to” her, and she had no control. This included her personal finances, her health, her deteriorating marriage, and her work; it left her feeling frustrated and disempowered.

After being assigned the book Loving What Is (by Byron Katie), she realized that she had so much more agency and power in her own life than she had ever realized! As a result, she started asking herself these two questions:

  • “How’s that working for me?”
  • “What else could be true?”

By genuinely reflecting on the answers to these questions, she finds that there are often pathways that she hadn’t noticed or been aware of when initially facing the issue or problem. In that same vein, she realized that a lot of her initial thoughts and reactions weren’t coming from any inward process, but were actually external - maybe the pressure of what everyone else wanted, or even just the understanding of what you’re “supposed” to think, do, or feel.

If she had to offer a single piece of advice, it would be this:

To thine own self be true.

You CAN do the uncomfortable things, no matter how hard they seem, because choosing to summon the bravery and courage to be true to yourself will change everything.

Ep. 11: Do It Afraid - Guest Belle Jenings

Ep. 11: Do It Afraid - Guest Belle Jenings

Belle Jenings is a Mindset coach and the leader of Rise Into Purpose: A Program for Finding and Achieving Your Entrepreneurial Calling. She does all this while being a digital nomad, and has already enjoyed three countries in 2019 (with more in the works!).

She joined me on the podcast to discuss what it means to invest in yourself with joy, which she connects to self-worth and our ability to truly love ourselves.

We both found that some of the earliest investments we made in ourselves were massage and counseling - those smaller monthly costs opened the door to understanding that money spent on self-care and mental health are positive, worthwhile investments, and likely made it easier to embrace spending much larger amounts of money for coaching and support for our businesses down the road.

Belle also shares about making the mental shift from “It’s possible” to “I’m going to make my dreams come true”. She wrote:

“I would get so hung up on practicalities and the “normal” heights that others had reached, and I would limit my visions to that. How in the world could I expect to live a fabulous life if I wasn’t a lawyer or banker, or stunningly beautiful, or born with a trust fund? I didn’t see how that was possible, until I started to see that others were doing it. Others are literally making livings by traveling the world, in a van, with their rescue dogs.

As soon as I saw just a few examples of that, I started thinking “Why not me?” I started dreaming without limits--other than gravity and physics and such. I asked myself “What do I want my life to look like? How do I want to live?” and then started figuring out what would fit within that dream in terms of hours, independence, values, freedom, and opportunity. And that’s how I pieced together being a mindset and entrepreneurial coach while traveling the world out of a suitcase! “

If you’ve been contemplating an investment or life change for awhile, I’d encourage you to ask that very question:

Why NOT me?

As a former teacher, content curator, and now coach, Belle invites us to invest in ourselves while understanding that every career or experience isn’t something we need to hold on to forever - in the same way you purchase a winter coat that you’ll only wear for a few months out of the year (but still value, need, and be willing to invest in), coaches, programs, and courses may be perfect for you (and worth investing in) without having to be the “forever” plan.

Her final words of advice: be courageous, and do it fearful.

It’s 100% okay (and normal) to be scared of growth and change, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop. Commit to making your dreams a reality and follow them courageously!

Ep. 10: Progressive Change - Guest Karissa Housden

Ep. 10: Progressive Change - Guest Karissa Housden

Karissa shares about her experiences with mindset growth over the past few years. She’s found that her journey has been a series of progressive changes and discoveries: her marriage, community, and business have all been areas impacted by her exploration into personal development.

As someone who tends towards logic and analysis, Karissa initially found the online space to be bit “woo woo”, an idea she connected to spirituality as well as to mindfulness and personal development. After being very closed off to these avenues, she eventually became more open to the idea of expanding her perspective, which led to various shifts in how she views herself and the world.

One thing that was impactful: personal connections.

She recognized that her perceptions of others had created a “box of what I thought ‘these’ people were like”....and that making real connections broke those barriers down and opened the door to a variety of new relationships and ideas.

She also came to realize that so many reactions we have to the world (and the people in it) are based on internalized conflicts that have remained unresolved. By acknowledging and processing these areas, she’s found healing and growth, a lot of which was tied to releasing control and letting go of things she has no power to change.

Her parting advice:Be open to different perspectives, and make connections with people who think differently from you.

Ep. 9: Hypnosis - Guest Jennifer Schlueter

Ep. 9: Hypnosis - Guest Jennifer Schlueter

Most of us know about stage hypnosis (and the attention seekers willing to cluck like chickens for the show!), but that is not the point of actual hypnosis.

Guest Jennifer Schleuter joins us to share about the art of relaxing the mind and opening up the subconscious in order to remove limiting beliefs and "blocks", most of which are connected to our past.

Her journey in hypnosis actually started when she was living in Los Angeles, living a full life with an inspiring job, nice apartment, and great friends...and yet somehow feeling deeply unfulfilled. After a single hypnosis session she knew with great clarity that she was going to begin traveling and gain time freedom.

Since then, she left her job, lived off her savings while attempting to become an influencer, scrapped that to become a VA, and eventually transitioned to hypnotherapy, returning to the practice that had caused her to change her own life so drastically.

Jennifer primarily works with entrepreneurs who KNOW they want to do more in their businesses...but find that it just isn’t happening. By using hypnosis to identify internalized stories, Jennifer is able to guide clients through the process of changing those narratives and breaking free from the past.

Her parting advice: love others and love yourself.

To connect with Jennifer, you can find her in a number of places:

InstagramYouTube, Facebook, and her amazing travel blog, Discovering Legacies.

She would love to actually hear from you; don’t be afraid to send a message or reach out!

Correction: Jennifer mentions theta brainwaves as occurring from 5-8, but they actually happen from ages 2-4.
