Vol 104 Relaxation Time With Great Piano pieces & Gildy's Fair Dilemma
Sounds Like Radio (SLR) Volume 104 sees The Great Gildersleeve from September 27, 1950 with a bit of a dilemma.  Does he set a good example for Leroy by practicing the piano as Leroy is supposed to be doing or does he hop off to the fair with good old Nurse Milford.   A hard choice for Gildy either it's piano time or he takes a turn for the nurse!     It's not a hard choice here though for Your Humble Host the accent is all on the piano today as we are presenting a fantastic set of piano music that I think you won't soon forget.  Piano classic songs and rare relaxation piano pieces I have come across over the years and now is the perfect time to share.   We'll even hear the Bing Crosby song that started it all for me and I've been hooked on Bing ever since.  We'll also demonstrate the differences in the 2 different piano intro's. to that song.  The accent on piano music continues with a very unusual piano classic by Satie, Dooley Wilson plays it again, 101 Strings all crowd into the Sounds Like Radio studio for a song classic of their own and Al Jolson and Jimmy Durante show us piano music their style and Doris Day answers an important question for us.  Your Humble Host at times finds himself quite mesmerized by the music in this one, close your eyes on some of these songs and you will too.  Enjoy a special show today.

Vol 103 Gildy Needs A New Secretary & Palisades Amusement Park
In Volume 103 of Sounds Like Radio, Gildersleeve's secretary Bessie has run off and gotten married.  Now Gildy needs a new secretary, Bessie sends in Sandra Gould to replace her.  Uh oh, Gildy still needs a new secretary.  Sandra Gould is most famous for playing Mrs. Kravitz on Bewitched but now she's on this Great Gildersleeve from September 20, 1950.   The Jolly Boys have suggestions for their idea of the perfect secretary for Gildy.  Thankfully we also have Jimmy Dean, Julie London, Bing Crosby, Jim Reeves, Rosemary Clooney, Al Jolson and Blossom Dearie to offer their own style of help.  Oh, I like their style.  Listen for Your Humble Host's favorite Blossom song in this show, I think you'll agree.

Vol 102 Gildersleeve Meets Aunt Victoria, Is This A Good Thing?
In Volume 102 of Sounds Like Radio Marjorie wants the Bronco family and the GIldersleeves to meet.  That means meeting Bronco's Aunt Victoria in this September 13, 1950 edition of The Great Gildersleeve.  Seems though Gildersleeve's not thrilled with the meeting and has a few tricks up his sleeve.  But Aunt Victoria holds some surprises for Gildersleeve too.  Hmmm, the Aunt ain't all that bad. Your Humble Host turns to Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Johnny Hartman, and Billie Holiday to all comment on this tricky situation.  Let's listen to this very fine musical outing on today's Sounds Like Radio.

Vol 108 Sherlock Holmes Enters The Library of Sound
In Volume 108 of the Library of Sound it's elementary which classic detective show we should hear from next, none other than Sherlock Holmes.  When I started reading detective stories (other than those written by Edgar Allan Poe) it was the Sherlock Holmes complete series of books I read first.  That was what started my path on reading more classic detectives like Philip Marlowe, Nero Wolfe and many others.  Today we have an episode of Sherlock that, like the Nero Wolfe radio shows we've presented here, is based on the actual Arthur Conan Doyle story as written.  It stars the classic British duo (my favorite of the British Sherlock and Watsons) Carleton Hobbs & Norman Shelly.   These 2 were perfect to me in their roles.  I first heard their versions of Sherlock back in the 1970's and have been impressed ever since.  Today we have one of their first Sherlock's it's from May 12, 1959 as they present the story of "The Man With The Twisted Lip".    Your Humble Host is ready for the beginning of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes!  Enjoy.

Vol 101 Gildersleeve's A New Man, Marjorie's Having A Baby!
In Volume 101 of The Great Gildersleeve it's the beginning of a new season on September 6, 1950.  What better way to start than with a new Gildersleeve.  Another historic Gildy for you as this is the first time the great Willard Waterman plays our hero.   If you were to corner me and insist on an answer I'd have to admit Willard Waterman is my favorite Gildersleeve.  Most people in fact who were around back in the day only remember Willard Waterman as the one who played Gildersleeve.   And with the start of a brand new season comes news from "Little" Marjorie who is still a newlywed and with news a newlywed after a couple months might have.   Find out as Patsy Cline, Desi Arnaz (Ricky Ricardo himself from I Love Lucy), Bing Crosby, Jo Stafford, Louis Prima and Madeleine Peyroux all join your Humble Host to celebrate this new season, new Gildy and news from Marjorie. By the way, the picture accompanying this episode is the historic occasion when BOTH of the Gildersleeves met, Harold Peary says goodbye as Willard Waterman enters to say hello.  A warm welcome is how we greet Willard Waterman!

Vol 100 Gildy's Ready For A Houseboat Vacation
Your Humble Host is happy to bring you Sounds Like Radio's 100th episode.   It's also historic considering this is also Harold Peary's final appearance on The Great Gildersleeve.  Harold Peary thought he'd carry the show to CBS but Mr. Kraft had other ideas.  We'll explain all about that and in today's GIldersleeve show from June 14, 1950 it's the end of the season for Gildy and the beginning of Summer vacation as Gildy plans to take a vacation on the houseboat with the whole family.  But the Jolly Boys have plans of their own for that houseboat.   Oh me trouble's brewin' but no need to worry as we got plenty of help on hand as Astrud Gilberto, William Frawley (Fred Mertz from I Love Lucy also Bub from My 3 Sons), Buddy Ebsen (Uncle Jed from Beverly Hillbillies), Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday and Rosemary Clooney are all here to help not only the Gildy sitation but to celebrate our 100th Gildy & Music Sounds Like Radio show!!  Get out a noisemaker and give a hoot for Sounds Like Radio!

Vol 99 House Boat Dreams Float About
In Volume 99 of Sounds Like Radio Gildersleeve's dream of sailing a Houseboat come to life with Katherine.   But things don't quite work out the way Gildy wants.  A deserving bit of fun awaits Gildy from the Jolly Boys in this June 7, 1950 episode of the Great Gildersleeve.  To help that dream of sailing away Houseboat style are Roy Rogers, lovely Connie Stevens, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee's flamingos, Jimmy Dean sings his most famous song while eating a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and Doris Day wants us to be hers.  OK by me.  This is a fun show to listen to and the music is nice and warm just like the waters.

Vol 98 It's Sadie Hawkins Day on Gildersleeve
It’s Volume 98 of Your Humble Host’s Sounds Like Radio and today we see Harold Peary’s stint as the Great Gildersleeve shortly about to go bye-bye. After today’s show from May 31, 1950 it’s just two more episodes to go for Peary. But Gildy’s not worried about that, he’s anticipating his girlfriend, Katherine to invite him to a Sadie Hawkins Dance!  That’s right it’s Sadie Hawkins day and Gildy’s waiting for an invite. So far, the phone hasn’t rung not even one ting-aling. Now that’s reason to worry. We’ll find out what kind of advice we get for both Gildy and Katherine as we enjoy the lush sounds of  Eddie Arnold, The King Sisters, a rare stereo ‘30’s record from Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Helen O’Connell, Al Jolson sings my Grandmother’s favorite song, Madeleine Peyroux & Fred Astaire (who better to advise on dancing, anyway?).  Enjoy.

Vol 95 Marjorie Gets Married in Today's Great Gildersleeve!
It's Volume 95 of Sounds Like Radio and Your Humble Host is proud to announce the big day has finally arrived!  Marjorie gets married today to Bronco.  This was an historic show for the Great Gildersleeve as this show followed Gildersleeve's niece through time.  Going from "little Marjorie" when she's first adopted by Gildy in the beginning 1943 episodes to May 10, 1950 as she is now a young lady getting married.   This was one of the very few shows that had people maturing and growing in real time as the show went along.   We even have a picture you see next to this episode that shows Marjorie, Gildy & Leroy all at the church for the Wedding from that special issue of Look magazine Harold Peary talks about. All of our favorite singers were invited too to sing for a piece of the wedding cake.  Today we'll hear from the Ink Spots (from the album I got when I was 5) also singing for their supper will be Patti Page, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, Dean Martin, the Teddy Bears and Ted Lewis is there to officiate the wedding down that old church aisle.  This is a fun show I think you're going to like.

Vol 98 Holpalong Cassidy Rides Into Frightened Town
From out of the Wild West and into "The Frightened Town" comes our favorite cowboy, Hopalong Cassidy!   In Volume 98 from the western division of the Vast Library of Sound is another exciting story with Hoppy & his pal California, one of our favorites Andy Clyde.  It was Andy Clyde who also starred with our very own Grandpa on Sounds Like Radio, Walter Brennan.  Andy & Walter played 2 crotchety old friends on another favorite of mine, "The Real McCoys".  Thanks to DVDs I'm watching the Real McCoys again and I love it.  But before Andy joined Grandpa on the Real McCoys he was Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick and he's here right now in this January 20, 1951 edition of Hopalong Cassidy.   By the way, in the picture here that's next to today's show you see Hopalong, Andy Clyde and the one and only George Reeves the real Superman from television!!   Superman himself played in several Hopalong movies before his Superman days began.  OK now, let's ride.

Vol 96 Phil Harris-Alice Faye 1st Rexall Show on Library of Sound
From Volume 96 of the Vast Library of Sound comes the very first show Phil Harris and Alice Faye ever did for the Rexall people.   I think Rexall was the one sponsor most associated with the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show due to the calming voice of Griff Barnett who was "your family druggist" and the voice of the Rexall commercials on the show.   For a long time his voice reminded me of someone I had seen before, then it finally hit me, he was the guy that played Janet Leigh's father in the classic Christmas movie "A Holiday Affair" with Robert Mitchum.  That was something that bothered me for years till I finally figured it out.    The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show and the Jack Benny Show were the 2 funniest radio shows on.  They are literally for me laugh out loud programs.   Enjoy a laugh today from the Library of Sound.

Vol 92 Marjorie & Her Mother's Wedding Dress For Her Wedding on Great Gildersleeve
In Volume 92 from Sounds Like Radio we have a very special episode of The Great Gildersleeve for it's here we hear about Marjorie & Leroy's late mother who was Gildersleeve's sister and the letter she left behind with her hopes for her children.   Gildy comes across it in the attic while looking for the wedding dress Marjorie would like to wear, her mother's.   This is a nice episode and one of the reasons this series stands out from most others, its dramatic, touching and yet funny.   This is a show concerned with weddings and to help out with the dress and even the ring we have some fine singers and their ideas, Peggy Lee in a nice and unusual song, a visit from Crazy Gugenheim, Gale Storm (My Little Marjorie herself), Bing Crosby, and from my old album (pictured here) from when I was a little kid-Sophie Tucker and her matrimonial ideas and to close out Al Jolson with a little ditty he contributes.   Well, it's a fun show filled with good feelings and good music.  Enjoy.

Brand New Christmas Special Vol 7 from Sounds Like Radio
We’re back with another NEW 2021 Christmas Special!  This is Volume 7 of our series of Christmas Special shows featuring the greatest Christmas music you may not have heard in a while and a Great Gildersleeve Christmas show too. We started our Christmas Sounds Like Radio shows in 2020 with Volumes 1 thru 5 (we keep them available on this podcast to you all year long for those who like Christmas music even when it’s not Christmas time). This year we’ve presented Volume 6 and now here’s Volume 7! This is the Great Gildersleeve episode we had to skip a couple months ago since this is a Christmas show from December 21, 1949 when Marjorie & Bronco have a very special announcement and Gildy has a very touching gift for Marjorie. This is one of the best written episodes of the Gildy series. This is the main reason we present the Great Gildersleeve each week, it was such a quality written show, amusing and at times quite touching and emotional. This episode is an example.   Enjoy our wonderful Christmas music we have for you here and also a very nice Christmas episode of The Great Gildersleeve. (By the way, that's Julie London pictured here with this show dressed as Santa as she’ll be singing us a really sweet song today on Volume 7 too.)

This is the December 14, 1949 show that would become a traditional Christmastime story each year (though done a little differently each year) in the future of Gildy. Just a few of the great singers you’ll hear today are Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Jo Stafford, Bing Crosby (couldn’t do a Christmas show without this guy) and more including a special visit from Grandpa with one of his Christmas stories we love to hear. No more hints as to what’s coming, time to listen and enjoy the holidays with Sounds Like Radio.

Vol 74 Jolly Boys Band-Thanksgiving & Great Music
Volume 74 with The Great Gildersleeve November 23, 1949 episode.  This is the show where the winner was announced of the Name That Gildersleeve Song contest.  Also you’ll hear the Jolly Boys as they want to form their own band with Gildy on the trombone. Now for an explanation, we had to skip this show when it was originally scheduled after Sounds Like Radio's Vol. 73 (that was the 11/16/49 episode) BECAUSE this episode mentions Thanksgiving that is coming up. So while I wouldn’t call this a Thanksgiving show, it is mentioned, so we saved it for now at this “more convenient hour” or in this case more relevant time period. By the way that's Tammy Wynette (seen in our fall type picture on our Anchor podcast site next to this show) who will sing a moving song in today's show.   Next Week we will feature our Classic Thanksgiving Holiday Show with all the fixin’s!!

It’s fun, interesting, & funny and it’s all good stuff.  Let's all hit that play button and enjoy.
