Episode 101 - ‘Balls Out Bowling’, Stealing a Self-Driving Taxi & Olympics on Steroids

Welcome to episode 101 of the official podcast of Your Unofficial Boys. Every week we review beers, talk sports and discuss funny current events. Please like and subscribe!

Episode Guide:

Beers of the Week:

  • Hop Raider by New Belgium (Asheville, NC) - 3.50
  • Bigfoot by Sierra Nevada (Mills River, NC) - Rating: 2.50

Facts of the Week:

  • Your brain is constantly eating itself. This process is called phagocytosis, where cells envelop and consume smaller cells or molecules to remove them from the system. Don’t worry! Phagocytosis isn't harmful, but actually helps preserve your gray matter.
  • The largest piece of fossilized dinosaur poop discovered is over 30cm long and over two liters in volume. Believed to be a Tyrannosaurus rex turd, the fossilized dung (also named a 'coprolite') is helping scientists better understand what the dinosaur ate.
  • Animals can experience time differently from humans. To smaller animals, the world around them moves more slowly compared to humans. Salamanders and lizards, for example, experience time more slowly than cats and dogs. This is because the perception of time depends on how quickly the brain can process incoming information.
  • The world’s oldest dog lived to 29.5 years old. While the median age a dog reaches tends to be about 10-15 years, one Australian cattle dog, ‘Bluey’, survived to the ripe old age of 29.5.
  • The world’s oldest cat lived to be 38 years and three days old. Creme Puff was the oldest cat to ever live.
  • NASA genuinely faked part of the Moon landing. While Neil Armstrong's first steps on the lunar surface were categorically not faked, the astronaut quarantine protocol when the astronauts arrived back on Earth was largely just one big show.
  • Platypuses sweat milk. This is because it doesn't have teats. Milk appears as sweat on a platypus, but it's an aquatic mammal so it doesn't actually sweat at all.

Friendly Advice:

  • The next time your significant other gets angry, drape a towel over her shoulders (like a cape) and say, “ now you’re SUPER ANGRY!” Maybe she’ll laugh. Maybe you’ll die.
  • My advice to anyone at an unpaid internship - steal from them. Big stuff too. Take the copier. Roll it right onto the elevator.
  • Alcohol does not give you answers, but it certainly helps forget the question.
  • If you swim with a friend, your chances of getting eaten by a shark will drop by 50%.
  • Don’t make snow angels in a dog park.
  • My father once told me, "Son, if you want people to listen to what you have to say, claim it's something your father told you."

Unofficial News

  • 'Balls Out Bowling' event invites bowlers to roll in the nude
  • Man arrested and accused of trying to steal a self-driving taxi in L.A.
  • Billionaire Peter Thiel bankrolling ‘Olympics on steroids’ event that allows athletes to dope.

Unofficial Fanzone:

  • MLB Spring Training.

  • NFL Free Agents.

Episode 94 - The Week Before Christmas, a Fake School Shooting & Smuggling Prairie Dogs

Welcome to episode 94 of the official podcast of Your Unofficial Boys. Every week we review beers, talk sports and discuss funny current events. Please like and Subscribe!

Episode Guide:

Beers of the Week:

  • EggNog Shake by Westbrook Brewing (Mt. Pleasant, SC) - Rating: 3.50
  • Cranberry Crumble by Twenty-Six Acres Brewing Co (Concord, NC) - Rating: 4.00

Facts of the Week:

  • People have been sending Christmas cards since 1843. In 1843, the custom of sending Christmas cards began. At the time, Sir Henry Cole worked as a senior civil servant and had helped set up what would become the Post Office, and he wanted to try and encourage it to be used by ordinary people.
  • The biggest Christmas gift ever was sent in 1865. In 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye proposed a gift from France to the United States to commemorate their commitment to democracy and honor the late president Abraham Lincoln. The Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated in 1886 and has since become an iconic symbol of the United States!
  • Jingle Bells was the first Christmas song in space. In 1965, it became the first song to be played in space. That's right, not just the first Christmas song...but the first song ever! During the Gemini 6A space flight, it was broadcast as a prank from the astronauts to those down below.
  • Santa wasn't always dressed in red. The common myth is that Santa Claus was green before Coca-Cola used their colors, red, for their marketing campaigns in the early 1900s. Whilst this is true to an extent, Santa was shown in red as early as the 1870s by the American cartoonist Thomas Nast. The modern-day depiction of Santa, with his reddened cheeks and large stomach, his little glasses, and a beaming smile, is what we can genuinely thank Coca-Cola for. We can't imagine a Santa that isn't red!
  • Spiders are a traditional Eastern European Christmas decoration. In many Eastern European countries, particularly in Ukraine, finding a spider or a spider's web in your Christmas tree is a symbol of good luck! That's because these countries have the legend of the Christmas spider, which tells that a poor widow lived in a small hut with her children. They found a pinecone in summer and cared for it diligently until it became a pretty tree!

  • While Halloween is seemingly all about ghosts and ghouls, there’s also an amorous element. Some Halloween rituals saw women looking for clues about their future husbands. In the 18th century, women threw apple peels over their shoulders, hoping to see the initials of their future love.
  • While bonfires are linked to Bonfire Night traditionally, they’re also common at Halloween, and their past is also a little spookier than you’d imagine. Original Celtic bonfires were more aptly named ‘bone fires’ as the Celts threw animal bones into the flames to ward off those evil spirits again.
  • While many people don’t enjoy the scary and the spooky, not many can say they have a genuine, recognised phobia of this time of the year. Some people can, however, and the official name for this fear is ‘Samhainophobia’. People suffering from Samhainophobia experience anxiety and terror about anything Halloween-related, and seeking professional therapy is the best next step!'
  • The rituals of the ancient Celts were more bloodthirsty than the costumes of modern-day Halloween. In traditional Samhain celebrations, the Celts’ masks were made from animal skins and other parts of dead animals. The masks were said to ward off evil spirits as they passed on at this spooky time of year.
