Episode 160: Ken Paskins of The Shift Spot

We welcome Ken to share his story and answer 12 Questions in 30 Minutes

Ken Paskins, Founder of GCE Strategic Consulting and The Shift Spot, is an accomplished CEO / COO and Executive Coach. He brings a broad range of leadership experience, including operations, sales, acquisitions, strategic planning, and P&L management (up to $500M) while leading teams north of 400+ people across North America and Europe for Fortune 100 companies such as Oracle.

Raised in Noblesville, Indiana, and a graduate of Purdue University, Ken grew up in a “hope and pray” entrepreneurial family--meaning that his family lived in either a boom or bust state depending on which idea “made it” and which one ended up with the lights being turned off. He watched his father and grandfather try to make businesses work while learning on the job, and not having the experience needed to truly know how to run a successful business, so he decided there had to be a better way and worked his way up the corporate ladder learning the skills needed to run a business the right way.

Over the course of 3 decades, Ken has utilized his skills and experiences and is known as a “hired gun” or fractional COO, helping companies from pre-revenue to $50M. His clients include HVAC, accounting firms, legal practices, software companies, etc. Additionally, he has experience in PE, VC (including Sequoia) and M&A. One of his most notable accomplishments included closing a $40M+ software deal days after the tragedy of 9/11. He has leveraged his 30-year knowledge base to be able to help other business owners to work on the business instead of in the business at The Shift Spot.

Episode 158: Jeff Seckendorf of The Institute Of Purpose

Episode 158: Jeff Seckendorf of The Institute Of Purpose

We welcome Jeff to share his story and answer 12 Questions in 30 Minutes

Jeff began his career as a photographer and filmmaker, first as a stills photographer for UPI and other national publications, then as a director/cameraman producing, directing, and/or photographing over 1000 TV commercials, dozens of music videos, movies, and documentaries. One recent project documents a team of Parkinson’s patients on a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Jeff has won numerous awards for his cinematography, including Sundance Film Festival and Independent Spirit Award nominations for best cinematography.

In 2008 Jeff eased out of the film industry and founded Unified Team Diving, a global scuba training and certification agency. While traveling the world training scuba instructors, Jeff authored eight training manuals and dozens of online courses. Jeff also teaches a “train the trainer” corporate leadership course. In 2022 Jeff became the Director of Operations for the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego.

As a masters athlete Jeff races a bicycle on track and has stood on the podium multiple times at the California state championships. He holds the hour record in his age group at the San Diego Velodrome and is a course record holder at the World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships. Jeff’s current project on the bike is an attempt to break the U.S. hour record in the 70-74 age group. This entails riding his bike over 44 kilometers in one hour in a velodrome of his choosing.

The hour record has led to his renewed interest in purpose. Initially this ride was completely self-serving, much like climbing a mountain because it’s there. But that seemed like an empty reason to do all this hard work. So, as his training ramped up and got harder, and the commitment became more important, the purpose came into very clear focus and Jeff realized he could use this event to motivate others to find purpose.

Jeff also offers a “Path to Mastery” workshop to help people discover what a renewed sense of purpose can look like. This short exercise guides the audience to look at something they are currently good at, how they got there, then apply that to something new. This interactive session looks at a process of discovery/training/practice/teaching and helps people answer the question, “I need a new purpose but I don’t know what to do and I don’t know what I’m good at.”

Jeff is a dynamic speaker who brings out the best in his audience. Drawing on a lifetime of experiences as a flight instructor, competition aerobatic pilot, scuba instructor, ice climber, cross country ski racer, big mountain trekker, triathlete, and now a nationally classed cyclist, Jeff engages his audiences at many levels.

Episode 157: Parrish Collins of Collins & Collins, P.C.

Episode 157: Parrish Collins of Collins & Collins, P.C.

We welcome Parrish to share his story and answer 12 Questions in 30 Minutes

Albuquerque attorney, Parrish Collins, has been practicing law since 1989 following graduation from Duke University School of Law.

Parrish has handled personal injury, medical malpractice and wrongful death cases for 20 years. In early 2017, Parrish turned his attention to prison and jail medical negligence.

Since that time, prison and jail medical negligence has become a passion for Parrish and Collins & Collins, P.C. Since turning his focus to prison and jail medical negligence and filing the firm’s first case in January 2018, the Collins & Collins, P.C. has filed many prison medical negligence and civil rights lawsuits and will be filing many more.

These cases have been filed as state law medical malpractice claims and federal civil rights claims.  As the firm files more and more lawsuits, the civil rights claims for each successive case become significantly stronger due to the clear patterns and practices of gross negligence, reckless disregard for the health of inmates and deliberately cruel refusal of proper medical care become too clear for even the most conservative  judges to ignore.

Improving the medical care in New Mexico prisons and jails has become a passion for Parrish. Over the course of the many prison and jail lawsuits filed by Collins & Collins, P.C., the firm has uncovered startling levels of extreme and deliberate medical neglect that has caused countless severe injuries and/or deaths to inmates.

In addition to the cruelties inflicted on inmates, the actions and inactions of New Mexico prisons, jails and their contractors are costing New Mexico taxpayers untold millions as a result of countless extensive hospitalizations paid by Medicaid and/or written off by New Mexico hospitals (state, local, county and private).  This is just the beginning of the burden on taxpayers which include lifetime medical care, disability and other public assistance for the inmates and their families.

This is in addition to the hundreds of millions paid to out of state billion dollar corporations under contracts which are routinely and grotesquely violated.  The true costs to taxpayers of medical neglect in New Mexico prisons and jails has never been calculated by state, county or local government.  Collins & Collins, P.C. seems at times to be the only entity in state concerned about these costs.

Worse, the horrifying consequences to inmates of deliberate refusal of adequate medical care along with the resulting costs to taxpayers will continue to soar as the medical care in New Mexico prisons and jails is getting exponentially worse.

This is despite the large and growing number of lawsuits filed by the Collins & Collins, P.C. and other firms and organizations, and the hundreds of notices of claims sent to New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD), the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC)  and other county jails outlining the deliberate cruelties and the consequences to inmates.

Only time will tell, but if history is any indication, medical care in New Mexico prisons and jails will keep getting worse as they simply recycle one bad contractor or another, often brining in contractors who have previously been ousted from NMCD, MDC and other county jails.  Even worse, the individual medical providers (doctors, nurse, physician assistants,…) remain in place for the most part with each successive contractor.

Very rarely do any of the correctional staff or the medical providers themselves report wrongdoing. A rare exception is the recent Declaration/Affidavit provided by a former Corizon and Centurion nurse who worked at MDC which lays bare the abuses of these two corporate behemoths of which NMCD and MDC have been well aware for years.

Here are the Prison and Jail Medical Neglect Lawsuits filed by Collins & Collins, P.C.
