S9 Ep08 The Michael Magro Foundation: Supporting Families of Children with Cancer
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Terrie Magro, co-founder of the Michael Magro Foundation.
Back in 2004, Terrie and her husband, Paul faced an unimaginable situation when not one, but both of their two young sons, were diagnosed with cancer. While their younger son Marc recovered, their older son Michael lost his battle with Leukemia at age thirteen, just months after being diagnosed.
During the tumultuous, emotional time their family faced during both their sons’ illnesses, Terrie and Paul also observed the enormous stress, strain and life disruptions other families of children with cancer were experiencing. Seeing a great need to help these families, Terrie and Paul’s hearts were moved to begin the The Michael Magro Foundation in 2005, with a mission “to better the lives of children with cancer, pediatric cancer survivors and their families, as well as other chronic pediatric illnesses.”
Terrie Magro will be joined by board member, Dawn Dardzinski and together, they will share their passion for the work of the Michael Magro Foundation and will discuss their hopes and vision for the foundation’s future.

S9 Ep07 "Lucky" Luckadoo, A Master of the Air
Many of you might remember a guest we had back in season six by the name of John “Lucky” Luckadoo, the last surviving original pilot from the 100th Bomb group. As a B-17 Bomber Pilot, he flew twenty five missions out of England during WWII.
When we spoke with Lucky, he was with author, Kevin Maurer who told his story in a book called, “Damn Lucky, One Man’s Courage During the Bloodiest Military Campaign in Aviation History”. Almost two years have passed since that episode aired and we have continued to stay in touch with Lucky. In February of this year, (2024) I was able speak with Lucky who, at the time, was three weeks shy of his 102nd birthday!
In this episode of Your History Your Story, I’ll be sharing my conversation with Lucky about the recent Apple TV series “Masters of the Air”, which tells the story of the 100th Bomb Group, known as the “Bloody Hundredth”. Although, when we spoke, all the episodes had not yet aired, I was able to get Lucky’s thoughts on what he had seen so far and how it compared to what really happened.

De Langlade, who was of mixed Native American and French ancestry, was a fur trader and successful leader of both European soldiers and tribal warriors in North America during the mid to late 18th century. Kathy will also talk about her late husband’s deep passion for art, learning and observing people and things in his environment.
In 2007, Kathy began the Anthony Quinn Foundation to honor her husband’s memory and his love for the arts by providing scholarships for high school students who wish to attend a recognized, pre-college or summer intensive art education program.

In 2003, nine year old presidential history buff Kurt Deion, presented his father with a gigantic request: to visit the graves of all the Presidents of the United States. Kurt’s dad accepted his son’s request and thus began a decade long adventure of a lifetime that came to include all of the Vice Presidents as well and took Kurt and his family all across the country!
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Kurt Deion, public historian and author of the book, “Presidential Grave Hunter: One Kid’s Quest to Visit the Tombs of every President and Vice-President”.
Kurt will share experiences from his quest, such as attending a Sunday school class led by Jimmy Carter, paying his respects to Ronald Reagan as he lay in state in the Capital Rotunda and standing next to assassinated President James Garfield’s casket in a section of his tomb that only a handful of people had visited in the last fifty years! He will also tell us stories he learned along the way that include grave robberies and a forensic exhumation.

Becky will tell us about the food of the Gilded Age including stories about railroads and dining, picnic baskets, the rise of restaurants and a food making demonstration at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
Becky will also talk about a few of the recipes in her book, which include one called Aunt Lizzie’s Pineapple Pie that was handed down to her through her own family from her great-great aunt.

The name Benedict Arnold is almost always associated with being a traitor. In 1780 Arnold, who was then the commander of West Point, a strategic American fort on the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War, handed over military secrets to a British spy named Major Andre.
However, Andre was captured and Arnold’s treasonous act was discovered. While Andre was tried and hanged by the Americans, Arnold was able to escape and eventually fight for the British against his former comrades.

By the end of the 19th century, the city of Galveston, located on a barrier island off the southeast coast of Texas, had become a thriving commercial center and one of the busiest ports in the United States.
Sadly, that all changed on September 8th 1900, when a catastrophic hurricane roared into Galveston from the Gulf of Mexico with heavy rain, powerful winds and a deadly storm surge. On Christmas Eve, 1741, a small group of Moravian settlers gathered together in a house at the confluence of the Monocacy & Lehigh rivers in what was then the colony of Pennsylvania. It was on that night that their leader, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf decided to name their new home “Bethlehem”, after the birthplace of Jesus.

S8 Ep10 A Gift of Life: Two Moms United by One Heart
Holly Campbell gave birth to her son, Jake in 2007. At just two and a half months old, Jake suddenly stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. The following day, Holly and her husband were told the devastating news that their baby was not going to survive. In their grief, they wanted to give their son a legacy and help others, so the selfless decision to donate Jake’s heart was made.
During this same time period and nearly 1,000 miles away, Kim Scadlock gave birth to her son, Beckham. Beckham seemed healthy at birth, but soon medical staff discovered he was struggling to breathe. After tests were done, Kim and her husband were told Beckham’s only chance to survive was to receive a heart transplant.
Thankfully, Jake’s heart was a match for Beckham and the transplant took place. Afterward, while both families were in the process of grieving and healing, they thought of each other often, although they did not know each other’s identity. Through the organ donor networks, the families were eventually able to contact each other and in 2010, Holly, Kim and their families met for the very first time at the Transplant Games in Wisconsin.
Thirteen years later in 2023, Holly and Kim were invited to performed the song “For Good” from the musical, “Wicked” on the popular television show, America’s Got Talent. “For Good” has a special meaning for Holly as it was the last song she was able to sing to Jake before he passed and also special for Kim, as it was the first song she sang to Beckham after he received his new heart.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, Holly and Kim will share their story of love, friendship and the importance of life saving organ donation.

S8 Ep09 "Flee North" with Author Scott Shane
Thomas Smallwood was born into slavery in Maryland in 1801. Smallwood, a shoemaker, later moved to Washington DC where, at age 30, he was able to purchase his freedom. While living in Washington, he witnessed the day to day activities of slave traders who were involved in selling enslaved blacks into the Deep South, where they would work on cotton and sugar plantations. The domestic slave trade often permanently separated wives from husbands and children from parents.
In this environment in which both enslaved and free blacks were fearful of being sold south, Smallwood became determined to take action to help people to escape north to Canada, where they would be safe from slave hunters seeking to return them to their enslavers.
Smallwood, who was self educated, eventually teamed up with a much younger, Yale educated, white abolitionist from Massachusetts named Charles Torrey. Together, the two men created what may have been the first Underground Railroad that ran through Washington DC, helping many to escape being sold south. In addition to facilitating escapes,Smallwood became a prolific writer and taunted slave traders through articles he wrote that were published in northern newspapers.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with author and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Scott Shane. Scott will share exciting stories from his recently released book, “Flee North: A Forgotten Hero and the Fight for Freedom in Slavery’s Borderland”.
“Flee North” tells the story of Smallwood, Torrey and their fight against the domestic slave trade in the 1840’s.

S8 Ep08 Kisses on a Postcard
During the first months of World War II, in anticipation of bombing raids and a possible invasion by Hitler’s Germany, the British government ordered the evacuation of children from London and other cities that might become potential targets. The effort was dubbed “Operation Pied Piper” resulting in hundreds of thousands of children being evacuated to rural areas of the country.
Two such children were Jack Frisby, age 11 and his brother Terry, age 7. One day in 1940, Jack and Terry were placed on a train in London by their mother, along with many of their classmates and other neighborhood children, bound for a small village in Cornwall, England. Once in Cornwall, they were to be placed with an unknown host family.
Jack and Terry’s mother, who clearly desired to keep her boys safe from the bombings in London, was also concerned about their well-being in a household of strangers. Therefore, she came up with a special code for her boys to use once they arrived at their destination. The code was in the form of kisses on a postcard that they would send home. The number of kisses would let her know if they were happy and safe, just okay or sad and maybe in danger. Thankfully, the boys loved their temporary home and smothered their postcard with many kisses.
Terry Frisby survived the war and went on to become a famous playwright and actor who wrote a book and an award winning BBC radio play telling the story of his four year experience as an evacuee during WWII.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with author, comedian and financial commentator, Dominic Frisby. Dominic is the son of Terry Frisby and has a deep desire to bring new light to his father’s moving and riveting story.
Dominic has adapted, directed and produced a ten episode musical podcast called Kisses on a Postcard, which tells his father’s story in a very engaging, exciting and entertaining way.

S8 Ep07 The Nothnagle Log Home, A National Historic Landmark
The Nothnagle Log Home is an historic log cabin located near the Nehaunsey Creek in Gibbstown, Gloucester County, New Jersey.
The cabin was built by Finnish settlers in the mid 17th century using tongue and groove construction without the use of any nails.
It is considered to be one of the oldest log cabins of its type in its original location in the United States.
In addition to its early Finnish residents, the Nothnagle Cabin has served as a home for tenant farmers, a butcher shop, smoke house and a dairy business.
Over the past fifty years, the cabin, along with its’ adjoining 18th century house, has been owned by Doris Rink and her late husband, Harry. The Rink’s have given the cabin much love and care throughout the years and took great pleasure in sharing the cabin’s history with thousands of visitors.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Doris Rink who will be sharing the history of the Nothnagle Cabin, the people who built it and some curious and historic finds discovered by Doris and her husband.
The Nothnagle Log House is listed on both the National and New Jersey State Historic Registers.

S8 Ep06 "It''s A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Hawkins
Jimmy Hawkins is a classic TV and film actor known best for his role as Tommy Bailey in the iconic 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” In addition to this Christmas classic, he has appeared in various other films and television shows throughout his career including, Leave it to Beaver, Petticoat Junction & the Donna Reed Show. Jimmy also appeared with the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley in two movies, (“Girl Happy” and “Spinout”).
Over the years, Jimmy has enjoyed participating in positive and encouraging endeavors such as entertaining US troops in Vietnam and together with Henry Denker wrote the movie “Love Leads the Way”. The movie highlights the power of love, friendship, and the incredible assistance that guide dogs provide to people with visual impairments.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, Jimmy, who is also an author and movie producer, will be sharing memories from his incredible career and will talk about the many ways Frank Capra’s, “It’s a Wonderful Life” continues to inspire him to share its’ positive message.

S8 Ep05 General Hap Arnold: Aviation Pioneer and Visionary
Initially commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the infantry, a role he disliked, Arnold later jumped at the opportunity to train at the Wright Brothers Aviation School in Dayton, Ohio. It was there, in 1911, he became one of the first three qualified pilots in the US Military.
During the decades that followed, Arnold advanced in rank and responsibilities, becoming the Commanding General of Army Air Forces in 1942. During WW2, Arnold was responsible for overseeing a massive expansion of US Air Forces and for directing air combat activity against Germany and Japan.
Arnold’s contributions during that time would eventually earn him the five star general rank in both the US Army and the newly created US Air Force, which came into being in 1947. To date, Arnold is the only person to hold a 5-star rank in two US military branches.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with General Hap Arnold’s grandson, Robert Arnold. Robert will share stories about his grandfather’s life, including his love of practical jokes and his friendship with fellow aviation pioneers, Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Doolittle. Justin Breen was only thirteen years old when his dad passed away. Thankfully, Justin’s dad, who was a US soldier in Europe during WWII and a gifted storyteller, had left a diary. The diary included detailed descriptions of his perilous war experiences and demonstrated to Justin his father’s instinctive ability to survive and succeed.
By reading his father’s diary, Justin was able to learn more about his father and how his father’s natural instincts to rise to the top despite hardships affected his own way of thinking. Additionally, a cousin provided more family history about Justin’s grandparents, which helped solidify the family legacy of living life without excuses in order to be the best.

S8 Ep03 My Grandfather's Heartbeat, Memories with Mary Jean Eisenhower
Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890, the third of seven sons of David and Ida Eisenhower. Not long after Dwight’s birth, the family moved to Abilene, Kansas where he grew up. Dwight later attended West Point Military Academy, graduating in 1915 and soon after met Mamie Doud, who would become the love of his life. The two would be married for over fifty years.
Eisenhower rose to fame during World War II as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe, leading the successful D-Day invasion that played a significant role in the defeat of Nazi Germany.
In 1952, he was elected the 34th President of the United States.
Eisenhower's presidency focused on improving the nation’s infrastructure and was also marked by efforts to contain the spread of communism during the Cold War while maintaining peace and stability on the international stage. One of his initiatives, was the creation of the People to People International program, which he established in 1956 to improve understanding and friendship between citizens of different countries through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Mary Jean Eisenhower, youngest grandchild of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower. Mary Jean will share her memories of playing as a child in the White House, spending personal moments with her grandparents and meeting World leaders such as French President, Charles de Gaulle and Premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev.
Mary Jean will also tell how an encounter with Khrushchev’s son, Sergei in the 1990’s moved her to change careers in order to develop and expand People to People International, the program established by her grandfather.

S8 Ep02 Happy Trails: The Story of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, also known as the “King of the Cowboys” and “Queen of the West”, were household names throughout most of the second half of the 20th century.
Following several failed marriages each, they married in 1947 and remained married for over 50 years until Roy’s passing in 1998.
During their successful careers, the couple starred in numerous western films, often alongside Roy’s famous horse “Trigger”. They appeared on many television variety shows including one they hosted themselves. They also entertained their fans at many live events such as rodeos and parades & were often heard singing a song written by Dale, called “Happy Trails”.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Julie Rogers Pomilia, the granddaughter of Roy and Dale. Julie will be speaking about her recently released book, “Your Heroes, My Grandparents, a Granddaughter’s Love”. She will share stories about growing up in the Rogers family and how, despite a series of family challenges and tragedies, Roy & Dale were able to consistently foster an atmosphere of love, fun and faith.

Cuba’s revolutionary history dates back to the early 1950’s when the seeds were first planted for the eventual armed overthrow of Fulgencio Batista’s government by Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries on January 1, 1959. Against all odds and despite many attempts to remove him from power, Castro remained as Cuba’s leader until 2008, after nearly 50 years as the nation’s leader.
Our guest on this episode of Your History Your Story is historian, university professor and award-winning author, Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez.
Luis, who was born in Cuba, is a professor of history at the University of Central Florida and has an expertise in the areas of Latin America, the Caribbean and Latino - Hispanic politics, culture and society.
Luis will be discussing his book, “Revolutionary Cuba: A History” and will take us through the tumultuous period in Cuban history that includes Castro’s rise to power, his alignment with communism and the Soviet Union and events such as the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis which almost led to a nuclear world war in October 1962.

S7 Ep 10 New Jersey's Morris Canal
In the early 19th century, Americans seeking to escape crowded coastal towns and cities, began to settle further inland, away from navigable waterways. Since passable roads were scarce at that time, it became necessary to develop a transportation system that would enable the movement of goods across inland routes.
The canal system was a man-made waterway, where boats and barges powered by mules would transport freight to various markets along a specific route. One of those canals, called the Morris Canal, stretched 102 miles across the rugged landscape of Northern New Jersey from Phillipsburg on the Delaware River to Newark & later to the New York Harbor at Jersey City.
Construction of the Morris Canal began in 1825 and first opened for business in 1831. The canal was used to carry large quantities of coal from eastern Pennsylvania and also iron, lumber, agricultural and home goods to the east coast cities and points in between. Bloomfield, in Essex County New Jersey was one the communities through which the Morris Canal passed. For many years that town experienced benefits including, commercial and population growth, until the railroads brought about the closure of the canal in the early 20th century.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Bloomfield Councilman, Rich Rockwell. Rich, who is a council liaison to both the Morris Canal Greenway Committee and the Historic Preservation Commission, is also a trustee of the Historical Society of Bloomfield and author of the book, “Bloomfield Through Time”. He will talk about the history of the Morris Canal, including its engineering features, its affect on day to day life and its ultimate abandonment in 1924 after nearly 100 years of operation.
Rich will also tell of the efforts made in his community and the state of New Jersey to preserve the rich history of the Morris Canal. The very popular situation comedy, “Happy Days” ran for eleven seasons beginning in January 1974 and ending in July 1984.
The series was set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1950’s and early 1960’s and was centered around teenager, Richie Cunningham (played by Ron Howard), his family and friends, Potsie, Ralph and the local tough guy, Arthur Fonzarelli, known as “The Fonz”.
A prominent figure in the Cunningham family was Richie’s mom, Mrs. Cunningham, affectionately called “Mrs. C.” played by actress Marion Ross. During those eleven seasons, “Mrs. C.” earned a place in many people’s hearts as America’s mom.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be joined by Marion Ross, who is 94 years young and her son, actor, comedian and impressionist, Jim Meskimen. Marion will share a few stories from her autobiography, “My Days, Happy and Otherwise”. Stories will include her childhood in Minnesota and dreams of becoming an actress, her early career in movies and television and her rise to stardom as “Mrs. C.” on Happy Days.

S7 Ep03 Empire of Ice and Stone
In June 1913, a little over a year since the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic, the Karluk, which was the flagship of a three vessel Canadian Arctic expedition set off from British Columbia, near the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The expedition’s mission was to conduct geographical and scientific exploration in an area lying between Alaska and the North Pole.
The leader of the expedition was Vilhjalmur Stefansson, a Canadian born anthropologist, who had already spent several years studying the Inuit people (Eskimos) in arctic Canada. Stefansson had selected experienced arctic mariner, Robert Bartlett as Captain of the Karluk. Sadly, shortly into its’ journey, the Karluk became trapped in ice on its way to a rendezvous point with the other two ships.
Months later, the ship was crushed by the surrounding ice and the small crew and passengers struggled to survive for months in the punishing arctic weather. Nearly half of the people onboard would not survive.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Buddy Levy, journalist and author of eight books, the most recent one being, “Empire of Ice and Stone: The disastrous and Heroic Voyage of the Karluk”.
Buddy was also the co-star for twenty five episodes on History Channel’s hit docuseries, “Brad Meltzer’s Decoded”.
Buddy will tell stories of the ill-fated Karluk and of the bravery and determination of its’ passengers and crew. He will also talk about the distinctly different personalities and leadership qualities of Stefansson and Bartlett.

S6 Ep18 Jim Thorpe: Legendary American Athlete
Jim Thorpe was born in the late 1880’s in what was then known as Indian Territory, now the state of Oklahoma. Thorpe who was predominantly of Native American descent, was a member of the Sac & Fox Nation. However, his father who had some European blood, felt that it was important for his son to attend school and assimilate into the English speaking culture.
After a series of tragic personal losses, including the death of his twin brother and his mother, Thorpe was eventually sent away to school by his father who wished for him to get an education. Despite his hopes of staying home and his general dislike for school, Thorpe eventually traveled to Pennsylvania, where he attended the Carlisle Indian School. It was there that his extraordinary athletic ability was first noticed.
Thorpe went on to excel in many different sports, including baseball, football and track & field. He attended the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden where he won two gold medals for the pentathlon and the decathlon, becoming the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States. Sadly, those medals were later rescinded when it was discovered that Thorpe had briefly played for a minor league baseball team for a small amount of money. In 1982, almost thirty years after his death, his gold medals were restored to his family. However, Thorpe remained listed in the record books as co-winner of those events.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Jim Kossakowski, the great grandson of Jim Thorpe. Jim will share stories from the life of one of America’s most iconic athletes and will also share what it is like to be descended from the legendary Jim Thorpe.

Please note that in July of 2022, shortly after the recording of this interview, The International Olympic Committee restored Jim Thorpe’s name as the sole gold medal winner of pentathlon and decathlon events at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.

What do you do when adversity strikes? Do you see obstacles that can’t be overcome or do you see opportunity and the possibility to transform yourself?
In this episode of Your History Your Story our guest is Robert Pardi. Robert is a transformational life coach, speaker and author of “Possibility in Action - A Journey to an Intentional Life”.
Robert grew up with an alcoholic father and was forced at a young age to develop coping techniques in order to deal with his difficult home life. In college, Robert met Desiree, his future wife. They got married and looked forward to an exciting life together. Little did they know that just prior to Desiree’s thirty first birthday, while she was studying to become a doctor, she would be diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Robert walked hand in hand with her throughout her journey and their love for each other continued to grow. They had an action plan that compelled them to make the most out of every day they had together. Sadly, despite her strong will to live and immeasurable courage, Desiree lost her battle with cancer and Robert was devastated.
Trying to find his way again, he leaned into some of the coping skills he developed as a child and the experiences he had during his wife’s illness to transform his life. He eventually moved from New York to Italy where he has become an amazing life coach, using his passion and compassion to help others live their best life. Robert has a special way of connecting with those he encounters.

As many may know, the United States of America will be celebrating its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. With that important date on the horizon, some will pause to think about the American Revolution and the great sacrifices made to gain our independence from Great Britain.
New Jersey, one of the original thirteen colonies, played a critical role during the Revolutionary War as many battles were fought there and George Washington spent more time there, than anywhere else.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with author and website creator, Al Frazza. Al is a lifelong resident of New Jersey whose passion for history prompted him to take a seven and a half year journey to research, photograph and document nearly 650 historic Revolutionary War sites throughout his state.
Al then used his research to create a comprehensive website called (RevolutionaryWarNewJersey.com), which provides historians, teachers and history buffs with a treasure trove of information.
Al, who authored the book, “State of Revolution, My Seven-and-a-Half-Year Journey Through Revolutionary War New Jersey”, will share his experiences of traveling to all of New Jersey’s twenty one counties to complete the research for his amazing website.

S6 Ep13 The Grave Trippers
As children, brothers Robert and Vincent Gardino began to take an interest in historical people when their dad started bringing home autographs of famous patrons at the New York City restaurant where he worked as a waiter.
The two boys then took it upon themselves to expand their collection of autographs by using resources at the public library to obtain addresses of other notable people such as politicians, celebrities and sports figures. They wrote to these people and to their surprise, many responded and their collection grew.
This early interest in collecting autographs prompted the Gardino brothers as adults to connect with historical figures by searching for their final resting places, so they could pay their respects and connect with history.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Robert and Vincent Gardino about their recently released book, “Grave Trippers, History at our Feet” which documents the stories of noted historical personalities, along with some fun facts and specific directions to their final resting places so that others can be “grave trippers” too!

Halloween is almost here! It is time to put on our sweatshirts, admire the multi-colored leaves falling from the trees and spy the array of skeletons, orange lights and Jack-o-lanterns adorning our neighborhoods. It’s also the best time of year to settle in on a chilly evening with a glass of hot cider and a bowl of popcorn to watch a scary movie starring the classic horror movie icon, Vincent Price.
Vincent, who died in 1993 at the age of 82, was well known for his roles in horror films, yet his brilliant and successful six decade career also included classic movies of other genres and roles on stage, television and radio. Vincent was also known for doing voice over work which included Michael Jackson’s hit, Thriller.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Vincent’s grandson, Jody Price. Jody will share stories about his grandfather’s life, acting career, his passion for art, art history and cooking. He will also share that in contrast to the many villainous characters his grandfather portrayed, he was a kind and compassionate man with a generous spirit.

Incorporated in 1838, Brooklyn, New York’s Green-Wood Cemetery is the final resting place of almost 600,000 people!
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006, Green-Wood contains stunning natural beauty and landscape design, unique architectural styles and a museum that displays artwork, maps and other interesting objects that belonged to some of the people interred at Green-Wood. Today the cemetery offers a variety of tours, concerts and other programs that provide a cultural and historical experience for its’ visitors.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Green-Wood’s historian, Jeff Richman, author of “Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery - New York’s Buried Treasure”. October 29, 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the day Superstorm Sandy came ashore in New Jersey. This epic storm, which was the greatest natural disaster in the history of the Jersey Shore brought with it high winds, heavy rain and a tidal surge causing loss of life, power outages and widespread destruction of property. One of the hardest hit areas along the coast was Long Beach Island in Ocean County.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Scott Mazzella, author of the national award winning book, “Surviving Sandy: Long Beach Island and the Greatest Storm of the Jersey Shore”.
Scott, a New Jersey resident, educator, former reporter and passionate weather buff will tell us about Superstorm Sandy from its’ early formation to its’ devastating landfall. He will also be sharing stories about Long Beach Islanders who survived the storm and worked tirelessly together with volunteers from around the country, to rebuild and restore the Jersey Shore.

In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Enrique “Ric” Prado, author of New York Times bestselling book “Black Ops, The Life of a Shadow Warrior”.
Ric, who was born to a middle class family in Cuba, was ten years old when his family sent him alone to the United States to save him from the abuses of Fidel Castro’s Marxist regime. Ric’s parents, whose property and business had been confiscated by that regime, would not be able to join their son in the US for eights long months, during which time Ric lived in a Colorado orphanage. Once reunited with his parents, he and his family quickly embraced the US as their new home, settling in Florida.
Ric will be sharing many exciting stories about his life and twenty four year career with the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), where he operated in the shadows at various locations in the world during the Cold War Era and the Age of Terrorism. Ric eventually achieved the rank of CIA Counterterrorist Chief of Operations, the CIA equivalent of a two star general. This is Ric’s story of incredible dedication, patriotism and courage.

In the summer of 1960, nineteen year old Sandy Greenberg, the son of a Buffalo, NY junk dealer, was home on break between his sophomore and junior years at Columbia University. Sandy, who loved sports, also loved learning and was very excited about his future and the possibilities that lay ahead. However, while pitching in a baseball game that summer, Sandy’s vision suddenly became cloudy, requiring him to leave the game after almost hitting a batter. Sandy did not know it then, but eye disease and a misdiagnosis would soon lead to complete blindness.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with author, entrepreneur, investor and inventor, Sandy Greenberg. Sandy will talk about his book, “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend”, which tells his story of how he went from despair to a life of hope, love and gratitude. Sandy will share stories about special people in his life who helped him and believed in him, especially his wife Sue and his college roommate and dear friend, Art Garfunkel, who he affectionately calls “Arthur”.

Thankfully, The Bowery Mission which has been in existence since the 1870’s continues to serve the hungry and homeless in New York, providing critical services to meet their needs and help transform their lives.
In the year, 2021, in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic, The Bowery Mission provided 255,000 meals, 54,000 nights of shelter, 30,000 emergency showers and 20,000 articles of clothing to New Yorkers experiencing homelessness, hunger and other crises.

How can YOU brighten someone else’s day? It may be a thoughtful gesture, a kind word or simply sharing a smile.
Our guest on this episode of Your History Your Story is Michael Ray, founder of Smile Project Louisville, an organization created to affect attitude and behaviors through smiling and small random acts of kindness.
Over the years Michael’s life had been affected by some tragic and difficult times such as the death of a child, job insecurity, divorce and the challenges of parenting a special needs daughter. One day in 2018 while Michael was feeling particularly down about the possibility of losing his job, he went to a Wendy’s drive through to get some lunch. While giving his order, he encountered an employee whose smile and kind demeanor lifted his spirits greatly. That moment, coupled with the joy he had always felt from the smiles of his precious, non-verbal daughter, changed the course of Michael’s life.
Since its’ founding, Smile Project Louisville has gained momentum. Today, you can find pictures and videos of Michael’s acts of kindness toward total strangers on social media. He has followers from all over the world and has also ventured into public speaking with the hope of touching more and more lives with smiles and love.

Harris was captured by Japanese forces in May, 1942 during the Battle of Corregidor (Philippines) but soon escaped, only to endure hardships including an eight hour swim in a shark infested bay, shipwrecks, guerilla fighting, re-capture and two years imprisonment in a Japanese POW camp, where he suffered beatings, torture and starvation. Bill Harris was a true American hero and this is his story.
