ABOUT ZAYNAB:
Hi, I'm Zaynab, an eighteen year old aspiring Operations and Supply Chain Manager. Whilst currently residing in Toronto, I hail from Indo-Guyanese descent and was the 2021 CSEC Top Performer. Having been raised with an abundance of sunshine and nature, as comes with living in a semi-urban semi-rural community, agriculture has a special place in my heart because of it's ability to let one lose one's troubles temporarily in place of sheer awe. Undoubtedly, there are a wide variety of sectors one could volunteer with, but YFS stood out to me. Why? Although food is one of the basic necessities, in our contemporary world, and especially in urban cities like Toronto, we don't often think much of where our food comes from and the complicated systems that are constantly being optimized to ensure we have adequate sources of nutrition. At YFS, I have been able to broaden my perspective of what our food systems truly entail. Often, you may just think of farmers and truck drivers in relation to agriculture, but it really is a much more vast field than you can imagine, with very niche careers that are just as needed. Paul, my interviewee, is just one such example, and I truly hope that if nothing else, you gain a sincere appreciation for the 'behind the scenes' of your fruit salad. Added to a much needed opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and practice my interpersonal skills, the YFS team is absolutely amazing and supportive, and they are half of the reason why I am here.

Noah & Kurtis - Plant Agriculture
"What Do You Bring to the Table?" is a series made by youth, for youth, that aims to explore the many, many career paths available within our Canadian food systems. By interviewing industry leaders across the country, we get a first hand look at the various career opportunities available to the next generation, with a particular focus on equity and sustainability. We want to thank the Gay Lea Foundation and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generosity in supporting this project.
