#14: Senator Kim Pate

In this episode, Podcast Director Sophie Yang speaks with Ontario Senator Kim Pate! Senator Pate is an alumnus of Dalhousie University Law School, and was previously an executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. She was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2014 for her work and advocacy on behalf of women who are marginalized, victimized, or incarcerated, and for her research on women in the criminal justice system. In 2016, she was nominated to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau where she has sat as an independent senator for Ontario ever since. In this episode, YPA Chief of Podcast Development Krystal Chan speaks with Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. Paul, who was born and raised in Toronto, worked in civic engagement, international affairs, and civil rights law before entering politics. She founded the Canadian Centre for Political Leadership, co-founded the Barcelona International Public Policy Hub, and worked in positions with the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court and with Canada's Mission to the European Union. Annamie Paul is now the first black Canadian and first Jewish woman to be elected leader of a federal party in Canada. In this episode, our Chief of Podcast Development Krystal Chan speaks with Ontario Liberal MP Karina Gould, who represents the riding of Burlington and serves in Prime Minister Trudeau's cabinet as Minister as International Development. Before entering politics, she worked with the Organization of American States in Washington D.C. as a consultant in the Migration and Development Program. She holds degrees from McGill University in Montreal and Oxford University in London. She was first elected to parliament in 2015 and served as Minister of Democratic Institutions before taking on the International Development portfolio after the 2019 election. Her nomination by Prime Minister Trudeau as Minister of Democratic Institutions in 2017 made her the youngest female cabinet minister in Canadian history.
