Leeds United’s hopes of clinching a top-two automatic spot took a hit at the weekend with a home defeat to Blackburn Rovers – but results elsewhere meant they didn’t lose too much ground on automatic promotion rivals Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

At the other end of the Championship table, Sheffield Wednesday are still in the fight to avoid the drop, both they and Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town sitting just a point from safety with three games remaining.

Sheffield United remain near-certainties to go straight back down to the Championship but it seems they are going down fighting, putting in a battling performance in a 3-1 defeat at Liverpool before snatching a point in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea. 

Huddersfield took one step forward and two steps back, following up a 1-0 win over Millwall with a 4-1 hammering on the road at Preston – do they have what it takes to beat the drop? Likewise Sheffield Wednesday who fought back to grab a 2-2 draw against Norwich City following on from a 2-0 win over QPR – do they have what it takes to beat the drop?

And, at the other end of the Championship table, Leeds United fell to their first league defeat of 2024 at possibly the worse time, their chances of automatic promotion not helped much later in the week when they were held 0-0 at home by Sunderland. They start by looking at Leeds United enhancing their survival with their 2-1 home win over fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, just days after being beaten 4-1 at Premier League leaders Arsenal.

In the Championship, Sheffield United put some daylight between themselves and third-placed Middlesbrough in the race for second while, down the bottom, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town received a timely boost in the shape of fellow strugglers Reading being docked six points for financial reasons. Elsewhere, is Hull City boss Liam Rosenior now looking firmly ahead to next season with the Tigers involved in neither the promotion race or the battle to beat the drop?

On this week’s show, The Yorkshire Post’s football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to reflect on England’s promising start to their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
