Murder For Feminism: The Woman King Spoiler-Free Review
Murder For Feminism: The Woman King Spoiler-Free Review
Season 2 Episode 32 This is a topic I am still thinking about the nuts and bolts. To be clear, fictional murder, aka death as a significant storytelling tool and violence as a symbolic device in fiction, is what intrigues me, more so because of the project I am working on but also in general. Film: The Woman King (2022) Youtube video referenced: Rape Revenge & Promising Young Woman| Realism vs Catharsis - Princess Weekes  I spoil nothing in the film and in the youtube video. I do share my general thoughts and reference some themes and media it reminds me of though. Twitter: YsaPlatform

Evangelical Christianity: It's role in Modern Conservatism and the Fears that push the movement
Season 2, Episode 31: As a current Christian, I chose to refer to God as the Christian God in order to respect other people's beliefs. I know that it can be difficult to navigate these waters as unfortunately my religion has been utilized violently and negatively against other beliefs, nations and people. I try my best to remain respectful, sympathetic and understanding of everyone's beliefs. I hope that this episode provides some perspective. I recorded this on Sunday, 27th November 2022. The book is called: "The Paradigm: The Ancient Blueprint That Holds the Mystery of Our Times" by Jonathan Cahn. You have been warned. The Dark History of Thanksgiving: Racism and Culture - Remember Indigenous People
The Dark History of Thanksgiving: Racism and Culture - Remember Indigenous People
Season 2, Episode 30: Hey Everyone, today I talk about the American history of Thanksgiving and how its myth perpetrates racism. Remember that land treaties are not being protected. Remember that indigenous woman are still going missing and being murdered. Remember the history of US settler colonialism and eugenics. Please note, I laugh when I feel frustrated, awkward or I struggle to articulate myself. Tiktok creator mentioned in the video: @empathywins Tiktok creators I recommend: @Shina Nova @Kendra Rosychuk @Nativelovenotes Racist apartheid architect: P.W Botha South African literature genre: Plaasroman To clarify: the end of apartheid benefits white South Africans as they are no longer economically and socially excluded from the world, while still being able to maintain their wealth and not be tried for any apartheid crimes they or their relatives may have committed. Equality will always feel like oppression to people who are accustomed to privilege (paraphasing Franklin Leonard). Another article talking about the myth of Thanksgiving: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/thanksgiving-myth-and-what-we-should-be-teaching-kids-180973655/ Also this is not clear in the episode but Native Americans also experience disproportionate police killings and brutality and experience the highest rate of police killings. Something I wanted to add quickly but should be addressed more fully in a separate episode is gun culture and mass shootings could be another sign of and aspect of USA's sociopathic culture. America has the highest amount of serial killers in the world and in my brief search, I could not determine if this included colonizers as well, though I doubt it. For further reading: https://sites.psu.edu/michellebingertrclblog/2013/01/31/does-american-culture-breed-sociopaths/ "Carceal Capitalism" by Jackie Wang I also shared what I feel grateful for to not boast or contradict my message. Rather to share as a good practice of gratitude and to suggest that we shouldn't have to wait for this one holiday to express gratitude or eat good and if we must, we should at least spend some of the day recognizing Indigenous people. Thank you to Jas for introducing me to the American Indian Community House. If you are looking for somewhere to donate, here it is! Personal Instagram: zukiswa._ Twitter: YsaPlatform

What I wish I saw in WLW media as a MLM and WLW fan - a spontaneous recording on Nov 1st 2022.
I recorded this a while back and then just didn't post it. It was when I first arrived back in my dorm from covid isolation so the First of November 2022 (Nov 1). Fun Fact about me: sometimes I can't decide how I want to write out the date so in my diary, it will be written out in multiple ways on top of the page. Hence why I had to rewrite 1/11/2022 (I did it again :). BTW it's written as day/month/year in case you get confused). Enjoy my mumbling. This is not a traditional episode. I will probably talk about sex so warning there. Till next time.

Bodies Bodies Bodies, Scream and the fears of relating across generations
Season 2, Episode 27:  This one is a little disorganized and a little personal. I am mostly thinking through things in the movement. This discussion/unfolding of thought comes in response to the films Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) and Scream (1996). Btw for those curious, according to @jstoobs, the closest teen horror film to representing millennials is Jennifer's Body. Read more about that by checking out the link to the website down below. Three cool reviews/analyses that I reference (in no particular order): 1. compares both films, describes them as generation-defining and talks about the fear of lack of apathy vs the fear of lack of empathy - @jstoobs (on TikTok) 2. clarifies how the BBB film is actually a satirical whodunit that critiques and welcomes Gen Z - "Bodies Bodies Bodies - Movie Review" by Chris Stuckmann (on Youtube) 3. discusses how the film is clever in portraying its themes and how the plot twist helps cement those themes - " Bodies Bodies Bodies is Quietly Genius I Explained " by Karsten Runquist Twitter: @YsaPlatform Link to website: https://zukiswamhlongo00.wixsite.com/ysaplatform

Why Modern Day Feminism is Useless - An Ongoing Discussion
Why Modern Day Feminism is Useless - An Ongoing Discussion
S2 E22 Please note: Policing language should not be a cause to invalidate the point. The creator's main point is facts. Modern Day White feminism is ineffective because of choice feminism and undedicated united feminist action. Depp vs Heard should have sparked more feminist outrage. Shein and other fast fashion brands should have sparked more feminist anger. The Overturning of Roe V Wade should have had more protestors. Sex trafficking, child marriage, period poverty, medical injustice, attacks on cultural and  religious freedom, pink tax, the devaluing of a college education as woman becoming more educated, wage gap, unpaid labour, the devaluing of all things associated with and produced by woman, gender based violence, the commodification of women's bodies as a tool under capitalism and patriarchy, etc. So much more. These are all worth fighting for and more. It's important to stay focused. I suggest how we can redirect our focus. Bye South Africa, Beauty Pageants and Bafana Bafana
Bye South Africa! Happy Women's Month and well done to all the women who have made our country proud these past two months. I love being a woman and South African; I will miss my country. I'm heading to Hampshire College this American fall (this South African spring). I will still be heavily involved in South African discourse. The last film I watched was Inxeba: The Wound (I watched it on the 15th of August 2022) which is a beautiful South African film that I highly recommend and it will be discussed as my next film on this podcast. So long to my last day on South African soil for three months (before Christmas break). Wednesday 17th August 2022 (half of the episode filmed on Tuesday 16th August 2022). Season 2 Episode 20. Women's Day, WLW Media and WTF Bheki Cele!
Women's Day, WLW Media and WTF Bheki Cele!
S2 E19: Happy National Women's Day in South Africa! I, Zukiswa your host, talk about current issues women face in our nation, the history behind today, and WLW media not getting enough support. Lastly, what Minister Bheki Cele had to say regarding the victims (eight women) who were gang raped by a mine in Krugersdorp and how that reflects a lot of the current misogyny in South Africa that is expected to be excused. I just want to say that my opinions on the theme for Women's Day 2022 might be influenced by the fact that I have some mistrust for the government's ability to economically empower in the way that they may initially set out to do and that I am personally middle class/upper middle class. To be clear the theme is very important and relevant after the end of covid restrictions in South Africa. Plus it could be used as a tool to create more financial independence for women and provide relief to people who experience the intersectionality of womanhood and poverty. So although I'm sad to not see a theme addressing gender-based violence yet, this is not to take away from the fact that there are women who really need it in my country and that the government should be putting some focus and effort into that area even if they risk failing. Book Club: The Picture of Dorian Gray
Book Club: The Picture of Dorian Gray
S2, Ep 18: A new series! In addition to The Youth Speaks, Three part discussions and Film reviews, I shall be doing book club episodes where I analyse and discuss in depth a novel. I will also analyse a film adaptation of it if I so desire to. In this episode (episode 18, season 2), I will be discussing both the book (the well-established censored version), loosely mentioning the uncensored version and the 2009 Doran Gray adaptation starring Ben Barnes. Lastly, (SPOILER) I wanted to say that the end of this book truly left me gasping (because I also foolishly believed it would end the curse, not kill him) and I would rate the novel an 8/10 despite its horrible pacing because it is worth it at the end and pacing after Chapter 11 is such a breath of fresh air because the plot thickens and the rest of book becomes more plot heavy and better paced in still a meaningful way. The novel scratched the hard-to-reach parts of my brain and blew my mind. The only other book that has come close was Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, but that book merely touched my brain. The film gets a 6/10 though. Dorian was also a lot more heartless in the film without his internal dialogue, which didn't help. Also, I tried to speak more clearly this time while recording the episode so let me know if you hear an improvement. Recorded Wednesday, 3rd August 2022.

Happy Pride! Queer Recs, a Lesbian Apocalpus and a forecast of our genderless future
Happy Pride! Queer Recs, a Lesbian Apocalpus and a forecast of our genderless future
HEY EVERYONE! 14th Episode of Season 2. It's Pride Month in America! This will be overall a more of a lighthearted conversation with more political and societal theory tossed in the end. I was lucky enough to have some people to share pride with me this time, but if you are not as lucky as I am but you still have the ability to access LGBTQ content online, then I highly recommend engaging with as many safe spaces and content as possible, especially as positive representation can actually be comforting and healing, especially for us queer folk who often find our community and families outside of our birthplace. Recommendations I forgot to mention are "The Owl House", "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power", "Adventure Time" and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts". Feel free to search Children LGBTQ+ representation for more lighthearted, happy and friendly representation. Ooh and definitely read, " D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding". Such a good book. Thank you Hellen for the recommendation. I talk a little bit about Lesbophobia and the need for lesbian safe spaces. My tongue gets twisted as I work through my unfolding thoughts on people's reaction to gender specifically the idea of a gender trinary (and how that operates in POC cultures fairly well but could be corrupted in a capitalist western society, the way the need for women's liberation from economic oppression and abusive households was corrupted by eventually becoming tied to girl boss culture instead of the end of patriarchy and full liberation for all women, not just rich ones). Lastly, what would a genderless future look like? Hmm, share your thoughts on Twitter @YsaPlatform FUN FACT: The first Pride March was in October in South Africa and the first pride celebration took place in February in the UK. Nowadays both countries also commemorate the Stonewall Riots in addition to their original celebrations.

Personal and Political: Horror, Bodily Autonomy and Racism
For perhaps my most extended episode yet, I talk about nightmares, the horror genre, not taking opportunities and my (concerning??? anti-capitalist???) relationship with resting. Then how annoying it is when people peer pressure you into drinking and how to respond using clips from Shallon Lester's How to have Fun Sober video on Youtube. I praise the quirky, creative and timely written article and title by Vice (Entitled: "Republicans Just Voted Against Feeding the Baby They're Forcing You to Have"). A little bit about Dystopian teen media raised us a generation so I feel as though I view modern-day politics as a reflection of that. Finally, I dish my hot takes on racism in South Africa after a racist incident at Stellenbosch University, and rant about the public tendency to victim blame and seek undeserved forgiveness from victims who hold marginalised identities. Young Royal and Roe vs Wade
Young Royal and Roe vs Wade
E11: I review the Netflix Show Young Royals and rant about Roe v Wade. A point I didn't add but just remembered: Conservative people understand that the right to bodily autonomy supersedes other people's right to life when it comes down to masks, yet not when it comes down to abortion. Yet the benefits of abortion far exceed the benefits of not wearing a mask, not wearing a mask is more deadly (could lead to more deaths), and the disadvantages of wearing a mask are minimal, especially in comparison to the disadvantages of having a forced pregnancy/being forced to give birth, which can have devasting and life-altering effects. Bridgerton, White American Monolithic Culture and Fashion Nowadays
Bridgerton, White American Monolithic Culture and Fashion Nowadays
Season 2, Episode 8 Hey! I'm back with a 3 part episode where I discuss Bridgerton (specifically representation and how much I recommend the show), White American Monolithic Culture (Does it exist? Respectfully why or why not and how I think that's interesting) and Fashion Nowadays ( The way clothes are marketed and how trends changing so fast might impact our identity). I forgot to mention body padding but basically some models who are are "too big" for "regular" modelling but "too small" for plus size modelling may be asked to wear padding to appear bigger which might explain how the majority of plus-size models appear to maintain their sharp jawlines and bbl/hourglass bodies. Of course, there are naturally plus size hourglass-shaped models just as there are naturally skinny models. It doesn't change the fact that there are insidious methods done to get the look and shape we often see done and the often even the clothes that aren't accessories are pinned in the back and look horrible in person, hence the body of the model is really then being sold. Clothes that are not on a model and are flat on the ground will most like be most accurate but truthfully will not always gain the views/clicks. A Quick Dip into Cultural Appropriation
A Quick Dip into Cultural Appropriation
Season 2, Episode 4 (This is the 2nd year since starting Radio_SA-Y) A 25-minute episode talking about cultural appropriation. It is a very quick dip into the surface of the variety of issues that come with cultural appropriation. The key takeaways: 1. Do not profit off a cultural aesthetic, practice or any other aspect of a culture that is not yours 2. When including other cultures or taking influence, in order to actually appreciate it, make sure that you are not fetishising the culture or the people who belong to that culture, and make sure that you are not adding to stereotypes 3. Make sure that you credit that culture and fight for the rights of people to participate in their own culture. 4. Make sure to support more people of colour who belong to that culture than people who do not belong to that culture. 5. Lastly, always be aware of the cultural/spiritual significance of whatever you are participating in and listen when there are people of colour who tell you not to participate in something. @lavalarue (They spoke about how Carribian-British dress-style was appropriated by racists) @selflovebug (She spoke about Ancient Greece and Egypt) @sarahhiraki (She spoke about Kiss Me More - Cultural Apprection) @theadult (She spoke about Black people's subcultures and how Black hairstyles and outfits were demonised)

Dear Homophobes: Corrective Rape Actually Makes No Sense
Dear Homophobes: Corrective Rape Actually Makes No Sense
I had a lot of thoughts in my brain lately on this topic, here is my attempt to give voice to them. A genuinely calm explanation on why corrective rape is not just wrong, it actually does not make sense. This episode is calmer because I'm just sharing with you the conversation I have been having in my head lately and how it genuinely does not make sense. The Wikipedia definition I attempt to read: Corrective rape, also called curative[1] or homophobic rape,[2][3][4] is a hate crime in which one or more people are raped because of their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The common intended consequence of the rape, as seen by the perpetrator, is to turn the person heterosexual or to enforce conformity with gender stereotypes.[5][6][7] The term corrective rape was coined in South Africa after well-known cases of corrective rapes of lesbian women such as Eudy Simelane (who was also murdered in the same attack) and Zoliswa Nkonyana became public. Popularisation of the term has raised awareness and encouraged LGBT+ people in countries across the world to come forward with their own stories of being raped as punishment for or in an attempt to change their sexual orientation or gender identity.[8] Although some countries have laws protecting LGBT+ people, corrective rape is often overlooked.[9][10] Links for support for victims of GBV and Rape in South Africa: https://www.tears.co.za/ https://rapecrisis.org.za/ Link to podcast's Instagram: https://instagram.com/radio_say?utm_medium=copy_link Link to website: https://zukiswamhlongo00.wixsite.com/ysaplatform

FW De Klerk has died, and honestly I had no idea he was still alive
FW De Klerk has died, and honestly I had no idea he was still alive
FW De Klerk has died, and as a black South African I feel... conflicted. His legacy is a controversial one. He is often sanctified and idolised but hardly held accountable for the war crimes he committed. Is it fair to expect people of colour in South Africa to "sing kumbaya now" and forget about the past, when we as a nation have failed to address it appropriately to avoid hurting people's feelings? I understand why people may struggle to understand this perspective because for so long we as a nation have been focused on "comprising" instead of educating, uprooting and addressing the impact of oppression. My feelings this episode are intense, so buckle up and hear me out fully. "sing kumbaya now" is a reference to the play, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Metaphors by Mike Van Graan.  The tiktok videos I reacted to are by: bykaitlinrawson Follow the YSA platform: Website: https://zukiswamhlongo00.wixsite.com/ysaplatform Follow me: Twitter:  @IAlmondEyes
