Was a blessing to catch up with two of my Gideonite⚔🛡 uso's at the Talavou Hub where George & Ken (Gavet), their team and volunteers work tirelessly to help youth athletes with their education, lifeskills, goals/dreams and mindset. These guys are doing great things through their Pacific Rugby League Development program and it was a pleasure to see and hear firsthand what they are up to🙏🏼 #ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet #GuruofGainz #PacificRugbyLeagueDevelopment
Always a pleasure catching up with my good friend Ray. Even though I initially thought we were going to talk about everything to do with Weightlifting, we actually talked more about his background/upbringing in Tokoroa and dived deep into teaching, ADD, growth, entrepreneurship and more!
Ray is a great person to be around and to be associated with. His energy and passion is infectious in a way that you always come away from an interaction feeling uplifted and encouraged.
Tune in to learn more about a man who has many more levels to him than just Weightlifting and KFC;) #ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet #GuruofGainz #Weightlifting #FutureFocus
It was a pleasure to sit down and talk with the humble leader that is Mark Knight, especially since he doesn't usually do these type of things.
Mark is the owner of Knight Fitness in Brisbane Australia and he has been running his gym for 7-8 years with great success.
We talk about his background before getting into business, his upbringing in Manurewa (South Auckland), entrepreneurship, growth, development, leadership and much more!
Be sure to tune in and check it out. I learnt a lot and I'm sure you will too! #ZealousStateofMind #GuruofGainz #WesWesNet #KnightFitness
Was cool to connect with Christian after hearing him on my mates podcast, The Thought Plantation Podcast and seeing some of the impressive things he is up to online.
Becoming the first Polynesian Prime Minister of New Zealand is one of these things. No small feat to say the least but I think he can do it and is the right man for the job.
Christian is a very intelligent, thoughtful and vision focused man who wears many hats.
Most notably is his work as a professional musician, politician and businessman but Christian isn't limited to these things, he moves and adapts when or if needed.
Listen in for an insightful podcast with a man who is up to some big things and who I believe has the people's best interest at heart. #FreeTheLife #ZealousStateofMind
"STRENGTH IS BUILT OVER TIME" - Afaese Paea
It was a pleasure connecting with and learning from Strongman/Strongwoman Coach & Athlete Afaese Paea.
Afa has experience in many fields such as chess, snooker, rugby union, kick-boxing, BJJ and Powerlifting but his main passion is in Strongman competition/training. Afa has many records in the sport already and is still looking for ways to improve and grow stronger.
Afa is a keen learner, open minded and applies techniques and skills from various sports and disciplines.
I really enjoyed this chat with the philosophical big man who has a massive heart for not only helping people achieve their athletics endeavours but also teaches great life lessons such as patience, honour, hard work and much more!
Tune in for a great conversation with one of the best Strongman/Strongwoman Coaches & Athletes to ever come out of New Zealand!

"Everything will be ok" - Alex Porter
Had a blast catching up with my good friend from the CrossFit days.
Really enjoyed going deep and learning more about Alex and his journey, especially his new sport which he goes in-depth about how it works and why he got into it.
We covered many topics such as his early days as a teenager, how he got into martial arts, fitness and gym training before CrossFit and the famous competition that he, his former partner and CrossFit Auckland community used to run each year which brought in athletes from all over New Zealand because of it's quality and professionalism. We covered so much, yet there was so much more to go over. Definitely have to do it again sometime in the future!
Tune in for a fun and insightful chat with the one and only Alex Porter!.

My first podcast for 2021 is a banger and was with my first international guest after 60 episodes.
Juan Guadarrama is the owner of Sorta HQ in Hawthorne, (California), USA.
I came across Juan online through Deuce gym where he used to work and I was instantly impressed by his work ethic as a coach, all round professionalism and intensity as an athlete.
It was great to connect with Juan after following him for a while and an honour to have him on the podcast.
Juan is very intelligent, ambitious, committed and extremely hard working.
Tune in for a great chat about his journey so far - including how and why he started his business SORTASTRONG, his mindset around tough times, 4am daily starts and much more! #SortaStrong #ZealousStateofMind #GuruofGainz #WesWesNet
"I love people back to wellness" - Mike Huffam
You won't find many people as knowledgeable and passionate about a subject or thing as Mike is about kettlebells.
Not only is Mike an expert with kettlebells, he's been a personal trainer for over 23 years and he's constantly learning through courses, seminars and the like to be best he can be for his clients, family, friends and whoever he involves himself with.
I really enjoyed this episode and learnt A LOT being a big fan of the kettlebell and advocate as well.
For me, Mike is hands down the kettlebell practitioner I have come across and one of the best overall trainers/coaches out there.
I highly recommend Mike and what he is up on all levels.
You can check out what he is up to and stay up to date with his courses etc by visiting his website www.masterkettlebellacademy.com or by following his Instagram @masterkettlebellacademy
It was an absolute pleasure having Tony Laulu in the studio to share about his journey and vision for Digital Discipline.
In my opinion, Tony's work is some of the most important in the world at the moment, especially with the massive rise in depression and suicide globally.
Tony's research and experience make him one of the most knowledgeable people out there on the subject of social media and technology addiction.
Whether we like it or not, social media and technology is hear to stay and is unavoidable in today's day and age.
Listen in to raise your awareness on the psychological effects of social media/technology, tools that can help you use it in a more positive way and much more!

When you hear people talk about the "grind" they most likely aren't truly in "it", Robbie on the other hand, is one of the few that is 100% in the grind.
Robbie has many skills and a drive to achieve his goals like no other. He also has a big heart to help people in their journey whatever it may be.
I was really excited to catch up and learn from Robbie because he's always busy getting after life and doing so much.
Robbie talks about his upbringing, how being "short" has fuelled him, his come up story in Rugby League, an injury that led him to the bottle, how he got out of the hole and his latest pursuit in Men's Physique. The training, nutrition, discipline, mindset and much more!
Listen in as Robbie over delivers as per usual!
#ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet #GuruofGainz
Was a pleasure to talk with the larger than life character that is David Niethe.
Everytime I come into contact with David, I always come away energized and ready to take on the world! This interaction was no different and I'm sure all those who tune in will feel the same way.
If you are wanting to go to the next level in anything, David is your guy to help you get there. He's got a proven track record, helping people achieve their goals from all over the world, and for a numerous amount of years! Definitely a gamechanger for anyone. #ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet #GuruofGainz
Was awesome to have fellow WesWes Network member Adam Tafau on the podcast today to talk about how he came to committing to running 1000km which included the full 42km Auckland Marathon that he recently ran to raise awareness and to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation of NZ.
We also talked about mindset, his own podcast - The Success Recipe, common traits in successful people, how he overcame a devastating injury while playing Rugby overseas, lessons from study and travelling abroad and much more!
Adam is hardworking, humble and done a lot in his life so far.
Listen in as Adam opens up and shares some gems from his experiences!
What is the hardest thing you've ever done?
For me and my wife it was definitely having our two beautiful babies and getting married because they both have their many challenges but both are two of the best things we have ever experienced at the same time and a true blessing and privilege to have done so.
This short solo episode is a slightly different way of looking at things and an encouragement in that whatever hardships you have endured, are experiences that have strengthened and equipped you with whatever you need for the next phase/challenge in life that you will undertake.
"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
"Just start" is a common answer to the aspiring come up person who asks "what would you recommend if I wanted to achieve X, Y, or Z?
This weeks guest Fatima Lui (aka Tima Talks) is one of those go getters who "just starts" things, even if the full picture of what she wants to achieve isn't clear.
Had a blast connecting with Tima, seeing what makes her tick, hearing about some of her past projects, lessons learnt along the way and her vision for her new Marketing Communications Business Saturday Fly.
Tune in for an honest chat with the ever entertaining Fatima Lui. #ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet #GuruofGainz
Came away from this epsiode really encouraged and inspired, especially since we finshed our chat with a prayer.
Donald Tasi (Coach Dee) is one of those special people doing great things in the community and making a big impact in our youth through basketball and his love for the game.
We've been connected through basketball and both of our families who have deep roots in Avondale (Canal Rd) but it wasn't until we sat down for this chat that I got to know Coach Dee alot better and was blown away by his amazing testimony.
Not many people know their purpose, even less people live it out. Tune in for a great epsidoe with a man on mission! #ZealousStateofMind

@carlbuckhoops - Basketball Coach
I had seen some of Carl's impressive work online, so it was a pleasure to meet the man, hear in person about some of his come up story and how he has forged a strong mindset alongside his next level work ethic.
I had a great time connecting and learning from Carl as he shared some of his insights and philosophies about basketball🏀
After the episode, I felt inspired to get up a little earlier to put in some extra work and I'm sure you will too after tuning in. #ItsJustWork #GuruofGainz #ZealousStateofMind #WesWesNet
It was a real pleasure to talk with Tessa. When I first came across her, I thought she was just an athlete who studied abroad through her sport which is partly true and still impressive but I was only scratching the surface in terms of what Tessa is up to and who she is.
I don't know if I've met anyone who's achieved so many things at such a high level. Politician, athlete, entrepreneur, conservationist, brand ambassador and environmentalist are some of things she has done and hats she hats she has worn so far. It seems as though she's only getting started as well!
Tessa is very driven, hardworking, a deep thinker and really looking to make a positive impact in everything she does.
I really enjoyed this conversation and I'm sure you will too. Be sure to check it out and to let me know what you think. #ZealousStateofMind
Was a pleasure to sit down and talk with the hard working, humble and mindful Black Fern that is Niall William's.
Niall is not only doing great things on the field with her team but she's also making an impact off the field with her pay it forward attitude and big heart for others.
She's overcome alot so far in her career but she maintains an amazingingly positive attitude of gratitude despite the setbacks she has gone through over the years.
We cover many topics from her upbringing, touch career, how Peter Walter's the touch legend mentored her and much more!
Listen in for an insight into the mind o a true athlete and professional. #ZealousStateofMind
I had been looking forward to this episode for a while and it didn't disappoint. Learned alot from this open conversation and also had a bunch of fun.
Me and Ming's relationship goes along way back with both our families being connected for years through the club Richmond Rovers and the great game that is Rugby League.
I knew Ming had gotten into fitness after his League career and I had seen and heard about some of the awesome things he was doing with all those he worked with. I was really excited to pick his brain and to hear firsthand about his journey so far.
Ming is old school, he works hard, respects people, goes the extra mile but for me, what stood out most is his humility and adaptability.
Even though he's done well with his business and had many successes, he's still always looking to learn, grow and adapt where he needs to.
Tune in for a great chat with an ever evolving leader who walks the walk. #ZealousStateofMind
Whether you are into sales or not, it is something that is unavoidable for all of us. We are selling ourselves everyday at work, school and even when we are looking for friends or a partner. Funny way to look at it but it's the truth if you really think about.
Today's guest is member of the WesWes Network and has his own podcast called "The Pitch with Joey Nanai" where he shares some great bite size pieces of information about sales that he has learnt through his experiences along the way.
In this episode, we cover some of Joey's travels through Rugby, how he got into sales, the psychology of sales and much more!
Tune in for a great conversation about a skill we could all improve upon and be more aware of. Enjoy!:)
On this episode, my beautiful wife kindly joins me to keep my weekly episode a week streak going and to share about her experience with our new born baby Samara. She talks about FI'KA which is her creative mind and outlet. We learn about some of the projects/jobs she has done in the past and what she would like to do in the future. She also gives us bit of a background of her upbringing before answering my final few questions.
Listen in for an insight into a mother of two, daughter, sister, creative mind and the person who is responsible for helping to bring most of my ideas to life. Enjoy!:)

Ashleigh Karaitiana is a professional basketball player and NZ Tall Fern who played four years at the University of Hawaii.
Ashleigh and her partner Mathew are proud parents of their daughter Kalea.
It was really cool to connect with Ashleigh and hear about her story so far. She's accomplished so much in the world of basketball but she still has a lot of drive and aspirations in and outside of the game.
Ashleigh was born in NZ but played a lot of her rep youth basketball in Australia after moving there when she was was young, then deciding it was a better path for her developmentally and opportunity wise.
We covered many great topics but what stood out to me in this episode is her strong mentality, confidence and leadership skills.
I learned some great stuff from Ashleigh and really enjoyed this chat as I'm sure all who tune in will too!:)
I hope y'all enjoy. #ZealousStateofMind
EP14 - Guru of Gainz, Jan Zabawzki aka Yushu
Everyday with Garage Gym NZ Podcast - Stefan Smith
An eye-opening, hard hitting, right in the real feels, kind of conversation, with the one and only Jan Zabawski aka Yushu or better known as Guru of Gainz! We covered numerous topics.. Family, education, training, CrossFit, human nature, reading and faith. Which for him underpins everything he has been through and where he is heading, for himself, and his family. There is so much more to this man than meets the eye, and the sheer grit and determination to persevere, I take my hat off to you. Enjoy
Was good to finally touch base (even if it was on Zoom) and catch up with Darren. It had been so long since our last conversation.
Darren leads from the front and has seen and done a lot over the years. He was the first to open up a CrossFit affiliate here in NZ.
With all that experience and knowledge under his belt, I was really excited to pick his brain and see what his thoughts and perspective was with all the recent changes surrounding CrossFit, especially with Greg Glassman stepping down as CEO and with all the gym/fitness space going online all over the world.
Darren is one of the few Coaches/Leaders that I really respect, so it was great to talk with him about fulfillment, purpose, programming, movement mastery and fighting the good fight in terms of preaching training for life, longevity, health, vitality and long term sustainability. Especially since this way of thinking and style of training isn't always appealing to hard chargers and goes against a lot of what is popular at the moment with HIIT training, boot-camps, F45 and high volume/intensity CrossFit training.
Really enjoyed this chat and look forward doing it again (in person) sometime in the future after a training session and some food!
Hope y'all enjoy the episode too!:)
Intro: A Bronx Tale Commentary // Music: Common - Be (Intro)
Episode 9: Leadership, Well-being and Podcasting with Jan Zabawski
Today on the Thought Plantation Podcast, I have fellow Podcaster and fitness enthusiast Jan Zabawski share his story.
We discuss his time of running the Zealous Gym for 8 years, creating the Zealous brand, his experiences in leadership roles, thoughts on wellbeing/fitness and his transition into Podcasting. We had a great time discussing these topics and diving into more controversial points of view. So grab a spade, chuck on your gum boots and join us on the Thought Plantation Podcast!
Intro/Outro: Screems from the Old Plantation by King Kapisi
It was an honour to sit down and talk with the humble New Zealand Rugby League legend that is Ali Lauitiiti. Especially since his style of play was one I really admired growing up as a league fanatic.
This episode was a real special moment in my podcasting career as we sat at the front of his house in South Auckland drinking coffee and hot chocolate while talking about the ups and downs of his career, family, faith, life after footy and much more!
Listen in for a few laughs and lessons from the easy going former back rower as he transitions to life after a great footy career. #ZealousStateofMind
I've done alot of Bible studies and workshops over the years that I have been a Christian. Out of all the ones I've been to and participated in, the studies with AJ and his intimate group of keen learners, are one of the few that has stood out for me and helped me have a deeper understanding of the Word.
AJ is young but he's dedicated to his relationship with God and his Word. He's definitely one of the best teachers I've had the pleasure of studying with. Not only have I learnt alot but one of the things that really stood out for me was his in depth look into the scriptures without an angle of converting anyone but just focusing on what the scriptures say.
Really enjoyed hearing AJ's story, getting to know him better and excited about some of the projects he is working on!
It's been 7 weeks since my last update episode and since I could't quite tee up a time with a couple of my guests, I knew it was time to go solo, except this time I didn't go solo, my wife joined me after I asked her to jump on and fill in anything I may have missed or to add any extra thoughts.
In this episode, I share what I got up to over the school holidays, Coaching at CrossFit Infinite, basketball coaching with my Junior Girls Basketball team, our latest MOVE EVERYDAY apparel drop, getting ready for our second baby, a few things I have noticed and learned recently and a few other thoughts and opinions I have on certain topics that I have experienced recently. Tune in and enjoy!:) #WesWesNet #ZealousStateofMind
Was a pleasure to sit down and talk with Kelly who is a bundle of energy and good vibes only.
I learnt a lot in this episode about the benefits of growing up total immersion Maori, the importance of unconditional love and having a vision as parents but not only for our kids but our grand kids also.
Kelly is from what I can remember the only brown face I know who has said they come from a place of privileged and is absolutely happy at the same time.
Tune is for this unique conversation with many insights!
Was a pleasure to catch up and connect in person with the humble and hardworking NZ Weightlifter Isaac Lawgun. Especially since I had been following his career from afar online for a while.
Isaac has done a lot in his career so far but the Northland native is still very hungry and has some big goals that he is striving hard towards achieving.
You won't find many young 20 year olds who have the same sort of focus that Isaac does. While most people his age are out partying and living for the now, Isaac works 4 days a week (Fridays off for training) has his nutrition and training on point, all so he can put his best foot forward towards achieving his goals.
Was a good reminder to always keep setting goals and to work relentlessly towards them!
Haven't laughed this hard in a while and found myself buzzing for a while afterwards as we had so many similarities in our gym & business journeys. From having the same guys that inspired us both in the beginning, to living in the gym at a certain stage in the journey, to having the same struggles trying to develop athletes while looking after our own athletic endeavours and the general population who were the people keeping our doors open and lastly, both of us literally running our respective gyms for 8 years before moving onto the next phase of life.
Dave has a larger than life personality and an even BIGGER heart that impacted numerous amounts of people in the 8 years that he owned and operated Iron Will Training. Not only did Dave help people in their health and fitness journeys, but he also led the way, being one of the top competitors in Strongman and highly respected among his peers for a number of years, but the best is yet to come!
As one journey ends, another one begins! Stay tuned as Dave has some unfinished business to take care of and like many of the greats, he aint ducking or weaving;)
This is Dave's amazing story so far. Tune in to hear some great stories about what he and his wife were willing to do to make Iron Will Training the great place that it was! #NeverGiveUp #AllHeart #IronWill
With both of our families being connected through MAGS and the Metro Lions Football Club and having known Sam for a number of years now, it was good to sit down with him to catch up as I had known for a while that he had been doing some great work through his job at AUT as a Pacific Student Recruitment Officer and in the Niuean community. It was also really cool getting to know him a bit deeper and a privilege to hear some personal and families stories.
Ever since I first met Sam at school, he has been involved in leadership, whether it be in the school Niuean group or coaching the junior metro lions teams, he has been out there serving in some sort of capacity.
Sam is a great story teller and weaves humour into his tala which I really enjoyed.
He has a unique way of thinking about things and adapts with the times while keeping a strong hold onto his culture and beliefs.
Really enjoyed this talanoa, trip down memory lane and number of ah ha moments!
His attention to detail to the little things going on around him is somewhat of a gift in my opinion.
Great listen if you are into culture, story telling, leadership and vision!
Check it out!
Was really cool to connect with Theresa and pick her brain because it's not everyday that you get to talk with someone who is a World Champion in 2 different sports (Rugby Union and Sevens)
What stood out for me from the beginning as we started to talk was that she was onto it and none of her success was a fluke. Theresa is organised, hardworking, driven, very intentional with her decisions and what she trying to achieve. I guess you could say there's an element of luck in anyone's rise to the top in their chosen field but you have to give yourself every chance by doing your doing your due diligence for when opportunity arises and she did/does just that.
Although she's considered one of the more "older" players in both Rugby Union and Sevens, she only at the tender age of 25 and having achieved so much already, she shows a maturity beyond her years.
In this episode, Theresa talks about her purpose and how she tries to use her platform to affect the world in positive ways.
She also talks about her upbringing, growing up in a competitive family environment, starting out in many different sports, how she almost went down the Netball route, her Rugby and Sevens journey so far and much more!
Tune in and get behind what her and the Black Ferns are up to.
It's definitely something special! #BlackFerns
Really enjoyed chatting with Benny and getting to know him because as someone who grew up as a streetballer and a big fan of Basketball, Benny aka BJ is a legend from my era. Even though I didn't know BJ personally back then, I knew he was a rising star and someone to keep an eye out for.
In my last few years of high school at Mount Albert Grammar I remember him and his team giving us a few hidings that year including a season opener where we thought we would match it with them. His 2004 Avondale College team eventually went on to win the National Championship.
BJ has won and had success wherever he has played and shares some great insights on what it takes to win and the mindset you have to have to go to the next level. A big reason why I wanted him on the podcast.
Now that I work at Avondale College and knowing that his team was the last team to be in the mix for years, I was very grateful to have the big man on the podcast to share his story and to learn from him.
BJ shares his really well thought out and insightful views on racism.
There's a lot more to this charming Basketballer who is very self aware, straight up, intuitive and a lot more!
Tune in as it's definitely an episode you won't wanna miss!
Really enjoyed this episode with Arden McCarthy who loves a chat and loves the game Rugby League. He's done a lot in the game so far and the game has been good to him.
He's done a bunch of travel and made many life long friends through the game which most people might know about but what most people might not know about is his background and upbringing which I found very interesting and inspiring.
Arden is a great communicator, story teller, unapologetic himself and says things as they are which I admire and find refreshing each time I catch up with him.
Tune in as there's more to Arden than what you see and hear on the field!;)
Today's guest was another one of the Samoan Scientists (Amy Maslen-Miller) recommendations and friends.
Amy told me about a female only retreat that she had attended and spoke highly of the host Anatola, also saying she would be a great guest to have on my podcast sometime.
When I did some research and found out she was a feminist, I was hesitant in approaching her at first, but after talking with my wife and her encouraging me to step out in faith, approach my fear and go for it, I nervously sent her a message to see if she would be interested in talking with me. Anatola was most friendly and kindly accepted my offer.
Although we didn't have much in common, what we did have in common, respect and an openness to hear out each others beliefs and thoughts made for a really great conversation and forum for sharing about some big topics that affect us all.
I have seen some feminists speak online and talked with a few in person but it was only surface talk. In this episode, we dig deep on subjects I was scared to talk about publicly, making it the most uncomfortable and challenging podcast I have done so far.
I am grateful for my wife encouraging me to pursue Anatola as it was cool to connect with her and it definitely helped me grow and gain a different perspective on things. I hope she felt the same way and all who listen to this episode too.
Wherever you stand on the things we talk about, one thing stands out. You don't always have to agree on everything or have the same beliefs to be friends, hang out and get along.
Thanks again Anatola for coming on the show!:)
Really had a lot of fun connecting and getting to know Giovanni in my longest podcast that I have done so far.
We didn't click that we were already connected outside of the world of podcasts until we set up the day & time to do the podcast.
Giovanni like my previous guest Sophia was connected through my wife. Giovanni is a nurse and works out of the same building as my wife.
We both started off a bit slow being a bit nervous but once the nerves settled we were in our tangent zone covering many topics except the ones we were suppose to cover.
Giovanni has a vast array of interests and an insight into many different different topics which I really enjoyed hearing and talking about.
Giovanni and his Thought Plantation Podcast are up to some really good things especially in the Pacific community, but what makes him stand out is his unique insight into what's happening in the Tongan community here and abroad. Be sure to follow along and see what he is up to in his journey!
Thought Plantation Podcast - "Harvesting Perspective through Conversation"
When I had the Samoan Scientist aka Amy Maslen-Miller on as a guest just over 10 episode ago, we talked after the episode and I asked her if she had any friends from the science world who would also be good to interview. Sophia was the first person she recommended.
It was great to connect with Sophia and quickly find out that we were already connected in a way as my wife used to be a PA (Personal Assistant) for her mum who is a Clinical Psychologist.
Really enjoyed talking with Sophia and learning about her story and field of practice. She helped me understand and clarify a few questions that I had in mind and gave me and my listeners some great tips that anyone and everyone can instantly put into practice so that we can too help the environment and world that we all live in.
Sophia wears many hats from day to day. She is very driven, hard working, goal orientated and making a positive impact on the world in many ways.
Listen in as we could all learn a few things from Sophia!
Level 2 is here which means back to work tomorrow, so thought I would do bit of an update of my 7-8 weeks during lock down.
The highs, the lows, lessons learned, things I missed, my highlights and a rant about "IS IT ALL WORTH IT" as a trainer/coach. An incomplete thought at this stage but something I had been pondering for a while now. Probably a good discussion topic with a few other health and fitness enthusiasts.
Nothing too crazy in there which makes for some easy listening on your way back to work. Enjoy:) and as always, happy to receive some constructive feedback if you have any.
Kanah Andrews-Nahu is a NZ Weightlifter who has achieved a lot in the sport already and is only 19 years of age. The young weightlifter has been all over the world competing and has had many successes including a third place at the youth olympics, over 100 New Zealand records and gold in the youth, junior and senior U75kg weight divisions at the 2018 Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Noumea. She’s the first NZ Youth athlete to win a senior title at this competition.
I first met Kanah through her mum and family who joined our family CrossFit box Zealous CrossFit many years ago when she was only 11 or 12 years old. Her mum Shahn and aunty Anya were both strong athletes, so I wasn’t surprised when Kanah put up some impressive numbers when she started lifting.
There was definitely a specific moment that stood out for me when I thought to myself, “this kid was something special”, not just another strong maori/polynesian kid that came through our doors, she was on another level and it came to me after she front squatted 85kg with near perfect form that I was amazed and thought the skies the limit for this kid if she wants it.
After Kanah competed in her first competition at the age of 13 and broke 9 New Zealand records, she took weightlifting more seriously and joined the club Functional Strength where she would be coached by three time olympian Richie Patterson who have since then formed a great relationship on and off the platform.
Since Kanah moved on to fully pursue weightlifting we have bumped into each other at various places and I have supported her and her career from afar.
With this episode, I really enjoyed catching up with Kanah after randomly bumping into her and her mum at Kmart while I was shopping for some toys for my daughter. Over the years we have had some brief interactions but were usually cut short as we were both on the move, so this was a treat having no time frame of rush to be anywhere.
This seemingly random moment was not just a good opportunity to briefly catch up with her then and there but I also saw it as a good opportunity to invite her onto my podcast as she had never been on one before and because I knew she had accomplished a lot since I had properly chatted with her a few years ago.
I was impressed with Kanahs poise and how much she had grown over the years. She was so much more sure of herself and confident in her speech.
The whole conversation was really smooth, relaxed and a lot of fun joking with her as a young adult because our conversations were a bit different to when we first met.
Not only was it cool to hear about her weightlifting journey but it was also fun getting to know her better and hear about her life in general, how she’s juggling training, studying at University and everything else that comes with being a young student athlete.
In my opinion, Kanah is one of the best Weightlifters to ever come out of New Zealand and she's still only very young.
I believe in 10-15 years time we will all look back and see Kanah as someone who helped pioneer Weightlifting here in NZ and especially with our female lifters.
I will obviously continue to support her and her career from a far and wish her all the best in all her pursuits! Until next time, take care and Godbless!:)

A Time for Everything
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
