#Fire5atPhoenix Season 3 Episode 3

In seasons 1 and 2 of #Fire5atPhoenix the guests came on and asked 5 unseen questions on the selected topics.

In season 3 we are changing things up and letting you, the audience, ask the questions.

My son, Nassim Ladjimi, a professional basketballer and skills coach, will be joining me to help me answer your questions.

For this episode you asked us:

1. Can you have too many goals?

2. Maybe once you set goals, how to make sure they are progressed and consistently worked on and not just sat on a bit of paper?

3. What strategies can work when the initial motivation/commitment/enthusiasm for the goal starts to wane, or to stop the foot being taken off the gas when results are not happening?

4. What ideas do you have to help develop what you may feel is your ‘Life Purpose’ into a fulfilling career?

5. What do you think holds people back more - fear of failure - or fear of success?

Bonus Q:

Do you need people around you to be on board with your goals?

Let us know what you take away from the conversation, and if you have any questions.

Hans questions were:

How would you define successful change in the context of your work?

What are some of the most common barriers to change that you’ve seen?

What approach do you take when you encounter resistance to change in a client?

How do you approach helping someone to identify the change that they want to make?

What is your approach to working with someone who has experienced unexpected change?

My guest for this episode is Han Newman of 'Newman Sport Psychology'

Their research focuses on sport, exercise, and physical activity for marginalised populations - including, but not limited to, gender-diverse people and people with disabilities.

#Fire5atPhoenix #11 Talking about Mindset - Live with Danny Lloyd

1 Topic - Mindset

1 Guest - Danny Lloyd

5 Unseen Questions

All live!

Danny's Questions were:

1. How would you define a healthy mindset?

2. What do you think cultivates/leads to a healthy mindset?

3. Do you have one specific time where you called on/discovered that your mindset is healthy perhaps not realising it until later?

4. Do you have a motto (statement) that you live by that illustrates your own mindset?

5, Is there something you tell yourself/remind yourself of when things are tough?

My guest for this episode is Danny Lloyd.

Danny was a fit & healthy ex-rugby player turned bodybuilder when at age 22 it (his words) 'went a bit wrong'.

He had a small stroke & suffered kidney damage as a result of a rare autoimmune condition known as APS.

It was treated/managed for years until it went 'very wrong' many years later.

Danny collapsed at home as a result of a major stroke that triggered a catastrophic APS event. This led to kidney failure, adrenal gland failure & then brain infections.

He was treated & had residential rehab where he had to relearn everything... He didn’t lose any cognitive function throughout so was/is very aware of his new limitations.

It took at least a year of hard work to be able to function independently again.

Danny says that he realised he had actually gained more than he had lost because he now values so much more about life.

Danny says

"I live life to the best of my ability & simply aim to be better today than yesterday".

Both are incredible young Bristolians and the first 'young people' to guest on the #Fire5atPhoenix Podcast.

1 Guest - Charlie Beestone from CBNutrition

5 Unseen Questions

All live!

Charlie's questions were:

1.  Do you think Physical Health can be a stand-alone value, or do you think it is more important to have other values and understand that being physically healthy allows you to give your best to those other values?

2.  How do you bring your values into your awareness on a daily basis to ensure that your macro actions on a day-to-day basis are aligned to things you value, such as 'physical health'.

3. It's not uncommon for our values on physical health to differ from others.  What advice would you give to someone who wants to prioritise their physical health but might not get the support they want from friends and family?

4. How do you find the balance between knowing our values and making decisions that align with them, and then on the other side, encouraging trying new things, exploration, curiosity and all the things that we know are good for us as well?

Plus - How often do you reassess and reflect on your own values?

5.  We are often held back from better physical health by our own limiting beliefs. What can we do to remove those beliefs, or learn a different way of looking at things to change our behaviours?

Season 1 Finale!

Sally's questions were:

1.  You and I have both spent a lot of time both professionally and personally reflecting, identifying and understanding our values. I recently spoke to a friend with a very different lived experience who said ‘she would not have a clue where to start' – what advice would you give to someone wanting to start identifying and realising their values?

2  In your view – what are the pros and cons of having a clear understanding of your values, purpose and goals?

3.  As a parent – do you think that there is more emphasis on young people now to understand who they are, what they value and have intent about where they are going?

4.  Having courage denotes that there is an absence of fear but in my experience, it’s having the courage and accepting the presence of the fear… can you share your experiences of displaying courage despite fear?

5.  What are your top 5 tips for living a happy and healthy life which pivots on your values?

Vicky's questions were:

1. A few years ago I was in an unhappy relationship, I was a stay at home mum with 4 children. I knew I had to leave but I was scared of the changes I would have to make: Leaving the relationship, being on my own, working, putting children into school, moving cities. What would you have said to me if you had known me at that time?

2. When I was younger I used to feel complacent about life, I had a home, job, a child, everything was good. And then something happens in life to change it. How do I create a secure life whilst preparing for constant change?

3. How do we bring up our children to feel safe and secure and to trust the world when we know in reality everything can change for them ie the death of a parent or grandparent, divorce, moving houses or schools, friends moving away.

4.The world is moving at such a rapid pace, there is so much that I just do not recognize. How do we plan for our futures when we don't know what the future will look like?

5. My work is digital marketing, which is also changing all of the time. As a business owner. how do you deal with your own marketing and being seen and heard when there is so much change going on?

Jim's questions were:

1. For anyone trying to improve their mindset and wanting to develop some good habits in relation to this, have you got any simple suggestions to ease people in, maybe activities you’ve found have helped you or your clients, or inspiring books or even famous public figures that people can look into?

2. Do you have any tells or triggers that you use to catch yourself if you feel your mindset is starting to slip into a more negative space?

3. It may be assumed that a positive mindset is generally developed when someone is in a positive place, but speaking from my own experience, arguably my most positive and progressive mindsets have been shaped during the most difficult and negative times of my life. What’s your thoughts on the relationship between emotional or mental states and the mindset that one develops?

4. Do you think more needs to be done in businesses to support staff with mindset development, alongside the general job-related training and wellbeing support that they may receive?

5. For those who don’t know, which I’m sure most do, during your strength training days you were one of the UK and Europe’s strongest women, to finish, is there a positive story you can share about how your mindset made a difference on your performance, either during competition or just in training.

Kevin's questions were:

In the world of mental health training, the “frame of reference” model is a vital one to teach. It encourages people to understand that their entire portfolio of beliefs and values, when bundled together, create this “frame of reference” that we judge everyone and everything against.

1. Thinking back over your entire life, who would you say were the 3 people who had the biggest impact on your frame of reference becoming what it is?

2. Would you agree that we, as a society, don’t do enough to encourage people to understand and shape theirs, and if so, how could we change that?

3. If you could change any part of your own frame of reference, what would it be and how could you go about changing it? Or is it too late?

Unconscious bias has grabbed quite a few headlines this year, especially with the increased movement to tackle racial injustice. Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that we’re not necessarily aware that we have.

4. Are these biases truly unconscious, as in subconscious – or are we able to tap into them? If so, how?

5. If one of your listeners became aware of an unconscious bias that they have, what tips could you give to help them “do the right thing” despite this bias?

3.  Is there such a thing as a Plan 'A' goal and Plan 'B' goal that can be worked on at the same time or should you focus on Plan 'A'

4.  How important is it to set longer-term goals, especially in times of uncertainty?

Martin's questions were:

1. COVID has forced many of us to reassess our goals, what impact has it had on your ambitions?

2. Life isn’t always certain, but COVID has really reinforced that change is frequent and unpredictable (VUCA). How can we review our goals when there is so much uncertainty?

3. Reflection is a common term, but I’m not sure many people realise its value and how to reflect effectively. What does it mean to you and how do you approach it?

a. What advice can you give those who need some structure to improve their reflective practice?

4. There are so many internal and external pressures on us. How can we make sure that our reflection and goals come from a place of authenticity?

5. We’ve talked about reviewing our goals, reflecting, being authentic and creating the conditions to be our best. What’s the one piece of advice that’s central to doing all of that successfully?

Amanda's questions were:

1 Since I started at CHSW and I’m sure other fundraisers feel like there is more I can be doing and if I just do this one application, that could make the difference and be the one that is transformational. How would you suggest finding and ensuring more balance?

2 I feel like I have to say yes to every opportunity as everything could mean more awareness/more support for the charity, do you have any suggestions of how to overcome this?

3 What makes you angry?

4 Both done our fair share of networking and now virtual networking. Whether it’s online or in-person, I do find if I’ve had a bad day then I don’t feel like it but actually, it usually really helps to be around people – even if it is just on a screen. How do you stop your mood from impacting your work?

5 I used to worry about everything but the best piece of advice I ever had was about the circle of influence and circle of concern and I tell everyone about it! What would be your best piece of advice to share?

Jade's questions were:

1) Losing a job is a form of loss, how would you suggest someone manages that loss?

2) Self-esteem and identity are tied into who we are.  We spend so much time in work it is a big part of who we are and so to lose that is challenging. How do you stop job loss from impacting other areas of your identity and who you are?

3) I felt a lot of shame, for other people experiencing shame and struggling to ask for help, what advice would you give?

4) There are lots of stories on social media about people stepping back or taking lower-level jobs creating a lot of discussions - what are your thoughts on that?

5) There are also lots of stories of people being taken advantage of in the job market as a result of COVID19 what are your thoughts?

6) The news is really bleak around jobs, mental health and wellbeing. The general feeling is it is not recommended to physically see a doctor what suggestions or resources would you suggest to people who are feeling low and vulnerable that is easy to access?

Stuart's questions were:

1.  Men can generally be quite closed off when it comes to managing their emotions. If somebody wanted to start opening up, what would you recommend to help them go about it?

2.  When you are having a hard time, one of the things you can struggle with is not wanting to burden your partner and shoulder the weight yourself. Do you have any tips to get around that?

3.  Social Media can be a minefield on managing your emotions.  Do you have any tips on how people can manage that?

4.  Negative self-talk is often a problem for people and that can drive your emotions. What is the best way to deal with that and how can you try and make a more positive internal dialogue?

5. Loneliness is a big problem. We are more connected more than ever but people feel more alone. Have you got any suggestions on how people can manage it?

Julie's questions were:

1. Emotions and feelings are vitally important for human connection.  The lockdowns due to COVID19 is creating a myriad of emotions, what would be your top 3 pieces of advice to help people stay positive and keep emotions in check?

2. When have you felt the emotion of demotivation with your own business and how have you overcome and managed that?

3. I suffered from emotional detachment when I became a mum for the second time due to postnatal depression.  Why do you think some people choose to be unwilling to connect with others on an emotional level and what would be your advice if they are wanting to overcome this?

4. In my previous career working in the corporate world, I regularly encountered people who I felt did not manage their emotions well and came across to me as angry people. How would you advise someone who manages someone who appears angry and is not aware of the impact of their words and tone?

5. Men and women manage their emotions in different ways.  Women 'tend' to be open with their emotions and men 'tend' to keep their emotions in check or hide them. (Not 'all'). What would be your suggestion for a couple who cannot connect emotionally because they express and communicate their emotions differently and he is not showing the emotions that she wants to see?

Alek's questions were:

1. During your training years I can imagine your training was very intense which can put stress on the body. How did you ensure you were getting enough quality rest after and in between training sessions and what impact did it have, if any, on your recovery?

2. I know that some days require more energy than others, especially when we have a long day of client sessions, presentations etc. In preparation for those days do you tweak your bedtime routine the night before to make sure you feel rested and focused the next day? What do you do?

3. Lockdown related question - do you think that lockdown which threw us to work from home, not being able to go outside as much as we used to and using our living rooms as our new place of work impacts our ability to properly rest and relax?

4. Rest for the body and rest for the mind? Is it different? If so, should they go hand in hand or can we focus on one and ignore the other?

5. What would you say we can we do more of or less of to help us sleep better at night?
