This episode is the first of a series on Fordlandia, the rubber town Henry Ford tried to build in the Brazilian Amazon. In this episode, we look at Henry Ford the person and his early attempts at city building in the United States.

A teaser of the bonus episode available to Patreon patrons. In this episode, I talk about all of Henry Ford's attempts at city making prior to Fordlandia. I also get into some weird trivia I learned about him while researching for this episode.

The original plan for October's episode fell through, so it's a shorter one than usual. This episode jumps around from a little analysis of the biggest tech deal made in Miami in 2020, to a brief introduction to mortgage backed securities, to a reading series where we talk about the most pointless thing we've read so far. Kind of a mess all around, but that's just part of the chaotic and glamorous life of a podcaster.

It's one of the educational monologues, so there's lots of good information presented in my usual sleepy tone. I offer thoughts about the different strains of urban analysis and then actually give a sort of answer to what a city might be. You'll also hear some unsolicited movie recommendations, though none of them are deep cuts. Thanks to my Patreon supporters and to everyone who tunes in :)

In the first part of the episode, I introduce the question we'll be considering for the next few episodes - What is a city? In the second part, Madalyn and I dig into a bizarre appraisal of Miami's turn toward tech speculation and cryptocurrency.

In this episode, I interview Rosario-Maria Medina, the board president for Friends of Georgetown History, chair of the Georgetown Open Space Committee, and member of the King County International Airport Community Coalition. She is a dedicated volunteer in her neighborhood, Georgetown, the oldest and most polluted neighborhood in Seattle. We talk about her family's history in Georgetown, the issues facing the neighborhood, how the neighborhood is responding to those issues, and what Land Back means to their work. It's our first interview, and it's a good one! We talk with Amanda Lee, Field Director of The Heron's Nest Outdoor. The Heron's Nest is a Land Back project of the Duwamish Tribe in Seattle, Washington. They are restoring 3.5 acres of former industrial land to host community events, environmental and skills education, gardening, and many more things. Amanda and I talk about what it's like to do this work in a major metropolitan area and why Land Back is just as important in urban areas as in rural areas. Don't come for my audio quality on this episode. Amanda's is good and they're the important one here, so just focus on them!
