Too Fast for Conditions: Solving Trucking's Roll-over Dilemma
We are seeing a distressing increase in the number of truck rollover crashes these days. And while they are fewer in number, the number of runaway truck crashes on mountain grades remain a problem. What's behind the increase isn't completely clear, but many believe it's a lack of driver training and understanding of vehicle dynamics.
Brian Bullock, the founder Road-Aware Safety Systems, has been studying such crashes for years. He has a pretty good handle on the problem, and he's bringing a solution to the table. He joins HDT Equipment Editor Jim Park to discuss drivers' apparent lack of awareness of vehicle dynamics (and in some cases of proper and safe driving techniques), and to explain how to solve this problem.

Matt Horton, CEO of Voltera Power, talks to Jim Park on HDT Talks Trucking on how fleets can navigate these waters. Voltera develops charging facilities for light, medium and heavy vehicles. Horton says the upfront costs of developing charging facilities are sidelining some fleets. Others just don’t have the resources to wade through the bureaucratic swamp and get shovels in the ground. Horton discusses the challenges, and offers advice on how to get your BEV up and running as quickly as possible:
- Why are we pushing so hard to electrify right now?
- Why is infrastructure such a problem?
- Charging deserts
- Getting power to the wheels

Behind the News: One Man’s Fight to Address Challenges Facing FedEx Ground Contractors
Spencer Patton’s company is one of the largest FedEx Ground contractors in the United States — or it was, until his outspoken criticism of FedEx Ground led to the company canceling his contract and filing suit against another company he owns. HDT’s Deborah Lockridge talks to fellow fleet editor Chris Brown, who’s been covering the story and interviewed Patton, in this episode of the Behind the New segment of HDT Talks Trucking.

Are Your Brakes Ready for CVSA's Brake Safety Week?
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducts two major brake inspection initiatives each year, and year over year, the brake defect out-of-service rate remains about the same. Why aren’t we making progress in bringing that rate down?
Will Schaefer is the Director of Safety Programs at the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and he has some thoughts on why the OOS rate isn’t improving. It’s got little to do with the brakes themselves. Schaefer and HDT’s Jim Park dig into some of the some of the reasons behind the seemingly immovable brake defect out-of-service rate, including:
- cursory equipment inspections.
- technicians that don’t understand the brake safety regulations.
- poor driver training related to equipment inspections.
