NaNoWriMo, & What I’m Working On Now

I briefly discuss NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, which begins November 1), then talk about my current work in progress. Exploring the Possibilities of Ekphrastic Poetry

Exploring the Possibilities of Ekphrastic Poetry

Ekphrastic poetry includes vivid imagery about a work of art created by another artist. You may have read ekphrastic poems inspired by paintings or sculptures, but they can also be about music, dance, and other forms of art. I explain some reasons why ekphrastic poetry can be so appealing to readers and writers, and how these poems can get our creative juices flowing.

Talking with...WB Welch!

Talking with...WB Welch!

I recently had a great discussion with writer WB Welch about novellas, horror writing, poetry, and how writers can fit writing into a busy schedule and effectively use social media.

*****

About WB Welch: While she's spent most of her professional career in marketing and customer communications, WB has had many hobbies over the years, including photography and natural skin care and holistic remedies. She studied and became certified in personal training and corrective exercise, and she’s always been an adrenaline junkie. She’s been bungee jumping, skydiving, owned a Yamaha R1 for a time (before it was so woefully stollen), and she was getting pretty decent at staying on top of a skateboard before chronic illness slowed her down a little. She’s currently working as an email developer while writing in her free time. She often focuses on the darker side of human emotions, striving to write honest fiction with texture. Publishing credits include Blood Drops, The Last Letter, and Wet Water, as well as “Baby Muncher” in the 16th edition of Thrice Fiction. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Southern Methodist University.

U.S. Copyright Law, Continued: Fair Use

U.S. Copyright Law, Continued: Fair Use

I continue my examination of U.S. Copyright Law by focusing on fair use, which is described by the U.S. Copyright Office as "a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances."

An Intro to U.S. Copyright Law

An Intro to U.S. Copyright Law

It is extremely important that creators of original works (including writers!) know about copyright law. In this intro to U.S. copyright law, I provide examples of what's copyrightable and what isn't, describe the exclusive rights of copyright holders, explain copyright duration and public domain, and discuss registration, deposit, and notice of copyright.

The First Amendment, Continued: Defamation and Libel

The First Amendment, Continued: Defamation and Libel

To expand upon what I discussed in last week's episode, the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution places limitations on certain types of speech. Another type of speech that is not protected is defamation--in particular (for writers, anyway), libel. I discuss the elements needed for a defamation suit, distinguish between public and private figures, and explain the "actual malice" standard for libel set forth in the landmark 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan.

A First Look at the First Amendment

A First Look at the First Amendment

We've been hearing a lot lately about the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution...but let's face, it, the First Amendment is never not relevant, so all kinds of writers should have some understanding of what is and isn't protected under it. However, it is also frequently misunderstood, so in this episode, I provide basic information on the "freedom of speech" clause of the First Amendment in relation to several recent events.

Fanfic(tion): A First Look

Fanfic(tion): A First Look

I've been wanting to do an episode on fanfic since I started this podcast. My recent rediscovery of the long-gone (but not forgotten) series Carnivale made me realize I couldn't put it off any longer. However, this is just a quick look at the world of fanfic; lots more can be said, so I hope to explore this topic more in a future episode.

A (Mostly) Non-Partisan Look at Political Speechwriting

Many of us are going to be hearing more political speeches than usual these next few months. Although we will very likely disagree on the content of many of those speeches, if we focus on the craft of political speechwriting itself, we might be surprised to find that many political speeches have more things in common than we may previously have thought.
