Sound Education - Selkirk College TLC Podcast Ep 2: Intrinsic Motivation
Episode Description:
Are you wanting to create an engaged classroom, filled with motivated students? Have you tried to use marks as a motivator, and have found that the motivation only lasts as long as you keep rewarding the effort of learning? What would happen if you reduced the external motivator of a mark, and instead developed an assessment strategy that supported authentic motivation in students? Self-determination theory identifies three main elements to foster intrinsic motivation: autonomy in learning, relatedness, and competence. Let us explore these drivers for intrinsic motivation, and use them as a framework to create learning environments that engage students, build motivation and prepare learners for success.
