Although the now infamous Death Note screenshot turned out to be a parody, fansubs were both beloved and reviled by fans for decades as one of the few ways non-Japanese speaking viewers could access anime overseas. This week, Suzanne talks about how fansubs got their start in the US, the rise and fall of one of the biggest Bleach and Naruto fansub groups of the 2000s, and the simulcasts that replaced them.
