Petite Maman (2021)
We are officially in the summer doldrums of movie calendar, and, for Cinema Joes, that means finally paying off this years Oscar bet. As loyal listeners already know, every year Alex, Justin, and Noah try to guess who will win and who will lose at the Academy Awards. This year, Justin took home the top prize by guessing the most categories correctly, and that means we are watching a film of his choice. He was gracious enough to chose an excellent and, until recently, hard to see French film from last year called Petite Maman, directed by Portrait of a Lady on Fire director Céline Sciamma. In our Full Disclosure segment, we also discussed Prey (2022), Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn (2021), The Gray Man (2022), & Cherry (2021).

Boyhood (2014)
Welcome back to Cinema Joes! With Director Richard Linklater flashing back to the 1960's Apollo Space Program for his latest Netflix film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood earlier this month, we decided to flashback to a film near and dear to our own coming of age story, 2014’s Boyhood, starring Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, & Ethan Hawke. To help us take a look at the film, which took over a decade to make (spanning almost our entire collective childhood), is special guest and resident Coming-of-Age Film Expert Jeremy Lesser, last heard on our 2017 review of Lady Bird.
During this discussion we reflect on the innovative and historic nature of the discussion; the film’s insights into growing up, family, and the human condition; Linklater's evolving approach to the narrative, both thematically and aesthetically; and the ways in which the film comments on and touches elements of our own childhood. We also consider how different some of the aspects of the film play now, when we are nearly a decade older in our own lives.

2020 in Review, Part II
Franchise installments and Oscar hopefuls were nowhere to be found for most of 2020, and that left a ton of time to catch up on all those films we'd been putting off. In the second half of our 2020 retrospective, we skim the cream of the crop from our non-2020 film diaries to breakdown everything we caught up with. From our favorite classics, modern classics, and rewatches, to which actors and filmmakers from yesteryear we fell in love with while we were living in our quarantine bubbles, we share the many silver linings we encountered along the way that helped make 2020 just a tad more bearable.
