043: How to be more honest with yourself with Becca Ribbing

043: How to be more honest with yourself with Becca Ribbing

Becca Ribbing is the author of The Clarity Journal and has been a coach for over a decade. She's on a mission to help people break out of the cycles of uncertainty and struggle that hold them back. She helps women going back and forth with the big, seemingly endless question of what to do next—so they can stop going around in circles and finally figure out what they truly want and create the clarity and momentum they crave.

In today's episode we're talking about how to be more honest with yourself. Here are some of the questions that Becca helps answer for us!

  1. Why is it that sometimes it feels like self-care should make us happier but really it’s just a band aid because it’s not getting at why we feel depleted in the first place?
    1. What may be some of the reasons why we feel depleted?
    2. What are some of the “signs” that we’re not aligning with ways that self-care can actually help serve us?
  2. What are more effective ways that we can self-care? Can you describe for us what that looks like in a way that gives us energy instead of taking it away?
  3. How can we recognize when what we’re doing isn’t working anymore?
  4. What does it mean to “be more honest with yourself”? What does “being more honest with yourself” look like?
  5. How can we start facing things head on?

If you're ready to be honest with yourself, check out Becca's book "The Clarity Journal" on Amazon. Link below!

033: Adventures For Your Soul with Author Shannon Kaiser

Introducing Found Family Podcast's FIRST EVER Book Club Soul Chat With The Author!

Shannon Kaiser is the bestselling author of five books on the psychology of happiness and fulfillment, including the #1 bestseller, The Self-Love Experiment and Adventures for Your Soul and new book Joy Seeker. As an international life coach, speaker and retreat leader, she helps people trust and believe in themselves so they can live their highest potential. She's been named a top 100 Women to Watch in wellness by mindbodygreen and "your-go-to happiness booster" by Health magazine. Visit her website at playwiththeworld.com and follow on social media @ShannonKaiserWrites.

Shannon's book, "Adventures For Your Soul", helped save my life...literally. It was such an honor and privilege to speak directly with her...the author! Today's episode, we chat about:

1. Shannon's inspiration to write “Adventures For Your Soul”

2. What was holding her back before writing this book

3. Which chapter required the most vulnerability to write about & why

4. Which habit transformation impacted Shannon's life the most & why

5. Which chapter was her favorite to write & why

Some of my favorite quotes:

“We often settle because we think it is the best we can get, a behavior that is rooted in fear of the unknown or in feeling unworthy”

“One of the most common habits we fall into that can hinder our happiness is overthinking things and failing to act. This shows up in the form of over analyzing, being extremely critical, or not trusting our own feelings”

“If we didn’t feel embarrassment and shame, other people’s criticism of us or our own inner critic would have no power over us. Many of us stay stuck in self-shame, guilt, and embarrassment because we are worried about what other people will think”

“Emotions affect you because they are rooted in some past experience and will try to rule your choices by reminding you of the consequences you suffered, the mistakes and failures of your past. When we listen to our emotions, we stay stuck in our past”

“I was always blaming myself because I didn't love myself...I was always consumed with guilt and focused on trying to make things “right”...I did everything I could to please them, in the process losing more of myself every day. Blame is a cousin of fear. Fear keeps us from falling in love with our life…”

028: Understanding Narcissistic Personalities with Laurie Santos

028: Understanding Narcissistic Personalities with Laurie Santos

Laurie is a certified Life Coach and was formerly a federal probation officer with a Master in Justice and a degree in Cultural Anthropology. She is originally from California but has been an expat for 14 years. Through her Higher Self Letter Writing technique and customized guided visualizations and affirmations, Laurie shows you how you are your first home.

May is mental health awareness month. As many of us either know or have known a narcissist, this is a very important topic that I can't wait to share with you all! Today, Laurie and I dive deeper into understanding narcissistic personalities. But you might be asking, what is a narcissist?

You will learn:

  • Some of the signs of narcissists
  • What it's like living with a narcissistic parent, family member, or partner
  • The best ways to communicate with a narcissist
  • How we can cope and show ourselves love

Initially, narcissistic abuse starts with 'small jab' comments. Over time, they grow and behavior changes. You might experience passive aggressiveness and/or the silent treatment. Narcissists are like mind ninjas!

As Laurie shares, "they will start to diminish your self-esteem...and you don't really feel it straight away." You might think, as Laurie also shared, "what's wrong with me...?"

Mental abuse is still abuse. Please remember that your emotions and thoughts are valid and that there is NOTHING wrong with you. Narcissists prey on those who are empathetic and use it against them. Remember your inner power and use this episode to empower you to show yourself compassion, acceptance, and love

027: 5 Ways to Live Your Life Feeling Fulfilled

027: 5 Ways to Live Your Life Feeling Fulfilled

You want it so badly. The fit body, a partner in crime, to be InstaFamous and have the most glamorous feed, or to finally have the guts to start that business you've always dreamed of. You spend so much time future tripping - focusing on these things (and then some)... things that you don't have right now. So you get frustrated, you get angry, and you get discouraged.

How many hours a day do you spend future tripping?

How much energy do you consume every day saying mean things to yourself?

Stop searching for external things, soul sister. You will literally exhaust yourself mentally and physically to the point of panic attacks, increased anxiety, and depression. It's scary to search inward, but it's the answer. You gotta spend time with you first.

Before you listen to this episode, take 30 seconds to look at your reflection, either in a mirror or on your phone. Look at yourself in the eyes, smile, and say out loud, "I love you and I'm here for you. You're a resilient, strong, and incredible woman. I'm ready to meet you and I'm ready to become besties again."

1. Reflect on things that you're grateful for

2. Identify which human need you're trying to satisfy

3. Understand your self-love language

4. Cut yourself some slack, you're doing the best you can

5. Set boundaries for yourself

What are you waiting for? You have this power, too.

So go out there and live your most fulfilled life!

She is also obsessed with lifelong learning, facing life's truths, and the human potential! What you'll learn today: What does it mean to be emotionally aware How you can increase your emotional intelligence Self-awareness practices that can help you feel less anxious Transformational Quotes: "...emotional self awareness... [is] the degree to which you're in touch with your feelings and your emotions and are able to distinguish one emotion from another and understand why that emotion has resulted..." "...I tend to subscribe to the thinking that emotions are really a very initial response to our triggers. And I'm not talking about trauma triggers I'm talking about any trigger which is really just any response to anything...And then there's a sort of a feedback loop that last for about six seconds..." "... just get to being very present with yourself so that you can become aware of what it is that you're feeling and to recognize that you are not your feelings." "...dividing our emotional intelligence into four basic areas that is (1) self awareness, (2) self management, (3) social awareness and (4) social management. So really it's about becoming really aware of who we are and how we are in the world. How we feel inside, how we feel about ourselves [and] what we're doing about that, and then how we manage ourselves...it also looks at...what's going on outside of us in our environment." "...awareness helps us in the present moment, and that awareness is the best guide for what we can do in that moment and every moment forward." [during COVID-19] having this emotional awareness will strengthen our ability to not only communicate what our needs are...but also... to communicate this to others [in our households]..." [How can we manage our emotions] "...might be a little bit more nuance than managing emotions. I think it [is] a little bit more about managing what we do about our emotions because the emotions need to be allowed to be felt..." "Number one most important is that we have to allow ourselves the safe space to feel what we feel..." So you hear [that] and you shift and you do something for yourself because you must"

  • "...Out of the shame and the blame the guilt [tell yourself] 'I'm worthy of self soothing because I do want to reduce my stress [and] because I do want to increase my self confidence'. So then then you can actually start looking at... 'Where in my life can I can I offer myself [more love]?... [So I slow down and go through my personal story, I call it People's Personal Connection Stories is what I've trade market [it] as, and [asking people to go] through their life and seeing where they didn't feel worthy..."
  • "...[the starting place with self soothing] [is] not denying it [the Ego / the inner critic] It's not falsifying it, it's just accepting it and offering love to it..."

023: Living With Agoraphobia & Depression with Lindsay Musgrove

Lindsay Musgrove is a 29 years old, Peer Support Specialist, working part time at a local mental health authority. She is also a writer and enjoys philosophy. Lindsay wants to bring mental illness not just to the forefront, but also the knowledge of lesser well understood disorders that are often overlooked. She's a local artist and cat meme enthusiast.

What is agoraphobia?
What's it like living with agoraphobia?
How can I cope? What are ways that I can overcome?

These are some of the questions Lindsay and I dive into in today's episode!

“Is everybody looking at me? … [it's a] self-conscious fear … I felt like, everything was kinda, closing in… it was just very scary. From that point on, the anxiety got worse and I started to get a panic attack”

Lindsay shares, “...there is a step before facing your fears… having to find the ability to say, ‘Am I going to be able to do this?’ … everything is a process…”

We talked a lot about coping and acknowledgement: “...acknowledging that what you’re going through is valid, and acknowledging that what you’re experiencing has a name … with knowledge around how to overcome it … that’s where the power is. It’s not just knowing something...but doing something about it…you are now able to overcome, and find ways in which you can find that strength…”

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 4 REVALUE

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 4 REVALUE

“Lessons Learned from OCD”

Reframing to see the good that OCD has brought:

Lara put it this way: “Having OCD has made me a more intense, sensitive, and compassionate human being. I have been humbled by my disorder. It has built character even while tearing at my soul, my heart, and my self-esteem. It has enabled me to fight harder, to strive for the good and the truth inside of me. It has made me less critical and judge mental of others who suffer in their lives.”

How to Revalue:

  1. Realize that your obsessive thoughts and compulsive urge are not important and that you can deal with them. You’re in sense, devaluing those silly thoughts.
  2. Anticipate and Accept
Anticipate that the obsessive thought will occur hundreds of time a day and do not be surprised by them, even if they are violent and extremely upsetting.
Accept that your problem is a treatable medical condition.... accept that it exists despite yourself, not because of yourself
  3. Use progressive time delays that gradually increase longer than 15 minutes by breaking the task into manageable bits, reassessing the situation while you are still anxious
  4. Practice - over stress the importance of learning to make self-supportive statements as a regular part of doing the Four Steps.
  5. Victim to victor - As Karen in the book says, “get a loving buddy, a friend, or a family member to help you and encourage you. Get your life back. Your future is in your hands now.”

Recap:

Relabeling - “It’s all right, it’s just OCD”

Reattribute - it to a brain glitch

Refocus - on a constructive, enjoyable behavior

Revaluing - the meaning of your thoughts and urges

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 3 REFOCUS

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 3 REFOCUS

Step 3: Refocus
“Wishing Won’t Make It So”

This step helps tell you what to do when you are trying to overcome those urges to do the compulsive behavior. The key = do another behavior

Facts:
- The more you worry about trying to drive some foolish and bothersome idea from your mind, the less chance you’ll succeed
- A key principle in self-directed cognitive behavior therapy for OCD is this: it’s not how you feel, it’s what you do that counts
- The object is to pursue an activity for at least 15 minutes - this is the fifteen minute rule
- When you shift behavioral gears, you improve how your brain works
- As you learn to manage your anxiety, your powers of observation will improve you will develop a powerful mind, a mind that is sensitive to subtle changes and able to see the implications of those changes
- Just because your orbital cortex is stuck in gear and sending you false messages doesn’t mean you have to listen to it. That’s the important mind-brain discovery around which our UCLA team has structured the Four-Step program
- By practicing these step, you will be able to expose yourself for longer and longer periods to those terrible thoughts and urges without performing compulsive ritual in response to them
- There is a spiritual aspect to overcoming OCD, as well as a biological one (page 76)
- As you do few compulsive behaviors and pay less and less attention to your obsessive thoughts - work around the thoughts - those thoughts and urges will fade more and more quickly
- As human beings we have the capacity to observe our own behavior, to use our Impartial Spectator, to increase our mindful awareness, and to make thoughtful decisions about how we’re going to value and respond to the signals our brain is sending us

As a recap so far:
#1 Relabel - call it what it is, an obsession
#2 Reattribute - place the blame squarely where it belongs by reminding yourself, “it’s not me, it’s the OCD”
#3 Refocus - walk away from the sink without washing your hands and do something worthwhile that makes you happy

Reframe what OCD means to you. Here’s a positive way to look at it:
- People with OCD tend to be creative, sincere, and very intense
- You’re always figuring out exercise that will help you help yourself
- You have the power to change your behaviors. Learn how to start relying on yourself again

Relationship OCD:
- Just let your thoughts go by without trying to figure them out
- Trust and believe that you can manage your OCD, rather than allow it to manage you
- As you implement the Four Steps you will gain confidence that you can prevail (Like Anna in the book says)
- Shift and reframe your thoughts
- Remember that even if your obsessions and compulsions reappear they will never again have the same power over you (Like Karen says in the book)

Remember, you must be active. You must practice these steps

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 2 REATTRIBUTE

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 2 REATTRIBUTE

Brain Lock:

Step 2 - Reattribute
“Unlocking your brain”

Helps answer the question:
“why don’t these bothersome thoughts, urges, and behaviors go away?”

Information:
There is now strong scientific evidence that in OCD a part of your brain that works much like a gearshift in a car is not working properly. Your brain gets “stuck in gear”. This is why it’s hard for you to shift behaviors.
At UCLA they use the mind’s own power to actually change the chemistry in the brain. No neurosurgery needed. You can do it with your mind.
Using the Impartial Spectator you can distance yourself from your OCD by creating a gap or safety zone
Reattribute step intensifies the mindful-awareness process.
Reattribute helps us understanding why the thought is so strong and why it won’t go away is the key to increasing your willpower and enabling you to fight off the urge to check or wash
Changing your behavioral responses to the uncomfortable feelings and shifting to useful and constructive behaviors will, over time, make the broken gearshift become unstuck

Scientific facts:
The Orbital Cortex: the brain’s ‘error-detection circuit”. Here, thought and emotion combine. The orbital cortex can inform you that something is right or wrong

The Cingulate Gyrus: wired into your gut and heart-control centers, located at the center of the brain, the deepest part of the cortex. It’s responsible for giving you the feeling that something terrible is going to happen if you don’t act on your compulsions

** Conscious thought is required to control shifts from one behavior to another **

How to Reattribute:
Identify what the problem is — “this is my brain sending me a false message. I have a medical condition in which my brain does not adequately filter my thoughts and experiences, and I react inappropriately to things that I know make no sense. But if I change the way I react to the false message, I can make my brain work better, which will improve the bad thoughts and feelings”
Recognize — recognize that the feeling and discomfort is due to a biochemical imbalance in the brain
Acknowledge — acknowledge that your symptoms are not what they seem to be. You’re learning not to take them at face value
Keep the faith — trust that you have the strength to fight OCD. Forgive yourself for having these thoughts, because they’re not your thoughts, they’re false messages from the brain

Remember:
The acceptance that the painful obsessional thought is something that is beyond your capacity to remove - and that the thought is just OCD - enables you, the sufferer, to see yourself as a spirit being who can resist this unwanted intruder. It’s almost impossible to fight off an enemy as vicious as OCD if you are bogged down with feelings of self-hatred.

“It’s not how you feel but what you do that counts”

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 1 RELABEL

Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 1 RELABEL

“It’ not me, it’s my OCD”

The first step is to Relabel, and this helps answer the question:
What are those bothersome, intrusive thoughts?

Let's take a look at Carla, a beautician, referenced in this book (page 36-37):
"...became so obsessed with the idea that she was going to harm her infant daughter that she considered giving up for adoption this child she had wanted so much, for so long... Carla was at first misdiagnosed as having severe postpartum depression, would suffer panic attacks -- thoughts that she was going to kill the baby -- that were so severe that she couldn't even look at a knife or a pair of scissors. "It was like watching a movie where you almost put yourself into that screen and you think, 'Oh God, am I capable of committing such an act?' I was fighting this every day, all day.'" There was a long time when her OCD thoughts were so bad that she wanted to be committed, so bad that she thought of taking her own life to spare her daughter's life."

Here are the most important takeaways to remember from this chapter:

Call them what they are: obsessions and compulsions
- Make a conscious effort to stay grounded in reality
- Strive to avoid being tricked into thinking that the feeling is real. It’s not.
- Your thoughts and urges are symptoms of OCD, which is a medical disease
- The brain is sending false messages
- Stress heightens OCD anxieties
- Obsessions are not reality - they’re fears because you think, wow these thoughts seem so horrific and unbelievable — but remember, you have the power to control your responses to your thoughts
- Changing your behavior will change how your brain works
- The struggle isn’t to make the feeling go away, it’s not to give into the feeling — these steps will help you manage your fears because you can fight back

How to use RELABEL — AKA increasing your insight (knowing it’s OCD)
1. Keep in mind what they enemy really is, and call it what it really is. "It's not me, it's my OCD"
2. Talk back to your OCD
3. Anticipate - an important subset in Relabeling — say to yourself, "OK here comes my obsessive thought!"
4. Use mindful awareness — it requires you to consciously recognize and make a mental note of the unpleasant feeling and relabel it as an OCD symptom caused by a false message from the brain
5. Use your Impartial Spectator = the ability to stand outside of yourself and watch yourself in action = same mental action as the ancient Buddhist concept of mindful awareness
6. Accept — another important subset in Relabeling
7. Stay busy — activity is your friend, boredom is your enemy
8. Keep track of your progress — as you forget your symptoms on the road to recovery you may also forget your progress

REMEMBER:
- When you Relabel automatically it becomes a ritual in itself and no longer holds meaning. So remember to use mindful awareness

- AND the key to success is strengthening your Impartial Spectator - your ability to stand outside of yourself and observe your actions with mindful awareness

Brain Lock: Change Your Behavior, Change Your Brain (OCD Recovery)

Brain Lock: Change Your Behavior, Change Your Brain (OCD Recovery)

"If I don't pray enough, something bad is going to happen to me or my family" "Why did I just think about jumping in front of a train? Am I crazy? "Did I lock the door? What if I didn't lock the door? Omg, I didn't lock the door...did I?" OCD is an ugly monster. It's always hungry and never gets full. Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has been one of the greatest challenges and the greatest blessings in my life. There were days when I thought about taking my life, just to silence the noise in my head. There were days when I felt on top of the world because I found so much clarity in learning more about myself. There were days when I would spend at least 16 hours a day anxiously obsessing over the same question in my mind, for weeks. OCD attacked my confidence, my relationships, my faith, and my own self-image. When I was finally diagnosed, I felt a sense of relief because I was able to give all of this a name. I was able to better understand why I thought the way that I thought, and why I did the things that I did. And even though I, through the power of my own mind, overcame and recovered from Emetophobia and Scrupulosity, OCD has still shown up as Harm OCD and ROCD over the last few years. So I decided to pick up this book, Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD**, and learn more about OCD and discovery new ways of freeing myself. This episode talks about: - Explaining obsessions and compulsions - Defining the true meaning of mindfulness - What happens to the brain of someone with OCD Lessons you'll learn: How to combat OCD thoughts - Pay less attention to the unpleasant sensations to weaken the brain circuits associated with them - Accept the "bad" thought as an obstacle to overcome - Alter your behavior response and change your brain chemistry - Strengthen your ability to resist the urge to perform a compulsion **Please note: all references and direct quotes mentioned in this book club podcast episode are directly from Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior by Jeffrey M. Notes To Self Segment - 006: Learn HOW To Shift Your Mindset

Notes To Self Segment - 006: Learn HOW To Shift Your Mindset

This episode goes out to anyone who's been told to "just get over it" or "just think positive" but never told HOW.

Welcome to the 6th episode of "Notes To Self", a segment of Found Family Podcast. "Notes To Self" are literally notes that I've written to myself on the Notes app on my iPhone where I admit my worst fears, talk about my triggers, and word vomit limiting beliefs. I also share life-changing revelations on my recovery journey. Get ready to REAL talk, girl. Coz s*ht's about to get real!

Notes To Self on 1/28/2017:
"Focusing on the good things in your life and focusing on what you do have are the only keys to feeling happy. Find the good in everything, it changes your mood! Just freaked out about my finances, my job, my lack of a relationship. I never had all 3 areas a question mark in my head. By focusing on the future good and by acknowledging that this is temporary and that there are still good positive things going on right now, completely lifted the burden off my shoulders"

Lessons you'll learn today:
HOW to shift your mindset by,

  1. Remembering it's temporary
  2. You might not understand what you're going through right now but it'll make sense later
  3. What you focus on you will think about
  4. Asking yourself different questions, such as "What IS something that is good in this situation?" or "Who can I talk to right now?" or "Which resource can I turn to for guidance?"
  5. Giving yourself X amount of time to FREAK OUT and then refocus

Please let me know if any of these methods work for you! You can either tweet at me or send me a DM @ElisabethVibes or on @FoundFamilyPod

It was a painful, sometimes unbearable, process of separation that nearly ended in tragedy on a dark winter night in 2014. Tami wanted to break the cycle, she knew that it had to end here, with her. Notes To Self Segment - 004: How To Relieve Yourself From Expectations

Notes To Self Segment - 004: How To Relieve Yourself From Expectations

*CUE THE CIRCUS MUSIC*

Does your life feel like a scene from a movie? Or maybe a drama? Or maybe a thriller?

LIGHTS. CAMERA. ACTION!

We’re always in motion. We’re always “needing” to perform…to live up to someone’s expectation…to put on a show. Our attention spans are shrinking by the day. How can you possibly keep up?

Welcome to the 4th episode of “Notes To Self”, a segment of Found Family Podcast. “Notes To Self” are literally notes that I’ve written to myself on the Notes app on my iPhone where I admit my worst fears, talk about my triggers, and word vomit limiting beliefs as well as life-changing revelations on my recovery journey. Get ready to REAL talk, girl. Coz s**t’s about to get real.

Notes To Self on 1/2/2017:

The reason why I’m afraid to chase after my dreams is because there will be an expectation upon me to constantly perform. That thought terrifies me and makes me feel trapped. I don’t want to pursue them then, it’s like my inner child throwing a tantrum and spitefully doing the opposite or not doing anything at all. I don’t like when other people have or put pressure or expectation on me and since I did that to myself for so many years, it’s an overwhelming feeling of “maybe I shouldn’t try or I’ll always need to perform”.

DAY-YUM.

If you’re looking to find some peace of mind this holiday season, ESPECIALLY before the new year hits, then this is the episode for you, girl!

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Achievement vs. Perfectionism…what’s the difference?
  • Why it’s important to be open to changes
  • Understanding who’s setting these expectations
  • Learning what it is that YOU want, versus what someone else wants for you

Notes To Self Segment - 003: Uncertainty gives me anxiety

Notes To Self Segment - 003: Uncertainty gives me anxiety

Uncertainty gives me anxiety

MORE SPECIFICALLY, feeling uncertain about what other people are thinking gives me anxiety.

Does he like me?
Does she not want to be my friend anymore?
Does my boss think I suck at my job?

It's exhausting to be in a constant state of GUESS MODE.

Welcome to the 3rd episode of “Notes To Self”, a segment of Found Family Podcast. “Notes To Self” are literally notes that I’ve written to myself on the Notes app on my iPhone where I admit my worst fears, talk about my triggers, and word vomit limiting beliefs as well as life-changing revelations on my recovery journey. Get ready to REAL talk, girl. Coz shit’s about to get real.

Notes To Self on April 12, 2017 says:
"ask more questions to gather information about how and why someone is feeling a type of way. Don't assume. Don't fill in the blanks with the story you make up in your own mind. It'll drive you crazy"

Can I get an AY-MEN?!

Girl, keep reading.

Things we talk about today:

  • Simple steps to GAIN CLARITY
  • Why it's easier to make assumptions rather than ASKING
  • Managing anxiety in a POSITIVE and CONSTRUCTIVE way

Notes To Self Segment - 002: I’m Not Smart Enough

Notes To Self Segment - 002: I’m Not Smart Enough

You're afraid to take your first step
You feel like you can't make a difference
You feel like you're not as smart as others around you

Can you relate to any of these limiting beliefs?

Welcome to the 2nd episode of “Notes To Self”, a segment of Found Family Podcast.

Notes To Self on January 8, 2017 says:
"I don't have enough information to share with others. I don't have a PHD or a Masters or years of experience in this field. Holding me back that I don't know how to share or what's the right way to share or if I have enough background to share. Being overwhelmed with step 1. What is step 0? Then I get frustrated and overwhelmed to even begin a project that then I procrastinate and run away from myself and ignore it all"

(Yes, I recognize that note isn't proper grammar LOL)

Here are some of the things we'll soul chat about today:

  • Learning how to take your first step by sharing your own personal experiences
  • Pushing through the limiting belief of "not enough"
  • Recognizing that we have the ability to learn new things and that feeling "lack" in an area is only temporary

Notes To Self Segment - 001: I see myself as a burden to other people

Notes To Self Segment - 001: I see myself as a burden to other people

You feel like a burden.

You feel like you’re carrying heavy baggage into your relationship.

You feel like others around you don’t always want to be around you.

Can you relate to any of these limiting beliefs?

Welcome to the 1st episode of “Notes To Self”, a segment of Found Family Podcast.

The truth is, I want my boyfriend and my friends to think that “I have my shit together”. So, one of the Notes that I left myself on March 14th says this: “I see myself as a burden to other people. Anytime that I feel like the luggage I bring into the relationship is too heavy or not something that someone would want to “deal with” I get anxious. I think this is because my mom made me feel like a burden. Example: she’d buy me something and then make me feel like it was something that took away time and energy for her so I’d feel badly about it, even if I didn’t even want the thing to begin with”

Woof. That’s deep.

Why do you feel like you’re a burden?

What deeper issue is rooted under the layer of you feeling this way?

Here are some of the things we’ll soul chat about today:

  • Took away my power, took away my voice, took away my options
  • Luggage will inevitably be brought into your relationships. They key here is ACCEPTING the luggage and understanding that you have the power to “unpack” the luggage and “swap” things in the luggage.
  • Guilt and shame are LEARNED.
  • Self awareness is the most important THING in transformation

PS CORRECTION WHEN I GET TO THE PART ABOUT DINOSAURS (you’ll get it when you listen) Paleontology is the study of fossils, while archaeology is the study of human artifacts and remains.

How do you know if it's ROCD or if the person just isn't "the one"?
Is it "normal" to think about leaving your partner?

009: Intrusive Thoughts - have you ever thought of them in this way?

009: Intrusive Thoughts - have you ever thought of them in this way?

Do you struggle with intrusive thoughts?
Did you ever think that TRUST had anything to do with your intrusive thoughts?

After a simple and yet profound soul chat with my boyfriend, someone who does not struggle with OCD, I felt the lightbulb above my head! He shared with me the thoughts he has when, for example, he leaves our apartment. I asked him questions like, “Do you second guess if you locked it? Do you need to go back to see if it’s locked?”

You might be surprised to hear his reply!

This episode is short, sweet, and to the point. I hope it helps light the same bulb over your head as it did mine :)
