James Xplores The New Mutants

This week we'll be taking a break from our regular Xploration of the New Mutants as we review New Mutants the movie. I laughed, I cried... no I mean it I really cried... and I was confronted by unchecked racism. We’ll break it all down in this week’s episode.

In the 58th episode we’re x-ploring The New Mutants #51. And it turns out that Kitty Pryde was right, “Professor Xavier is a jerk!” In this quiet episode Claremont takes a moment to take stock and reset team. Have the students out grown their teacher? Dani thinks so... Xavier’s not so sure.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #50. We’re getting the band back together. An overwhelmed Illyana is discovered by Xavier and the crew of the Starjammer. The team also faces of in a final battle against Magus. Who do you think saves the day for the New Mutants?

In episode 56 we Xplore The New Mutants #49. Cannonball, Mirage, Cypher and Warlock have been dropped in an alternate future on Earth 87050. The team discover a mutant Utopia and human nightmare. While fight along side the rebellion to help the humanity survive they are forced to confront their one time friends and teammates.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #48. After Illyana attempted to return the team to their present timeline. Something goes wrong and the team is split up and scattered across time and space. Half of the team joins future adult versions of Cannonball and Mirage to do battle with Sentinels in a future similar to Days of Future Past.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #47. The New Mutants flee from Magus to limbo. It’s not long before Magus follows. The team teleport into the past and meet Robert the Bruce.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #46. The New Mutants are faced with the aftermath of the Mutant Massacre. Warlock father shows up and Illyana and Shan check on Leong and Nga.

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 45. The New Mutants attend a high school dance in Salem Center. Kitty Pryde is introduced to a new student (Larry Bodine) from Salem Center High. Larry has a secret, he’s a mutant. Can the New Mutants help Larry or will he be left to deal with his problems on his own?

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 44. Enter Legion! Legion trashes Muir Islands labs and heads for mainland Scotland. The New Mutants must stop Legions rampage while contending with Rahne’s past!

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 43. Roberto Da Costa (Sunspot) rejoins the team. The New Mutants discover Empath is to blame for the recent trauma suffered by Tom Corsie and Sharon Freelander. The team seek vengeance. Guest appearances by the Hellions. We also learn Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane) is on Muir Island with Mora Mctaggert.

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 42. In this one shot issue Sam, still reeling from recent events, returns home to visit his family. Sam questions his place among his classmates and school. He debates stay with his family. He also fears what his mother and siblings will think about his girlfriend Lila Cheney. Sam similar to Dani last issue is lost and looking for answers.

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 41. Dani faces off with death in an effort to save a the life of Pat Roberts a boy from her past. We xplore the role of diabetes in this story with a special guest.

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 40. Magneto fights the Avengers. The White Queen doesn’t have all the answers. And the New Mutants/Hellions transforms into one of friendly rivalry.

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 39. What happens when the New Mutants are paired with their rivals the Hellions? How could Magneto let this happen? And what is the White Queen playing at? Have a listen and we’ll find out together.

We’ll be Xploring the New Mutants #38. The New Mutants collectively are struggling since their run in with the Beyonder. Magneto seems unable to help... bemoans the fact he’s not Charles Xavier. The White Queen makes Magneto an offer that he has no choice but accept!

In this episode we Xplore the New Mutants 37, Power Pack 20, Secret Wars II 8 & 9. What happens when the New Mutants are confronted by the Beyonder?

Covers 4 issues. Uncanny X-men 201, Secret Wars II 5 and 7 and New Mutants 36. We see Sam and computer don’t get along. Beyonder takes young female mutants to space. Sunspot hates Magneto enough to run away. Illyana shops at Bloomingdales. While the rest of the team relaxes at the pool. The Beyonder as usual ruins everything. Illyana must choose between saving Kitty Pryde or being free of the evil which corrupts her soul.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #35. The New Mutants return to the school to discover the Master of Magnetism has become the headmaster. As Magneto try’s to come to terms in his new role the students each struggle with how to accept the reformed villains tutelage. Illyana teaches Warlock about consuming food and how to talk to helicopters. Dani is attacked by frat boys. Magneto confronts The her assailants bring the house down around them. The team beings to trust their new teacher.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #34. Warlocks prepared to stoke down Illyana. She convinces Warlock she has a plan. Illyana and Warlock teleport back in time discovering the history of entity that possesses Karma. Illyana and Warlock confront Karma or Amahl Farouk and rescue their friends.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #33. Karma and her enthralled minions are confronted by Storm. Dani, Illyana and Warlock do battle to free their friends. Storm hints Karma is not the villain suggesting an older much more malevolent force is at work. (She is eluding to the Shadow King.) Illyana eventually turns Dani and Storm over to Karma. Warlock confronts Illyana as a traitor! Plus check out Mystic Arcana #1 for the details of Illyana and Dani working with Ashake.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #32. Enter Leialoha! The New Mutants regroup to go after Karma. The first appearance of Madripoor an island nation in the Pacific. Teenage cocksure exuberance leads to most of the teams possession. It’s a flashback as Illyana and Dani teaming up to rescue their friends. Teleportation leads to further problems and future versions of the New Mutants suggest the rescue attempt will fail!! To be continued...

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #31. Roberto, and Amara fight the monstrous Rancor like creatures thats Kitty Pryde. The cavalry arrives by way of Cannonball, Magik and Rachel! The villain is revealed... I think we all know who.

My girlfriend is going into labor and I will be preoccupied this Wednesday so I will not be publishing the conclusion of Sienkiewicz run on the New Mutants issue #31. I will however return next week with the exciting conclusion!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #30. Enter the Beyonder! Shadow Cat and Rachel Summers join Sam, Illyana and Dazzler as they attempt to rescue Roberto and Amara. Dazzler and Kitty infiltrate the Gladiators while Sam, Illyana and Rachel are forced to confront the Beyonder. Kitty and Dazzler confront a shadowy figure while Roberto and Amara are forced to do battle in the Arena!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #29. Sam and Illyana chase kidnappers through the airport in their swimsuits. Illyana introduces one of the baddies to Sym and we see Guido Carosella for the first time. Enter Lila Cheney and Dazzler to aid Sam and Illyana. Roberto and Amara fight in the arena against for the Gladiators. Magneto takes the fight to the Beyond only after ripping the roof of the battle Arena!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #28. Xavier and a handful of his students are still in David’s mind. Regrouping they confront the Jemail the telepathic youth trapped in David’s mind. Jack continues his manipulations. Magneto and Lee romance continues and Empath make further plans. Dani offers an imperfect solution in an effort to rescue her friends and mentors.

Episode 32 artist Nelson Hernandez joins the podcast for an interview. Due to the craziness of the last couple weeks I was unable to complete episode 32 as originally planned. Therefore I’m publishing my interview with artist Nelson Hernandez. Next week I’ll conclude the Legion Saga!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #27. Xavier and his fellow students either venture into or are pulled into David Hallers mind. First all attempting to help David but eventually everyone’s just trying to survive. We meet some interesting personalities and begin to discover the true extent of David’s powers. Oh and Xavier finally discovers David is his son.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #26. Moria calls Xavier to Muir Island to help with a troubled patient. Warlock struggles to fit in and Doug Ramsey is excited for further adventures. Rahne struggles to allow herself to believe Moria cares. Moria’s patient is linked to Xavier’s past and maybe more than a match for Xavier.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #25. Roberto’s life hangs in the balance. Thankfully Ty Johnson (Cloak) and Tandy Bowen (Dagger) have returned in an effort to save the young mutants. Yet Ty is nearly crippled by fear. Can Xavier and his New Mutants help Ty face his fears to save Roberto before it’s too late? Tune in to find out!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #24. Rahne and Roberto flee the Mansion. Professor X and The Mutants follow. Rahne attempts to save Colossus from the darkness that consumes Roberto. Magik attempts to exorcise Rahne and Roberto. Tandy and Tyrone return to sacrifice themselves for the welfare of the young mutants.

We Xplore The New Mutants #23. After Roberto attacks Colossus at Harry’s Hideaways. There’s a mystery afoot that not even Professor X or Moria are able to solve. Meanwhile Rahne phones home from the penthouse of a ritzy New York hotel with no memories of how she got there. That leaves Mirage and her boy Sam to find the answers. The clues lead the young mutants to the Roosevelt hospital.

We Xplore The New Mutants #22. Sam, lacking confidence trains with Nightcrawler in the danger room. Bobby trains with Colossus. Warlock is examined by Moria and Professor X. Dani is still recovering from her injuries suffered during the Demon Bear Saga. Rahn writes a fairy tail. All of this is masterfully depicted by the art of Sienkiewicz.

It’s The New Mutants 1st annual! It’s a Rock Fable. Lila Cheney is a rock star and to Roberto’s consternation only has eyes for Sam... um and the Earth. Obviously the New Mutants get involved fighting alien, traveling through space and Doug Ramsey saves the day! Bob McLeod returns for the art in this beautiful annual!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #21. The girls of the team have a slumber party. Rahne gets a make over and Sam and Reberto find a metro. Enter Warlock... fight ensues. Illyana and Lockheed have their own adventure and Doug helps the team communicate. Rahne takes a leap of faith. Warlock joins the team. Plus an interview with my Nephew.

In which we Xplore The New Mutant #20. The New Mutants have been teleported to a pristine land which resembles the American West. The Demon Bear corrupts the land and transforms Tom Corsi And Sharon Friedlander into Demon pawns. Dani still fights for her life as her teammates face off in the final showdown... will the New Mutants defeat the Demon Bear and save Dani?

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #19. A heart beat and Dani’s brought to the ER barely clinging to life. Her teammates stand guard protecting her from the Demon Bear. We’re introduced to Tom Corsi and Sharon Friedlander. The Bear attacks Illyana’s body is protected by musical armor and her soul sword appears to injure the Bear. The team is teleport to the Demon home... the exciting conclusion next episode!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #18. The Demon Bear haunts Dani’s nightmares. A glimpse of the future followed by the arrival of Rachel Summers links X-men continuity to Days of Future Past. Meanwhile Illyana attempts to help Dani train in the danger room. Dani faces the Demon Bear alone, unknown to her teammates, on the Mansions grounds. Will the New Mutants be too late to prevent Dani from suffering the same fate as her parents at the clawed paws of the Demon Bear?!?

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #17. The New Mutants have been captured by the White Queen. Illyana with Dani escaped Limbo but return to attempt to rescue their friends. Illyana and Dani are captured by the Hellions. The Hellions suggest a Duel for the freedom of the New Mutants. The Demon Bear makes it’s presents known!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #16. Our hero’s escape the trap set by the White Queen and regroups in the closet. Amara and Sam take out the power grid and head for Doug Ramsey’s dorm. Rahn and Bobby pair together as do Illyana and Dani. Enter the Hellions! Our hero’s appear too be outmatched as each of the pairs fall to the Hellions surprise attacks. Illyana teleports Dani just before they themselves are captured.... to be continued!!!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #14. A tribute to the late great Stan Lee. Kitty has accompanied Doug Ramsey to the Massachusetts Academy. Illyana discovers Kittys in grave danger at the hand of the White Queen. The X-men, Fantastic Four and Avengers have gone missing. It’s up to the New Mutants to rescue Kitty Pryde... will they be too late?

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #16. It’s Illyana’s Birthday and she’ll brood if she wants too. Professor X is pretty broody (not the Alien kind) himself. The New Mutants throw a party to cheer everyone up. Only to have it crashed by the demon S’ym.

Happy Halloween listers! That means it’s time for James Xplores The New Mutants Halloween Special. Together we’ll be venturing forth into Limbo to Xplore Illyana Rasputin’s corruption and ultimate transformation at the hands of the Demon Belasco!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #13 - Magma is welcomed to Xaviers School for Gifted Youngsters. A barbeque erupts into choas when teenage stuns go too far. Kitty and Doug hack the US Government! Kitty rumbles with the New Mutants and everyone gets a lesson in responsibility from Professor X... I know right. Xavier's not exactly the paragon of responsibility.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #12 - The New Mutants, accompanied by their new friend Amara, are relaxing in Rio Rio de Janeiro after the events of Nova Roma. Roberto takes this opportunity to confronts his father. Rahne has a crisis of confidence. Amara is sexually assaulted at the beach begins her rampage through Rio. Is there a dark side to Amara? The New Mutants must confront Amara before she destroys of Rio but they've got to find her first. Will the teens reach Amara in time or will Rio obliterated?

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #11 - Amara transforms into living MAGMA to confront Selene. Dani is under Selene's thrall. Gallio victory is complete. Sam, Rahne and Roberto continue to question their allegiances. Roberto confronts Castro and frees his mother. Roberto and his mother lead a counter coup against Gallio. Senator Aquilla stabs Gallio to death and the New Mutants accompanied by Amara confront Selene!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #10 - Parades, feasts and palaces. The New Mutants are believed by the average citizens of Nova Roma to be God’s. Senator Gallio uses this to his advantage. Lucius Aquilla is caught with his pants down! We find out just how truly evil Selene is and why she’s called a Psychic Vampire. Amara becomes Magma!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #9 - Secret cities, smelly dungeons, and girls in distress. This issue has it all. We meet Selena for the first time and we the reader are embroiled in the political intrigue of Nova Roma. As our hero's are sold into slavery and forced to fight in the Arena!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #8 - the River Why... it’s a vacation or field trip for the young students who of the Xavier school. A game of hide and seek turns deadly. We discover Roberto Da Costa’s a tree hugger and still harbors resentments toward his teacher Professor X. Dani swims with piranha. The teens kidnap a young woman who appears to be a native. But appearances are not all they seem! She’s actually a Roman dressed in black face! Yeah I said black face. Their boat is destroyed and the team regroups on the river bank only to be captured by a Roman legion.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #8 - Leaving on a jet plane... the New Mutants are confronted with the 5 stages of grief following the disappearance of one of their classmates. Carnival is fun until Roberto’s mother is kidnapped. A racist caricature with an axe, calling himself Axe, tangles with the team but Roberto takes him down a peg or two. It’s off too the Amazon Rainforest for an archeological dig but Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club aren’t far behind.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #7 - On the road again... Karma and her teammates confront her Uncle and ultimately make a deal with the devil. Team America races through the New Mexico Desert. Professor X is attacked by a powerful mind. Team America breaks and enters then promptly explode. The New Mutants confront the Silver Samurai and Viper. Karma hears a voice and the New Mutants explode! It’s a good old Claremontian cliffhanger!!

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #6 - Enter Team America... its all fun and games until a classmate becomes the Dark Rider! Viper and Silver Samurai make short work of the New Mutants. Dani is captured but Xavier is preoccupied with the training the mutants of Team America! Only the New Mutants can help their friend.

In which we Xplore The New Mutants #5 - Stevie's being tormented. Charles Xavier doesn't know how to relate to teenagers without a Brood embryo to aid him. Xavier decides hunting down Stevie's staker makes for an excellent class project. Roberto Da Costa's plan is inspired by Magnum PI. Rahn Sinclair runs through a school dance in wolf form causing a stampede of humanity. Sam Guthrie turns for the very first time while blastin’. Xavier erases someones memories again!

In this episode I'll be Xploring New Mutant #3 and Uncanny X-Men 167. Its the end of the Brood Saga, someone gets cloned and Kitty gets demoted! I guess you could say Professor Xavier is jerk!
