People In Your Neighbourhood

People In Your Neighbourhood May 11, 2020
S2E6 - Tim Nuttall - "A Hooligan's Sport Played By Gentlemen"
It is my pleasure to introduce you to my friend and my pastor, Tim Nuttall! He moved his amazing family to Windsor over 2 years ago, and has a natural way of showing appreciation to the people in his life. And appreciating life, period.
Surprisingly, we don't talk about the music we grew up on. He's a radical and I am glad he's one of the People In My Neighbourhood...
Banwell Community Church - YouTube and Facebook
Once again, we are graced by the musical stylings of Lp.
S2E5 - Geoff Laforet - "I Lied To My Parents"
S2E4 - Kari Pennise-Hummer - "We Are Not Meant To Live Small"
Kari was the last stage of my approval process. Even though I had known my future wife for more than 15 years, I still had to pass the Kari Test!
Fortunately, I did, and here we are. Kari is one of the People In My Neighbourhood that embodies Resilience and Tenacity. Her whole family has taken us in and every time we get together, the food and beverage is exceptional and the conversations around the room are warm and loving.
I look forward to the book she's going to write, the way she encourages my wife (and everyone she meets) and her next step in the journey!
Here are some things we covered:
The FeminineXperience
Easy - Camila Cabello (SNL)
Aerial Arts of Rochester
Courage To Change (Book)
Calling In "The One" (Book)
Tony Robbins
The Pursuit Of Happyness (Book)
As always, Lp lights up our surroundings.
S2E3 - Kevin Rogers - "Travelling The Road To Armageddon"
The continuing revitalization of historic Ford City owes something to the New Song Church community and the leader with a vision to buy a 1920's bar at its centre. The community that helped bring me and my kids back to life.
A preacher and a lawyer walk into a bar, and one of them Introduces Larry Norman to Detroit Public Radio...

S1E25 - John Joseph Thompson - "She's Got An Audience. But She Needs A Bigger Audience."
In another life, John (JJT) and I crashed an exclusive Nashville party or 3. Today, we celebrate his birthday by bringing the party to Your Neighbourhood.
The Founder of True Tunes is one of several hats that John wears, and he shares many of the lessons he learned in spite of himself. Part of his mission is to encourage us all to "Listen to better music and listen to music better."
A noble mission, indeed.

Jeff Elbel, Lori Heiselman, Glenn Kaiser and John J. Thompson all joined us from the comforts of home.

The proof is here.
Theme splendidly curated by Lp.

S1E24 - Gavin Michael Booth - "If The Person Who Could Change Your Dreams Is On The Other Side Of That Door, What Do You Have To Lose?"
1996 was a banner year for me. I became a father, started managing my first band and met this guy in the Small Business Law class I was teaching!
Gavin Michael Booth has never not been in my Neighbourhood. Together, we challenge each other to JustWalkIn.
Proof: I called him when I met JJ Abrams on my honeymoon, and he called me as he watched Britney Spears shaving her head.
Listen to us discuss his endless pursuit of filmmaking. the art of shoes, collaborating with his wonderful wife Sarah Booth, celebrating 5 years in L.A. and the importance of "Urinspiration". His ability to produce excellence on a shoestring has taught him how to work and think economically.

S1E23 - Steve Geyer - We’re Not The Big Deal. The People In The Seats Are The Big Deal."
I've never had a surface conversation with Steve Geyer. And I don't expect I ever will.
Plus, he knows how to Bugs Bunny his way into a conversation.
Standup comedy is something that has always fascinated me, as it works best when there's no safety net. Steve has shared the stage with the best comedians and musicians, and shares his secrets for leaving a lasting impression. I used to play Steve's material on The True Groove, and met him years later, when he realized that Canadians love him more than anyone else in the world.
And for good reason.
Steve and I have Big Plans to Ruin Your Dinner... but more on that later.
Thank you for sitting in on our conversation. Here are a few things we talked about:
Steve Geyer - Comedian, Pastor, Author
Shameless: Set Free From The Mask - Steve's Book
Dry Bar Comedy
Margaret Becker
Newsboys

Jeff Frankenstein's Dressing Rooms Of Christian Rock
Theme music masterfully composed by Lp.
S1E22 - Anna Clark - “ I Love How Neighbours Are Not Just The People You Live Around In The Present Moment, But The People You Live Around Across Time"
Anna Clark gets it. She really gets it.
It was an honour to speak with the award-winning author of “The Poisoned City: Flint’s Water And The American Urban Tragedy”, as she is so engaging but also because EVERYONE needs to read her book.
Anna and I discuss the beautiful historic neighbourhoods of Detroit, her unique take on Disaster Capitalism, Emmett Till, and most poignantly, how we got here. Her body of work gives us insight into the place we find ourselves now.
S1 Bonus - Elias Coblentz - “See The Rabbits”
Elias and I have never met, but he provided a puzzle piece from my Cornerstone Festival past that I thought was lost forever. And I am grateful.
We talk in depth (spoiler alert!) about The Steve Taylor Archive, the treasure trove that launches on Monday, June 15!
S1E21 - Soup The Chemist/SFC - "I Wish I Would've Moved That Tide Box!"
Where to start:
Soup The Chemist - Twitch
"Through My Windows -" Book by Soup The Chemist
I first heard SFC in 1989, and caught them live in 1991. Changed my game on so many levels.
Soup The Chemist was the first Holy Hip Hop (HHH) I ever played for friends, and still spin his music daily. Especially for people who think that HHH started with Cross Movement!
We talked history, the future, and everything in between. A true pioneer.
Here are some of his Beautiful Music that we included:

S1E18 - Sarah Booth - "So They’re, Like, Really Interested In You. Will You Shave Your Head?"
"Every time I audition, I put it in a bubble and I blow it away, because who knows?"
There is so much wisdom and balance in my conversation with Actor/Coach/Producer/Encourager Sarah Booth. (None from me, of course.) I am so happy to share her insights with you!
As you will hear, Sarah is incredibly focused and driven by her passion to tell stories that need to be told. And you have seen her grace your screens on great stories including Law & Order: SVU, Helix, American Horror Story: Roanoke, The Moodys, Trapped: The Alex Cooper Story, and her own collaborations with husband/director/part-time model Gavin Michael Booth (The Scarehouse, Last Call).

S1E17 - Twin Sister - "What Happens When You Tell A Joke That People Think Is Really Funny, Then You Have To Keep Telling That Joke Over And Over?"
Twin Sister (formerly known as Boba Phett) is Legendary.
With funk-driven songs including "Scoundrel", "He's No Good To Me Dead", "Ben" and "We Don't Serve Their Kind Here", it does not take long to see why this band appeals to the 8-year-old me that first saw Star Wars at a Drive-In (and in 2020, the Drive-In is once again the future of cinema)!
Matt Zimmerman (aka "The Imperial Stormtrooper") and Todd Fadel (aka "Lord Vader") share their origin story, talk about performing in full costume at the most wretched hive of scum and villainy known as GMA Week, and provide an ideal visual tour of the great city of Portland, Oregon.
You can get CD copies of the Twin Sister album through their Facebook page. Buy 10 or more - it's the perfect gift for shut-ins!

S1E16 - Derek Ouellette - "She Married Me Just Because Of That!"
After talking to Derek Ouellette, I dusted off my treadmill. After I found it under a pile of laundry, of course.
Derek has always had that effect on me. After any one of our many conversations, my entrepreneurial spirit is recharged and ready for action! One of my favourite quotes from this session is "the battle always takes place in your head."
We discuss making the most of Dad Time during a global quarantine, taking back your fitness and health and helping others to do the same, and always asking yourself, "what’s my next venture?".
His passion for coaching is clear. Enjoy!

S1E15 - Tony Shore - "Sean Penn & Dabney Coleman Walk Into A Choir Show"
Today, I catch up with and introduce you to my good friend, Tony Shore.
In fact, without Tony, there would have been far less Groove in The True Groove, as he introduced me to the two words that changed my life:
"Dr. Shore."
We talk about how he knows far more about Canada than I ever will, his time in the recording studio with bands including The Lost Dogs and Scaterd Few and how working with a myriad of artists has translated to his work in voiceover and studio production.
Tony is also my podcast guru, and we discuss the heart behind The ObviousPopcast, introducing audiences to a whole new musical palette and his upcoming 50th episode!

S1E14 - Rachel Rose Oginsky - "I Don't Want To Keep Doing This For Another 20 Years... What If I Took That Chance?"
She did it. She just did it.
She wanted to work in Film and TV, so she packed up the truck and she moved to Beverly.
Hills, that is. (To be more accurate, Elle-Ay.)
It was so good to catch up with our friend, Rachel. We talk about her unique path into "The Business" and the dream that motivated her, finding peace in the midst of a global pandemic and her knack for finding talent and casting actors in exceptional projects including Suits, Masters of Sex and The Bold And The Beautiful!
I also get to share my own soap opera history for the first time ever.

S1E13 - Stryper's Oz Fox and Michael Sweet - "Well, I Guess This Interview's Over!"
Today, we combine #BBTT and #TBT to play my 2009 Stryper interview, not long after the band reunited. This was one of my first live interviews and one of the few times I've spoken with a band that has sold 7 million albums and counting.
We spoke in a crowded press junket room full of rude people (hence the background noise) but hopefully, you'll enjoy a conversation with some of the most gracious guys in the industry, about getting the Band Back Together again.

S1E10 - Hokus Pick - Part 1 - "It Can Take Your Money And Your Sanity... Or Just Your Money"
This week, we welcome the band known as Hokus Pick to the People In Your Neighbourhood!
One of Pick's many successes was the ability to tour across Canada repeatedly. What impressed me the first time I saw them was the way they could work a crowd into a complete frenzy, most of whom were also seeing them for the first time. Every time they played, they built relationships that consistently added to their fan base and kept them on the road.
We talk about their tours with dc Talk, Guardian, Steve Taylor and more, the joys of border crossing and the lessons they learned being a Canadian band with an international following!

Got a question about Rock 'n Roll in the Motor Cities?
Let Lori Baldassi be your guide as she schools us on important skills, including helping bands (and managers) understand the intricacies of crossing an international border and balancing the multiple egos of rock stars! Lori's passion includes mentorship for emerging artists, working with Windsor's annual Bluesfest and relaying the lessons learned by the people behind-the-scenes in her Biz X Magazine column.

Amidst the laughter is the story of friends becoming a band that continues to rely on each other more than 25 years later. Dumb As Sheep, aka The Crush, discuss the name that made them stand out, being Mike Knott's temporary house band, and finding a producer that brought out the best in them!
And at the end of the day, they own their music, a rarity in the music business.

S1E6 - James White - "Elevator Music For An Elevated Mood"
It's not often that I can claim that I've known someone since birth, but James White I have. (His birth, not mine.)
James and I discuss the importance of calming yourself and asking "who should I reach out to today?" At this particular time in history, he and his peers are seeking connection in the middle of isolation.
Enjoy this incredible insight from a thoughtful individual.

S1E5 - The Insyderz - Part 2 - "I Just Made $3000!"
To continue with BBTT (Band Back Together Thursday) on Friday, we wrap up our time with The Motor City Thunder with a Dash of Rock, also known as The Insyderz! #BBTT
Founding members Todd Miesch, Nate Sjogren and Joe Yerke share stories of (alleged) maturity, the artist formerly known as MC Hammer, and give respect and love to the Sonlight Club/The Fringe/GrooveHouse promoters that launched them into the world.

S1E4 - The Insyderz - Part 1 - "We Were Basically The Amish"
To kick off BBTT (Band Back Together Thursday), it only made sense to re-group The Motor City Thunder with a Dash of Rock, otherwise known as The Insyderz!
My Neighbourhood expanded tenfold when I was asked to join their team and negotiate their first record contract with Tim Taber (The Prayer Chain) and the legendary Gene Eugene (Adam Again, Lost Dogs, The Green Room), which also left them clear to record "Skalleluia" with music and film mogul Steve Taylor. Founding members Todd Miesch, Nate Sjogren and Joe Yerke share stories of hitting the road as teenagers, band pranks that worked (and others not so much), and the lessons they learned while encouraging rude boys and girls across the world.
Here are some of the things we talked about:

S1E3 - Irene Moore Davis - "The Maximum Amount Of Cubed Cheese"
It is a delight to introduce Irene Moore Davis to the People In Your Neighbourhood.
Irene loves both Black History and literature, and she is merging those two passions in her upcoming book, "Our Own Two Hands: A History Of Black Lives In Windsor From The 1700s Forward". We talked about how she can magically appear everywhere at the same time, and how she is staying creative and informed during this strange point in history.
