BIO
Before she was the visionary behind NJ’s newest premium cigar shop, Karen High was a mom, wife, grandmother, and entrepreneur. Karen is a proud business owner and sits on the board of the Middlesex County Small business Development Center. At the age of 18 , she began her corporate career in the insurance industry until 2011 before transitioning into private security business, Special Ops Security. Her inexperience and lack of exposure to golf, especially while in corporate America, has often kept her off the course. To gain access, Karen has since joined the Shady Rest Golf Club, the first African American owned Country Club in New Jersey. She is actively practicing her craft and encouraging others to break through the gender and socioeconomic barriers that exist in golf. In January of 2019, Karen opened High End Cigars in Scotch Plains, NJ with husband Anthony High to award the high end luxury cigar experience that NJ locals were missing. Karen advanced her expertise in the cigar industry by gaining her certification as a Certified Cigar Sommelier, and Whisky Ambassador. In an effort to merge the sub-cultures of sports golfing and cigars, High End Cigars hosted it’s first Inaugural Golf Event in August 2021. Karen’s primary motivation for hosting this annual event is to encourage cigar enthusiasts to support local NJ youth participating in golf sports events where they are typically under represented. Like his mother, her 12 year old son has made his presence on the golf course and continues to improve his skill. Karen uses her role as owner of High End Cigars to welcome women and other under represented demographics to explore golfing as an outlet to fitness, health and business opportunities.

Tarek “Ty” DeLavallade is a native of Chicago and Serial Entrepreneur. After being as he says “fortunately” laid off from the publishing industry he moved from the Maryland/DC Area to Orlando to blend his passion for golf and traveling into a quickly profitable business. Golf Quests quickly became a global tour operator for small to large groups of leisure and corporate golfers. After launching the company in 2010, he never allowed initial challenges in the industry to hinder his goals within the tourism industry that he initially knew nothing about. He quickly realized that he was the only Black Owned golf travel company globally and that presented its own challenges. In 2019, he launched Deuce Premium as a challenge to himself because many African Americans frequently complained that there were very few if any Black Owned golf apparel or accessory companies to choose from for those who were looking. Deuce is a blend of two collections - Golf and Lifestyle. The two collections have become the preferred brand for many fashion-forward golfers, cigar aficionados and trendsetter travelers. As the game of golf continues to attract more players, fashion has evolved into an essential part of the golf game – enter Deuce Premium. They also offer seasonal and limited-edition golf gloves, hat, and belt combinations along with exclusive custom leather cigar pouches and accessories. Deuce Premium will reflect everything that the game of golf is becoming; inclusive, exciting, daring, and bold! In early 2020, Tarek decided to revive the oldest Black golf association - United Golfers Association (UGA) that was founded in 1925. His inspiration was a significant gap in African Americans on the Professional Golf Tours and throughout the industry. Also in 2020, Black Golf Wire was launched to feature the back stories of our pioneers and current golfers. It also features golf industry news, press releases, product and travel reviews, video coverage, and more from established and aspiring bloggers, authors, journalists, photographers and videographers.

Steven Outlaw, was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana, and currently resides in Peoria, Arizona. From a young age, golf has been a part of his life, with his immediate family all playing the game. Originating from the Hoosier state, known for basketball, golf and more importantly a career in the game, was seen as unobtainable at a young age. His journey and realization into what could be, occurred in 2001 at the First Tee National Conference at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida, where Steven gave the speech that launched The First Tee Scholars Program. To see firsthand the impact the game of golf had on individuals, through the program, was life changing for Steven.

New #TeesMe podcast episode alert with Jackie Arnic of 2iron Marketing
Raised in Sutherlin, Oregon, Jackie began playing golf in high school with the mens golf team. Within 2 years, she formed the First Ladies golf team for her high school. Over a few years, her dream team would win the championship. She then joined the ladies golf team at the University of Montana and played all of her 4 years in college.
With a passion for golf, Jackie started her career in retail jobs at several golf courses during college and right after. Jackie stepped out of the golf industry for some time and missed it. She slowly started to get more involved again by giving lessons off and on, helping out at junior golf camps, volunteering with First Tee, and at tournaments. During that time, Jackie was often trying to educate women on everything they missed out on by not going to the company or customer golf outings. She would emphasize that not feeling welcome, was not a reason to miss out.
Eureka, it was at that moment Jackie saw the problem that she planned to solve. She recognized the golf industry’s inability to reach and convert interested potential golfers because they are focused on the wrong things in the communication, programs and community outreach. In 2016, 2iron Marketing was formed. ”We are having to become very innovative in how we connect and encourage millennials and younger generations to play the game. Their values are different than that of previous generations. In order to grow the game, it’s about more than the game. Its about true
inclusion, benefits outside of the golf course, community, fitness, presence on social media, collaboration, networking opportunities, programs for growing families. All of these things play
a factor in someone’s decision to take the interest they gained in golf from venues like Top Golf
and decide to visit a real-life golf course, purchase a new set of clubs, buy those FootJoy or Ecco
golf shoes. All of these things are connected but unfortunately the golf industry is not driving this narrative.”, says Jackie.
2iron Marketing is a dedicated marketing and consulting agency focused on the golf industry and the gaps businesses have in reaching their target audience. The company is dedicated to the growth of the game through strategic player development by properly positioning golf industry businesses to reach, communicate, and collaborate with their target audiences.

Disclaimer:
This episode touches on many sensitive topics related to women of color in the workplace. I request that you listen, be open to the conversation , and together we can be the change we want to see in the world. Plus, it’s Black History Month, that’s like extra credit.
For some, the topic is prickly like acupuncture but you’ll feel great after and you’ll have an chance to make impactful choices. For others, it is everyday life. What I love about this podcast is you! My listeners have an opinion, they email me questions, discuss my content among friends, and we even just talk in person.
Whether you’re a women of color or not, a seat at the table is great, but every table might not be worthy of your company. If you can traverse the NYC subways for Diner en Blanc…I say forget the haters and uninspired, bring your own table and chair.
The Memo is an excellent read, we are just giving you a taste.

Got Style? Part II - A conversation with Eastside Golf- The story of Olajuwon
Got Style? A conversation with Eastside Golf
Olajuwon Ajanaku grew up on the Eastside of Atlanta and it was golf that brought Olajuwon a sense of identity as a person.
African American Golfer’s Digest first profiled Olajuwon in 2012, shortly after he graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He went Pro for two years and has 2 professional wins under his belt.
Olujuwon relocated to Detroit, Michigan in 2018, he works in commercial finance company and gives back by volunteers at local junior golf programs.
That is where our conversation begins, The Eastside Golf brand was launched in November 2019 to transform the perception of golf. Perhaps it is what Stephen Curry set out to do with Under Armor. Use his brand, as a superior athlete, to make golf represent him because it is a sport that he loves.
Eastside Golf represents the future face of golf and a lifestyle.
