ABCs of Disability Planning

ABCs of Disability Planning

By ABCs of Disability Planning

Frequently families like mine don't know what's available to help us, we're too focused on getting through our day-to-day. But even if we had time, we would need to know what to look for. It's my mission to introduce a new organization or individual serving those with disabilities every week.

All views and opinions represented are my own. I am not writing on behalf of Capital Motion or Visible National Trust. Neither Capital Motion nor Visible National Trust endorse or in any other way support this content and podcast. This podcast is wholly owned and operated by me, Eric Jorgensen.

Pediatric Genomics and the Future of Rare Disease Diagnosis

Pediatric Genomics and the Future of Rare Disease Diagnosis

I reached out to Dr. Saquib Lakhani and his collaborator after reading about their discovery of the Jeffries-Lakhani Neurodevelopmental Syndrome (JELAN). Dr. Lakhani agreed to be my guest. This conversation is about a possible future for those born with a rare disease. I had no idea the numbers were so high, 8 - 10% of the U.S. population has a "rare" disease. I would guess these numbers are higher. I'd like us to start testing those with Cerebral Palsy and Autism to see if some individuals may also have an undiagnosed condition. In my perfect world, everyone will have their genes sequenced at birth. I believe gene editing will eventually help improve our healthspan, allowing us to live longer lives that we can enjoy. Neurodiversity-affirming support by Autistics, for Autistics

Neurodiversity-affirming support by Autistics, for Autistics

Doug Blecher founded Autism Personal Coach in 2013 in response to the near-total lack of real-life support for Autistic adults.   In 2022, Doug officially confirmed his suspicions about his neurotype. APC is now happy to confirm they are fully Autistic-led (and have been all along)!   All of their autism life coaches are either Autistic or chosen by Autistics. We choose them based on their commitment to trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming strategies. Their Coaches deeply understand burnout, sensory needs, and the importance of special interests. They empower our clients to take the lead, determine their goals, and choose their paths.   They know that lived experience makes Autistic people the real experts on autism. They're here to help make their goals a reality! Education, Expertise, and Empathy on your Medicaid Journey

Education, Expertise, and Empathy on your Medicaid Journey

ECR Planning offers professional support to families needing to access long-term care Medicaid benefits in their loved one’s state. Step 1 Meet with one of ECR's expert Benefits Advisors to determine eligibility and decide if it makes sense for your family to hire a Medicaid planner. If working with them is the right fit, you will move on to the application process. During this call, you may decide that a Benefits Consultation is more appropriate for your situation. Step 2 You fill out a comprehensive intake questionnaire and discuss the answers with your Medicaid Specialist. You will have time to ask questions and clarify anything that doesn’t make sense. ECR's team then pulls together the necessary financial information to submit your completed application. Step 3 ECR's team of experts and Certified Medicaid Planners™ are with you the entire time. If there is a need for other documentation as the state reviews your loved one’s application, they help you take care of that. They work with tenacity and compassion to advocate for your family until benefits are in place. Solving Medical Mysteries through Team Science

Solving Medical Mysteries through Team Science

The Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) is a research study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Its purpose is to bring together clinical and research experts from across the United States to solve the most challenging medical mysteries using advanced technologies. Through this study, we hope to both help individual patients and families living with the burden of undiagnosed diseases and contribute to the understanding of how the human body works. Requirements for Online Application If you decide to apply for this study, you will need to answer a series of brief questions through our application portal, the UDN Gateway (link below), related to the following: Contact information Demographic information Healthcare provider information (name, address, phone, fax, email) Brief medical history questions Previous evaluations Travel limitations A study recommendation letter from a health care provider (for example, a specialist, primary care physician, nurse practitioner, or genetic counselor) is also necessary to submit the online application to the UDN. The letter must be written in English, signed, and on letterhead. A relative cannot write a letter. The study recommendation letter must include: A summary of the applicant’s medical problems Date when symptoms were first noticed For pediatric patients: prenatal and birth history Previous diagnoses History of evaluations and testing History of treatments and medications Current medications Family history Healthcare provider’s diagnostic impressions We have prepared a sheet of information for you to share with your provider, as well as a set of example study recommendation letters. Please provide us with a 1-page patient narrative telling us your story from your perspective. We will have received the letter from your referring provider, but the narrative may help the UDN understand your medical history directly from you. Sometimes photos help the UDN team better understand the symptoms the applicant is experiencing. If you would like to provide a narrative and/or photo, please upload it to the application. Introducing Dravet Syndrome Foundation

Introducing Dravet Syndrome Foundation

What is Dravet Syndrome? Dravet syndrome, also known as Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy (SMEI), is a rare form of intractable epilepsy that begins in infancy and proceeds with accumulating morbidity that significantly impacts individuals throughout their lifetime. It has an estimated incidence rate of 1:15,700 Enter the Dravet Syndrome Foundation (DSF). DSF is a nonprofit organization that acts as a convener of the Dravet syndrome community.  Since their founding in 2009, they have engaged and educated all of their community stakeholders – patient families, clinicians, researchers, industry partners, and others – to envision and fight for better treatments, and one day a cure for Dravet syndrome. They believe that efforts to improve the quality of life for those affected by Dravet syndrome must include the patient's voice and experience to help guide outcomes. DSF is proud to be the largest non-governmental funder of Dravet syndrome research, worldwide. DSF’s steadfast commitment to advancing Dravet syndrome research, as well as our community’s engagement throughout the clinical trial and drug development process, has helped enable three new treatments for the disease, with several additional clinical trials already underway or soon starting. We have made incredible progress, including the approvals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Diacomit® (stiripentol) Epidolex® (cannabidiol), and Fintepla® (fenfluramine). Leading the way to an inclusive workforce

Leading the way to an inclusive workforce

The CEO Commission for Disability Employment is leading the way to an inclusive workforce. It was founded by Voya Financial, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), to advance disability-inclusive employment by inspiring and engaging business leaders to drive change through policy, practice, and culture. The CEO Commission is designed to increase opportunities for people with disabilities to obtain and maintain employment. We aim to accomplish this by building a diverse coalition of private-sector organizations, including for-profit and non-profit businesses of different sizes. Through effective collaboration and research, the CEO Commission will promote best practices across the entire business community to decrease barriers individuals with disabilities face in accessing employment. Their Vision is a future in which federal, state, and local policies foster disability-inclusive employment; company practices ensure individuals with disabilities can thrive in inclusive settings, and workplace cultures welcome and value the contributions of each employee. Breakthrough Therapies for Mental Health in the Workplace

What Is KAT? Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAT) refers to the use of ketamine in conjunction with facilitated therapy. KAT is a proven treatment for many mental health disorders, including major depression, PTSD, generalized anxiety, and substance abuse. Ketamine itself is a dissociative medicine that quiets sensory input and can give people a temporary change in their mental perspective. Its original use was as a surgical anesthetic, for which it received FDA approval in 1970. Since then it’s been used worldwide as an anesthetic, has an outstanding safety record, and is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines. Enthea was founded by a team of industry experts who share a vision of access to safe and affordable psychedelic healthcare. Fighting for disability rights and disability justice in 14 states - New Disabled South

Fighting for disability rights and disability justice in 14 states - New Disabled South

New Disabled South, and their advocacy arm, New Disabled South Rising, are fighting for disability rights and justice in 14 states. Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The 10 Principles of Disability Justice Source: Sins Invalid Intersectionality: Many disabled people experience other forms of oppression in addition to ableism. The experience of disability is shaped by race, gender, class, and more. Leadership of the most impacted: The most oppressed lead our movement because they know the most about how systems of oppression work. Anti-capitalist politic: We don’t conform to capitalist systems that profit from us. Human worth does not rely on how much a person can produce. Commitment to cross-movement organizing: We work with other movements to shift views on ableism and disability. Recognizing wholeness: We have value beyond capitalist standards of work. Disabled people are whole people. Sustainability: We work at a pace that promotes ongoing justice and liberation and values the teachings of our lives and bodies. Commitment to cross-disability solidarity: We join together to accomplish more. Isolation harms us all. Interdependence: We help each other achieve liberation for all living systems and the land. Government solutions control us more.   Collective access: We share the responsibility to create community with each other by making access a way of life for all. Collective liberation: No one is left behind; we need each other to achieve freedom. The Lucas Project: Recognition & Respite for Special Needs Families

The Lucas Project: Recognition & Respite for Special Needs Families

The Lucas Project provides recognition, respite, and resources to family caregivers of those with special needs. 16.3 million People in the U.S. are caregivers to a child with special needs. That number is staggering and also a wake-up call.  Most of us know of someone who is caring for a child with special needs and if you don’t personally know of someone, you can be assured that they are in your neighborhood; probably hiding behind closed doors isolated and exhausted. Caregivers often project the perception that “everything is okay,” when in fact, it probably is not okay and they would so appreciate having someone reach out and lend a hand.  It is our job as a society to surround these caregivers and support them through the difficult times, because a child is only as healthy as the caregiver, and society is only as healthy as the families within it. At The Lucas Project, we care for the caregivers. Introducing the NR2F1 Foundation

Introducing the NR2F1 Foundation

NR2F1 Foundation's mission is to support those impacted by an NR2F1 mutation, aka Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome through education, advocacy, and research. BBSOAS, also known as Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder caused by a disruption in the NR2F1 gene. BBSOAS is characterized by a wide array of clinical features, but the most common are vision impairment caused by optic atrophy, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. There are currently a few hundred known cases of BBSOAS worldwide with diagnoses rapidly increasing every month. The phenotypic spectrum of Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome (BBSOAS) is broad and variable, but the most well-established characteristics include developmental delay/intellectual disability and visual impairment (including optic nerve atrophy, optic nerve hypoplasia, and cortical visual impairment). Other common features include hypotonia, oromotor dysfunction, and mild and inconsistent dysmorphic facial features. Morphological changes in brain structures including thinning of the corpus callosum, and autism spectrum disorder are also considered common. Individuals are at an elevated risk of seizures, including infantile spasms. Genotype-phenotype correlations have been proposed, with individuals with mutations in the DBD typically showing a more severe phenotype, and individuals with whole-gene deletions and truncating mutations tending to have moderate to mild symptoms. Individuals with point mutations outside of the DBD most often manifest the mildest phenotype. BBSOAS is considered a static encephalopathy and has not been shown to be progressive/degenerative. There is no progression of the eye phenotype known, including no known progression of optic atrophy. She navigated the transition from being the adoring daughter of my hero, my Dad, to a journey with him as a caregiver through his diagnosis of a type of Dementia. She's navigated the transition from being a consistent top performer in her company and achieving the highest recognition, to realizing it wasn’t where she wanted to be, having no idea where to turn, what to do, or who to talk with. She navigated the journey of being single into her late forties in a career that had her traveling frequently and doing what she wanted when she wanted, to falling in love and marrying Jack – the love of her life – becoming part of his large family, embracing his desire to retire, move, and travel. She navigated the transition from being the loving wife and partner with Jack, to our being told he was now an Alzheimer’s patient and I was now his caregiver – the path we’ve been journeying together for the past eleven years until his death in 2023. She navigated the transition from living her life being who she thought others wanted her to be, to discovering who she's meant to be, recreating her life, and living with joy from the highest expression of who she is. She's become the master of transitions and is here to help you become the master of yours. She doesn't want your transitions to be as difficult as hers were or take you as long to learn how to intentionally – and successfully – navigate them as it took her.
