Dr. Scott W. Stevenson, PhD, LAc is an applied exercise physiologist (PhD from University of Georgia, ACSM and NSCA-certified), licensed acupuncturist (State of Florida) and competitive bodybuilder (four overall titles, including the 2009 NPC Mr. Arizona, and four top 5 national level showings). Scott has over thirty years in the gym and two decades of experience personal training and coaching online.
Scott believes in keeping an open “beginner’s minded” approach to finding what works, while blending his experience, Western science and Eastern medicine. Scott coaches from the perspective of educator, hoping his clients will eventually move beyond his guidance. He’s a former college professor (Cal Poly Pomona), academic dean and instructor (ASAOM), columnist for EliteFTS™, and adjunct professor at University of Tampa. Scott has published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and his lay bodybuilding articles have appeared in Musclemag and Flex magazine.
Scott is part of John Meadows’ MountaindogDiet team and co-authored John's book, "The Brutality of Mountain Dog Training."

Today's guest is non other than Dr. Dean St. Mart. Dean is probably most commonly known as the lead formulator for Trained by JP & Supplement needs.
Here's his bio:
PhD and Double First Class Hons DegreeProduct Formulator for Supplement Needs and fitness industry renowned Pharmacologist.
I’ve been competing in bodybuilding since the age of 23, but prior to that, I was a World Champion Semi Contact Kickboxer. An accident in training led to smashed bones in my right foot, and my Dad who is an IFBB bodybuilding judge suggested to take up bodybuilding - the rest is history.
I hold a Double 1st Class Honours degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from National University of Ireland Maynooth where I finished top of the university and hold a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and Fluorescence Spectroscopy.
My interests lie in Performance Enhancing Drug (PED) pharmacology, novel drug design, health supplementation and applying Functional Medicine to athletes to improve their health. My love of Functional Medicine is what led to the creation of a lot of the Dr Dean range within the Supplement Needs brand. Through this, I have gained the respect of the majority of the fitness industry for my no-nonsense approach when it comes to PED safety and health management.
On a more personal note, I’m married to my wife Morgan who was also a Bikini competitor and a Level 4 Sports Injury Massage Therapist, and we have 2 beautiful boys Calum and Charlie.

I am so happy to introduce our guest who is yet another RP Strength coach (In my opinion some of the best in the game) Dr. Jen Case is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who holds a PhD in Human Nutrition. Jen is a nutritional and fitness coach who works with all levels and types of athletes and active individuals to help them meet their weight/body composition and athletic goals.
Before joining the Renaissance Periodization team, Jen was an assistant professor in Kinesiology for five years. After spending time educating students in various courses in nutrition and exercise science, Jen now advises clients utilizing scientific principles for proper diet design and exercise programming.
Jen is active Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner with a black belt under Renato Tavares and numerous championships including 2017 IBJJF Black Belt World Champion, 2015 IBJJF Brown Belt Pan American Champion and 2014 & 2013 IBJJF Purple Belt World Champion.

Dr. Melissa Davis holds a PhD in Neurobiology and Behavior and has 10 years of research experience.

Michael graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University in 2014 as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. He was recruited to Charlotte to become Carolina Rehab’s Orthopedic Resident for 2015. During his tenure as a student and resident he sought out extra-curricular certifications in the fields of strength and conditioning, as well as sports nutrition, through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) respectively.
In 2015, and 2016 respectively, Michael became credentialed as an Orthopedic Specialist (OCS) and Sports Specialist (SCS) within the field of Physical Therapy. Shortly after, Michael became certified with Myopain Seminars as a Manual Trigger Point Therapist permitting him to perform advanced manual techniques with patients such as Dry Needling. Previously, he was the rehabilitation specialist and sports medicine consultant with the world renown group of doctors and professionals from Renaissance Periodization. He continues to provide these consultations via tele-health with the goal to access populations that otherwise would not, or could not, obtain therapy.
Michael specializes in rehabilitating the strength-sport athlete, and providing off season conditioning and programming for a variety of other sports including football, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, and track and field. He is also proficient in treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions including back and neck pain, plantar-fasciitis, headaches, shin splints, and knee and shoulder pain. Assimilating the two worlds of Physical Therapy and Strength and Conditioning, Michael makes it possible for patients and clients to work towards personal goals while rehabilitating from injury, or mitigating risk for injury.
Michael has competed in the Orlando Europa Powerlifting Classic in 2013, NPC Diamond Body Building Competition in April 2014, the OCB 2017 Carolina Classic Body Building Competition, and placed first at the APF Southern States Powerlifting Championship in October 2014 and again in October 2017. Michael continues to train and compete in the sport of bodybuilding and powerlifting as he expands on his expertise within the realm of rehabilitation and wellness.

#57 Professor Graeme Close - Nutritionist for England Rugby Union

Today I have the pleasure of chatting with a fellow northerner (North of England) Professor Graeme Close. Graeme shared my love for Rugby League being a professional himself in his time which allowed us to reminisce a little off camera (don’t worry we won’t bore you during the show).
The show in fact will entertain you and educate you from what it takes to handle the nutrition for professional athlete, specifically England Rugby.
Originally a Professional rugby league player, Graeme is now a Professor in Human Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University where he combines his academic research with nutrition and physiology consultancy to some of the worlds leading sporting individuals and organisations.
As well as leading a masters degree in sport nutrition Graeme is currently the expert nutrition consultant to England Rugby, he is the lead nutritionist to Everton Football Club and works with some of the worlds leading golfers such as Jason Day, the British Number 1 tennis player Johanna Konta and he also works with many Rugby League players.
On top of this, and despite spending most of his professional career helping big people get bigger, he currently receives funding from Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (the owner of Manchester City FC) to help professional jockeys make-weight safely.
It is this combination of academic theory (over 75 research publications) and applied practice that has enabled Graeme to establish himself as a world-leading nutrition consultant and public speaker. Graeme is the only person in the UK who is an accredited sports nutritionist (rSEN), sports scientist (BASES) and strength and conditioning coach (UKSCA). He is the deputy chair of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register and has recently received a prestigious fellowship from the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES)

David goes in depth about how he thinks about structuring phases from the ‘Off season’, ‘Pre-season’, and ‘In-season’ training. We also discuss the different nutritional protocols that need to be addressed.
I asked David about how adaptation happens in the body from a physiological perspective and how that practically applies to sport in which he gives a brilliant answer.

David graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Sport & Exercise Sciences from the University of Limerick. David has previously worked in a clinical exercise setting with MedEx Wellness & as a strength and conditioning coach with Kildare GAA amongst other teams & individuals. David has an avid interest in research and recently completed contracted research for Food for Health Ireland in the area of nutrition research, based in University College Dublin.
Currently David is based from Dublin City University where he coordinates research examining nutritional & exercise interventions targeting the preservation of muscle mass and function in older adults. In addition to this, David is also undertaking PhD. studies focused on weight-cutting protocols in strength sports.
David is the current head of performance the Rugby Academy Ireland & a research officer for the strength & conditioning software company, Aplyft.
David acts as the head coach and educator at Synapse Performance & hosts the Synapse Performance Podcast.

Today I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Dr. Mike Israetel.
Cofounder of Renaissance Periodization, Dr. Mike Israetel holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University. Formerly a professor of Exercise and Sport Science in the School of Public Health at Temple University in Philadelphia, Mike has taught several courses, including Nutrition for Public Health, Advanced Sports Nutrition and Exercise, and Nutrition and Behavior.
Originally from Moscow, Russia, he has worked as a consultant on sports nutrition to the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Johnson City, TN, and has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific and performance/health conferences worldwide, including nutritional seminars at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Mike has coached numerous athletes and busy professionals in both diet and weight training, and is himself a competitive bodybuilder and professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappler.

Welcome to the show ladies and gents.
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce Dr. Eric Helms.
Eric is a coach, athlete, author, and educator. A trainer since the early 2000’s, he’s worked in the US Air force, commercial gyms, private training studios, medical fitness and strength and conditioning facilities. As a part of 3DMJ he coaches drug free strength and physique competitors at all levels. Eric has competed since the mid 2000’s in natural bodybuilding, unequipped powerlifting and dabbled in Olympic lifting. He earned pro status as a natural bodybuilder with the PNBA in 2011 and competes with the IPF at international level events as an unequipped powerlifter.
Eric has published multiple peer reviewed articles in exercise science and nutrition journals and writes for commercial fitness publications. He’s taught undergraduate and graduate level nutrition and exercise science and speaks internationally at academic and commercial conferences for fitness, nutrition and strength and conditioning. He has a BS in fitness and wellness, an MS in exercise science, a second masters in sports nutrition, a PhD in strength and conditioning, and is a research fellow for AUT at the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand.
