172. G-Maxed Out, Rump Dials, Space Bottoms & The Rise Of Chives The Watch Butler

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick starts the show with a question about Ariel's recent column about luxury watch pricing and its downstream effects. Ariel has much to say about this topic beyond the obvious. Who knew this was a can o' worms? Leave it Ariel to dig up questions in a space that seems well understood. Check your assumptions, people! Ripley and David weigh in from their own experiences as longtime enthusiasts. Rick then pops a photo on the screen of a luxury yacht designed to hold eight people, sinking under the weight of 32 souls. Not sure what this has to do with watches, except those sinking like they have stones in their pockets are likely debating how to save the watches they're wearing. In a similar vein, David presents his favorite marketing pitch — yes, this was an assignment — can you tell these guys get a lot of emails that seem quite random? (Don't miss the bit about the Trump watch error. We Americans love it when Rick rubs our noses in the country's current political administration. "No, I'm laughing WITH you!") The fun continues throughout the hour with a mix of levity and serious watch talk. Tune in!

170. The One Where David Wants Better Watches And Ariel Wants Titanium Hairdryers

Rick starts the show by referencing the preceding rant edited out of the produced show. To wit: The live show took on the gazillion emails the guys have been getting about which celebrity wore what watch at the Met Gala. But onto something more important — grammar! Whether you could or couldn’t care less, that is the question. Now, down to some actual content. David’s latest “Grinding Gears” column is all about the gap between watchmakers and the consumers who don’t know what they’re looking at. This divide causes some problems, as David explains. Ariel has a lot to say about this, especially regarding value. Next up? Guess the Price of the Seiko! Then, onto a discussion of the Seagull Okeanos release, which also results in a discussion of pricing and tariffs. Ariel asks, “Why are tariffs invading our hobby?” And that is the question of the day. Kevin Roberts joins the foursome to discuss the latest from Doxa, Breguet, and other brands. Tune in to hear the latest.

169. Bremont Loses It's Brothers, Christopher Ward Loses Its Mind And Movies That'll Make You Wish You'd Lost Your Amazon Prime Password

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the quartet is a trio. Ariel is away, and David is super-excited about the new collab between Bulova and IFL. He waxes poetic about the hand-painted artwork on the dial, and it's hard to tell if/when he might take it off. And he's impressed with the price (just 1,200 Euros, including a Bulova movement). They move on to discuss two documentaries about brands — Bulova and IWC — before taking a look at the latest Gerald Charles release. Semi-usual suspect Kevin Roberts joins the show, as does Guy Blaskey. Ripley gets tuned in and heated up about the contemporary face of Bremont (there's a parallel to spam — don't ask), and the fivesome banters about the topic, which is more controversial with each passing day. Then, the segment we all wait for: Hit, Miss, Maybe! Listen in.

168. Minute Repeater Conclave, Rolex Rage, And F1 Wacky Races

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, it's a party! Rick has, count'em, five guests, all of whom are wearing black. In addition to Ariel, David, and Ripley, special guests Pete McConnell and Kevin Roberts are in the house. Ariel's presence was unplanned, as he's in Italy, where Pope Francis has just died, so he's feeling special in a strange way. Ripley is continuing to grow a mustache this week as he prepares to try to avert being placed on a jury. The guys get down to it with the question: Can one upset Rolex? Like, is it possible? Pete says "no," Ripley says, "kinda sorta, not really," and Ariel says, "heck yeah." There's only one way to find out the whys of these various answers, and that's to tune in to the show. Another big highlight of this festive episode is a conversation about Blancpain — lots of praise with a caution about the price (no surprise there, though). And guess what's back? Hit, Miss, Maybe. Join in!

167. The Regurgitation Rating Scale™ Debuts, The Hollowness Of Gold, And Introducing Mr Zenith

167. The Regurgitation Rating Scale™ Debuts, The Hollowness Of Gold, And Introducing Mr Zenith

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Ariel gets right to his most burning question: Why is everyone still so worried about tariffs? Because he isn't. In contrarian fashion, Ariel is worried about other things, like the watch industry eating its own tail. What does he mean by this? Tune in to find out. On the various home fronts, there are earthquakes in Los Angeles and wildfires in Scotland.Metaphor much? Along those lines, "regurgitation" is the word of the day, and it's not as icky as it sounds because Ariel argues that it can be an art form, especially in the context of Watches & Wonders 2025. David has a different view, and the guys bat around their ideas about Chopard, TAGHeuer, Hublot, and other heavy hitters to lend their expertise to the ongoing conversation. Ripley underscored the new tech and old design, a nicer way of approaching the regurgitation theme. This word itself is controversial. See what side you land on by listening in: strategy, art form, both, or neither?

166: Watches And Wonders: 31% Panic, 69% Champagne

166: Watches And Wonders: 31% Panic, 69% Champagne

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Rick, Ariel, and Ripley launch the show with thevestigial clap-in and get right to the hot topics of the week: Watches &Wonders, of course, and the many varying views on Trump's tariffs and howthey'll affect the watch industry. But first, Ripley puts in a plug for betterswag at the event next year. Underwear and socks would be awesome! He ran outof clean shirts before his flight home, so he was ever-so-grateful for abrand-new Oris t-shirt. And Doxa gave out passport covers so Americans couldobscure their identities — score! Rick asks the rapidly devaluing 64k question:What is the collective sound a gaggle of watch executives makes the day aftertariffs are announced? Ariel observes that already very high prices were apre-emptive strike among said execs, who'll just absorb these new costs. Davidarrives, wondering where the convo is at, and he commiserates on the swagissue. Post-W&W decompression has obviously been needed (folks are giddy!),but the guys DO get down to talking about actual watches — first, through thedoor of Ariel's parallels with The Brutalist. You'll simply have tolisten to understand this one. Rick scrolls down the list of 60 brands featuredat the show, and they proceed to talk about Chanel, Chronoswiss, Bell &Ross, Nomos, U-Boat, Norqain, and more. You'll have to click through to findout whether the news is good or bad.

165. Watches And Wonders Special - From Haute To Not.

Watches & Wonders is in full swing, as are the hot takes! Rick wrangles the usual suspects (and some potato-quality internet connections) for an unscripted, no-holds-barred roundup of standout releases, questionable design choices, and horological head-scratchers.

Highlights:

  • 🕰️ Rolex Land-Dweller takes center stage—brilliant innovation or Tissot cosplay?

  • 💥 The Dynapulse escapement has David calling it a "quantum leap."

  • 🍯 Gold rush! Matt swoons over three standout gold watches.

  • 🤔 Tag Heuer Solargraph – solar-powered F1 nostalgia or just plastic fantastique?

  • 🧮 JLC’s Reverso Minute Repeater – love it, but don’t touch it.

  • 💸 IWC goes full tech flex with an 80k perpetual chrono that no one can read.

  • 🚽 Bathroom-scale vibes: Bremont and Cartier get dunked on for jump hour designs.

Remember, you never truly own the 8th day… you just look after it for the next generation.”

    164. The Unsustainable Truth, Certified Pre-Owned Shenanigans, And LEGO Pharrell’s Tiffany Flex

    164. The Unsustainable Truth, Certified Pre-Owned Shenanigans, And LEGO Pharrell’s Tiffany Flex

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the guys get into the big vocab quickly, with Ripley identifying the routine clap-in as "vestigial." Yeah, like an appendix! But Rick likes it, and traditions die hard, so we don't anticipate the clap-in going anywhere. Rick, David and Ripley are waiting to see whether or not Ariel, fresh back from Thailand, will join. Formula 1 is still top of mind, mere days ahead of Watches & Wonders Geneva.... until Ariel arrives and turns our attention to Pharrell Williams' LEGO movie, which he watched on the plane and features a watch throughline. Somehow, this gets Ariel onto a jag about how "the value of watches has absolutely nothing to do with horological appreciation." And this seems like a reasonable observation and a good reminder. Next up: Is David a part of Team Star Trek or Team Steve Jobs? There's a great deal of pondering about Ariel's recent column regarding the rabbit hole of "sustainability" in the watch industry. He also argues that "efficiency is the enemy of luxury," perhaps a more controversial statement. Take a read, take a listen, and jump into the comments on the article, which are robust. But first, a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe!

    163. F1 Paddock Club To Cashmere Polo Club, Feeding Back On Panerai.com, And Wotto M.A.D Max

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the team isnow three. Where's Ariel? Rumor has it he's in Thailand, watch capital of....nowhere! We hope he's relaxing at a White Lotus hotel. Ripley is chilling inhis panic room, and Rick is home under the gray Scotland sky. David appears tobe having a normal kind of day. As you might guess, Formula 1 is the talk atthe top of the show, and Ripley and Rick debrief on the standings. Rick pivotsto the news of Frédéric Arnaud leaving LVMH, which leads David to surmise thatcompeting Richemont brands might be getting wise to the problem of"overlords" and cutting out middle management. This slippery slopeleads the guys to the Panerai website and a discussion of price-to-water-resistance ratio, if such a thing exists. Next, suddenly, aguest appears! It's Guy Blaskey of Detrash, a sustainability-focused brand that makes watches out of trash. On to talk of recent hands-on reviews, starting with the MB&F M.A.D. 2green watch, an homage to 1990s club culture. They turn their attention to anew release, the King Seiko Vanac watches, honing in on the excessive thickness of this time-only timepiece series. Hit, Miss, or Maybe? Listen in to find out. Switching gears to our newest game, Judge the Collab, the guys weigh on on the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic Wotto limited edition. There are vast discrepancies! Listen to find out who your views most alignwith.

    162. Ball Skin F.A.T Uranus Diver….And Other Rolex Watches And Wonders Predictions

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, all the guys are in a jolly mood. What's in the water? Perhaps spring has sprung, or somesuch, and as Alfred Lord Tennyson said, "In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love" — only in this case,"love" is possible Watches & Wonders. Anyhoo, the team dives into the latest and greatest (or not altogether wonderful) watch releases, industry insights, and other watch-related thoughts that come to mind. This week, they discuss the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT, Seiko 5 Sports X Moon Eyes SBSA287, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech Ocean Commitment 4, Junghans Mega Futura, and the Hamilton Boulton DeathStranding 2. They pack a lot into an hour! And they even have some fun coming up with the most ridiculous watch name combination ever! I'm not allowed to say what it is, so tune in to find out!

    161. Taking Tudor To A Cabin In The Woods, AP's Calendar Chaos, And True Rolex Is Gold Rolex

    161. Taking Tudor To A Cabin In The Woods, AP's Calendar Chaos, And True Rolex Is Gold Rolex

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Ariel calls in from a cabin in the woods, David ishome in Budapest sipping a hot beverage, Rick is at the farm office, and atired Ripley appears to be at home in L.A. — all reprobate seals clapping in,says Rick. Host-with-the-most Rick takes time to explore each person's space, perhaps to delay what's coming next. To wit, David has found a Morgan-Stanley2023-2024 report comparing watch brands, which reveals that the top 50 brandsdropped production of watches by more that 2 million between 2023 and 2024 — astat that causes some alarm — for everyone but Ariel, whose interpretation isthat some of these brands are playing with the notion of scarcity as amarketing strategy. Interesting.... What do the others think of this notion?Rick is struck by the fact the Zenith produced on 10,000 watches. "Shouldwe only talk about Rolex?" he ponders. The only brand that surprises Arielis Tudor, which dropped production by nearly 40 percent. Since Tudor doesn'tget as much"free marketing" as Rolex, maybe it needs to do more onthe marketing front. While you all bookmark this report to ponder later, theteam moves on to discuss some recent articles, starting with, speak of thedevil, the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic "Visa Blue" Master Chronometer, which Ariel likes because it's not for everyone — a "Swiss middle fingerto Omega," as he puts it. Next up is the Rolex Day-Date 36 with Roman Numerals, which David has afascination with — specifically, the deconstructed Roman numerals. AudemarsPiguet released an all-black ceramic Royal Oak Offshore, consensus about which seems tobe that, while it's not particularly new and creative, it's really pretty watchthat honors the brand name in refinement, if ambitiously priced. March L.A.B's new watch, whose name is toolong for Rick and Ariel to bother with, has more fonts than Rick can count. Theshow concludes with a riff on a Mission to Uranus. You'll have to listen to the show find out what that's about.

    160. Rating F1 Watches, Patek And JLC Go Racing, And 007 Rick Joins The FBI

This week on aBlogtoWatchWeekly, Rick reveals that he's now deputy director of theFBI (now that podcast hosts can hold such roles), and Ripley confirms that Rickis a solid enough conspiracy theorist that.... well, it works. Rick thenannounces that this will be an "F1 episode," and it's hard to knowwhat that might mean. One clue is the red robin on which F1 team each teammember likes best. When talk turns to watches, first up is the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar in Green, and Rickshakes things up by starting with "Judge the Collab." The news isn'tgreat. Back to the F1 theme, we pivot to the eyebrow game of the Aramco team.David then departs for the airport after speed-packing just off-screen.Fiiiiiinally, it's back to watches with a look at the hands-on review of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono "Flamingo Blue" Watch. And there's some hemming and hawing about the new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Bronze Gold and Burgundy Watch.Ripley calls it by recollecting that "the road to hell is paved with goodintentions." Rick closes the show by introducing his new theme song forthe F1 Champions League. Tune in!

    159. Fondling Roger Smith, Make Breguet Great Again, And Sponge Bob Princess Bride.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the guys areall in their respective Brady Bunch-like squares, and speaking of square,SpongeBob SquarePants watches are high horology! This segues quite nicely intoAriel's experience as an attorney specializing in contracts and his articleabout what watch brands need from their owners. In his column, According to Ariel, Ariel discusses why buying a watchbrand isn't about extracting profit but rather thinking about the overall valueof the company — and even the future perceived value. Next up, talk turns tothe Hublot Big Bang Unico, which David says looks like it hasthe bubonic plague. Well, alright, then! Another recent release is Vacheron Constantin's 270th-anniversary watch (don't askabout the 275th anniversary, as VC only celebrates the whole numbers). It wasan innocent question, nonetheless, but the team was in lockstep with theanswer. And then the question comes up: Is the Louis Vuitton Tambour catching on? There's talk ofblue-chip luxury, and the guys muse about the future of the Tambour.Semi-regular Azad joins, and they end with our Rick-invented game, Hit, Miss,Maybe! We wondered if it was coming back, and now we know. Tune infor the fun!

    158. Kill A Brand, Revive a Brand, Mash-Potato A Brand

This week onaBlogtoWatchWeekly, the only two usual suspects are Rick and David.Ariel and Ripley are in flight, or fleeing, or otherwise elsewhere. They are, instead, joined by semi-regular, non-suspect Azad and Kevin, and then surpriseguest, Leslie. All of the Euro-men are complaining about the weather ('tis therainy season in the UK, ya know). They get right down to business with adiscussion of the news that Rolex has retired its Carl F. Bucherer brand, andthere are various degrees of lament in the room. Next up, a look at Breitling'srevival of the Gallet brand. The guys muse about how they'll position thesewatches. Then, they discuss Ariel's most recent column in his absence. He asksthe question, "Are Swiss luxury watch brands engaging consumersenough?" The new game, which seems to have taken off, ensues:Judge theCollab. Fun! But where did fan-favoriteHit, Miss, Maybe go?And will it ever return?

    157. Why They Don't Play Our New Game In Nepal

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick, Ariel, David, and Ripley are, for the second week in a row, all in their respective home cities and Rick teases the show's preamble by announcing a very special new limited-edition series of watch cases made by the team's AV garbage. That's all we'll say, for now. (The show is banned in Nepal, but why?) All the guys have new podcast-designed mics and are feeling quite professional, at the moment. Getting down to business, Rick asks Ariel and David, "How limited is the new limited-edition Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat watch?" (Ripley already knows because he wrote the article.) Next on the docket is the Panerai Radiomir 8 Giorni Eilean Experience Edition watch, which Rick rightly points out looks identical to the Studio Underd0g X Fears "The Gimlet" watch released on the same day. Ripley shares the backstory about the yacht after which the Panerai is named — and a purchase comes with a trip to Sicily! It'll only set you back 43k. Ripley shares his take on who did this design first, historically, and he adds that the Studio Underd0g costs £1000 GBP (but doesn't include a trip to Italy. Rick addresses the elephant in the room: Why would anyone buy the Panerai over the Studio Underd0g? You'll have to tune in to learn the answer. This slides into a new game Rick devised called "Judge the Collab" — you'll be shocked, I say, shocked by the guys' ratings. The game catches on, and other colllab judgment follows. Tune in to get all the juicy horological details.

    155. Tiffany, Tees, Tudor, And Trump 2.0

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the gang is all together again and settled into their respective rectangles, all shockingly in their home bases. Rick begins by segueing from the live broadcast of the show (after the clap-in) to reflect on the previous conversation about blue foods being the "taste of 'merica). When they get down to business, the first item on the agenda is the Tudor Black Bay Chrono Flamingo-Blue watch, and it suddenly seems that blue is a theme! But make no mistake; this is NOT "Tiffany blue." But it's really, really close. Next up is a bargain new-release: the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite — a bargain only because it's in steel and is a manual-wind. But it exceeds Ripley's expectations, not only in price, which is saying a lot. David then talks about the special laid-back demeanor of Chopard as a brand. He walks us through his hands-on of the L.U.C. Lunar One Perpetual Calendar watches, which he saw in the metal last week at the Chopard manufacture. Let's just cut to the chase: David says it's a "bonkers" watch. The guys have some fun going around the virtual room showing us what they're wearing today (both Ripley and Ariel are wearing the Casio ring watch), and David is wearing the cheapest diamond-set watch in the world. He also reports that he saw a Trump watch in the wild, and the team grills him on deets. For some godforsaken reason, this leads them down the rabbit hole of the Trump watch website. Weird! Thank goodness they finally turn the page and play Hit, Miss Maybe.

    154. Lunches And Wonders

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is

baaaaaaaack to the land of the living — but where is David? Ariel and Ripley are here, and despite the fact that the word "snot" has been mentioned more times than the law should allow in the first five minutes, Rick is also kind enough to ask Ariel and Ripley how they're doing re the fires in Los Angeles. It's a lot. But we're all comforted by talk of watches, so they guys get right to it, and Ariel discusses a dystopian future when watch media is too thin to cover the watch industrial complex run by the corporate world. Where are the visionaries, the mavericks? Ripley dovetails with this idea and underscores the virtues of not being in any brand's back pocket, i.e., the argument for independent watch media and multiple voices. The trio then takes a look at the new Omega Speedmaster Meteorite Moonphase watches. There is some playful banter and some legit debate. Ripley is triple-wristing, and he shows of his Casio watch ring, a sight not to be missed. Next up, they team discusses the latest from Vacheron Constantin, priced at a mere 32k. But the question is: Hit, Miss or Maybe? (Ariel has A LOT to say here.) And what about the new Tissot Chemin des Tourelles Skeleton? Gateway drug or easy-access formula — or both? Lastly, how can one diss The Muppets? Find out in this discussion of the new Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy watch.

    153. The Rocky Horror Picture Show Of Watches

    153. The Rocky Horror Picture Show Of Watches

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is out sick (but he is listening). David and Ripley are present and accounted for, and Ariel jumps right in with a discussion of some of his predictions for 2025. He thinks the theme song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best background for this discussion because we're in somewhat of a time warp. His top five trends? Listen in to find out. Hint: There are five, and he goes through them one by one and asks the others what they think of his powers of prophecy. Ariel then turns attention to two fun year-end roundups, the 10 articles we published in 2024 that got the most eyeballs and our top 10 articles with the highest number of reader comments. Next up, there's a discussion of the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon watch, and the guys go back and forth on the merits of this particular design. What about the TAG Heuer's return as the official Formula 1 timekeeper? David gives an overview of what this article covers, both historically and in the present. MB&F's new M.A.D. Edition watches are the next topic of conversation, along with the various ways you can get your hands on one. Talk gets racy with consideration of Breguet's Classique 7145 Lunar New Year 2025 (luxe House of Slytherin, says Ripley). There's a segway to convo about American watchmaking, and Ripley elaborates on Mike's thesis: There will be no full-scale return to American watchmaking. Instead of Hit, Miss, Maybe, the team ends the show by looking at the latest Favre Leuba.

    152. The Best, The Worst, And The Bang Average Of 2024

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is virtually flanked not only by Ripley, David, and Ariel, but he's also got three guests on board for this week: Kevin Roberts, Alon Ben Joseph, and Simon Ryan. They begin by doing a round-robin of "Where are you, and what are you wearing?" meaning "What watch are you wearing." This greases the wheels for Rick's Rules of Order, in which Rick discusses how the show will unfold vis-a-vis the four categories he's asked each guest to speak to on this NYE show: the best watch release of 2024; the best brand of 2024; the worst watch release of 2024; and the most "bang-average" watch of 2024 (which causes understandable confusion for the non-UK participants). 150. The Post-it Note Rolex, Milking The Blood Moon, And Wearing An A.I Watch

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Brother Rick is conspicuously absent, so it's Ariel running the show alongside Ripley and David, who all know that to take a podcast vacation now would be to deprive listeners of the comfort of a discussion of their watch hobby straight to their ears. The guys get right to it with a look the new Venezianico Arsenale. Ariel proposes that when glasses take over smartwatches, the wrist will become available again for useless things like mechanical timekeeping. They veer off associatively into the rabbit hole of augmented reality. Getting back to basics, Ripley posits that when simplicity is done right, it can be more impressive than a busy dial because your attention is focused only on a few elements. Next up is the Rolex Sky-Dweller 226938 18k yellow-gold watch, which Ariel likes quite a lot, even though the dial has never sold him on "pretty." Ripley says he'd take it over a Nautilus or a Royal Oak. David agrees that it's a powerful watch in its complications and execution, but it's not right for his wrist (too heavy). Then the team discusses David's most recent "Grinding Gears" article, in which he asks "How long should watch brands milk historic achievements?" Next up is a look at the new Bulova Lunar Pilot "Blood Moon" watch, which David thinks is too large even in its smallest form, but everyone loves the story of this watch. Listen in for more. Speaking of small, the Hamilton PSR74, a modern LED with a retro look. David isn't sure he would spend upwards of $800 on this watch, though he's happy it exists. Then, they discuss the watch that the Venezianico Arsenale wants to be: the Parmigiani Tonda PF Sport Chronograph in Milano Blue. They end with a look at a deep dive into Bulgari's new watch manufacture and the Hands-On: Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono 'Cycling Edition' And The Role Of Watches In Professional Cycling | aBlogtoWatch Maybe when Rick gets back, he'll bring Hit, Miss, Maybe with him.

    149. How “Hublot” Can You Go?, Tape Your Brown Watch To The Wall, And Double-Denim Design

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is back in the proverbial saddle, and the laughs are on high volume again. Ripley is adorned in Tudor cycling gear from head to toe, and Rick admonishes the team by noting their "rubbishment" of Panerai from last week's show, which David wholeheartedly defends. When they get down to business, the "JaGUar" (stet) rebrand is the first item on the docket. (Rick pronounces the word phonetically, which seems to be a British thing.) Then, the guys wax sardonic on a $6.2 million banana "art piece," which segues into a convo about why ABTW doesn't cover watch auctions. Next up, they muse about the pantone color of the year, "mellow brown" and ponder whether or not this will trickle down to watch design. They get serious about Hublot's newest release, complaining about a whole lot of things. As (almost) always, they end with the traditional Hit, Miss, Maybe.

    148. Rick Is Missing So Panerai Gets A Kicking And A Trophy Looking For An Award.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the opening question is: Where's Rick? Ariel, David, and Ripley ponder Rick's potential whereabouts, with guesses from something related to farming to simply taking a good old-fashioned vacation. The working proletariat goes on without him. Ariel takes the wheel and shares his astonishment at just how many new watch brands are out there; Ripley concurs. If these guys haven't heard of a brand, who on earth could possibly keep up? Jerome Lambert is the next topic of conversation, and the guys ponder his re-assumption of the CEO-ship of Jaeger LeCoultre — is this a demotion? A promotion, of sorts? Ariel thinks going back to the product zone is a promotion; David likens it to sending one's best general onto the battlefield. Ripley discusses the Hamilton Dune and Hamilton's long history of supplying watches for the film industry. (Don't call it a watch — it's a wrist-worn device.) Then, the team deconstructs the new Panerai Submersible, and there's a lot to unpack. They move on to a discussion of where watches fit into the larger luxury landscape. And they can't resist pondering the question of the difference between grade 2 and grade 5 titanium. They end with a question, just as they began: Does Ripley's Honda Fit deserve its own watch? Listen in and find out.

    147. New Balls Please From AP And Hublot, Monochrome Omega, And Some Can't Unsee

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly,Rick and David are both back, so the happy regulars are all reunited. "Who touched whose Cubitus?" is the first question right off the bat, and hilarity ensues. Next up is a look at a WatchPro article regarding Rolex's exit from the Formula 1 stage. They pause for a moment to ponder a lovely and well-photographed visit to Louis Vuitton's Les Fabriques des Arts Workshop, discussing the positioning of the brand in the larger watch world. Then, they guys turn their attention to Mike Razak's recent column about how "small affordable brands are chipping away at the fortress of high-end brands."  Next up is a discussion of new releases, including the Doxa SUB 200T Diamonds series.

Everyone seems to be talking about the Jaguar rebrand, and ABTW is no exception.

It is the focus of the first round of Hit, Miss, Maybe this week — don't miss it! They also go 'round about the new Audemars Piguet X KAWS Royal Oak Tourbillon Concept Tourbillon Companion Watch and the No-Date Steel Omega Seamaster.

    146. The Return Of Universal Genève, What Is A Watch Review, Actually?, And Why (Not) Buy A Pre-Owned Rolex?

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, two of the usual suspects, host Rick and regular commentator David are MIA, either gallivanting or recuperating — or both. So, to mix it up, we have Ariel, Sean, and Ripley, kicking things off with Sean's observation that the news cycle, which usually slows around now each year, is still busily speeding forward in surprising and compelling ways. Ripley is sipping tea instead of Scotch — maybe he hasn't seen the results of the U.S. elections yet.

Ariel cuts to the chase with a discussion of David's article on Universal Genève, which was just purchased and relaunched by Breitling. (Spoiler alert: Sean and Ripley are both fans.) Then, the team gets into a discussion of one of the most discussed articles on ABTW this month: Ariel's Thoughts: What Is (And Isn't) A Watch Review)? Sean explains that the decision to run this article has to do with journalistic integrity, and Ripley underscores the nature of the beast in the context of other industries. Next up is a discussion of the newest

Ferdinand Berthoud Chronomètre FB RES Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition watch, the Citizen Series 8 Collection, and the NOMOS Club Sport neomatik 34.

Ariel has been vocal about his thoughts on the price premiums for pre-owned Rolex watches. Listen in to learn what all the fuss is about. They close with a roundtable on the effects of this trend on other brands. Omg, what? No, Hit, Miss, Maybe? Don't tell Rick!

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is traveling, so Rick is joined by David and Ripley, and guests Kevin and Matt. They start off with a 69k Omega X Swatch — say what? — That's a $300 watch. But it's for charity. Next up in the queue is talk of the end of the Only Watch auction, which would be the end of an era if it had actually been an era. Talk then turns to the GHPG Awards, and Ripley takes note of the brands not participating, and the significance of that in context. The guys briefly touch on the speculative question of how Tr***'s recent election will affect the watch industry. They wrap, as always, with Hit, Miss, Maybe.

144: New Old Smugness; UTC, GMT, And Zulu Time; It’s All French To Me

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, David, and Ripley (is Ripley sipping Scotch?) on U.S. Election Day. The subject of watches is more of a balm than surveying the political landscape, alas. Ripley is happy that he can now wear his Mondaine Stop-to-Go watch since most U.S. states have "fallen back" to standard time. Surprisingly, no one extended the metaphor to politics, but perhaps the polls hadn't closed yet. Getting down to business, the team starts right off with a review of ABTW's most-read article of the month, David's analysis of why we love to see giants fall. And by "giants," in this case, he means Patek Philippe and its rather smug leader, Thierry Stern. Listen in to learn what the fuss is all about. Then, there's a discussion of the slippery slope of "new old-stock," which Mike takes a solid position on in his recent column. They round the bend toward the finish line with Hit, Miss, Maybe: "the best wristwatch game there is" (Rick).

    143. Stuck In Patek Prison With Gerald Ratner In A 45-Minute Timezone.

Here are the show notes. Do you have a title yet?

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, David, and Ripley, as per usual, and they start things off by discussing, um, time. How unusual! Well, the subject is the time changes in Europe and the U.S., which marginally has to do with watches, although, honestly, there's no segue except for a brief foray into those rare parts of the world that actually run on 30-minute time zone differentials. It all comes 'round.

One of the more interesting sidebars that awaits you is convo about the failures of AI when searching for watch info. Take heed!

The team gets down to business with an in-depth look at some of the watches we've covered this week, including the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite watch. Next up, hear the guys' thoughts on the Patek Philippe Cubitus Watch, the brand's first new collection in 25 years. David is here in the flesh to discuss his most recent "Grinding Gears" feature article, and then they dip into the latest by Laurent Ferrier.

They wrap up with the game we've all come to want, need, crave: Hit Miss Maybe.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel and David, while Ripley is conspicuously absent, and the three muse about his whereabouts. He's visiting a brand we've never worked with, in a country he's never visited. Maybe the mystery will be solved next week. Meanwhile, the remaining trio gets right to it with a discussion of the news that Rolex is out and LVMH is in with Formula 1. The thesis? It's all about the money. Rick can't keep himself from lol'ing that Donald Trump has upped his grifter game by introducing a line of watches.... for suckers. aBlogtoWatch won't cover this editorially, as it does nothing to advance our conversations about horology, or horology itself. Yeah, you know how this goes. In media news, Watches of Switzerland has acquired Hodinkee, and David artfully expresses that we've known the unknown for a long time — and now the known unknown is known. Listen in, you'll get it. 139. Watch Ice Cream Wars, Can You Say JLC?; And The Seiko Design Team Goes To Spearmint Rhinoceros

Richard is back to host this week's aBlogtoWatch Weekly show — sadly, he needs a vacation from his vacation —  and the team starts right off on its usual quirky path by asking ChatGPT the price of a rhino. What does this have to do with watches? It all comes back to Hublot. (You'll have to listen to decode all this.) Then Rick chastises Ariel and Ripley for talking about too many watches last week. Once that post-mort is done, the guys spend some time talking about Ariel's recent column, whose thesis is that watch consumers don't really care who invented things. An interesting convo ensues. Back on the subject of watch books, which took up a good bit of air time last week, the team discusses the new Rolex Submariner book. Then it's on to some chitchat about watches from Casio, Sinn, and Hublot, followed by the moment we all wait for every week.... Guess the Price of the Seiko!

As per usual, they conclude the show with a few rounds of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

    138. The Best G-Shock Omega Makes; Are Watch Books Marketing You Pay For?; And Don't Be Evil, Be JLC

With Richard on the lam (or perhaps, as the team muses, at a Scottish day spa with the family and farm animals), Ariel hosts this week's aBlogtoWatch Weekly show, flanked, as always by David and Ripley. They get right down to it with a discussion of a trend in watch world: coffee table books. They flip through the pages of several new releases and ponder their respective audiences. Switching gears, the guys discuss the new Breitling Chronomat NFL Collection watches and express some awe around the partnership itself. Next up is a deep dive into yet another collab: the Marathon 41mm Jeep Willys SSGPM Officer's Mechanical watch. (David wishes the new Jeeps were as sturdy as this watch!) They move on to Mike's review of an elegant worldtimer by Andersen Genève, and then Omega's new Seamaster Regatta America's Cup, which Ariel deems "not pretty but cool." On the other side of the spectrum, the team discusses Hamilton's Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch with a white dial, followed by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Artistical Calibre 184. Even in Rick's absence, Ariel decides to play Guess the Price of the Seiko, with the watch in question being the Presage Craftmanship Series Urushi Lacquer SPB227, a classic design with a twist. (Ripley had to recuse himself because he wrote the article and knows the price.) The show ends with a reflection on Ariel's column about what to expect when you buy a luxury watch.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined not only by Ariel, Ripley, and David but also by Richard Benc from Studio Underd0g. After some chitchat about how expensive it is for brands to attend Watches and Wonders, the guys jump right into a day in the life of Benc, who's starting his day with this podcast and then heading off to launch a new watch! He gives us some of the backstory of the new StudioUnderd0g 03 Series Monopusher, which dovetails with the topic of collaborations and their possibilities and limitations. Next up, there's a philosophical discussion of aBlogtoWatch's Mike Razak's recent column in which he poses existential questions related to our shared hobby. Then, levity returns with Guess the Price of the Seiko, a regular feature on this podcast. After a once-over of the controversial Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 limited edition, the team closes with a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

    136. Black Is The New Black, Apple v Audemars, Form v Function And David Is Feeling Sad

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel, Ripley, and David, as per usual. After some chat about Jeff Goldblum's new show, Chaos, in which a certain Casio timepiece figures prominently, Ariel and Ripley explain why they're exhausted. They've just returned from Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, where the brand debuted two new Apple Watch models. Because they drove up and back in a 12-hour round-trip loop, they were pooped. Nonetheless, they both had much to say about these two new watches, not to mention Apple's security system. David also discussed how some traditional watch brands frown upon watch media covering smartwatches at all — obviously, an interest for many of our readers. Moving on to a release at the opposite end of the spectrum, the team looks at the new Biver Automatique Watches, which Ariel thinks are "nice" in their design to be affordable. Ripley feels sure we'll see the same movement used in the Automatiques appear in other iterations in the near future. The guys have fun with this week's round of "Guess the Price of the Seiko," for which there's a $90,000 price gap among the guesses, so listen in to see who wins and who's way off base. Ariel muses about why watch repair shops don't have waiting rooms, to which Ripley replies, "That would be a six-month rental."

It's been a busy week in watch world, particularly for Ariel and David, who are fresh back from Geneva Watch Days. There was a heatwave in Geneva, and Ariel proclaimed Czapek & Cie to have won the sweat-resistant bracelet contest. David's take on GWD is that it was fun but way too much to take in during the time allotted.

The guys get down to business with a look at the new H. Moser & Cie x Studio Underd0g collab, which Ariel thinks was designed in bright colors to attract insects and birds more than people. Rick simply doesn't get it, and David doesn't disagree. They then turn their attention to the new Konstantin Chaykin concept watch, ThinKing, the "world's thinnest mechanical watch." There's not a lot of traction among the team for this watch, either — but remember, it's a prototype.

Rick has asked ChatGPT, "Which watch brand collaborations does no one want to see?" and the answer is the best possible argument against AI. Next up, Speake Marin has a new watch, the Ripples Skeleton, that the team has no truck with for various reasons discussed at length. All in all, it's been an iffy week of new watches.

They wrap up with another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

    134. Speed TAG, Watch Brand The Moon, All Roads Lead To Bremont And Tourbillons All The Way Down

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by Ariel and Ripley, along with Kevin Roberts (@kevin_roberts100) Azad Zangana (@aztime), and Will Charlesworth (@inquisitivepheasants). The show begins with banter about bequeathing watches, and Kevin decides, impromptu, who's getting what when he kicks the bucket. When the guys get down to business, the first topic up is Chanel's purchase of 25% of MB&F. The team shares their thoughts on three new watch releases:, starting with lots of love for the Urwerk EMC SR-71, followed by the "weird" but "cool" Hublot MP-13 Tourbillon Bi-Axis Retrograde watch, which Ariel describes as "niche 1.5." Lastly, they hem and haw about the new Roger Dubuis Orbis In Machina, obviously a pun of a name. As always, the show concludes with a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe. Watch below or on the player of your choice.

    133. Rolex Musical Chairs, Should You Be Paying Less, And Japanese “Paperounds”

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by the usual suspects, Ripley, David, and Ariel. After a brief foray into the scorching weather in Los Angeles and Budapest vs. Scotland, the quadrangle dives into a discussion about why luxury watch brands shouldn't raise prices on a set schedule. Next up, it's Guess the Price of the Seiko (spoiler alert: David won), and then the team scrutinizes a recent Tag Heuer drop from all angles. There's a brief digression about Ariel's push-pull relationship to the idea of maybe, possibly seeing a bear on a camping trip — is it a bear or a deer? No spoilers here. Finally, the guys are joined by Kevin Roberts (@kevin_roberts100) and Azad Zangana (@aztime) for another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ripley, Rick, and David join from their usual spots while Ariel joins from Banff in Canada! Things kick off with Banff Bear Banter, as Ripley dispenses a surprising breadth of ursine knowledge. Talk gets back on track with Ariel's recent article on watch brand's servicing business, with a particular eye towards those brands that limit access to parts. Then they move on to a few reviews and new releases and finish as always with another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe. Listen below or on the player of your choice.

    131. Value Prop Grand Seiko, Watch Ennui, Moissanite, Micro Dosing, And "Are You Not Entertained?"

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ripley, Rick, David, and Ariel reunite for another round of horological hoopla. Ariel shares about his Disney desert march, the guys go over some Olympic watch spotting, and then things get properly started. David discusses his recent article about escalating watch prices, everyone chimes in on Christopher Ward and GMTs, Ariel defends a gaudy Apple Watch mod, and there's a game of Guess the Price of the (Grand) Seiko. Things wrap up, as always, with another round of Hit, Miss, Maybe.

    127. Quality Watch Garments, ADs vs. Brands, and Grand Seiko Haikus

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is joined by David and Ariel, while Ripley gets stuck in software update limbo before joining in. Ariel goes deep on the tug-of-war between ADs and brands as the latter seeks to expand into the US market with brand boutiques and direct sales. Then there's a discussion of how Grand Seiko gets its inspiration (or if it even tries), a watch based on an old radio, and an updated diver. Things carry on with a new hypercar from Bugatti and its companion watch from Jacob & Co. and Ripley talks about a sapphire watch with a QR code. Things wrap up with another game of Hit, Miss, Maybe.
