ACM's Vault of Cult - Movie Podcast.

By Andee Martin

Each episode I explore a cult movie I grew up loving from the 80's or 90's.
These movies may not have been huge hits and not received great reviews but despite this were enjoyed by many and remembered fondly.
As well as reviewing the movies I chat to people who may not have seen the films when they were released and/or haven't seen them for years, to see different perspectives and how they have stood the test of time.

Coneheads (1993)

Coneheads (1993)

30 years on I revisit this personal favourite.

It bombed so hard at the time but honestly it made me laugh so hard when I was 11 years old, it introduced me to Chris Farley and made me an even bigger fan of Dan Aykroyd. Would I still be amused all these years later?

Ipswich based comic, songwriter and author Robin Dicker watched it for the first time, here are our thoughts.

Hudson Hawk - An underrated gem or one for Die Hard Willis fans.

A movie I remember seeing advertised like crazy growing up, I'd never actually watched it..... UNTIL NOW!

It's a personal favourite of my guest Chris Asker, here's our chat about all things Hudson Hawk.

The views on this podcast are not always that of ACM's Vault of Cult but that of the individual.

Addicted to Love (1997) Edgy rom-com ahead of it's time or a misjudged attempt thats best forgotten?

Addicted to Love (1997) Edgy rom-com ahead of it's time or a misjudged attempt thats best forgotten?

This 1997 Rom-com had the stars and a big cinema release but did not preform at the Box Office and is now forgotten.

Had the cinema going public gotten it wrong and this darker movie for Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick was ahead of it's time and deserves another look, or was it simply a misjudgement that is best left in the bargain bin of a now abandoned blockbuster video?

I'm a fan of the movie but not seen it in years, I showed it to James Rowe from King Street Cinema, this is what we had to say about it...

What are your thoughts and memories of this movie? Do let us know

Mini Episode - Thelma & Louise, new season preview.

Mini Episode - Thelma & Louise, new season preview.

I was at my local multiplex on an evening off, I'd seen pretty much everything apart from Fast X, I was about to buy a ticket when I noticed there was a screening of Thelma and Louise, a 30 plus year old movie I had never seen. I figured I'd give it a go. Although not really the kind of film we cover on the show I thought I would talk about my thoughts briefly and tell you about some future episodes and guest we have coing up on the podcast.

Explorers (1985) - Did Dante peak with Gremlins? A fresh look at this mid-80s family sci -fi adventure.

In our first episode of 2023 we focus on 1985 flop Explorers, a movie I had never seen but certainly been aware of for quite some time.

Ipswich based artist/illustrator Ian Pointer grew up with the movie, he rewatched it, I watched it for the first time and we had a chat about our thoughts.

Is it an underrated should be classic or one that should remain in at the bottom of a blockbuster bargain bin?

Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

A Christmas treat that I watched over and over on video as a kid. It was shown on a regular basis on T.V for years but now seems forgotten.

Owen from The Pookajee Players joins me for a chat about this should be classic. He's new to this film..... will he enjoy it as much as me or has nostalgia clouded my views?

Our final podcast of 2022. We'll be back with more very soon.

BMX Bandits (1983)

BMX Bandits (1983)

A movie that seemed to be on TV every week in the UK in the early 90s, everybody I knew as a kid seemed to love it but one I never got around to watching.

Remembered now for being an early starring role for Nicole Kidman, this movie didn't take world by storm but those who did see it seemed to enjoy it.

A childhood favourite of King Street Cinema's James Rowe, we watched it and recorded this podcast of our thoughts, me as a newcomer and James as a long time fan.

Ernest Scared Stupid - Halloween Special

Ernest Scared Stupid - Halloween Special

Ernest is a popular character is America and although not a hit at the box office this has become a Halloween favourite over there. One I enjoyed very much as a kid and still like to this day but I'm in the minority?  In the UK, most haven't even heard of the lovable character.

I showed it to podcast regular James Rowe (King Cinema Ipswich) Would he enjoy it also or have my views been clouded with nostalgia?

The Hidden - Is This......The Hidden Gem of 80's Movies??

A movie that had certainly passed me by over the 35 years since it's release.

Buddy cop movie, sci-fi, horor, action, comedy... it has it all.

Recommended by James from King Street Cinema Ipswich, We sat down watched it and had a chat. ....I'm glad we did, a real treat.

NICOLAS CAGE SPECIAL - The Elvis years Wild at Heart & Hooneymoon in Vegas

A Massive talent??? well I think so.

I chat with fellow Cage fan Dave Kennington about two 90's Cage based movies that can be loosely linked through Elvis.

These are two I loved growing up but what will a newcomer think and do I think they hold up?

Up In The World (1956) - Bonus Episode

Up In The World (1956) - Bonus Episode

In this special episode we go back even further than the 80's and 90's and focus on a movie from the 1950's.

Although made well before our time many 80s kids in the UK were brought up on comedies from this era on television, shown less these days they were popular summer holiday and weekend viewing for many of us. Norman Wisdom was my favourite comedian to star in these movies and this was the film of his I watched most, I showed it to James Rowe of King Street cinema and we chatted about our thoughts. He was new to the movie, would he like it as much as me?

Supergirl (1984)

Supergirl (1984)

After 3 Superman movies it was time for a spin off. Problems with production may have been the cause to the first failure in the franchise, audiences may have become bored with the format or was it simply a bad movie?

Another movie I grew up enjoying and still do. I chat with Dan Champion from King Street cinema, who saw the movie in the cinema as a kid and Movie critic Barnaby Page, who had never seen it until the day before recording. What did they think? Was it ahead of it's time and should be regarded as a classic or were the 1984 critics and audiences correct?

I also chat about the TV series Superboy with James Rowe of King Street Cinema, an almost forgotten but fun show from the 1980's.

Tank Girl (1995)

Tank Girl (1995)

The mid 90s comic book movies were beginning to become hot property, studios were buying up the rights to whatever they could, trying to find the next Batman or The Crow.

1995 saw the release of Tank Girl, one I caught on video and really got in to. A mad plot, killer grungy/punk soundtrack and kangaroos ..... what's not to like???

Movie movie bombed and really hurt the careers of many involved, it has since gained a cult following and considered by many to be ahead of it's time.

I showed it to The Pookajee Players, movie fans who were not even born when it came out. Would they enjoy it or is this one just for teenagers of the 90s?

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979)

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979)

After Star Wars in the late 70's sci-fi was huge on both the big screen and on TV, Buck Rogers in the 25th century was one of my favourite shows growing up. I had no idea the pilot episode was released in cinemas and although it's pretty much forgotten it was a huge hit.

I showed the movie to James Rowe, who had not seen it before. Would he love it as much as me???

Return of Swamp Thing (1989) - He's green, he's mean but should the movie be seen?

In the first of our mini comic book movie season we focus on Return of Swamp Thing.

Jim Wynorski's more comic follow up to Wes Craven's 1984 Swamp thing. Dick Durock returns as our hero, Louis Jourdan as our villain and Heather Locklear joins the mix. In this campy take on the DC character.

One of my favs as a youngster, I showed it to my friend and former radio co-host Antonia, who is a fan of the comics but had never seen this movie. Does it hold up?

Solarbabies/Solarwarriors - Lost Boys go sci-fi, brought to you by Mel Brooks

Solarbabies/Solarwarriors - Lost Boys go sci-fi, brought to you by Mel Brooks

In 1986 a sci-fi fantasy bombed at the box-office that is mostly forgotten. A year later it's two stars went on to star in The Lost Boys, which became one of the most remembered movies of the decade.

I loved this as a kid and watched it over and over, what would a new comer to the movie think though? James from King Street cinema gave it a watch and we had a chat about our thoughts.

I also talk about R rated movies that were turned into kids cartoon show and recommend some new movies that you guys may like including The Black Phone.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun The Movie(1985) - From the the charts to the screen (to the bargain bin)

Girls Just Want To Have Fun The Movie(1985) - From the the charts to the screen (to the bargain bin)

One I watched over and over as a child, possibly the most 80's movie of the 80's. I still watch it from time to time as a comfort movie.

Will a new comer to the movie feel the same way or is it all just nostalgia.....

pre-Oscar Helen Hunt and pre sexing her way through the city Sarah Jessica Parker groove their way out of school to escape to dance TV!!!

Summer School (1987)

Summer School (1987)

The 80s were without doubt the golden era of the teen comedy. As a kid this was one of my favourites. Although it borrows heavily from more remembered movies such as The Breakfast Club it does stand out to me as a unique film from the time. Directed by comedy legend Carl Reiner and starring some of the biggest names on T.V at the time it certainly had plenty of selling points.

I really enjoyed re-watching this and now think it actually influenced quite a few more recent movies. I showed it to James who is a newcomer to the movie. What did he think?

The Legend of Billie Jean (1985) / Freaked (1993)

The Legend of Billie Jean (1985) / Freaked (1993)

This episode I focus on 80s teen drama 'The Legend of Billie Jean', a movie that i enjoyed as a teen and feel is forgotten. More than just a vehicle for Helen Slater after coming to the limelight in 'Supergirl' the year before, this has something to say as well as being more 80s than Mel Gibson's mullet.

The second movie I look at in depth is 'Freaked', considered a huge failure on release the passion project from Bill & Ted star Alex Winter made me laugh hard as a teenager and on a recent re-watch I still enjoyed it a great deal.

Both movies were shown to folks who hadn't seen them before, what did they think?

A massive thanks to James and Andrew for joining me again on the show.

new releases and other forgotten gems are also discussed.

take a listen and if you have anything to add please find me on the socials.......

The Last Starfighter (1984) - Before it's time video game movie or Star Wars clone?

The Last Starfighter (1984) - Before it's time video game movie or Star Wars clone?

One of my favourite sci-fi adventures of the 80's, now a minor cult classic but often looked upon as simply a Star Wars copy.

With the early use of CGI, fantastic make up effects, a great cast and funny moments I do feel this movie is quite special but what do people who didn't grow up with it think?

I showed it to Dave Kennington, who grow up in the same town as me and is also a huge movie fan, he had not seen it before, would he enjoy it or is it just nostalgia making me think this is more than just a cash in on the Star Wars craze of the early 80's?

Ernest Goes to Camp - The 9 part saga starts here....

Hey Vern,

As a child I caught this movie on tv and have been a fan of Jim Varney ever since.

Ernest became an iconic comedy character in the 1980's in the US but not very well known in the UK, This was his movie debut, the first of 9 films. I must have seen this 100 times over the last 30 or so years and still find it funny but what would a newcomer feel about it in 2022?

Returning to the show are the Pookajee Players, Andrew and Owen. They watched the movie with me and we had a nice chat about it afterwards.

Hope you enjoy it.... knowwhatImean?

A special episode where I look back on two festive flops that I enjoyed on release.

I've re-watched them and chat with people who haven't seen them before.

The Mighty Peking Man (1977) - Hong King Kong

The Mighty Peking Man (1977) - Hong King Kong

For the first episode is the second season I revisit one of cinema's greatest rip off movies, A fine 'tribute' to King Kong and Tarzan, this film is a real treat. One I watched far too young to fully appreciate but I enjoyed it for the action, I still enjoy it now  but for different reasons. What did new viewers think of it though?

I also discuss my favourite Star Trek Movies and mention a few new cinema releases that I think could become cult classics.

Turbo Kid (2015) - Lockdown Special

Turbo Kid (2015) - Lockdown Special

A special episode recorded over zoom during lockdown as a warm up to the forthcoming season season.

Although not made in the 80s or 90s, this 2015 soon to be cult classic has a real retro vibe and is set in a futuristic 1997.

Possibly my favourite movie made in the last 10 years, I asked film academic Adam to watch the movie, which he gladly did. We chatted after about our thoughts on this slice of B-movie heaven.

Enjoy!!!

Season finale - Maniac Cop (1988) and The Drifting Classroom (1987)

Lockdown meant I could not finish season one this year as planned but I thought I'd try to record an episode online, it evolved into and special show focusing on two movies. So here it is, warts and all.

Thanks to everybody who's listened to and taken part in this first season. It'll be back next year.

The Craft (1996) - Nancy the teenage witch

The Craft (1996) - Nancy the teenage witch

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

Teen movies were all the range back in the 90's. Some were huge hits and some forgotten. The Craft although wasn't a massive hit has now spawned a sequel and is fondly remembered by those of us who saw it at the time.

Does it stand the test of time and what do newcomers to the film think of it today? I showed it to 3 people who hadn't seen it before and we chatted about the movie afterward.

This episode also features a couple of tracks from the soundtrack and a song influenced by the film.

Tremors (1990) - Only rental and video sales can save our Bacon!!

One of my favourite monster movies growing up. A movie I could enjoy with both my family and friends. Although it has spawned many sequels it was not a hit at the box-office and at the time Kevin Bacon didn't even want to be in it.

I loved watching this again and showed it to a friend who was new to it, did he get the same enjoyment or has nostalgia clouded my eyes?

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2 (1986) - Leatherface in love??

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2 (1986) - Leatherface in love??

In 1974 Tobe Hooper made the horror masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, considered by many to be one of the greatest scary movies ever made and influencing the genre greatly after it's release. More than a decade later he made it's long awaited sequel. a movie that now has cult status but bombed at the box-office and got ripped to shreds by critics.

I have a soft spot for this movie, if watched as a dark comedy i do feel it has much to offer, a movie that was very much of its time but I think that's what makes it so enjoyable.

I showed it to two friends who had not seen it before, did they get the enjoyment it did from it or feel they way of the critics??

Howard The Duck (1986) - George Lucas meets Marvel... what could go wrong?

Howard The Duck (1986) - George Lucas meets Marvel... what could go wrong?

A movie considered by many to be one of the worst ever made but as a child I watched this over and over.

It was the very first Marvel movie, famous more for being the first flop made by George Lucas. It is certainly flawed but I still think a fun and likable movie. I showed it to three friends who hadn't seen it before. Let's see what they thought of it...

The Monster Squad (1987) - Who ya gonna call? .. The Goonies??

The Monster Squad (1987) - Who ya gonna call? .. The Goonies??

A movie I rented over and over from the video store as a kid. I loved it, as did a few friends of mine but the film seemed unheard of to anybody else. It was our little secret. Years later I discover we actually weren't alone and the movie has become a cult classic. It may have had less then great reviews, considered a rip-off of other movies and only made a third of it's budget back at the box-office but it has over time found it's audience who quote lines and watch it over and over.

I recently re-watched it and showed it to three friends who had never seen it, here's our thoughts on this lost 80s classic!!

Super Mario Bros (1993) - This ain't no game, but is it a movie?

Super Mario Bros (1993) - This ain't no game, but is it a movie?

A movie I enjoyed in the cinema as a child, based on one of my favourite video game.  It was meant to be one of the biggest films of the year but bombed at the box-office and has been disowned by many associated with it. The star Bob Hoskins even said it was the biggest mistake of his career.

Near 30 years later I look back on the movie with Andrew Stretton, who had not seen it until the night before we recorded this podcast. Some consider the film ahead of it's time and it has become a bit of a cult classic. Should it has received better reviews and been a hit or should they have simply looked at the scripted before filming and said game over?

Teen Wolf (1985) - Fox in a wolf's clothing.

Teen Wolf (1985) - Fox in a wolf's clothing.

In 1985 Michael J Fox starred in one of the biggest movies of all time and was set to become a huge star. Back to the Future took the world by storm and is now considered a classic. The lesser acclaimed movie Teen Wolf was also released that year. In which Fox played a character not unlike Marty McFly, he didn't travel through time however, but did turn into a werewolf, win an important basketball match and learn a few things about life along the way.

This movie didn't do too well with the critics but did make some money, spawn a cartoon series, one sequel (without Fox) and a reboot in the form of a live action TV series in 2011.

One of my favourite movies growing up, I look at it as an adult 35 years after it's release with a couple of guys who are new to the movie.

Masters of the Universe (1987)-What could have been the next Star Wars!!!

Masters of the Universe (1987)-What could have been the next Star Wars!!!

The first episode, what should have been one of the biggest movies of the 1980s...... it wasn't but it was a hell of a lot of fun.

In 1987 Cannon released a movie based on one TV's most popular cartoon series and a toy range that took the world by storm. It was meant to be 'The next Star Wars'...... the movie bombed and added to the movie company going out of business.

This was the first movie I saw at the cinema as a kid, I loved and still watch it with a smile from time to time.

I am not alone in my appreciation for this movie but what do people who didn't grow up with it think? Is it an underrated classic or actual trash that seems far better than it is due to nostalgia??

Masters of the Universe well over 3 decades on...... I take a look back and chat with others about their views on this film.
