Tangent #79 - The Wisdom and Hilarity of Life
In this conversation, we attempt to explore the unexpected lessons hidden in life's randomness and glean the profound insights gained from seemingly trivial experiences. And we also bring light to the absurdity of mattress commercials in Texas, uncovering the curious quirks of regional advertising. If you don't know, check out Mattress Mack! We chat about a recent medicine journey I took and some of the integrative moments I took from that experience. And stick around for an intriguing tidbit about Joni Mitchell that you will probably want to verify for yourself, but it's an interesting journey.

Tangent #78 - Is There Meaning Amidst the Chaos?
Join us for a thought-provoking journey as we delve into the fabric of our human experience. In today's episode, we ponder the notion of whether there's a malevolent force orchestrating our lives or if we're simply crafting meaning from the chaos. As humans, we're wired to weave narratives, finding significance even in the seemingly mundane. Ever heard of the Church of the Latter-Day Dude? It emerged from the cult classic film "The Big Lebowski," but did the Coen brothers anticipate its creation? And what about individuals like Rick Rubin, encouraging us to tap into our creative depths? But is creativity solely reserved for the privileged few or accessible to all, even those struggling to make ends meet? We'll contemplate embracing our present circumstances, even if they diverge drastically from our past expectations. Plus, a curious dive into the enigmatic "Running Scared" from Paul Walker's repertoire. So buckle up as we navigate why Eddie Vedder might just be a more pleasant guest than Gary Payton.

Tangent #77 - A Tangent In Its Truest From Pt 4
Topics come and go, but I love maneuvering through a seemingly nonsensical, tangential conversation. Join us as we navigate through seemingly nonsensical conversations that somehow always find their way back home. In today's episode, we tackle the ever-relatable topic of travel frustrations and share our savvy strategies for overcoming them. Ever wondered about the awkwardness of celebrity obsession or the joys (and pitfalls) of teaching life lessons to kids? We've got you covered. And don't miss our Zen moments of the week, because sometimes, it's the detours in life that lead to the most profound discoveries. Tune in as we turn tangents into pure gold.

Tangent #76 - Nice, Not Naïve: Navigating People-Pleasing Pitfalls
Today we are digging into the complexities of being nice while avoiding the pitfalls of people-pleasing. We'll explore impactful phrases like "being in trouble" and question who we're truly accountable to. Additionally, we'll dissect the notion of "confidential contracts" and how they silently erode relationships. But fear not, it's not all serious! We'll also weave a narrative connecting Steve Buscemi through iconic films like Billy Madison, ConAir, and The Big Lebowski, sharing awkward encounters along the way that probably needed to happen. So, come along as we navigate the delicate balance of kindness without becoming doormats, all while leaving ample time for indulging in our favorite Nick Cage movies.

Tangent #75 - The Pranker and The Pranked
Pranks have been a very active part of our lives. Sometimes whether we want it to be or not. The 3 of us had the pleasure of working together for a number of years, which involved many pranks and now our bonded friendship. Today we share stories of the pranks that we have been a part of. Whether on the pranking side, or the receiving side, as long as no one gets hurt, I always appreciate being involved. Sometimes we need to see how seriously we are taking ourselves. So join us today and find out why Kinzie is a Queen of pranks, but may rat on you if the pressure is on.

Tangent #74 - Musical Metamorphoses: Evolving with Artists
Here at Zen and Not Zen, it's no surprise that we love our music. In today's episode, we're diving into the transformative journey of artists and how their evolution impacts our connection to their work. Inspired by Andre 3000's innovative flute album, we explore the question: do we grow alongside our favorite artists as they push boundaries in their craft? Witnessing artists evolve is a beautiful experience, but are we willing or even eager to evolve with them? Take the Black Eyed Peas, for instance; many adored their music before Fergie joined, yet their success soared after her addition. Metallica faced criticism upon releasing the Black Album, but it marked a pivotal turn in their trajectory. Then there's Tom DeLonge from Blink 182, who ventured into founding a company that delves into monitoring extraterrestrial activity for the government—a remarkable departure from his musical roots. Join us as we delve into these musical metamorphoses and ponder if and how we embrace change alongside our favorite artists. Oh, and while we're at it, we'll also share some tips on achieving the perfect toast using the golden ratio for toasters: 1-4-2-3.

Tangent #73 - Our Attempt to Review 2023
This episode is a personal favorite of mine. In our haphazard attempt to talk about 2023 and the impact it had on us, we end up talking about everything but 2023. We cover the influence that the band Blues Traveler had on us. How all spiritual and religious practices really just want us to be good people, when you boil it down. And how upside down pineapples can mean that you're into swinging. You know, normal ZNZBT BS. But my personal highlight is witnessing Kinzie's on air existential crisis and the hilarity that ensues. So come with us as we kinda talk about 2023, but also weird stories about eye contacts.

Tangent #72 - Odd Job & Random Skills
What random jobs have you had? But more importantly, what random skills have the jobs you've had taught you? From splicing movies together to video game coin mech repairs, we may not know when this random knowledge will come in handy, until you need it. But more than that, what interesting practices do you have, or have you seen someone else do? We talk about ascetic Yogic practices like flossing your nose and de-anchoring your tongue to find enlightenment. There are many ways to approach life and the knowledge you gain from these approaches may not make sense until it does. So join us today as we find out what food made Kinzie cheat on her vegan diet, whether Robin prefers skydiving or bungie jumping and why we are smitten with a young Angela Lansbury. It's always an interesting ride.

Tangent #71 - Villains We Love to Hate & Secretly Love
Why do we love villains so much? Is it that we empathize with them in some way? Maybe they're acting in a way that you wish you could sometimes. Or maybe we just love to see what chaos would look like, but from the safety of our own managed mayhem. Whatever your reason, we all seem to have some that we look to, so today we are talking about ours. We explore what we consider to be good villain loving qualities, but also how Wesley Snipes character in Blade influenced Dennis Rodman to start dying his hair. Cohesive randomness is how we roll. Join us as we praise Alan Rickman and question why Dolf Lundgren has a seemingly more successful real estate career, than he did playing the bad guy in the 80's.

Tangent #70 - Sack Tapping & Other Strange Rituals
Growing up in organized sports, our coaches used to cup check us constantly. Whether they were trying to see if we were in uniform, or it was some sadistic ritual, the jury is still out. But it seems that this has continued and is now going viral. So why do much of the "affectionate" rituals that men in the west observe seem to have undertones of a desperation to touch and be touched? Are we so afraid to show any type of affection that we need to add an overtone of pain to it? I don't remember hearing stories of band teachers cup checking band members with an Obo. Join us today as we tangent about strange male rituals, regional weed shops and the rest of the randomness that weaves this conversation together.

Tangent #69 - Adult Cartoons
We at Zen and Not Zen love our entertainment! And we deeply enjoy adult cartoons. So today, we are spending some time talking about adult cartoons and cartoons that have adult overtones. We have the classics like The Simpsons, Family Guy & South Park, but what are your go to's? We also tackle the hard hitting topics like Chuck's vs Vans, Canadian musicians and whether or not the Ernest movies hold up. Tangent #68 - Unintended Social Experiments
Burning man 2023 was met with many unexpected challenges. In todays tangent, we talk about this unintended social experiment and how what may be perceived as going wrong, may actually be the signs of something right. Most of us have been a part of something that may have started small and intimate; a cult classic movie, a music group or sub-genre, but when it gained popularity we turned away from it, toting that it, or they "sold out." Jimmy Buffet may be that for some of you, or perhaps you never wanted a "Cheeseburger in Paradise?" Join us as we make our way through my dicey family history, crypto currency and tangents galore.

Tangent #67 - Expectations, Limitations & Perceptions
Anne Lamott dropped this gem: "Expectations are resentments waiting to happen." Today, we are chatting about all the wild things we anticipate and the boxes we put ourselves, others, and life in. But hey, can we just take a moment and marvel at the fact that aliens are being talked about openly by our governing officials now? I was half-expecting a full-blown extraterrestrial parade! But nope, just another day in the intergalactic news cycle. So, let's do a little expectation exorcism, shall we? Release your expectations and laugh with us for the next hour.

Tangent #65 - A Tangent In Its Truest Form Pt3
As you may know by now, we have "topics" that we typically move towards in our conversations. Sometimes we get there, sometimes we don't. Today is one of those days that we just couldn't really get to the topic. But that's ok! We'll get to that topic one of these days. So today, we talk about Pride week and how to keep showing up as an ally. How Australia, as a country, will kill you if you're not paying attention. I learn what a "haboob" is, and we review 2 very interesting movies, "Caligula" and "Pink Flamingo." Life is pretty non-linear and unexpected at times, so why can't our conversations.

Tangent #64 - The Joke Doula
Please humor me as I try to work out this idea in my head, as we conversate about it on the air. Life is funny, whether it's "meant" to be or not. And sometimes we observe life in all of its hilarity, again, whether it's intended to be or not. With all of that being said. We have a birthing doula, who births babies into the world. We have death doulas, who assist souls out of this world. So can we start calling those who witness life and birth it into comedy a joke doula. Your are literally birthing comedy into this world, through the observation of life. It's not a new idea, by any means. I mean, Larry David created 2 successful tv series out of this idea, but I like this name a little bit better. Life is funny. And most of us take ourselves too seriously and may be missing out on some good observable comedy. Come with us on this journey of us recalling situational humor throughout our lives. That without having been witnessed, would not have brought the joy you are about to hear.

Tangent #63 - A Tangent About Beauty
Beauty is a very subjective observation, and also one of my favorite expressions from the Canadian slang. But sometimes we tend to find beauty in some not so beautiful moments. Maybe it's more of an esoteric beauty at that point. Like the beauty in climbing back up from rock bottom, or the beauty in saying goodbye to a loved one. And there are also the dangerous and unattainable beauty, like the beauty standards that the world has put us. So, with the many aspects and ways to approach beauty, what does it mean to you? There is a saying that "beauty breeds discontent". We can be surrounded by beauty, but do we take it for granted? Do you remember how beautiful Alanis Morsiettes' Jagged Little Pill album was? Dave Coulier does, but maybe he would like to forget. Also, join us as we lovingly say goodbye to Kinzie's dog, Jeff.

Tangent #62 - A Tangent About Humanity
Today, we totally went off topic, (yes, there are topics) and stumbled our way into a tangent about humanity. There is a lot happening in the world right now. We started off talking about gourmet fast food and Walmart shenanigans, harmless enough. But when we brought up the new golf league, LIV, it opened the door to move the conversation toward humanity. We could have easily talked about the Gin Blossoms for an hour, and still may at some point. But for today, we bring you Kinzie's desire to have a line of Bravo House Wife branded Funco toys and a talk about humanity. ~Enjoy the Journey~

Tangent #61 - Foods Banned in Other Countries, But Readily Available in the USA
Today was an important day. We found out the Kinzie had a "crush" on Kevin James, that none of us are fans of padded toilet seats and that most of the food we grew up on and still sometimes eat is banned in other countries. I understand that we all have different standards and practices, but can't we find a better substitute than yellow #5? Shit, we've been talking about it's testicle shrinking side effects since the 80's. Can we not do without that specific flavor in our Mountain Dew? The list of food is heartbreaking to our younger selves and very surprising. There are a lot of "reliable" name brands and common food safety practices that listed here. How many of these items are in your kitchen? Do all dogs go to Heaven? The answer is D....all of the above.

Tangent #60 - Inventions That Improved, and Effed Up the World
We live in an interesting age where technology is being developed at a rapid pace and inventions seem to be flooding the world. But what are some of the inventions that meant the most to humanity, in a good way and a bad way. Today, we are taking a look at some of the most influential inventions and some of the most detrimental inventions we have seen so far. Maybe the best way to start this conversation off is with me finding out about a little movie called Cocaine Bear! What rock was I living under? Moving onto our subject matter, we explore chat GBT and the havoc it's reeking on college professors. Ring cams seem to be fun, but who has the rights to what your camera is recoding? The idea of the shiny new toy syndrome comes up a bit today. Sometimes we need to find all of the ways to use the toy incorrectly before we can discover the beneficial use of it. Tangent #59 - Managing Life's Regrets
Today we take a look at dive into regret. Regret is a doorway to depression, shame and the root cause for many misspelled tattoos..."No Regerts". But how does regret land with you in your emotional body. It could be said that regret is a useless emotion, but maybe we just aren't ready to hear the message of what regret is trying to tell us. We can find regret in the biggest of decisions, but also in the menial ones, like getting the fish instead of the steak at your friends wedding. And then we start "shoulding" all over ourselves. I should have done this. I can't believe I did that. It's a vicious cycle that we continuously put ourselves through and to gain what? What could have been? How do you know it's better that what you did? Well, here are 3 humans, having an open and honest conversation about regret.

Tangent #58 - The Perception of Truth
The perception of truth has been very top of mind recently. Can I have a truth that's separate than your truth, and vice versa? The short answer is yes, but is that counter intuitive to the idea of what a truth is? Well, that's what we are diving into today. That and the new understanding that actress Vira Farmiga loves heavy metal music! But with all of these perceived truths, how do we draw a line, or should we? And if you "see" a perceived truth in another, but that truth may hurt them, should you use you truth as a sword? There is a delicate balance here. But to keep things light, we talk about our favorite new hip hop albums and how people with color blindness have a truth that we'll never know. If we can begin to lean into the understanding that someone has a differing truth than our own, maybe we can find a way to respectfully disagree with people again.

Defining your personal freedom may seem counterintuitive, but too much freedom an be overwhelming. Today on ZNZBT we talk about what state of being can feel like for each of us. This is a personally defined term. My freedom may look completely different than yours. And there's beauty in that. But there's also beauty in hover boards, the movie "Blank Check" and a litany of other random topics that weave themselves into this conversation. This isn't a talk about nation freedom, or big scale freedom. This is a talk on what our personal freedom look and feels like. Tangent #55 - Famous People Who Passed Away - 2022 Edition
The passing of Naomi Judd, an artist and human being that meant a lot to Kinzie, was what spurred the topic for this episode. Today, we talk about the famous people who passed in 2022. Some of them we knew, but a lot we did not. I found it comforting to know that Coolio passed the day after my mom. So to think my mom and Coolio are on a fantastic voyage somewhere is pretty dope to me. But other things happen as well. Tangent #52 - Lesbians and Not Lesbians Episode
The lovely Kinzie Shaw is leading the conversation in this episode. Since Kinzie is our self proclaimed "house lesbian", she is filling us in on some funny lesbianisms. We at ZNZBT know it’s not the job of marginalized communities to educate us on their experience but in this episode Kinzie volunteered to educate us for one episode on some things about her experience. (She acknowledges she doesn’t speak for the lesbian community as a whole but shares some things that have been true for her.)
This is one of the more insightful and comedic conversations I've been a part of in a while. We learn about Uhaul lesbians, eyebrow slits and oat milk iced coffee. Tangent # 49 - Digital Amnesia & The Google Effect
We used to be able to rattle off phone numbers with ease, know and understand directions in a stronger way or even remember bits of obscure information. Now, we have digital platforms in our pockets that remember for us and give us the information we need. Today we are talking about 2 newer "disorders" that effect us due to the time of life that we live in and the technology that is readily used. Digital Amnesia is a psychological phenomenon that represents people's tendency to forget information that is stored in a digitally accessible manner, such as on their computer or smartphone. The Google Effect is the tendency to forget information that is readily available through search engines like Google. Tangent #47 - The Music that Made Us
Music is very impactful in our lives, whether we realize it or not. It can help us up regulate our energy for a workout or game, but also help us calm our nerves and relax. Today we are taking a look at the music that impacted us and how that impact was felt. We explore the concept that a lot of us will decide our music taste at a young age and for the most part won't deviate from that as we get older. We dive into obscure music that we listen to and that seemingly no one else would understand. DJ Screw and chanting is that for me. Music is a big part of our lives. Tangent #45 - Reefer Madness vs. Refer Madness
One was a propaganda film from 1936 designed to demonize cannabis and the other is the current reality for states with legalized cannabis. Today we are talking about the cultural shift that cannabis is in the midst of and what Betty Ford and Annies Veggie Lasagna have to do with it. Truly, they have nothing inherently in common, but if you give me long enough, I can string enough commonalities together to make it work. We take a look at positive situations like Colorado, one of the first states to legalize cannabis, and how they made so much money in cannabis taxes in their first year that they voted to give the extra money to schools and repairing roadways. But we also look at some of the pitfalls the industry has come up against. Mainly that since cannabis is not federally legal, credit card companies won't back them, forcing these shops to accept cash only and making them targets for robberies. But this is normal with anything new. We are part of the cumbersome process of un-demonizing nature and rewriting the story of what we accepts as medicines. Challenge accepted. ~Enjoy the Journey~ IG - @adamriehlhealing FB - facebook.com/adamriehlhealing FB - facebook.com/robin.grether.1 IG - @itzyourweirdaunt
Tangent #44 - Better Sleep & Healthy Habits
Getting a "proper" amount of sleep had never seemed as important as it did once I hit my 40's. Sleeping intoxicated, going to bed at 3am and waking up at 7am or sometimes staying up all night were common practices. Once we start to make positive changes in our lives, it's hard to imagine how we survived for so long with such toxic habits. So today we are talking about what adequate sleep is for us, as well as what other healthy habits we had to change or initiate to help us be the most functional humans we can be. So whether you grew up smashing Little Debbie snacks like they were the last morsels of food on the planet, or you knew it was time to go to bed when you heard the M.A.S.H. theme song come on, we all probably had to, or have to, do a little bit of reparenting on our end.

Tangent #43 - Books
Do you prefer physical books or e-books? What book would you rather have on display in your house, the Bible or The Never Ending Story? To be honest, up until about 10 years ago, I wouldn't have been able to answer those questions. Maybe it's my older years that have given me the patience to want to read, but either way, I'm now an avid bibliophile. Today, we talk about books, authors, genres, books vs movies and for the most part, we stay on topic. Go figure.

Tangent #42 - Jobby Jobs
Jobs can be fun, boring, mundane, etc, but also necessary. Kinda like Nick Cage, but I digress. At this point in our human existence, our societies are set up to push us towards having a job and maybe wanting a career. But what kind of job suits you? Are there things you definitely look for, but also things that you would never want to do, even if you get paid for it? Today we talk about what our favorite jobs would be, maybe a blunt roller for Snoop Dog; but also what our most hated jobs would be, like the QA tester for the Tea Cup ride at Disney Land. Whatever we choose to do for work, let's hope that it brings us some kind of joy or satisfaction. But if you can't find that with the job you have, does the work you do allow you to find joy and satisfaction in your personal life? Also, who put the word "felching" in the urban dictionary? These answers and more on this weeks episode.

Tangent #41 - The Death Episode
How has death affected you? Are you afraid of death? Do you feel prepared? Death is one of the few inevitable things that is going to happen to us and the people around us. Some cultures seem to embrace death, while others seem to try to create every opportunity to skirt it. Today we are taking a comedic look at death and all of the aspects that in encompasses. What to do with your body after you pass, whether or not you would like to prolong your human experience like trans-humanism or have a Viking funeral. Are God and Santa Claus related? Is cupid similar to Slimer? These answers and more on this episode!

Tangent #40 - Slip and Slide Then and Now: What else isn't the same as you remembered it?
What does Ernest P Worrell and slip and slide have in common? Seemingly nothing, except the nostalgia that they invoke. Todays conversation is based around the idea of "things not being the same as we remembered them." But to be fair, most of my memories of "what was" are muddled by emotions and misremembered information. But with that idea in mind, what do you remember from your childhood that is different now? Is is actually difference, or is it perceived? Truthfully, I have a hard time remembering what happened an hour ago. Let's see if there is any accuracy in our reminiscing.

Tangent #39 - Country Music
Now, we aren't the biggest fans of country music, but there is a nostalgia wrapped up in it for us. Today we are exploring our emotions about country music and why we don't listen to it now. Although we don't currently listen to it, all 3 of us seem to have a slight affinity to country music from the 90's; Reba, George Strait, Garth Brooks etc. The challenge to our listeners is, if you have current country music that you think we would resonate with, please send it our way.

Tangent #38 - The crazy situations we got ourselves into
As Robin's brother once said, and now I love to quote, "life is the longest thing you'll ever do." And with that idea comes a lot of opportunities to get into and out of trouble. Today we are talking about some of the crazier situations that we got ourselves into and more or less out of. Now, we are not aggrandizing any of the situations we were in, or the substances we may have used. This is all in good fun.

Tangent #37 - Apocalypse scenarios and how we would handle them
What would you do if things in the world went sideways? I mean, even more sideways than the last 2 years have been. In what wave of the zombie apocalypse would you be taken out in? Well, that would depend on whether they were leg draggin' zombies or the crazy sprinting zombies. Would you welcome an alien invasion? Or what if a meteor was going to crash into earth? I think we decided we would be part of the first wave club. How would you fare?

Tangent #36 - Talking Sh!t - The perceived benefits and ultimate hazards
Talking shit has become a pretty significant part of our society. From politicians slandering each other to win an election, to the military "breaking you down" to build you back up, seemingly every sporting event and even in familial dynamics, shit talking seems to have engrained itself into a somewhat normal way of communicating. There are even genera's of music, like battle rap, that are completely dedicated to talking shit. But as accepted as it's become, are we still aware of the danger and damage that this form of communication can cause. Today, we are diving in to our experiences and opinions of talking shit. It seems at times that shit talking is taking the place of actual affection and intimacy. Sure a smile and middle finger shown to your friend as you pass them in the hall can be somewhat funny and still get the point across of showing some affection. But is there so much discomfort in sharing your actual feelings that you need to pass them off as harsh, hoping that the other person gets the actual intent behind them? This is a big bag to unpack.

Tangent #35 - What do you do with your Free Time?
Your free time is yours to enjoy. Golfing, yoga, porn conventions, eating gummy Lifesavers, peanut butter and Vegemite. Clearly we find interesting things to do with our free time. What do you do with yours? Whatever you choose to do with your free time, the important message here is to actually have free time and to embrace it when you do. A lot of us have created so much busyness in our lives that we forget what free time is. If you've lost it, have you realized it yet? How are you going to get it back? Well, listening to this comedy laden podcast might be a good start.

Tangent #34 - Universal Signs
Universal Signs, Deja Vu, Synchronicity, God Wink, Law of Attraction or Luck. There are a lot of ways to look at todays topic. But it seems that no matter what your beliefs are, we all tend to experience some form of this. Today, we are talking about our experiences with it and if, or why, we tie it back to a belief system.

Tangent #33 - You're Not a Burden
Today we are tackling a subject that I feel a lot of us deal with, whether we realize it or not. Today we talk about why we sometimes won't ask for help because we don't want to seem like we are being a burden. This is pretty deep. I think what a lot of this boils down to is that we don't want to ask for help. We all have our reasons when it comes to this, but when we can find the vulnerability to ask for help, we can release the feeling of being a burden and just be humans.

Tangent #32 - Conspiracies
Ever let your mind wonder towards conspiracy theories? I think we all have a conspiracy theory or 2 that we believe in, or maybe we just don't know enough about it to disprove it. Today, we found an article from Popular Mechanics talking about some of the more widely known conspiracy theories out there. Although some of these may seem outlandish, I appreciate the thought process that goes into them. It really shows how much humans love a good story.

Tangent #31 - Movies, Music & Tangents
A warm welcome back to the lovely Kinzie Shaw. Today, in our Bro-Time edition we are talking about the movies and music that got us through the year. From new releases to nostalgic throwbacks, main steam smashes to cult classics, we're talking about it all. Apparently, I am the only on who hasn't seen Titanic and that seems to be a trigger for Robin. But you know us, the addition of Kinzie only adds to our ability to tangent through the realms of idiocy. And tangent we will.

Tangent #30 - What holidays mean to us
Today we are talking about what holidays mean to us. I personally struggle with the materialistic nature of holidays, but also understand the familial traditions and love that is shared around these times as well. Whether your holidays are "picture perfect" or mired with political arguments and religious disagreements, the holidays hold a special place in our hearts....or do they??
