How is an indigenous-led school unique? Ft. Ramdas Bhaskaran

Throughout our week-long Instagram live discussions, we have spoken to multiple experts about the damaging effects of factory schooling on India’s indigenous children. In this conversation, we speak with Ramdas who is a part of an indigenous run school - Vidyodaya in Gudalur, Tamil Nadu. For three decades, the organization Adivasi Munnetra Sangham has managed the school. It is not a standalone school, but an outcome of the Adivasi land rights movement. The school not only has Adivasi children but also trustees of the trust are from the Adivasi community. The students learn the history of the movement, they learn about their surroundings, the curriculum is decided by members of their own Adivasi communities. This is one of the few examples of indigenous-led education, showing that it promotes and preserves Adivasi identity while also learning about the world.

How do factory schools wipe out Adivasi identity? Ft. Nicolas Barla Pt.1

The identity and belief systems are taught to Adivasi children by their family members and community. But when these children go to schools, they are made to believe that their belief systems and religions are “non-civilized“. This is a recording of the third and final Instagram live held on 17th May. Having traveled to Canada and met with survivors of assimilationist schooling system, Nicolas Barla shares how the Indian education system must be more sensitive towards the Adivasi communities, otherwise there is a fear of losing the identity and culture of India’s indigenous communities.
These Instagram lives were conducted in collaboration with survival international and with support from Sharanya Nayak. please share them with your friends, and let us know how you found the series of discussions. Would you like us to talk more about factory schools in India? And their impact on indigenous children?
