SPOTLIGHT
Crohn’s & Colitis UK has been the leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis sufferers for over 40 years, the charity has grown into various different areas of the charity sector during this time. Not only are they key to providing information to those affected by the conditions, they also have a helpline service which provides emotional support as well as benefit guidance for those in need. Other areas of their work includes being invested in many campaigns and research projects to improve the lives of those living with the conditions.
They are currently facing unprecedented challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Their community needs them more than ever to help them navigate their way through the maze of information about what coronavirus might mean for them, especially if they are taking immunosuppressant drugs. Their website has received over 2million visitors looking for information and Helpline enquiries have quadrupled in the last three weeks. Helping people with the right information and supporting them through a very scary time is their focus over the next few months. We know their information and support helps individuals and they know this takes some of the pressure off hard-pressed NHS staff.
Marcus was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at Great Ormond Street in 1982, aged 11. He was seriously ill and his symptoms had been misdiagnosed as anxiety after he started at secondary school. Marcus was apprehensive about telling people he had the disease, particularly when he was a teenager and started working, because of the embarrassing symptoms. But he has always been ambitious and didn't want people to treat him differently as he wanted to be successful and lead a normal life. In fact, Marcus has always considered having Crohn's as a super power that has driven him to achieve his goals.
Now he is older, with three resections behind him, he has three beautiful children, an amazing wife and interests in several successful businesses, Marcus wants to inspire young people suffering from Crohn's disease and let them know that even with these conditions they can succeed and achieve their dreams in life.
In this episode, we are pleased to spotlight the Crohn’s & Colitis charity as this episode is centred around diet and includes a discussion on autoimmune conditions. Should you wish to donate to this incredible charity, please see the link here:
