Cole, now in middle school, meets Ms. Sarah, who offers her ear to Jakob's little brother and a book.

Cole tries to connect with his older brother who's moved out of the house to live in town and work at MCEP. While visiting Jakob he soon learns that it's actually Danny. So where's the real Jakob? In a robot out in the woods.

Cole finds his real brother trapped inside a robot and hugs him. He tells Jacob-Robot that mom 'will fix things' and they set off to find her in the city. But Jacob-Robot is cut short, not because of a fight that he won against another robot, but because of an important object that he lost after the fight.

Cole finds a running stream that wasn't so runny that last time he crossed it but which returns a soccer ball that he had just sent down it's path a moment earlier.

Returning to town, Cole finds a much older Loretta who tells him that the stream is why she -- and everything else -- is much older.

A beautiful montage shows us how Loretta's life has been a continuing series of losses -- her son, her mother-in-law, her husband. Cole has returned to a time where "Danny" is a father.

A young George is so preoccupied by his home-made short-wave radio that he doesn't see what jerks his friends are as they dare him to go to a nearby island to confirm the rumors that a monster living on it killed people.

The friends abandon George on the island who soon discovers that the frickin' scary screeching sound he heard on his radio is actually coming from the island. And that water snakes who bite you are also jerks.

George finds an encampment and soon runs into the source of the screeching noise, a strange Iron Giant slash broke Mandelorian robot thingy.

Soon rescued and back home, George receives his robot arm and hand and sees how people react differently to it -- and to him. Some are in wonder while others just wonder if he's a robot.

Karla reveals to her son that her late husband, Russ, had created this robot machine but realized that people would not accept it. So he sent it off in a boat to live by itself on the island.

George returns to the island to make amends and to leave something behind.

Gaddis (Ato Essandoh) is the lonely security guard for the MCEP, unable to find romantic love in from anyone in Mercer, including a red-headed man new to the town who expressed interest in him. Instead, Gaddis pines over the man from the photograph he found in a discarded tractor which he's been restoring. With the help of May, he fires up the tractor just long enough to unknowingly transport himself to an alternature universe in which the MCEP was decommissioned, and he (also Ato Essandoh) has found love with Alex (Jon Kortajarena), the man in the photograph. After calming down enough to accept an offer to live in the nearby guest house, the Gaddis' begin to recognize their matching interests in old blues records and birdwatching and become friends. All the while, our original Gaddis inquires how his alternate self found Alex, and how Alex finds his alternate self, sparking a mutual romantic interest that develops into an intimate relationship between himself and his partner's doppleganger. Once Gaddis has enough of being kept secret, he logs his wishes for Alex in his journal and dramatically presents it to him in the hopes they'll run away together. The following morning Gaddis 2 confronts him, explains that Alex has a pattern of sleeping with other men for short whiles, and despite feeling betrayed, still wishes for his new friend to stay. Gaddis rejects the offer and walks to the nearest diner where he meets the alterate self of the red-headed stranger, discovers he is also a birdwatcher, and finally makes a connection.

With their son, Danny, in a coma, Ed and Kate fight to protect their daughter, Beth. Unfortunately, they also fight with each other as Ed increasingly feels like he can no longer protect -- or fix -- his family.

When Ed hears his co-worker, Lucas, talk about being burgled -- while he was home -- Ed buys a scrap yard robot with the intent of patrolling around his yard. This causes the neighbors to fear for their safety and prompts the police to make a visit.

Danny (as Jakob) comes to the house at night to talk to Beth. She knows it's her brother. He leaves a toy of hers in the garage that she sneaks out of the house to get. Her rummaging causes Ed, who fell asleep standing guard, to bring the robot and almost kill his daughter.

With his life an unfixable mess, Ed realizes that if he truly wants to save his family he needs to first fix himself.

Cole catches fire flies in a jar but doesn't realize that without adding holes to the lid that they'll die. Grandpa Russ, the man in charge of The Loop, soon learns that his life will be coming to an end.

At the "Echo Sphere" Cole learns that by listening to the echo's of his own voice he can learn how long he has left in life. He asks grandpa to yell into it but nothing comes back.

Is Cole able to figure out how to save his grandpa? To figure out how to "add holes" to the lid of grandpa's life?

Cole assumes that he can use Grandpa's work -- The Eclipse -- to save him but his mom, Loretta, tells him that that's just not possible. (This is opposite of what Grandpa Russ told Cole that, "My job is to prove impossible things are possible.)

Grandpa dies and Cole returns to the "Echo Sphere" where we get to see his future life flash before us. Fire flies fill the inside of the sphere.

Not happy with dating Jakob May soon stumbles upon a thermos-looking device with a curious on-off switch that will soon take her, and a new love interest, Ethan, into their own world where they can stop time for everyone else but themselves.

With an eternity of time the two explore their new world -- and each other -- seemingly turning their time together into an eternity together, all in the same day.

Ethan eventually feels "stuck" and wants out while May, having felt abandoned most of her life by her disinterested mother, doesn't want to be alone. Feeling frustrated, Ethan removes the bracelet protecting him from the stoppage of time.

Jakob (Daniel Zolghadri) is a quiet artist and bright student who lacks the confidence of his best friend Danny (Tyler Barnhardt), who in turn lacks Jakob's potential. The two friends happen upon a mysterious spherical pod in the woods, and upon Jakob climbing inside, the two discover they have switched bodies. Deciding to live as one another for a day, Jakob gets a glimpse into Danny's life, the struggle he has with his parents in regards to his future, and what it's like to make out with a girl. He also notices Danny, posing as Jakob, reaching out to the crush that he never could and decides he wants to switch back. Danny confesses he would rather keep his new life as Jakob, prompting a fight between the two, which then prompts a defeated Jakob to return to the pod alone. Danny can't help notice Jakob's absense,so he sets out to the woods to find him and discovers his own lifeless body inside the pod. Now, stuck as Jakob, Danny makes futile efforts to comfort his family and a successful choice to appease Jakob's, but ultimately misses his friend, who may still be other there somewhere.

We are introduced to the show by Russ Willard (Jonathan Pryce), the founder of the Mercer Center for Experimental Physics, nicknamed by the local Ohio residents as "The Loop." He explains The Loop exists to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe, and that everyone is connected by it, so we begin one of many stories with the local residents.
Loretta (Abby Ryder Fortson), a bright young girl, comes home from school to hear her mother, Alma, has stolen a piece of The Eclipse, the power source of the Loop, to conduct an experiment. That next day, after recieving outstanding marks on a math test, Loretta heads to the MCEP to surprise her mother with the good news, but does not find her. In her search for Alma, she discovers an unusual rock that she can float in the air, befriends a boy named Cole (Duncan Joiner), meets his family, but finds no trace of Alma. She only finds her math test tucked in a box of trinkets owned by Cole's mother, also named Loretta (Rebecca Hall). The older Loretta later makes this realization and seeks out her younger self to explain the phenomenon she had misremembered as a dream and come to terms with the unexplained disappearance of her mother. She brings young Loretta into The Loop to return the lost fragment of The Eclipse, thus returning her younger self to her time and reminding her present self to reconcile with her own child.
