Breaking the Mold: A chat with Todd Bray of Broken Chair Brewery
Welcome to Season 3 Episode 1 of The Alternative Blacks Podcast! Today, we're cracking open a cold beer from Broken Chair Brewery, and we're joined by the owner, Todd Bray.
Broken Chair Brewery, like many small businesses, started in a garage. Todd and his team were tired of beers that were extreme in taste and hoppiness, so they set out to create a wide variety of beers that everyone could enjoy. It took a lot of trial and error, but they eventually succeeded in brewing beers that they were proud of.
A few years into the brewing process, Todd and his team decided to take their operation to the next level. They searched for months to find the perfect location and ultimately settled on West Reading. The community around Penn Avenue is very supportive of small businesses and Todd and his team were excited to be a part of it.
The tasting room is cozy and welcoming, with a warm brick and patchwork tile floor. The brewery is visible through a glass-paneled door and features a small 2 BBL brewing system with 8 fermenters. This small brewing system allows them to make a variety of different beers, and rotate them when one has kicked.
Join us as we chat with Todd about his journey in starting Broken Chair Brewery, and what it takes to run a small business in today's world. Cheers!

On this week’s bonus episode of the Alternative Blacks Podcast, Chris and Tyler discuss the nuances of what it means to be racist and how that differs from prejudice in today’s reality. Chris and Tyler agree Black people in America do not have access to the established power capable of swaying the institution of racism. Ultimately, we question how racism is perpetuated through the power structure, and further, what does it mean to be racist?
