Decode your 20s

Decode your 20s

By Andrei Margeloiu

I'm 21. I ask myself lots of questions as my eyes open to start seeing the world.

As I answer these questions, I talk about them so that other teens in their 20s can listen to my ideas in order to create their own opinions about the world.

I talk about life/society/ideas as seen in this transition.

Management vs Leadership: practicalities for you as an individual

Management vs Leadership: practicalities for you as an individual

Leadership is about setting up a vision, a direction, something which is high-level and serves as a map. Management is about the execution of the tasks involved with making a vision reality, paving the road drawn on the leader’s map. I discuss how we can think as the leaders & managers of our life.

Stop looking for the quick fix, humans cannot skip stages

Stop looking for the quick fix, humans cannot skip stages

Humans are part of nature, and a natural process cannot have its stages skipped. Think about crop yield; if you don’t plant the seed in spring, then you will not get the return in autumn. Because humans are a natural process we cannot skip stages; we can't get good results through quick fixes; instead, we need to look deep, and I mean deep inside our character; we need to build our inner characteristics like gratitude, empathy, self under-understanding. The real core humour values which will give us long-term success.

What to do when you don’t know what to do?

What to do when you don’t know what to do?

With freedom comes great responsibility. People are bad at managing their own time when there are no outside constraints. I have the same issue now that I am doing my thesis. I want to start doing the work during the day and leaving time for exploration (reading other things) in the evening.

You are insecure, thus you feel the urge to belong to a group

You are insecure, thus you feel the urge to belong to a group

People are inherently insecure, people have a void into them, and they are searching to fill this gap of insecurities with entertainment, alcohol and other things. Now, have you ever thought about why people want to belong to ideologies/groups (nation, city, football team, school club)? Bcausr people want to feel more significant than they are because this gives them security. Belonging to a group provide you with protection this is what people want: security.

Your imagination doesn’t map to reality

Your imagination doesn’t map to reality

Our imagination gives us a fake understanding of the world and has almost nothing to do with reality. In areas where we lack experiences we tend to extrapolate far away from reality. Today I received a PhD offer, and I felt like I didn’t know enough for this PhD offer, but I forgot to remember about all those years where I wrked extremely hard to get here, those nights when I didn’t sleep to finish coursework and those sacrifices of 65 hours work weeks.

Not chasing an audience allows me to speak about what I truly care about

Not chasing an audience allows me to speak about what I truly care about

I don’t aim to have a large audience for this podcast. I couldn’t care less if zero or 1000 people are listening to this podcast because the main theme of this podcast is having the chance of clarifying my thoughts. I am aware if I would have an audience, it would make me change what I’m speaking to fit to the audience interests. So by not having the desire of having an audience it allows me to have the luxury of freedom to speak about anything which is interesting to me.

From now on, I am posting unedited audios of me thinking loud

I noticed that I have many thoughts which are not clear into my head but if I am just thinking about them inside my head I have a lot of noise and this doesn’t help me get to a clear conclusion that I want to restart it podcast and post all my thoughts as I am thinking about them so I want this podcast to contain rough, non-edited audios, were it’s just me speaking loud. I believe this will help others to see that they are not alone in the oursuit of gaining clarity. I believe this podcast will help me get mental clarity and I can’t wait to look at it in one year.

How waking up early changes your game? 005

I have been trying to find a solution so I can finish the work before late evening. Apparently, the solution was so obvious and still not visible to me ... waking up super early.

This changes everything.

00:55 - What happens when you wake up LATE?

05:43 - What happens when you wake up EARLY?

How to take fast decisions? 013

How to take fast decisions? 013

The best way I found to take fast decisions is to admit that 99% of the things don't actually matter. Hence, the single condition is to make a decision fast and go with it.

The thing that I am still struggling to comprehend is that you will never know the alternative. Hence, it does not matter what you choose at the end of the day.

Developing pattern recognition for the tech revolutions. 010

Did you notice how many technological revolutions happened while you were alive? Web, mobile, SaaS, Offline Services Digitalization and Geek economy, Blockchain, AI etc.
-
I think that the important thing to do it to get used to embracing new innovations, because we can't stop them.
-
It is incredible to see that they have many similarities. Hence pattern recognition skills start emerging that will help you take advantage of the new revolutions.
-
In this video, I share what patterns I see in those revolutions.

You are living in the greatest era of mankind. 009

You are living in the greatest era of mankind. 009

I am amazed how we all take things for granted. Let's remember that the smartphone is 11 years old. Google Maps is 13 years. Uber is 10 years. Whatsapp is 9 years. The whole internet is around 25 years old...

And yet, it seems that they were here since forever :)

Let's get perspective and imagine how the world was 25 years from now. Super slow. Hence, let's be happy that we are living in the greatest era of mankind and start taking advantage of it.

Why technical people underestimate non-technical people and vice versa? 008

Why technical people underestimate non-technical people and vice versa? 008

It's clear to me that everyone wants to feel that what they are doing is special and close to unique.
-
This is not necessarily bad, but it's something that you need to be aware because it can be a misleading feeling.
-
The main causes I observe for underestimating other professions are:
1) Your EGO
2) Some jobs really have a lower barrier to entry which attracts non-skilled people
3) The unknown of what other's actually do

Think of this, because it's very dangerous to believe that what you do is so special.

How to prepare for your Computer Science exams? 007

How to prepare for your Computer Science exams? 007

To learn for exams it's is pretty simple algorithms. The professors don't expect you to invent new things or solve something that they didn't teach you.
-
Hence, you need to prepare for what they taught you.
-
1. Create a timeline with the exams and how much time you will dedicate to each of them
2. Read the course once and make annotations.
3. Look at the past papers to see what they expect you to know and solve.
4. Reread the course and write down what is important.
5. Solve the problem sheets, to practice and see the solutions.
6 Solve all past exam papers.
-
Now you are good to go! There is no trick, shortcut or magic tip.

Don't worry about the incremental, worry about the exponential. 006

Don't worry about the incremental, worry about the exponential. 006

This is a theme that I was thinking for a long time: putting things in perspective and doing what it really matters.
-
This being said I started to think that we have a limited amount of energy that we can devote to taking a decision. Hence, that energy should be put into things that can grow exponentially and not incrementally. The analogy I use in the video is: "don't worry about saving money through discount, but worry about making more money". Both will make you richer, but the latter doesn't have an upper limit.
-
Question for you: "When did you do an exponential move? And how did it play out?

What do you need to focus on in high school? 004

What do you need to focus on in high school? 004

This is a super interesting question for those in high school: What do you need to focus on in high school?

I'm not studying Computer Science and finally realised the framework that worked for me and probably will work for you too.

You need split your time outside the school into three parts:

1) Foundation: This part should take 30% of your time. You need to learn and understand everything that they teach you in school. This means to get very good grades.

2) Learn your craft: This should take 50% of your time and is the most important. Become great at a subject of your choice.

3) Understand the world: This should take 20% of your time. Its scope is to widen your horizon and perception of the world.

When to buy an insurance? 003

When to buy an insurance? 003

There are two types of things:
1. Things that if they are destryed will affect your life. Say your house, car or health. If something happens with this will have a big impact in your life. You will have to consume a big amount of time and resources to recover them. So, I would say to better buy such an insurance.

2. Things which won't affect you if they break. Say headphones, tablets computers. If anything happens with this you can repair them and continue your life. On the long run, you will save more money by repairing these things than buying an insurance for each of them.

When do you buy insurance for you stuff?

Why you should buy less stuff? | 002

Why you should buy less stuff? | 002

Buying less stuff will give you more time for what you like doing, such as learning, thinking, reading or playing football.

If you think that buying things is what you like, maybe you should think of the following: "Buying stuff is a mask of your own insecurities". I found this idea in the book "Freedom from our addictions" of Russell Brand and it has a lot of thoughts on it. Buying things such as fancy clothes or a nice pair of sneakers often show interior insecurities and you hope that the 'things' will defend you.

How do I buy clothes? Based on this three principles:
1. Buy as few things as possible; buy just what I truly need; this means no dog t-shirts, key rings or 10 pairs of jeans.
2. Buy things that you genuinely like; don't buy something for the sake of buying it; if I don't feel like spending the money now, better wait; it's better to buy something 2x more expensive and use it that buy something that you will never use.
3. Buy durable things;

Why do I start this podcast? 001

Why do I start this podcast? 001

I start this Q&A vlog to help the young generation of adults find answers in their transition to young adults. There are lots of questions which appear with every year passed and some of them are not easy to answer. During the years I asked myself many questions and found good answers for many. I would have loved to have someone slightly older who could explain things in a clear manner that can be understood by a student of 20 years old. The problem with some advice coming from a successful person is that they have a much bigger life experience. Hence, they can understand how the world works in more depth. I want to explain things from my perspective as a student and may be easier understood. I will talk just about what I know and I have experienced. I want to provide value in my content and I am not going to debate things or make assumptions of things from books. I want to give practical advice that I used and it made sense for me. Let's see how it goes.
