Fund Operator Podcast 1.5: The ESG investment duration gap with Sally Bridgeland

Fund Operator Podcast 1.5: The ESG investment duration gap with Sally Bridgeland

Sally Bridgeland joins FundOperator.com Reporter, Maya Sibul, to discuss the duration gap between ESG considerations and the investment cycle – and how to rectify it.

The duration gap refers to the mismatch between ESG objectives that take decades to unfold and financial markets that have much shorter life cycles.

While the issues around embedding ESG into the marketplace are multi-faceted, this topic is critical as it hits on the significance of a long-term mindset needed to achieve ESG investment goals.

Sally previously discussed this fundamental issue at Clear Path Analysis’s autumn ESG Investment Leader event in London last year. It’s a difficulty, she has said, that the industry is likely to struggle with for some time.

Sally is a leading figure in the pensions industry – she’s the Chair of Impax Asset Management Group, as well as a Non-Executive Director and Committee Chairman at Royal London and a Non-Executive Director at Pension Insurance Corporation and at RSA. However, she is probably best known for her work with the Local Pensions Partnership as Non-Executive Director and Chair of its Investments.

To add to her list of credits, Sally will also be a judge at Clear Path Analysis’s inaugural ESG Investment Leader Awards later this year.

Fund Operator Podcast 1.4: Albacore Capital Group's Matt Courey.

Matthew Courey, Chief Operating Officer, AlbaCore Capital Group, joins FundOperator.com Reporter, Maya Sibul, to discuss carbon conscious investing – and how it could be, in his words, “the answer to all your problems.”

Courey is a Founding Partner and Chief Operating Officer at AlbaCore Capital Group, where he is responsible for the organisation’s operational strategy and infrastructure. He has over 22 years of experience in High Yield credit markets, most recently as the Head of the High Yield bond trading team at Credit Suisse, and prior to that was Executive Director in the Fixed Income Credit business at Morgan Stanley.

He is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of Seeds of Peace, an international non-profit that focuses on leadership development in conflict regions.

Courey will be speaking at Clear Path Analysis’s 2023 Private Markets Investor Europe conference – on in London on the 28th and 29th of March – giving the opening keynote on “Carbon Conscious Investing: The Solution to All of Your Problems”. In it, he will expand on the role Private Markets can play in accelerating the low-carbon transition.

In this episode, we ask Courey for his thoughts on how taking an active investment position in the transition to carbon neutrality helps mitigate risk in the short and long-term – and how it can improve operational efficiency across the board, whether it be with client service, investor reporting, data strategy, or product development. We get into the nitty gritty about boosting the sustainability and durability of a business with carbon conscious investing, and what exactly that could look like.

Dive in for more of his views.

Fund Operator 1.3: Improving ESG with Scottish Widow's Maria Nazarova-Doyle

Maria Nazarova-Doyle joins FundOperator.com reporter, Maya Sibul, to discuss ESG in the investment sector – what it looks like for 2023 and the challenges and opportunities that she's seeing.

Maria is the Head of Pension Investments and Responsible Investments, Scottish Widows. She's responsible for defining the investment offering across the pension business – covering workplace savings, and individual and longstanding customer segments – and for incorporating ESG into the investment design. She previously held senior defined contribution investment roles at Mercer and JLT.

Maria is also a spokesperson on investment matters, a regular contributor to pension industry events, and a professional awards judge. She also volunteers on the PMI Policy and Public Affairs Board, the CFA UK Pensions Expert Panel, and the Taskforce on Pension Scheme Voting Implementation. And she’s one of just a handful of women in these senior positions focused on sustainability in the UK finance sector.

Maria spoke last year at Clear Path Analysis's ESG investment leader’s conference on the topic of “What value can companies gain from ESG and impact investing?” and we thought her answers were so great that we asked to hear more one-on-one!

In this episode, we're covering the ESG landscape for the investment sector, particularly those macro themes around ESG's growth and development – as well as the market's response. We ask Maria if we are seeing quick enough change to the industry, how can we compel those laggards, what positives are we seeing, how do we fix the persistent issues, and what developments are we excited about in the future?

Dive in for more of Maria's views.
