#59 Legacy of Saheb Kanshi Ram by Sagar
#59 Legacy of Saheb Kanshi Ram by Sagar
Sagar is a writer and journalist currently working with The Caravan. In this episode he discuss in detail about the ideas, legacy and pragmatism of Saheb Kanshi Ram. Kanshi Ram is one of the biggest name in the Dalit movement in India’s political landscape. He launched the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984, which went on to form the government in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh on four occasions. To call Manyavar Kanshi Ram, only a politician would be very much of an understatement. He was a disruptor who dislocated the Indian political landscape and gave power to one of the most oppressed people in this country.  Sagar discusses not only about the times when Bahujan politics was at its peak but also these bleak times when the entire foundation on which Kanshiram laid his ideas are on shaky grounds. What has worked, what has changed, and what can we learn from the past to understand our present better, we discuss it all in this episode.  This podcast doesn’t have corporate funding or support, so listeners' contribution is crucial for its survival. #57 with Prof. Brahma Prakash on Cultural Appropriation
Here, we talk about the meaning of labour in art and who controls the power to define the ‘pure’ culture. The reasons for marginalization of folk performances in India. How the idea of taste in art is shaped by the role of caste and class. Prof. Brahma Prakash is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He is the author of the book Cultural Labour (OUP, 2019). His research interest lies in regional cultural performance traditions from northern India with a special focus on the question of aesthetics, marginality and cultural justice. Topics discussed in this episode: 1 What is the meaning of the often misunderstood term Aesthetics? 2. What is the meaning of 'taste' that defines good and bad art? How does the position of caste and class in this concept of 'taste? 3. What is the meaning of cultural labour? 4. Has the form traditionally belonged to Dalits and was considered 'low art', but then Upper Caste appropriated it and made it 'high art'? 5. How folk art is used as a device to play a transformative and revolutionary role in society. 6. Connections between art, leisure and creative boredom. Can working-class people who don't have the luxury of free time produce high-quality artwork? 7. What is the cultural capital of art in an age when socio-political realities have changed? In the times of social media, people from marginalised communities have used social media platforms such as TikTok and insta reels to express themselves and find a vast audience. 8. Sumit is the Founding Editor of The Shudra Media and The News Beak. In the past Sumit has held various positions with ABP News, Zee News, India News and News Nation.  It’s a well known fact that there is close to nil representation of Dalits in Indian Media. In the recent by The Media Rumble in partnership with Oxfam India, it was revealed that out of 121 leadership positions surveyed in newsrooms, none are held by those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Three out of every four anchors of flagship debates are upper caste. Not one is Dalit, Adivasi, or OBC. Only 10 of the 972 articles featured on the cover pages of the 12 magazines are about issues related to caste. No more than 5 percent of all articles in English newspapers are written by Dalits and Adivasis. (Source: Newslaundry) In this podcast we talked about. 1. Sumit’s experience of working with India media and the ways in which he has seen the casteism that operates in these Upper Caste Castles. 2. The reason behind low representation of Dalits and Bahujan voices. 3. Why even the Upper Caste media personalities who claim to be progressive have failed in creating diversity in their organisation. 4. Is the new digital media bringing new hope in the area of social justice. 5. The flawed concept of TRP. 6. Advice for upcoming Journalists. Support my work: 1.
