52 Weeks of Why - Dr Candice McDonald (NASA Employee, Empowering Women, SuccessupLife.com)
My guest this week on #52WeeksofWhy is Dr. Candice McDonald.
Her story is one of overcoming naysayers: her 8th Grade guidance counselor told her she would never graduate & she was told she 'didn't have an office' since she didn't have her doctorate. She also overcame outright rejection: Kent State denied her Doctorate Application. She now works for NASA (take that naysayers!) and does everything she can to empower other women and kids so that they too can succeed through naysayers and rejection. Her husband's positive COVID test was her most recent challenge and we finish our discussion talking about this.
Thank you Candice for sharing your story, your WHY, and for everything you do to make the world a better place for our children (especially my daughters!) and our community. Check out her Website (SuccessUpLife) and join her in supporting healthcare workers and empowering women & children.

#52WeeksofWhy begins with Ben Ratner, owner of Lib's Market in Salem, OH! Ben is an entrepreneur, father, husband, musician, and community activist. His WHY had an interesting twist to it.

Don’t make decisions out of rebellion.

Don’t demand the fruit before the seed has been planted.

Your Life Project
Lawrence Becker (a modern Stoic Philosopher) takes this a step further stating that we should look at the roles in our life “all things considered,” meaning not just by focusing on one at a time, but while keeping in mind the broader project of our lives.
I’ll give you an example. I am a father, a husband, and also a Coach, and a Board Member, and a friend, and a brother, and a son. In other words, like everyone else, I wear many different hats in my life. I play different roles.
The tendency is to focus with a microscope on each role individually….as separate from each other. It comes naturally. But it is a mistake! By focusing only on the role we are playing in the moment, we lose sight of the proper balance across all the roles. Don’t misunderstand, I have expectations for my own behavior in each individual role (towards my children, my wife, my clients, my fellow board members, my friends, and family, etc). But these roles are bound to intersect and at times conflict with one another. When they do, then what?
Massimo Pigliucci (a modern Stoic Philosopher) says, “We need to keep in mind our ‘life project’ as a whole, treating every problem and approaching every relationship, all things considered, with the objective of finding the most harmonious dynamic equilibrium possible, given the circumstances and our resources of time, effort, and so forth.”
Today take a few minutes to reflect on the various roles you play in life and think of what it would mean to have every individual one working so harmoniously together that they create a ‘whole you.’ Your life project.

Know when to say no.
Saying “No” doesn’t come naturally and requires effort. The context of my thoughts are not about necessarily about saying no to people (when asked to do something), but rather learning when not to do certain things:
· when not to read an email
· when not to read a text
· when not to answer the phone
· when not to reply to an email
· when not to reply to a text
· when not to speak or answer a question
Not doing these things requires knowing yourself well enough to know:
· when you’re not in your BEST mental place
· when your anxiety is teetering on the ‘edge of the stress ledge’ and one minor thing could push you over
· when your heart isn’t ready to handle a situation
· when you can’t treat the person you’re interacting with the way they deserve
It takes practice….learning when not to do things…..learning how to say “No” in these situations. You have to pay attention to your mental, physical, and emotional queues. You have to know how much fuel you have left in your emotional tank.
If you don’t have enough emotional fuel, don’t read that email or text that will drain the tank and leave you on empty for the rest of your day. Glance at it, but cut the supply of fuel immediately. Go back to it only when you know you’re ready. When other, more important tasks, have been successfully completed and you know that you can address the email or text with a clean slate.
Pay close attention and realize when it may not be the best time to talk to the person you Love, the ones you value most over everyone else. Say, “I’m sorry I can’t discuss this right now.” Be real. Give them the mental and emotional respect they deserve. They will appreciate that you are not giving them ‘partial attention.’ They will appreciate that the responses you give will not be reactionary or emotional. They will know when the time comes that you do talk…that you are giving them 100% of your best self.
Do your best to be mentally, physically, and emotionally responsible with every single written word and action. Give your best with your ears, your eyes, your touch, and your words. Don’t do it, read it, listen to it, or watch it until you can give it as much of your heart and mind as it deserves without draining your tank.
