Applied Science

By Yogi Reben

with Yogi Reben (@yogireben)

Understanding science (and other nerdy stuff) can be difficult. Yogi tries to make sense of current topics in science and adjacent topics.

We try to make it down-to-earth and not stuffy (like science often is). Sorry (not really) if we curse.

112 - Life… with Mike Garcia from "The Rook"

112 - Life… with Mike Garcia from "The Rook"

You might think that by “Life”, I mean, like, “Biogenesis.” But no. Mike Garcia is the singer of a hot new band out of Long Island called “The Rook”. Check them out! @therookband … He is also a huge nerd and a lawyer and an accountant and a mythology aficionado, but we somehow managed not to get to any of that in our 90 minutes. We catch up about being dads, the PR-NY connection, and honestly we reminisce alot about the music scene on Long Island from ‘93-‘03. Opening songs “Why Can’t We Have More” and “Haunt This Town” by The Rook. Check them out!

111 - PTSD with Shantée Ayala (from @ScienceFailureSoul)

Shantée Ayala Rosario is a PhD student at UCLA studying Neuroscience. She documents her journey - and the journey of others - on a variety of social media accounts and websites, because a tour of the campus from someone who’s getting paid by the school only scratches the surface of what the process is actually like. Check out her stuff @sciencefailuresoul on Instagram, Youtube, and elsewhere! Intro song: “The Periodic Table” by Cut Chemist

You can see his photos of these animals on Instagram @thebackyardzoologist. Intro Song: “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division.

We talk about other animals’ buttholes, too, and even some other parts of animals. And Squigglevision. And some other stuff. Dig it! The intro music is: “She Blinded me with Science” by 8 Bit Universe, a Tribute to Thomas Dolby. Check them out at Bandcamp, iTunes, etc!

105 - Games and Learning with Josh Garfinkel

105 - Games and Learning with Josh Garfinkel

Josh has been a good friend for nearly 3 decades. He teaches Writing and Literature in Denver (but he's a NYer). We talk about a variety of topics, but focus on Games (and Gaming) and the human mind (including how we learn, why we like the things we do, mental health, etc).   Some background: I've given Josh (and others) crap about D&D for many years, and here we really get into an analysis of why some people like it and others don't. Also get into video games, having kids, etc. Life, bro.  Josh is what I would call a “Bibliophile” or “Literati”, and he uses a lot of big words; I commend him on his patience when talking to a math/science guy like me.   Lastly: Yeah, this is a really long episode. I thought about splitting it into two, but decided to leave it as one. I do suggest you take it in pieces of a size that work for you.   Intro song - “Knowledge” by Operation Ivy

104 - Perseverance (Mars Rover) Landing with Capt John (Sportscast)

Perseverance, originally known as Mars 2020, is a 1-ton rover which landed on Mars today, 18 Feb 2021. Remember Capt John from episode 102? He's back, and we call the play-by-play as if this were sports. Because we love sports. Uh, yeah. We swear we do. #edutainment

Captain John Gentile is the Captain of a sailboat named “Avalon” based in Vieques, Puerto Rico. We discuss ‘Oumuamua (the first known interstellar object to pass through our solar system), sailing, the 80’s and 90’s, and several other topics we veer off on. Intro song: “Rio”, by Duran Duran

101 - Planet X with Anthony from Loss Becomes

Anthony Copozzi is the singer of the NY-based band Loss Becomes. We try to figure out why science headlines have been talking about "Planet X" - a gigantic planet past Pluto (and that some conspiracy theorists throughout the years have said some pretty crazy stuff about). Also: wrestling, comics, and life in the time of pandemic. Intro song: “Mathematics” by Mos Def
