Episode 121: Hot Girl Summer Then & Now

Episode 121: Hot Girl Summer Then & Now

It is officially summer! And we could not be more excited!! We thought it would be fun to share our favorite summer memories from when we were kids, since summer marked the end of the school year & summer vacation was actually a thing -- remember those days?

For anyone who hasn't heard of the term “Hot Girl Summer” just yet, Coach Meg aka Megan thee Stallion said it best -- “Hot girl summer is about just being you, just having fun. It’s turning up, driving the boat, and not giving a damn about what nobody’s saying.” Welp, we don't have a boat, but we're ready to not give a damn and turn UP this summer! Even if it means turning up under the covers with a nice, cozy nap :). What are you excited for this summer??

Episode 115: A Letter to Our Parents

Episode 115: A Letter to Our Parents

Why is verbalizing or expressing love to our parents so hard? Growing up, many of us did not use words of affirmation as a love language with our parents. It could be mostly due to our contrasting generational Asian upbringing or the difference in language. Regardless, there are so many unspoken words of love and gratitude that we haven’t shared with them.

As kids, we saw our parents as the people who’d nag us, drive us to our practices, automatically pack our lunch boxes for us, etc. However, as we get older, we start to see them as more than just our moms or dads. We start to see them as humans and understand the struggle that they came from to truly provide the best for us, their children.

Today, we take the time to read letters that we each wrote to express our appreciation, love, and unspoken words to our moms and dads.

Also, Happy (belated) Mother's Day to all the mom and mom figures out there!

Episode 111: A Conversation with Janet’s Ex, feat. Wesley Chan (from Wong Fu Productions)

Romantic relationships are one of the most challenging types of relationships to navigate. And while some connections hold strong and end in a beautiful lifetime together, many fizzle out. In episode 85, we each wrote a letter to our exes. It was the first time we got that open and vulnerable with one of our past relationships on this podcast! And so many of you enjoyed hearing our letters, especially the idea that opening old wounds and memories can actually be a healing process, if approached with gratitude in mind.

In this episode, Janet takes it one step further and has a conversation with an ex. His name is Wesley Chan (we call him Wes), and their relationship was a meaningful one, though short-lived. He is also one of the co-founders of WongFu Productions, and a good friend of ours.

This will also be the first time they reflect back on their college relationship together, the first time, in 17 years!  That’s all we’ll say for now -- but we hope you enjoy this chat between two good friends, once lovers.

Episode 108: Women Who Inspire Us & What It's Like to be an Asian Woman in Today's World

Episode 108: Women Who Inspire Us & What It's Like to be an Asian Woman in Today's World

March is Women's History Month, and in light of the tragic hate crime that occurred in Atlanta on March 16, 2021 - the killing of 7 women, 6 of whom were of Asian descent - there is even more reason for us to uplift, discuss, and celebrate what it means to be a woman in today's world.

Join us as we recognize and talk about women who inspire us, who move us, and serve as motivation for us - women we think are beautiful (however we define beauty), women who challenge us, and women who make us feel proud to identify as women. We also talk about our personal experiences with our womanhood - what being a woman today means to each of us, personally.

And to our ABGs and ABBs who are coping with what it means to be an Asian woman in today's world - We’re here with you, we see you, and we love you all.

Who are women that inspire you?

Episode 107: Mixing Tech, Love, and Astrology with Rachel Lo, Founder of Struck

In previous episodes, we have analyzed our astrological signs, as well as learned the art and science of matchmaking. Today, we’re going to take both subjects one step further and talk about astrology-based matchmaking.

Does such a thing exist? According to Rachel Lo, the CEO and Co-Founder of Struck - an astrology-based dating app prioritizing intentional conversations and emotional intelligence - the answer is, yes.

Rachel is a former Apple product design engineer turned matchmaker, who, despite her STEM background, turned to astrology in her mid-twenties to help make sense of the world around her. Tune in as we hear Rachel’s journey leaving her “science playground” at Apple to the struggles/wins of starting her own app!

Episode 106: Cysts, Ice Queen, Tall Bros -- Get to Know Our Siblings!

Friend, Daughter, Podcast host -- are all titles that the three of us have in common. Today, we want to explore another title we share... Sister!

The three of us are fortunate to have grown up with either a younger sibling or an older sibling. From causing havoc in the house together, someone to be our parent’s guinea pig, to having someone to get you out of trouble...there is no one else in the world that has seen us or gone through things alongside us like our brother & sisters.

As we start to get older, it’s setting in how cool and fortunate we are to have our “forever friends” in our life. Today, we’ll be sharing all the fun & annoying love of our relationships with our one and only, siblings. Thanks Anne, Brandon, and Patti for joining us today!

Episode 105: Let's Talk About BOOBS

Episode 105: Let's Talk About BOOBS

Today we are going to be talking about...Boobs. Breasts, tits, hoohahs, boobies - whatever you want to call them, they are a noteworthy part of the human body, and hold particular anatomical and symbolic meaning.

Different people will conjure up different associations and ideals when it comes to the topic of boobs. Today, we want to discuss it from the perspective of 3 cis-gendered Asian American women. We’re going to talk about our personal experiences: what our boobs mean to us, recalling our relationship with them through those awkward teenage years, reflecting on social perceptions (for example the idea that Asian women have particularly small boobs), bra and personality associations, and more.

If you enjoyed this episode, tell us about your first training bra in the comments!

Episode 104: #StopAsianHate with Tammy Cho & Michelle Hanabusa, Co-founders of Hate is A Virus

Episode 104: #StopAsianHate with Tammy Cho & Michelle Hanabusa, Co-founders of Hate is A Virus

In the last month, the U.S. has seen a massive spike in anti-Asian hate crimes. According to The Cut, there were 20 incidents in the first half of 2020 alone, compared to 1 in the entire year of 2019. These activities have prompted intense sadness, frustration, anger, and fear amidst the Asian and Asian American community.

Today, we have Tammy Cho & Michelle Hanabusa, co-founders of Hate Is A Virus, a community of mobilizers and amplifiers that exists to dismantle racism and hate. Tammy & Michelle started Hate Is A Virus in April 2020 in response to the rise in hate crimes against Asian American Pacific Islanders due to the pandemic.

Join in today as we process the recent events, learn more about the initiatives at Hate Is A Virus, and discuss ways to take action to #StopAsianHate.

Episode 103: Get to Know Jenny Han! Author of the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" Series

Episode 103: Get to Know Jenny Han! Author of the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" Series

On today's episode, we pick the brain of the mastermind behind the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" trilogy, Jenny Han! She is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and also the executive producer on all three of the Netflix films - "To All the Boys I've Loved Before", "To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You", and the final film, "To All the Boys: Always and Forever" (out now!)

When her first film came out on Netflix, we all watched the movie and relished in the sweet nostalgia of young love, re-living the butterflies from first crushes, feeling the blush in our cheeks from awkward “firsts”, and wiping away hot tears that stain a naive heart. Lara Jean & Peter Kavinsky have clearly captured the hearts of America, and today, we think Jenny Han will capture yours. If you've watched the final film, let us know what you think!

Episode 102: Bling Empire's Kevin Talks Dating, His Asian American Identity, and What it's Like to be on a Reality TV Show

Join us as we chat with our friend and Bling Empire star, Kevin Kreider. As residents of LA working on projects promoting Asian American representation, we met Kevin years ago through our friends at Wongfu Productions, whose shorts Kevin has acted in. And Kevin actually hosted a gala where ABG received our first cultural impact award from APEX in 2019.

In this episode, we talk about both the Kevin in Bling Empire and the Kevin BEFORE Bling Empire - the Kevin who worked as a model and fitness coach while running his own production company called Taejin Entertainment LLC. The Kevin who has been an advocate of redefining Asian masculinity for many years and has been a motivational speaker at places like TedX and Google about reclaiming Asian male sexuality in America.

Episode 100: OUR 100th EPISODE!!

Episode 100: OUR 100th EPISODE!!

We made it!! Triple digits!!! 100 is the beginning of a new chapter that we are opening as we enter the uncharted, the unknown, and the incredibly promising year of 2021. From that late-night casual conversation over drinks 4 years ago that lead to mic purchases, googling “how to make a podcast”, and claiming the @asianbossgirl handle across multiple platforms -- to a multi-media LLC powering the #3 podcast in the Personal Journals category in Canada and the #7 in the U.S. on Apple Podcasts and the #17 podcast in the Business category in the U.S. on Spotify -- 100 episodes later -- some things have definitely changed, but many things have remained the same.

In this episode, we cover questions such as -- What were we most afraid of and excited for when we started the podcast? What has been the most challenging part of building this podcast? What is the most valuable lesson we have learned? What's ahead for ABG? Join us as we reflect on our journey to 100!

And thank you all SOOO much for being part of our journey. We honestly could not have gotten here without y'all. We hope to continue growing & learning with you, & building up this community to become something even more special and interconnected. Thank you, and here's to the next 100.

Episode 99: How Are Parents Coping With Today's Social & Political Climate? Feat. Asian American Parents

Episode 99: How Are Parents Coping With Today's Social & Political Climate? Feat. Asian American Parents

We are a couple of weeks into 2021, the year following an U.S. election year unlike any other many of us in our lifetime have, and perhaps ever will, experience. And though we are hot off the inauguration last night where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were formally sworn into office, marking the start of a new presidency, the intensity and aftermath of the social and political landscape from 2020 continues to affect us all.

Like many people, we have been feeling overwhelmed, and sometimes numb, by all that has happened, and continues to happen, in our world today. To help us understand, ground, and interpret the current world state from a different perspective than our own, we are going to speak with people we think have one of the hardest jobs when it comes to coping with today’s current events - parents.

Thank you to Kelly Lang, Michael Banaag, and Divya Anand for sharing their stories and perspectives with us!

And thank you to Divya for the resources below:

Episode 93: Asian Parents On Celebrating American Holidays

Now that we are fully in the holiday season and your Christmas decorations that went up in early November finally make sense to the rest of the neighborhood, we wanted to bring up a topic that we’ve experienced our whole lives. Celebrating Western Holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, as Asians!

Whether our families serve duck instead of turkey during Thanksgiving or have a good ole spicy hot pot going,  these are all traditions that we’ve experienced as 2nd generation Asian Americans, toeing the line between our Eastern and Western cultures, and facing the generational differences within our families, at the dinner table.

Our parents join us for this episode & share how they learned about these Western holidays for the first time! Did your parents go through similar things? Take a listen to the ep & let us know!

Episode 92: Mel Goes on a Blind Holi-DATE w/ an Actor! feat Hayden Szeto

Trying out dog food for the first time on a first date? Guess nothing should surprise us any longer in 2020, hm?

Now that the holidays are in full swing, we're bringing you another fun and juicyy holi-date episode! Helen put on her cupid wings again, and this time, she's setting up Mel with an actor, and someone who is equally passionate about the API community, the arts, and *shocker* also doesn't like hiking??? His name is Hayden Szeto,
@haydenszeto. You might recognize him from The Edge of Seventeen! Can compatibility prevail for these two? No pressure, but we're definitely crossing our fingers ;)

Grab a drink, relax, and get ready to be a fly on the laptop screens of this Zoom holi-date! And after this episode, head over to our YouTube channel, where you'll be able to see snippets of this conversation. I mean, we needed to put a visual on the dog food, right? Episode 91: Parking Lots, Leftovers, and Jade Bracelets - The People, Places, & Things That Shape Us

Episode 91: Parking Lots, Leftovers, and Jade Bracelets - The People, Places, & Things That Shape Us

People, Places, and things - in the most simple and direct translation, they are simply the definition of a noun. But these nouns are what makeup experiences, the many experiences throughout our lives that have shaped us into who we are today. From the people who left a lasting impression on us, the places that are painted with memories, to the inanimate objects that feel more living than not...all of these experiences have left a lasting impression on us for different reasons.

In the Disney movie, “Inside Out”, they touch on the topic of “core memories”. Core Memories play a pivotal role in the film and are described as memories that feel more significant than regular memories. Core Memories essentially shape your personality and define who you are today.

Today, we’ll be sharing our core memories, specifically the people, places, and things that have made an impact on our lives.

Episode 88: Gratitude Takes Effort - Here's How We Do It

Episode 88: Gratitude Takes Effort - Here's How We Do It

One can argue that gratitude is the most powerful of human emotions. There have been studies that show that the benefits of practicing gratitude include: improved physical health, better sleep, greater happiness, more self-esteem, stronger relationships, greater resilience, less anxiety, reduced symptoms of depression, and so much more. Practicing gratitude not only helps you to feel more grounded and peaceful, but it also improves your ability to share that love with others. To give back. To say thank you. And to re-commit to your inner values.

However, gratitude doesn’t come easy for most of us. The fact is, we’re built for survival, not happiness, and therefore, gratitude takes effort. Join us as we practice a gratitude exercise together, and share ways we implement it in each of our lives.

Leave a comment below about something you are grateful for :)

Episode 87: The Haunting of Your Corporate Horror Stories

Episode 87: The Haunting of Your Corporate Horror Stories

Happy early Halloween everyone!! In episode 79, we shared with you all some of our spooky horror stories from our time working in corporate.

Not a lot of us like to air out our dirty laundry when it comes to our jobs, out of fear of looking like a disgruntled worker, or even the possibility of getting fired. But we asked you on IG if you were open to sharing, and to our surprise, our DMs were FLOODED with your messages. From physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive bosses to countless stories of mismanagement, these are pretty heartbreaking to read. It seems there isn’t enough done to combat these toxic work environments.

At the end of the day, we’re all in this together. And the more we share, the more we know that we’re not alone in these experiences. So on theme with this weekend’s Halloween celebrations, we decided to share some of YOUR work-related horror stories!

Episode 86: Birds, Whales, Fails, and All the Scary Tales -- Our Greatest Fears!!

Episode 86: Birds, Whales, Fails, and All the Scary Tales -- Our Greatest Fears!!

This month, we are focusing on the topic of Self Exploration, and as we near the end of October and edge closer to the spooktacular day of Hallow’s Eve, otherwise known as Halloween, we thought it would be appropriate to dedicate an episode to OUR GREATEST FEARS!!

Fear is one of the seven universal emotions experienced by everyone around the world. Fear arises with the threat of harm, either physical, emotional, or psychological, real, or imagined. While traditionally considered a “negative” emotion, fear actually serves an important role in keeping us safe as it mobilizes us to cope with potential danger.

Today, we discuss everything from surface-level phobias like clowns, whales, birds, holes??? to deeply significant life fears, like lack of direction, failure, public speaking, and all.

What would you add to this list? Let us know in the comments below!

Episode 85: A Letter To My Ex

Episode 85: A Letter To My Ex

Breakups...ugh they suck! Sometimes it's a clean break. But more often than not, the period that follows can be messy and often left with words unsaid. As time passes and more life and love insight are gained, we may have even more we'd like to say to our former partner. The 3 of us have thought back into our dating history and each selected one ex. We then each took the time to write a letter to this ex, and we’re going to spend this episode sharing and discussing those letters with each other and all of you! Have you tried this exercise?

If so, leave a 📝 and share your experience with us in the comments below!

Episode 84: 4th Generation- Between Two Worlds with Sierra Katow & Taylor Chan

Episode 84: 4th Generation- Between Two Worlds with Sierra Katow & Taylor Chan

The Asian American identity & the stories that exist within our community are vast & extremely nuanced. The three of us have explored our own identities through various episodes (Episode 25: ABM-AsianBossMoms, Episode 63: APAHM - Growing Up in An Asian Household, Episode 64: My Asian Am Identity) with the lens of us specifically being 2nd gen Asian Americans. If you listened to those episodes, you heard us talk about our parents’ immigration stories and how we balance the culturally traditional side (that our parents pass down to us) with our western side (the environment we were raised in).

Today, we want to explore another identity within the Asian American experience...the stories and perspectives of people who are 4th generation. And to help us explore this topic, we have brought on 2 very special & familiar faces (and voices)…Comedian/Writer, Sierra Katow, and Director/Writer, Taylor Chan! Tune in to hear them share their stories about the feeling of growing up “in-between” two worlds.

Episode 83: Attachment Theory and Me

Episode 83: Attachment Theory and Me

Happy October everyone! This month, we are focused on the topic of self-exploration. And today, we will be talking about the fascinating theory of attachment styles. This theory has studied how parents/caregivers have played a significant role in the attachment styles of their children. As children interact with these caregivers as a secure base to explore from and return to, the response from these caregivers leads to the development of patterns of attachment for the child, i.e. are the parent’s responses loving, caring, angry? These interactions then guide the child’s thoughts, feelings, and expectations in later relationships in life, romantic or otherwise.

In the late 1980s, psychologists noticed that interactions between adults are similar to those between children and caregivers. For example, adults feel comforted when those they are attached to are present, or they become anxious or lonely when they are absent. They observed that romantic relationships serve as a secure base that helps people to face the surprises, opportunities, and challenges that life presents.

So today, we’re getting personal and going deep by analyzing our attachment styles!! There are four main styles of attachment: 1) secure attachment, 2) anxious-preoccupied attachment, 3) dismissive-avoidant attachment, and 4) fearful-avoidant attachment. Which do you think we'll be?

On today’s episode, we have Liah Yoo, beauty influencer and founder and CEO of KraveBeauty. Liah has an international social media following of over 1 million people. She creates content that educates her followers on low-maintenance and effective skin care, sharing her unconventional acne-fighting tips based on her own personal skincare experience.

Liah worked for AmorePacific, South Korea’s largest beauty company, before starting her own brand, Krave Beauty, whose mission is to challenge the fast-paced beauty industry to slow down. Episode 81: Finding the Right Career

Episode 81: Finding the Right Career

This month, we are focused on the topic of careers and entrepreneurship. To find a career that is the right fit, it’s important to not only understand WHAT we want but WHO we are - what are we good at? Understanding our personal strengths, weaknesses, and work values is not a one-time exercise. It requires a lot of patience, dedication, and active energy to understand ourselves, and also account for all the ways in which we change over the span of our working years.

To prepare for this episode, we each took a number of evaluation tests that measure our skills, personality preferences, and work values. We’ll talk about everything from our inductive reasoning skills to structural visualization skills to dominance vs. influence and end with a fun Buzzfeed quiz to evaluate what career we should each be in.

Take the quizzes & follow along in our conversation as we dissect our results!

Quizzes we took:

Aptitude Test

DISC Test

What Career Should You Have?

Episode 79: Our Corporate Horror Stories

Episode 79: Our Corporate Horror Stories

Although the three of us now work on AsianBossGirl full time, we all have had experience working in corporate. From that obnoxious coworker who loved hearing the sound of his own voice, to horrible bosses that lacked a single empathetic bone in his/her body, to comments from coworkers about race and an unnerving correlation with some aspect of your work. As kids, we would make up scary stories to tell our friends, but now as adults, we STILL have scary stories to tell – only this time, they’re 100% real, and 100% scary, if not more. In line with this month’s theme of entrepreneurship and careers, we take a walk down memory lane and recount some of the horrific instances we experienced while working our past jobs.

Episode 78: Finding Hope

Episode 78: Finding Hope

2020 is proving to be a challenge. On a larger scale, the world is facing a global pandemic that is trickling down and unveiling an ugly side to our country. All of these things happening in the world, whether we want to admit or not, affect all of us on an individual level. Through our conversations with each other & with our loved ones, we realize there also exists a feeling of guilt. Guilt that tells us that we don’t “deserve” to feel sad or down because “someone else is going through something worse”.

But now is not the time to ignore the voice in your head that separates your soul from your ego. With all the time we’re spending at home, battling safety and our own sanity, it has become increasingly important to learn to listen to ourselves -- all parts of ourselves – the bright AND the dreary. Because only then- can we learn to bring light into a world that otherwise feels dim.

Today, we’re discussing how we’re finding positivity & hope during the time.

Please let us know how you're finding hope in our comments below!

Episode 77: A Woman’s Right to Vote

Episode 77: A Woman’s Right to Vote

This year's August 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which guaranteed and protected women’s constitutional right to vote. As Asian American women, however, this celebration was a little different for us. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, but women of color were still marginalized under this law. The fight for voting rights for women of color continued for many years after 1920, and it wasn't until the Voting Rights Act in 1965 that racial discrimination was finally prohibited in voting.

These series of events emphasize how powerful, sought after, and precious the right to vote is. Voting is the single most direct expression of how we want the social constructs of our society to be managed. Today's episode is dedicated to all the women who have fought, progressed, and won us the opportunity to exercise one of our most basic civic rights - the right to vote!

We talk about our earliest memories of the concept of voting (does anyone remember high school superlatives, homecoming court, or student government?), if voting was ever discussed within our Chinese/Taiwanese households, our first times voting, the resources we used, and what voting means to us now.
