Sports frustrations - Tellin' it like it is

Sports frustrations - Tellin' it like it is

We're having a good old expression session! What’s REALLY annoying you about #sport right now?

Andrew & AJ tell it like it is, and listeners get their sporting angst off their chest too. Points of contention include:

  • Sports 'journalists' who don't know anything about more than one sport
  • Crowd violence and the d*ckheads who start it
  • Eurosnob football fans who don't go to the A-League
  • Blowouts in the NBA playoffs
  • The AFL treating AFLW as an afterthought
  • Refs faulters and umpire blamers... What is wrong with people?

This, plus plenty more. Got some sporting angst you want to unload? This is the place to get it said. Follow A Sporting Discussion on Facebook and Twitter, join us every week on YouTube and you can even leave a voice comment at the link below. Join in and be part of the fun!

Andrew's got the 'rona but unlike all these other cowards, he’s turning up to talk #SportsOfAllSorts with AJ Mithen. Join us as we start 2022 by getting stuck into the sporting events of the summer so far:

  • Novak Djokovic gets punted from Australia to cheers and jeers - but what does it mean for the country's sporting reputation?
  • Coronavirus runs rampant in world sport
  • Why doesn't Australia help to grow world cricket?
  • Which sporting league will be first to let COVID-positive athletes play?

Erin Delahunty talks #ChangeOurGame

Andrew and AJ welcome back great friend of the show Erin Delahunty, who was recently announced as one of 15 selected to participate in the 2021-22 Change Our Game Women in Sports Broadcasting Program. Erin tells us about the program and what it means for her and for women looking for opportunities to move into sports broadcasting.
We can't have Erin on the show without getting into some netball talk either, so there's plenty of that too.
Erin Delahunty is a freelance journalist who writes all there is to know about netball for Guardian Australia. Her first book ‘Netball Heads’, alongside UK sports journalist Denise Evans, will be available through Orphans Publishing in early 2022.

Writer Martin Lenehan talks about his book 'The Ashes'

In a special episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ speak to author Martin Lenehan about his book 'The Ashes

Martin Lenehan is a sports writer and author who was formerly editor of Inside Edge magazine. He has covered the game in print and on radio for more than 25 years. He is also the author of ‘110 Years of Rugby League’ and ‘Baggy Green Legends’.

His book 'The Ashes: 140 Years of Rivalry, Rituals and Respect' is a collection of behind-the-scenes stories and hundreds of images showcasing the skill and talent of the men and women who play for their country and the history, prestige and rivalry of the clashes between Australia and the old enemy, England.

The foreword of the book is written by Ian Healy, one of Australia’s finest glovemen, and Martin spoke to a huge number of Aussie cricketing greats including Greg Chappell, Doug Walters, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazelwood, Mike Hussey and Christina Matthews.

It's a great chat about one of Australian sport's most enduring and stirring contests!

Erin tells us all about her upcoming book 'Netball Heads', co-written with British writer Denise Evans. It's an in-depth guide to the inspirational international netball players of the modern game.

We also take a look at India's phenomenal test series win over Australia in the cricket, and wonder if we're all being a bit harsh on the 'tennis brats' currently stuck in hard quarantine ahead of the Australian Open.

Talking cricket with Adam Collins

Talking cricket with Adam Collins

This week Andrew and AJ welcome back 'good friend of the show', cricket writer and broadcaster Adam Collins.

It's always a great chat with Adam - he covers more ground than Jonty Rhodes and is as forensic as a spell from Anil Kumble.

He talks about his experience getting home and quarantining in Australia, working out of hubs in the English summer and how COVID-19 affected the cricket world.

We also get stuck right into the Australia v India test series, rejoice in the Indian pace attack and weigh up the pros and cons about whether Australia should give Will Pucovski his test debut in Sydney.

You can also do yourself some good and listen to Adam's latest podcast 'The Greatest Season That Was: The Final Frontier'.

In this special 'year in review' episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ work their way through the UNPRECEDENTED sporting scenes from 2020. Which athletes stood out? What were the best moments? Who made the best decisions under fire?

Freakin' about breakin'

Breakdancing is in the Olympics and boy oh boy aren't the traditionalists up in arms about it! In this episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ celebrate the 'urban/youth' route the Paris 2024 committee has taken.

What does it mean for a sport to be included in the Olympics? In the case of baseball, it's a massive blow for some countries. We talk about that and much more including the Big Bash League's funky, funky rule changes to keep distracted children focused on the fireworks, concussions to young gun batsmen and much more.

Talking A-League with Michael Lynch

Talking A-League with Michael Lynch

The A-League cops a bad wrap from some corners of the Australian sports community and recent poor pay-tv ratings were used to give it another whack. Are things really that bad though?

We need someone who knows what they're on about to set us right, so in this episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ talk with The Age's Chief Soccer Reporter Michael Lynch about where the A-League sits in the Aussie sporting scene, how it got to this point and what if anything can turn things around.

It's a most interesting chat with someone who has probably forgotten more about football than most of us know!

Hub life!

Everyone's in hubs! Aussie sport is in hubs, the NBA is in a hub, even your favourite sporting podcast is coming to you from a hub!

In this episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ talk about the sporting hub life and its impact on competitions, including whether the AFL really needs to play 33 games in 20 days and the impact of COVID-19 on smaller Aussie sporting leagues.

What does it mean for sport in Australia? And if you were in a hub, would you call the snitch line to rat someone out?

Too much sporting positivity

Too much sporting positivity

How fragile is sport's house of cards?

In this episode of A Sporting Discussion, Andrew and AJ wonder how many positive COVID-19 tests it will take to shut down sport.

With Novak Djokovic's positive test rocking the sport world, what other dominoes might be the ones to fall? Is international sport even possible at the moment?

There's also a celebration of Rob Moody's 'Robelinda2' cricket highlights twitter account winning yet another victory over the suits.

Andrew and AJ talk about the 'forgotten champions' of #sport. Not those who pulled off a 'one-off out of the box' performance, not 'underrated role players' or 'great teammates'...

We mean genuine, five-star champions who don't get the respect or profile they deserve.

We got flooded with nominations from listeners this week who suggested some genuine superstars of sport who have for one reason or another dropped from the public consciousness. Thanks to everyone who sent in their suggestions!
