Workplace diversity is an extremely important, but often overlooked, topic. How do we change our culture and encourage people from underrepresented groups to become a part of this well respected field? Join our panelists as we discuss our lived experiences as black men in an industry where the dominant culture isn't one that looks like us. This will be an honest, open and transparent conversation that will benefit everyone. This dialogue must happen before we dive into implementation strategies so we can achieve a more just, equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment.
Mastering Workflows with Omar Colom
I had the pleasure of chatting with Jeff in High Def and his team the other day. Let me tell you, these guys are on top of their game. From discussing the latest ideas in technology to sharing their insights on some pretty complex industry topics, it was clear that this duo was passionate about what they do. What struck me most was how down-to-earth and open to share the knowledge - despite being experts in their field. They weren't afraid to engage in a little lighthearted banter or share a laugh, which made our conversation feel like catching up with old friends rather than a stuffy business call. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about my experience speaking with Jef & John, and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for knowledgeable and personable professionals to work alongside.

Social Media Presence
Social Media Presence
NEGATIVE WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA CAN AFFECT YOUR JOB SEARCH
TOO MUCH OF A GLIMPSE INTO YOUR PERSONAL LIFE:
Even if you don’t have anything “bad” on your social profiles, they can give employers too much of a glimpse into your personal life, and sometimes it can give them a negative or unfavorable impression about you.
YOU COULD BE CAUGHT STRETCHING THE TRUTH:
People lie on their resumes and during a job interview. About 88% of recruiters and HR staff have found some form of misrepresentation on a candidate’s resume. Social media gives companies a chance to perform a pseudo fact check and look for inconsistencies.
GIVES A COMPANY A REASON NOT TO HIRE YOU:
Companies use social media as a way to screen employees. With so many applications, they are looking for ways to thin out the candidate pool. Please don’t give them a reason to eliminate you from contention. Keep your profiles clean and professional.

A resume is a written compilation of your education, work experience, credentials, and accomplishments. Most professional positions require applicants to submit a resume and cover letter as part of the application process.
In many cases, your resume is the first document a hiring manager will look at when reviewing your application, and therefore is an accurate “first impression.” Accordingly, it’s essential to put time and effort into developing and maintaining an updated, proper resume. Think of a resume as “self-advertisement” that sums up your experience on one page.

Virtual Show Calling: The New Norm?
Virtual Show Calling: The New Norm?
Show calling for events has always been very similar in nature to theater, with an accelerated timeline. Show calling for virtual events is a familiar but different beast in that there is so much more pre production that needs to be talked about and fleshed out ahead of time.
We normally need more rehearsal time, more speaker time, more time to internally rehearse and try to break things so that we can fix them before the client ever knew we did anything weird.
We have to explain what we do and why it’s important over and over again, because no this isn’t just Zoom and you can’t just do what you want.
More importantly, we can’t rely on sound, ambiance, lights, etc to drive out storyline anymore so WHAT is driving it?!
Enter broadcast.
Enter graphics.
Enter music, but used in very different ways because of how the human ear interprets and prioritizes sounds.
Where theater etiquette was once king, we have had to adapt to its equally complex cousin of broadcast calling. This has meant a shift not only in how we call, but also how we present show flows to the clients. Reaction shots are not something readily received by event planners who want us to stay only on the person talking. Reaction shots may not always be expected when your speakers decide they didn’t want to wear pants and get up to walk around RIGHT as you take their feed (definitely keeps us on our toes though).
Graphics- let them drive your story!
Create intros. Create breaks.
Create little bugs that you can program- functional (coming up next), trivia (facts/questions), or just for a fun game (little popcorn guy that pops up randomly throughout the show)
As the show caller, these instances are less random and more planned because if you don’t know then you don’t have them created and programmed and ready.
Me personally, I will include it in my show flow as a reminder to me so I don’t forget between all the other cues to call these little bugs up.
With these, you can also include some SFX. With swipes, with bugs, or on their own!
Applause is always a good one to have ready,

The True Cost of Business
The True Cost of Business
THE FB POST THAT START'S THE CONVERSATION WEDNESDAY NOV/25/2020 with Trevor Michael of Digerati Productions come join us and learn how to Freelance yourself on a business level and price yourself accordingly for your market and your knowledge.
A customer asked me how much it cost to make a table....
I answered him: $ 1500
He said: So expensive for this job?
I asked: How much do you think it would cost you?
He answers me: $ 800 maximum...
That's a pretty simple job right? !"
- For $ 800 I invite you to do it yourself.
- But.... I don't know how to.
- For $800 I'll teach you how to.
So besides saving you $700, you'll get the knowledge for the next time you want It seemed right to him and he agreed.
- But to get started: you need tools: A table saw, a planer, a top, dormants, etc...
- But I don't have all these equipment and I can't buy all of these for one job.
- Well then for another $250 more I'll rent my stuff to you so you can do it.
- Okay, he says.
- Okay! Tuesday I'm waiting for you to start doing this work
- But I can't on Tuesday I only have time today.
- I'm sorry, but I'm only available Tuesday to teach you and lend you my stuff. Other days are busy with other customers.
- Okay! That means I'm going to have to sacrifice my Tuesday, give up my tasks.
- I forgot. To do your job yourself, you also have to pay for the nonproductive factors.
- That is? What is this?"
- Bureaucratic, tax, vat, security, insurance, fuel etc.
- Oh no!... But to accomplish these tasks, I'm going to spend more money and waste a lot of time!
- Do you have them? You can do it to me before?"
- Okay!
- I'll make you all the material you need. Truck loading is done Monday evening or Tuesday morning you'll have to come by 6 loading the truck. Don't forget to be on time to avoid traffic jams
- At 6??? Nope! Too early for me! I used to getting up later.
...
- You know, I've been thinking. Y ' all better get the job done. I'd rather pay you the $1500. If I had to, it wouldn't be perfect and it would cost me a lot more.
When you pay for a job, especially handcrafted, you pay not only for the material used, but also:
- Knowledge
- Experience
- Study
- Tools
- Services
- Time to go
- punctuality
- Accountability
- Professionalism
- Accuracy
- Guaranteed
- Patents
- Sacrifices
- Safety and security
- Payment of tax obligations
No one can denigrate other people's work by judging prices.
Only by knowing all the elements necessary for the production of a certain work can you estimate the actual cost. I did not write this dialogue, but am sharing it to support craftsmen and entrepreneurs.

How to get Repeat Business as an AV Tech
"You're Pretty Good at This for a Girl"
I would like to start by stating the ideas discussed do not reflect all men in the theater industry. While I reflect on unfortunate instances that have occurred, I want to make it very clear that these were only a few individuals I have had experiences with. Furthermore, misogyny in the workplace can take form between any genders, not just from men towards women.
As a female carpenter in a predominately male environment, I have witnessed my fair share of misogyny. From comments on my strength, technique, all the way down to my physical characteristics, I have been a target for male co-workers to criticize.
Comments I have either heard towards myself or fellow female co-workers have included: “Look at that little girl in the grid’, ‘I thought we’d be working with men’, ‘Do you know how to use this drill?’ ‘Don’t work too hard, let the men do it,” and lastly, “You’re pretty good at that, for a girl.” I’d like to share these experiences in hopes to bring attention to how important equal treatment in the workplace is for the theater community.
